That's so cool Mike! Me and my step brother did the same thing for this game except we.focused a lot on pitfalls and forest routes to get back to certain buildings along with a couple of frequencies to get certain items.
I find myself surprised not only at how sophisticated this game is for an nes game, but just how FAITHFUL the Solid series was to its origins. Truly, we stand on the shoulders of giants. The boundless ingenuity of early game developers is something to both admire and respect!

These videos help so much and have helped me complete so many more games than I ever thought i could beat, you have no idea how much I appreciate your putting these videos out and enjoy listening to your walk throughs as well! You are the best UCBVG!
I almost asked if you did a metal gear then realized i could check all your videos out. This game was my nemesis as a kid, tough one to beat. The nostalgia. Great video
The one time I tried playing Metal Gear, this happened: I ran through screens until I saw a sleeping dog. I went up and kicked the dog. It woke up and killed me. Confused, I did the same thing. So did the dog. Me: "what kind of game has a dog that can kill you, but you can't beat it?!" I turned it off and never played it again. It wasn't until about 7 years later I learned that something called 'stealth' was in certain games.
I remember finding that glitch in the super computer room, and then playing the end of game multiple times just to see if it was repeatable. Probably the easiest boss skip in any game. As for why Big Boss sent us, and other of his troops to "stop" himself? I think the later canon was that he sent them under the authority of a country he wanted to attack with Metal Gear, so he would have some cover when he did so. Basically just using Fox Hound as pawns to give him some standing to launch a "retaliatory" attack.
1:11:45 Actually, 'they [didn't] want[...] us to fail' : Big Boss really wanted to use Venom Snake and Solid Snake, as lab rats to test his new base. While Solid Snake was busy infiltrating Venom Snake's base, the real Big Boss was building Zanzibar Land. Big Boss used Venom Snake's base as a distraction and Solid Snake's mission as a small scale simulation of a possible infiltration of Zanzibar Land. That way, he could fortify Zanzibar Land more efficiently. And the 'Big Boss' of Metal Gear 1 is only the Venom Snake of Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain transformed into a body double for the real Big Boss.
After 32 endless years, today (!) I finally managed to beat this game. As a kid I think I never made it to the first checkpoint. But with this video it was quiete easy and even more fun. Thank you so much, such a great channel! Uh uh, the truck have started to move =)
Thanks for the guide! Game 7 down, I repeat game 7 down over. :) I accidentally skipped the super computer but went back to fight it, then Big Boss. It's amazing how glitchy this is and I totally didn't mean to skip that fight, it's just that easy! Thanks again for your extremely excellent guides! I'm excited to see what's next!!!
I never thought to use the transceiver screen like that! I always wondered if there were secret transceiver messages and frequencies when I was a kid. Thanks for the nostalgia!
Nice video! The bit about Snake and Big Boss having a bet made me laugh :D Couple of minor corrections though 1) The iron glove is actually an essential item. You'd just never know it as the player because unlike everything else, you don't need to actually have it equipped for what you need it for. But you actually can't open the door to where the firetrooper is without it. Out of curiosity I left the glove behind once to see if it would matter at all and... yeah. turned out I needed it. lol 2) The forest mazes, you don't need to go left 5 times in the first one. 2 is enough. Left, Left, Up, Left works on both forest areas. It actually doesn't matter whether you take the top or the bottom paths to the left in the second forest maze except for that last time. And only the last time because you'll be in a dead end if you take the top path. Also just gotta say those forest areas suck because there's nothing on the game that tells you how to get through them. lol at least Zelda had someone who filled you in on how to get through the Lost Woods
When I was a child I watched my "friend" play this game and I got upset because he was killing all the dogs. He told me that all the guns in the game were actually non-lethal except for the rocket launcher, so I felt a little better but only briefly, because for the rest of the game, he shot every dog with the rocket launcher. :(
This was an excellent walkthrough and your videos always amaze me because I've played this game many times and everytime I see one of your vids I always learn something 😁. I beat this game years ago but I just did it your way. You've definitely streamlined the whole process in your playthrough. I do however like the novelty of using the scuba tank and the antidote lol.
