I just want to point out how much time, and effort it must take to make these videos. The amount of work alone makes this channel my new favorite. I'm beyond impressed that he post every week a new video.
This was another extremely confusing, zero context game fron the NES era. Nintendo Power was instrumental in explaining the framing and concept of a game, versus manuals rife with very poor translations, from time to time. Also, games didn't hold your hand then, so its understandable, being kids and what not. Adults struggle with this game oddly enough.
It was a good collection but had some weird glitches. I wouldn't call it a bad port by any stretch, but it feels weird playing it back to back to the NES version.
Haven't played this game in decades, and don't think I've ever known or heard rumors about those level skip tricks. Bravo! That 2nd to last boss strider matic is even easier than you've shown. From what I recall, he only attacks when you do, so you can just charge your cypher plasma and shoot him, then he'll hop back for his weapon while you are charging another plasma blast... fire plasma again, rinse and repeat.
Yes, it seems the Plasma has similar properties to the other projectiles, and it's way easier to use that then to attempt to use Fire. Matic will *not* attack until you do and the Plasma will always disarm him. Any attempt to simply swing at him will result in him disarming you.
This was one of my absolute favorite NES games, This and Bionic commando were always on queue for a marathon all day play-a-thon when I was young enough to be able to do it lol. Great video!!!
Agreed. It should have been a HELL of a lot easier to do, like how you could do it with Batman in _Batman: The Video Game_ on the NES. To be fair, _Strider_ on NES is buggy as hell (as seen in this video with its bug cheats), and the unofficially-released, WIP Japanese version is even more buggy but playable, and can completely be played through.
Yes. If and if things in space weren’t so far away, they’d be closer. If the grand canyon wasn’t so deep, it wouldn’t be as deep as it is. Like fuckin thanks capt obvious
For the young kids who didn't grow up with 80's - early 90's PC gaming, the sprite for "file number 5" in the beginning is a 5.25 inch floppy disk. They were extremely flimsy and prone to data corruption if you got oil or fingerprints on the wrong part of the disk.
@@malkmut2189 this was that fate of any that suffered corruption. Some of them sort of "Impact-unfolded" if spiked into the floor, causing the disc to eject quite energetically. Its fascinating how its just splayed apart like that and the disc becomes a projectile. Hurts to be pelted by one, too.
@@pauljackson3491 Glad you asked, 5.25" floppy disks had a recessed notch near the top of one of the sides of the disk, whereas 8" floppy disks traditionally didn't. The disks in this game have the notch :) And besides, if you're going to build a high tech space station, you're gonna want to use awesome technology. I mean, if it's just a plain old space station, 8" disks are fine. But if you want that teleportation feature to work reliably and not scramble your atoms, you better upgrade to 5.25"! Edit: though judging by the relative size of it compared to strider, you'd think it was a 30 inch floppy.
This is just speculation on my part, but I do believe the character designer that did Hiryu's moving animation was trying to do the stylish ninja "running" seen in anime and manga by ninja characters, but it came of looking like he's marching, LOL. In my humble opinion, I think it would have been best if NES Hiryu had the same or similar walking animation as his arcade and 16-bit incarnation.

*Not-so Fun Fact* When I was in Kindergarten, I tried to slide down a drainage pipe on the playground like Strider and got my knee stuck. I was stuck for 2 hours before the teacher realized that I wasn't in class. I have had a fear of cramped spaces ever since.
That sucks, I feel for you there. I once got attacked in a public pool by older kids because I was mouthy, but I nearly drowned trying to fight them off. It took the guards way too long, so now I fear water. However, as a kid, Strider made me fearless a bit too. In 91, I jumped in front of a Toyota Carolla and saved my cat by scooping it up, and rolling into the ditch on the other side of the road. Literal puma rolling pounced my cat, at 9. Now I think, this game was dangerous to youth for sure, cause I hear a lot of people have a Strider story from my age group, and some good, some bad, some tragic, and some magic.
Back to my eight frade days, where this was one of the games me and my best buddy played A LOT. Weeks stucked at Egypt. One day, out of pure frustration, started jumping again and again against the wall. From Egypt to the Red Dragon in one go. That was epic!! Thanks for your content!!