The reason Solid Snake was sent in was because the entire Outer Heaven/Metal Gear project was a ruse. Yes, it was fully functional, but it was intended to be a decoy for the real Big Boss as he set up Zanzibar Land (seen in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake). This Big Boss was actually Venom Snake, the protagonist from MGSV. He was playing the role of Big Boss and sent Solid Snake in with the intent of deceiving him and having him report back faulty intel. The problem: Solid Snake was too good. He surpassed even Venom's and Big Boss's wildest expectations and single-handedly brought down Outer Heaven and Metal Gear. This ended up forcing the real Big Boss back onto the world stage. Yes, there are still plot holes galore in that explanation, but it was at least an attempt at making it make sense. "Plot-spackle", as Yahtzee once called it.
I always wondered what the iron glove was for, I thought it made your punches do more damage. That transceiver trick is pretty nice too, definitely would've come in handy. I Also wonder since they put Kyle Reese on the cover of the cartridge, if the "Arnolds" are supposed to Terminators.
This one makes me feel like I really suck. Had Metal Gear growing up, never played it much until the MGS on PS1 came out, got the demo, got obsessed, for like the 6 months from demo until MGS release I binged on this game. First few tries were probably 30-40 hours with countless deaths, finding all the rooms, figuring out traps and what keys for what rooms. By the end I could beat it in one sitting in like 4 hours, skipping a fair number of hostage and stuff. I thought I was the man. Apparently not. Great run.
Don't feel bad, Ogre Chad. I figured out a lot of this stuff myself, but I combined what I knew with tons of research. My notes for this game are about 30 pages long, and feel like a legit strategy guide. Once I mapped it all out, certain things just started to make sense.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames I can just imagine the time that went into it. Same with the Metroid run, that was another one where you just played it in such an entirely different manner than I ever attempted lol.
What's that, you can "pet" the dogs by pressing the punch button once?! That is hilarious... played this through several times on my NES as a kid, such a classic.
I loved this game when it came out. Now, after 35 years of Metal Gear fandom, I have grown to appreciate how little they changed this classic Metal Gear formula. Every game from solid 1-4 pretty much had this formula and I always dig it.
A common thing in many games are OSP:On-Site-Procurement. You come in with nothing and take what the enemy has in order to not leave a trail to your superiors.
I’m suprised you don’t have more views dude. I love watching this nerd shit. There’s guys doing it half as good that are getting way more views. Keep at it, you got some good content here.
Oh and at the end of MGSV you learn that you weren't playing big boss, but one of those helicopter guys, and you see hear that cassette he says I am you and you are me, then as the camera pans, you see the logo go from diamond dogs, to outer heaven, the you see a glimpse of the tape and it says "operation intrude N" , I forget if it says more, but for a game that was supposed to end after the second one, the mastermind himself Hideo Kojima, somehow found a way to weave the entire story together, the man himself says he is 70% movies, but he is God for sure.
I am playing msx version and I came as far as card 6 and it is so interesting to see how both versions are so different than each other yet same at the same time.
Dang, this was one of my all-time 'how the heck do you beat it?' games. Never had it myself but rented it a couple of times back in the day. I think I managed to get as far as the desert without a compass and died there and gave up / ran out of time. There's a lot going on in this for an old NES game. It really is a classic. Never knew about petting the doggos.
I got to the dog LOL. I never had this game back in the day and only played it a couple years ago. I couldn't figure out what to do and was frustrated not to have any weapons and was also bored.
Been hanging out on outer heaven on twitch for years from being a super metal gear fan. They beat metal gear solid 3 almost entirely with the fork lol. Enjoyed watching your play through my friend, always entertaining!
Awesome I managed to get all the way to the point you had to go back to the rescue the daughter but couldn't figure out how to get back to the hostage building. Back when I played the game on my own at 14 the internet didn't exist.
If you don't want your Metal Gear destroyed, don't send people on missions to destroy your Metal Gear. This is my favorite thing I've heard all week. hahaha
Two things: In the Big Boss fight, you can just go to the upper right corner while he's on the right wall and walk down a bit. Bog Boss will get soft locked into a spin in the bottom right corner. He can't even shoot. When I was a kid I accidentally discovered the super computer skip and never even knew about the building with Dr. Pettrovich. You can skip rescuing him and the daughter with the super computer skip.
Base wars was such a good game. It was so fun to get thrown out on base and just decimate my friends with the laser sword or machine gun. I would usually win by totally destroying too many of the other player's robots.
My cousin played this at my house when we was kids. She put a code in and started out with everything. What's crazy is it was the first time she ever played it and just guessed the code.
Another humor point that I wish you brought up was that what happens to all the hostages that get rescued? If they have no weapons how do they actually escape and leave the compound? After 20 or so hostages surely the bad guys would have noticed that people are missing lol...anyway great video as always!
Gray Fox: "Dr. Pettrovich is the only one that knows how to stop Metal Gear!" Dr. Pettrovich: "Right, so listen carefully, what you gotta do is blow it up until it explodes."
I always assumed a Rambo 2 situation, he got hung up on his pack so he had to cut it lose and lost all his weapons. Just has a pack of smokes in his pocket.
I remember as an 8 year old in 1988 I watched a group of my friends who were 10 years old or so, play through this game. I was younger so I was viewed as an inferior player. I of course told them tips and such as I just watched. We couldn't figure out the super computer though. If I remember correctly there was no damage sound when the plastic explosives hit the computer. They left the game at my house one night and I put in the password for the final area just to try. When I got to the computer I freaked out when the soldiers rushed me and I quickly exited to the right. Thats when I saw i was in the room with Big Boss. I beat him and immediately called and told them I beat the game! All of my friends were dumb founded how I figured it out. I showed them and really didn't know it was a glitch at the time. We thought that's just how you did it! Great video as always!
Cant believe i beat this when i was 8 or 9. I remember it being hard as hell and at one point giving up because i lost a star rank by accidentally killing a hostage when trying to release him which meant i had to start over. After that i put it down and didnt play it for awhile until the desire returned.
Again thanks for the memories loved playing this game. This game did have silly premise like you stated several times, but it was way ahead of it's time.
17:22 "Is that what this FOXHOUNDER team does?" Literally, it is. It isn't explained until MGS1 but they do specialize in on-site procurement, which supposedly makes it more difficult for the enemy to detect you because you're leaving no traces of your presence. Though in practical terms, it's kind of stupid.
lol pet the dogs? This is funny your punching the dogs not petting them! It's great though how the dog doesn't want to beat up any other dogs and I when I got through this game, had gone the hard way through the deserts and the pit fall rooms, just because I had no idea there was alternative ways to go.
Very nicely done. I've only recently come across your channel, I'm enjoying your works, and I'm telling my friends about this channel. Several of us are Metal Gear fans, please please do snake's revenge and metal gear 2: solid snake.
Awesome work man ! 👍 I've been pleasantly 'stuck' on your Channel for the last few days, happily with no end in sight 😎 Sadly, all I own of my original NES copy of the game, is the box 😞 Although I do have a framed Aliens poster with Micheal Biehn's autograph - I should have had him sign the MG box !
As long as you've taken the time to get some ammo for it before being captured, using the grenade launcher against the Shotgunner is also an option. A bit tricky, but fun!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames One day i just tried to put in the last row differently of my own old save password and it worked 🙂 it was useful because for some reason i just got confused around The buildings and couldn't collect all the items, also i i couldn't finish the game because of Jennifer's brother got killed, and this i found out in your video 🙂 so thanks 😁 still i had a blast playing this game

Mind blowing to see how many tricks I missed on my playthrough. So many shortcuts too. Grets work
I think some of those shortcuts were put in by the devs to make testing the game easier. I'm not sure they expected people to ever figure them out
1:11:45 Actually, 'they [didn't] want[...] us to fail' : Big Boss really wanted to use Venom Snake and Solid Snake, as lab rats to test his new base. I never heard of Metal Gear or any of the pre MGS games until after I played MGS. Guess I wasn't as avid a gamer as I thought I was when I was 6/7.
It originated on the Japanese MSX systems in 1987 so a lot of people hadn't heard of it in the west.
This was my addiction. MG Was amazing.
no doubt!
Snake's bet with Big Boss cracked me up. If you haven't/don't already, you should live stream!
Been hanging out on outer heaven on twitch for years from being a super metal gear fan. They beat metal gear solid 3 almost entirely with the fork lol. Enjoyed watching your play through my friend, always entertaining!
It's super cool to me that all the themes in later Metal Gear games is here
Awesome I managed to get all the way to the point you had to go back to the rescue the daughter but couldn't figure out how to get back to the hostage building. Back when I played the game on my own at 14 the internet didn't exist.