One of the best NES games ever made. For all its jankyness I still loved playing it. Shame it was so easy but the journey itself was great to make. Also you can beat Matic without energy just using the plasma charge on the cypher. He just walks right up to you and never even attacks.
I came for, "What if I told you...", stayed for, "all of that and more" being undisappointed with this play through. This and bionic commando were fun but really hard as a kid. Seeing them soundly beaten with your brand of buttery smooth and calming commentary. It makes the victory all the more sweet in the end. I also love seeing the channel grow leaps and bounds nearly every month it seems!

I've never even played Strider before! This is the first "YOU can BEAT" I've seen for a game I don't have - and it looks AWESOME so now I want it really bad!
Love this game! I do have a suggestion on a few games that I never beat that I would LOVE to see you make a video on in the near future. Battle of Olympus (reminds me of Zelda 2) and Athena, love your channel and content!
You forgot the fact that Strider returned to public memory with Hiryu's appearance in Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes, becoming a mainstay of the fighting saga.
I was waiting for this 1. 1 of my favorite games that I was never able to beat. I seen videos of ppl beating it but I never did. I can play this game all day.
Fond memories completing this game after renting it from Phar-Mor (a drug store that had a movie/game rental department) back in the day. Rented it several times and always played it after a ripping copious amounts of dank from the ol' bubbler. Great times!
I remember playing this game in 89 and played it for hours and hours, it's endless, there is so much going on. I always got that warm fuzzy feeling about the floppy in the computer and uploading your data, oddly enough. Something about being whisked off the earth and back up to your ship, didn't feel like star trek, but something more powerful. The Genesis version I loved, but the NES version felt far different from the other, naturally, this video explains why.
If you don't have energy when you fight the final strider boss Matic, you can simply hold your sword up to charge it and and kill him that way. He is very simple and won't even attack while you charge your strike.
My son who love retro games as a kid loved this one the most I even got it for him on the PSN on two different systems this has to be my favorite video that you have done because now he's in college and everytime he comes over we'll play it together
Cool to see someone else who loves the NES Strider game. There's people who analyze this game to death and tear it apart. But I still love this game and have fun playing it. The wall jumping can be a pain, but it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. Awesome video, Bro!! 🤩👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
There's an easier way to beat Matic!! just press UP on the D pad to charge that plasma attack and shoot! Matic will jump in place repeatedly! and let you hit him I figured this out at 8 yrs old! back in 93' 😁
Yup, back in 2006 or 7 when I played it for the 1st time, I took me a while to figure out how to beat Matic, I honestly didn't know about the Fire trick (heck, I literally never used tricks at all back then... but I think any proyectile type move will do the trick) so... I just had to experiment until I got to the Plasma Shot as I noticed that Matic just waits for you to make the move to counter so... that helped me to think what I could do and make him enter in a loop were I could go ballistic without problems.
I spent all morning refreshing this channel just to catch this game. Then I got called into work and I did not get to finish it until now. Good job Mr U. I am excited about this channel I keep guessing what's going to be next.
I love this game, if I ever have the money I would love to make Strider Movies. A few notes, instead of scrolling threw all the worlds, press left and you will be brought to the last world you acquired. Plasma is how I defeat the last boss. Well I guess second to last if you count the main tree. The shield guy is easier then you made it out to be. Do not slide under him, walk and then you can get into a jumping rhythm that does not allow him to turn around. I've never known the Lava in Africa to damage you? You were doing a really bad job jumping over the Alligators that you were taking damage from.. 41:42 I always have trouble climbing up from that pit. A combo of the level design with the strange jumping mechanics. I do believe Sheena Dies, you do see her get hit by an enemy. I think he drama of the ending is that all of Hiryu's Friends are dead. In Australia I always have a problem with the third jump. I can not get over the gap without jump. Matic super easy, just go all the way to the right of the screen charge your plasma and fire it at him He will wait for you.. he it him with your sword till he gets his weapon back. Then repeat. I never take damage on him. The ending has always been emotional to me.
@@UCanBeatVideoGamesI think you would do great with some deep dives on a few of the best classic video games. Maybe do a top 10 deep dive. You have a great voice for it and they don't have to be very long videos at all. Just a thought.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames Actually what would be better than regular top 10 would be a deep dive on some of the most unknown games. You'd have to do them 1 at a time of course. You could even do a faux-poll and say like for this game or comment for that game or tell me what game or poll you'd like to see next in the comments. Sounds cheesy but an interactive comment poll is one of the best ways to boost your engagement. And you gotta get that engagement up for the almighty algorithm to show you on the recommended tab, or even the fabled front page! Also make some fun fact shorts for your channel. Those seem to get TONS of engagement and people like to click through and just watch every short a single channel has. I've seen people sit and watch 200 30 second shorts then say they could never sit through a single hour long video.
I cant imagine the time you take to gather all the great info on each of these games. Thanks for this, while I no longer have my old NES I do enjoy watching this channel.
Matic can disarm you then slice you to ribbons if you go head to head with him. You can disarm him as well but it is difficult because he is so fast. If for some reason you ARE out of energy in the fight against Matic try the following: jump, Matic will jump just after you. Because of this slight delay you will begin to descend from the jump before he does. Swing at his feet to damage him and his Cypher will pass just over your head. If you swing at any other time he will disarm you or hit you outright. You may have to jump continuously for the timing to be just right before attacking him. This was how I beat him in the 80s. I didn't discover the Fire trick disarm until I had beat the game several times. Thanks so much for this video. Strider is one of those benchmark NES games for me growing up that no one else I have ever met had even heard of. What a sense of nostalgia watching you play through this. And the glitch tricks were neat to see. I had to figure the game out through weeks of trial and error and mastering the triangle jump. Again thanks for this and all of your others videos. What a stellar channel!
I loved this game when it came out. Never thought to hit Mastic with the fire trick. I always just used the plasma arrow. I could disarm him, then hit him with another before he rearmed. Took a lot like anger, but it worked.
Loved this game on the NES. I must have played this game hundreds of time. The only hitch I ran into was pulling off the triangle jump at times. It was a little buggy in my humble opinion.
I owned this game all throughout my childhood and could NOT find my way of the first level. I could never figure out how to get past one of the blue/white doors if I remember correctly. Most your videos I watch for pleasure, but this?.... ... This is RESEARCH!
I remember renting this game and not knowing you could change area... I only learned later that you could transfer to other section and I rented it again and played until I finished it. The wall jump still haunts my dreams!!!
I just discovered your channel last week. Looking forward to more videos. Also are you planning to do any NES dungeon rpgs like Bard's Tale or the Wizardry series?
I just thought about it, I'm so excited to eventually see you do Jackal and Top Gun. I know you have a super long list but I hope you eventually do every game haha
This was a really good video. Even as a grown man, the title screen still makes my body shiver hearing that loud-ass lightning-strike sound effect in the title screen BGM followed by the stylized kanji for "Hiryu" that pops up without a warning and looks somewhat scary. I can't believe that this whole game can be beaten in an estimated hour if you know what you're doing. Great job! Also, on the subject of the character Sheena: in the manga, it was heavily implied that she was in love with Hiryu. Unfortunately, only a small amount of the manga was fan-translated into English, let alone scanned and released online. Well, keep up the good work.
Hey man, love your work. I'm about to work on a review of this game as i just finished it for the first time. No, i didn't use your video to help but i wanted to see how you did it after the fact. I wanted to share with you a trick i discovered during the final boss with Matic. i didn't know you could use the fire on him but what actually ended up working for me and in my opinion is easier. When the fight starts, Just hold up and charge the cipher and hit him with a Plasma shot. Matic will NOT hurt you while charging the sword (He just stands there) and the Plasma shot will knock his sword out of his hands. you can rinse and repeat this and get him down in about 2 cycles. Anyway. Nice video dude. ~Bill
Man your channel has become my sunday-monday obsession. Love seeing ur progress and also obviously seeing how you finish games that I had not the opportunity to play during childhood. Keep going!
I remember renting this game as a kid, I don't remember if I was able to figure any of it out though. I think it went over my head to be able to finish....
I never heard of this on genesis til I was an adult but played this a lot on nes. The title music and music in front of the big computer on blue dragon are great. Whats with Capcoms love affair with big computers? I love that the final boss is so easy.