Yeah, I don't know if I'd have ever found her back in the day. Couldn't get too far on this one as a kid.
If you don't want your Metal Gear destroyed, don't send people on missions to destroy your Metal Gear. This is my favorite thing I've heard all week. hahaha
It is finally nice to see these games that were impossible for me as a kid so easily beaten.
I remember trying the msx version on ps2 or 3, good times. I like that this one doesn't have a hard final boss
So happy I came across your channel, I love it! Brings back so many memories!
"Pet the puppy".
Man, where was this line in Feb 1989 when I got this game as a kid?
Two things:
In the Big Boss fight, you can just go to the upper right corner while he's on the right wall and walk down a bit. Bog Boss will get soft locked into a spin in the bottom right corner. He can't even shoot.
When I was a kid I accidentally discovered the super computer skip and never even knew about the building with Dr. Pettrovich. You can skip rescuing him and the daughter with the super computer skip.
This game was so confusing as a kid. Great video
Great stuff! Brings back so many memories from endless hours of figuring stuff out! Keep up the good work!! 😀
Thanks, Andreas!
Gray Fox: "Dr. Pettrovich is the only one that knows how to stop Metal Gear!"
Dr. Pettrovich: "Right, so listen carefully, what you gotta do is blow it up until it explodes."
I still want to know what happened to the other parachute jumpers...
I always assumed a Rambo 2 situation, he got hung up on his pack so he had to cut it lose and lost all his weapons. Just has a pack of smokes in his pocket.
Loving the relaxed Bob Ross style, don't change it...
Never heard about that trick to skip the super computer, thanks!
Found your channel the other day. Love it. Keep up the awesome work.
I remember I had to restart the whole game once because I didn’t have plastic explosives to blow up the computer, I was so mad
Oh, that would be so frustrating!!
At least you could skip the super computer if you didn't rescue the Dr. and his daughter.
@@vliegpaul 😂 that’s epic, but did you choose the right ladder?
Loved this metal gear always wanted to see a remake of this game! Got this game and a shit load more for Christmas along with my first nes!
a good game from my childhood, ah really thank you very much. I still play it, sometimes thanks to an application or an emulator
Even threw in a "nicee" on the 69th rank.
Quality content
Cant believe i beat this when i was 8 or 9. I remember it being hard as hell and at one point giving up because i lost a star rank by accidentally killing a hostage when trying to release him which meant i had to start over. After that i put it down and didnt play it for awhile until the desire returned.
Finally got to see the finale. I've made it to end game twice. The 1st time, i didn't get the daughter first, 2nd I died to big boss.
One of my all time favs...just an awesome game.......loooove metal gear solid on ps 1 also!
Again thanks for the memories loved playing this game. This game did have silly premise like you stated several times, but it was way ahead of it's time.
My dad and I played through this game in 1990 it was awesome
56:31....as a 80's kid I always thought he stepped on a lego brick😅
As watching the video, I do not feel asleep.
Someday someone will make a great step by step walkthrough of this game!
lol pet the dogs? This is funny your punching the dogs not petting them! It's great though how the dog doesn't want to beat up any other dogs and I when I got through this game, had gone the hard way through the deserts and the pit fall rooms, just because I had no idea there was alternative ways to go.
Very nicely done. I've only recently come across your channel, I'm enjoying your works, and I'm telling my friends about this channel. Several of us are Metal Gear fans, please please do snake's revenge and metal gear 2: solid snake.
Thanks, Keith! I love the Metal Gear sequels, so I will definitely get to them!
Awesome work man ! 👍 I've been pleasantly 'stuck' on your Channel for the last few days, happily with no end in sight 😎
Sadly, all I own of my original NES copy of the game, is the box 😞 Although I do have a framed Aliens poster with Micheal Biehn's autograph - I should have had him sign the MG box !
As long as you've taken the time to get some ammo for it before being captured, using the grenade launcher against the Shotgunner is also an option. A bit tricky, but fun!
I played this when i was a kid, it was a great time 🙂 I used to try to randomly get a correct save password and it worked
Oh wow! I used to try that kind of thing in other games, but it rarely worked. Usually only in games with short passwords like Bubble Bobble.