This has to be one of my favorite new channels I've found. It's cool to see all the games with a walk through. I had beaten just about half of what you have listed so far, back in the day. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for this; I've always wanted to get into this, but I could never get through Kazakhstan... turns out I wasn't supposed to. I'm definitely going to give this another shot now.
Great video! I didn't agree with all the strats but there was lots of good advice, and I loved the glitch shortcuts. Never knew about the Australia door skip!
Once again, amazing walkthrough. The clearest walkthroughs I ever seen on TH-cam. Loved this one. I need one request though. Please do The Battle of Olympus. I could never finish this game for the life of me. I want to beat this game once and for all.
You actually don't need any energy when fighting Matic. You can just stand in front of him and do the sword charge and shoot his weapon out of his hand. He only attacks you if you swing at him when he has his sword and knocks your sword from your hand.
57:35 I never even thought of using the Fire technique against Matic. I always used the plasma arrow, which is easier since you don’t have to take the time to switch weapons during your short attack window. Also you don’t have to save up energy for the fight, except for Medical if needed. You have time to charge the plasma arrow because Matic will just stand in front of you and won’t attack unless you swing your Cipher at him.
another great choice for the game ,, thansk man , i watch these over and over and over i enjoy them , you do a great job with them all, thanks really man
If you don't have any energy for Matic then stay all the way to the right, keep holding up to charge your plasma arrow, and fire every time you got a shot. You'll keep him bouncing back for his cipher the whole battle.
Thanks Chris! i've def been thinking about getting a Patreon up, but was thinking about releasing some merch like T-Shirts first - do you think people would like that?
For the tornado guy, as he jumps over you, you can do a short jump while holding your cypher up. It'll damage him and you can avoid damage, if you don't jump too high. For Matic, use fire and switch back to your sword. Then charge up a plasma shot, over and over. He'll never touch you..
I remember my friends older brother and his friends playing this game when I was like, 6. Fast forward a couple years and a few towns later, I got a hold of a copy I borrowed and used the tricks I learned a few years ago by spectating and got all floppy disks...fast forward to 12 years old and I bought the game in a discount bin and while I never beat the game, I got damn far. Good shit. I'll be 40 in July and I have all but nothing for video games left...but I do have a new Retro-Duo, which plays NES/SNES games. Sadly, I only have 2 NES cartridges, and 8 SNES cartridges...Wizardry 1 and 2 for NES, and FF6, Mario All-Stars, Shadowrun, Earthbound, Yoshi's Island, Tin Star, Wizardry 5, and Tetris 2. Time to search Amazon for some other classics.
The little buzzing thing that happens on the map and file screens sounded like the buzzing of a washing machine that I had once that let me know when the laundry was done.

Cool to see someone else who loves the NES Strider game. There's people who analyze this game to death and tear it apart. But I still love this game and have fun playing it. The wall jumping can be a pain, but it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. Awesome video, Bro!! 🤩👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
When I was a kid the first time I played the game I didn't like it, and ever since I haven't played again so I will give it a shot.
its a cool one!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames I've never played it either! I'll try it!
I never understood Strider. All this time, I had another Metroidvania in my hands. Most misunderstood game on NES next to Metroid 1.
Yeah I honestly never knew the back story on this. Awesome
Yessssssss! One of the most under-represented NES games that I was the only one I knew that loved it.
There's an easier way to beat Matic!!
just press UP on the D pad to charge that plasma attack and shoot!
Matic will jump in place repeatedly! and let you hit him
I figured this out at 8 yrs old!
back in 93' 😁
Yup, back in 2006 or 7 when I played it for the 1st time, I took me a while to figure out how to beat Matic, I honestly didn't know about the Fire trick (heck, I literally never used tricks at all back then... but I think any proyectile type move will do the trick) so... I just had to experiment until I got to the Plasma Shot as I noticed that Matic just waits for you to make the move to counter so... that helped me to think what I could do and make him enter in a loop were I could go ballistic without problems.
Great video! I loved this game so much that I bought it after I rented it. Capcom killed it.
Strider was definitely one of my favorite nes games when I was a kid
Oh man...this game is a CLASSIC! one of the best OSTs
I absolutely LOVE your channel! I'm so glad I stumbled upon it. Thank you for your hard work!
Thank you!! Glad you're enjoying it!
This is my favorite nes game i beat this a few times lets see how you get down by the way i love your channel
Looking forward to watching this later. Definitely at the top of my TH-cam channels!
I cant imagine the time you take to gather all the great info on each of these games. Thanks for this, while I no longer have my old NES I do enjoy watching this channel.
I remember renting this game as a kid and being stuck on the first level for all weekend eneded up just going around everywhere that first level.
My Cat used to play video games with me, but she passed away last Sunday November 27th.
Now I can't stop thinking about a U Can Beat - Clash at Demonhead
I loved this game when it came out. Never thought to hit Mastic with the fire trick. I always just used the plasma arrow. I could disarm him, then hit him with another before he rearmed. Took a lot like anger, but it worked.
I think this game is very very good!!
Loved this game on the NES. I must have played this game hundreds of time. The only hitch I ran into was pulling off the triangle jump at times. It was a little buggy in my humble opinion.
it does feel awkward. i think they were too worried about it making the game too easy that they made it extra hard to pull off.
I always liked this version better than the arcade or Genesis versions. The adventure aspects just make it so much more enjoyable.
woah
This game was how I learned where Kazakhstan is
Me too -when Borat came out, I remember thinking "is he from that place in Strider?"
Very nice! Great success!
I thought everyone learned cos of Borat.
~Bill
I think you've done really well on all of these guides.
The dog always provides the game ! He must have a pretty nice collection !
I had forgotten about the NES version of this game. Another quality walkthrough. You're a legend!
@44:03 "....that item is poison so you want to avoid it, but I did collect it so you can see what it does".
Very smooth, indeed!
New Saturday morning habit to watch your new videos asap!
Thanks, Carlo!
WHAT?! This is a Metroidvania?? Always figured it was just a straight port. This is gonna be awesome to watch.
Man your channel has become my sunday-monday obsession. Love seeing ur progress and also obviously seeing how you finish games that I had not the opportunity to play during childhood. Keep going!
As usual my friend thank you for this. Your channel is truly under-rated. Great choice this week.
I was up early waiting for this to be posted. Never know what classic NES game we'll see and I love it
This was the first castlevania game I played,I loves it
I love this game and the manga that came with it. The manga was so well done it needs a release again. It was really bloodied and fun to read
Happy to see this, I didn't get to play this much on the NES. I only ever rented it once.
Thanks, Harry! This one is pretty good, but it doesn't seem like people talk about it much.
This has to be one of my favorite new channels I've found. It's cool to see all the games with a walk through. I had beaten just about half of what you have listed so far, back in the day.
Keep up the good work!
Love this game. I remember playing way back in 89 when it was released.
Thank you for this; I've always wanted to get into this, but I could never get through Kazakhstan... turns out I wasn't supposed to. I'm definitely going to give this another shot now.
I loved this game as a kid. Was hard for me at first. I learned the patterns and the levels. Thumbs were always sore ahha
Great video! I didn't agree with all the strats but there was lots of good advice, and I loved the glitch shortcuts. Never knew about the Australia door skip!
Great vid. Brought me back to my childhood. Don’t sleep on the plasma charge. In some ways it’s kinda OP.
You'll keep him bouncing back for his cipher the whole battle.
another game i've never heard of back in the day. nice job beating it.
I've quickly come to look forward to these videos every week. Thank you for the work you do. Please make a Patreon so I can give you my money.
Thanks Chris! i've def been thinking about getting a Patreon up, but was thinking about releasing some merch like T-Shirts first - do you think people would like that?
@@UCanBeatVideoGames Let's let the masses decide that... with their money!
Thanks. Always wondered what the sword on the last board was for.
Another ep knocked out the park, thanks so much man, your show has become my new must watch thing on youtube!
For the tornado guy, as he jumps over you, you can do a short jump while holding your cypher up. It'll damage him and you can avoid damage, if you don't jump too high. For Matic, use fire and switch back to your sword. Then charge up a plasma shot, over and over. He'll never touch you..
One of my favorite games of all time !! Thank you !!
This game feels a bit choppy at times, but the soundtrack is awesome! Love how the new strider has some of thoses tracks...
You can use plasma arrow on matic
That is what Nintendo power told me.
Get the power.
