STRONGLY suggest you start using trekking poles. Your back will thank you, so will your shoulders, ankles, knees. You won't fall nearly as easily, and you can more easily walk further. We didn't, until my wife took a very serious fall (she's fine), but especially on desert trails, your feet can just sail out from under you soooo easily. There are many to choose from, and they all work about the same, so get some that look cool! They are telescoping, so they store well, and they need no maintenance.

plus the gloves. you get bicycle gloves that have padded palms and are fingerless. I did a lot of hiking and this combination will keep you steady and save your hands too. Most trekking poles have loops to go around your wrists so you don't have to 'hang on' to them if you are carrying a phone or camera and want to quickly use it for a sec or two.

The best Rv winter location is the Rio Grande valley in south Texas along the rio grand River. Cheapest cost but most park camaraderie & activities. Some parks have a thousand sites, most have auditorium & weekly concerts. Some have wood shops, ceramics shops, sewing shops, stained glass. A few have restaurants. Can’t say enough about the Rio Grande Valley.

Went to SW Texas - Alpine, Marfa Big Bend 2/14/21 thru 2/19/21. Temp was 6-8 degrees at night and got hit with 2 separate winter storms that both dumped greater than 6" of snow. I love that area been back twice since, but now I check the weather first. Never seen a single digit temp or snow south of Clearwater, FL. There is a reason people head to FL in the winter.

Really don't know why anyone would want to winter in Florida. 90F temps with 90+% humidity...you can have it. That's no fun. Stay in Arizona in the winter and enjoy 65F - 75F temps with 10% humidity. Just be out by April and don't return until November. Visit Montana in the summer and Arizona in the winter.

SW Arizona in the Yuma desert area.
With Base access, you can stay at Yuma Proving Grounds (YPG) RV campground "Desert Breeze Travel Camp". No Exchange but they have a Commissary and a gas station that sells propane. Have to run into Yuma for diesel.
    Lots of BLM for boondocking.
American Girl Mine just inside of California and about 20 minutes West of Yuma.
Mittry Lake about 15 minutes from Yuma but it's a 10 day/calendar year.
Imperial Dam LTVA about 30 minutes from Yuma.
Quartzsite, Arizona has several LTVA areas as well as 14 day free BLM areas.
Kofa National Wildlife Refuge BLM 14 day stay area. 2 general areas most boondock. One is about 20 minutes South of Quartzsite and the other is 30 minutes.
Another military famcamp at USMC Venture Lodging at Martinez Lake. Nice and quiet on the lake. About halfway between Yuma and Quartzsite.

I'm a little biased but I'd suggest Hurricane, Utah because I live near by. It's approx 65 miles to Kanab that is the Mecca for western movie making during the Gun Smoke, John Wayne and Client Eastwood movie era. From Hurricane, Utah your 20 miles to St.George, Utah and 65 miles to Mesquite, NV for your gambling fix. If you prefer Las Vegas nightlife its 140 miles south for a short weekend get away. Southern Utah is home to the Mighty Five National Parks, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. Lake Powell is also 140 miles east of Hurricane along with the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
There are a number of Utah State Parks in and around the area also. Sand Hollow State Park and Snow Canyon State Park are favorites the offer Great Hiking, Biking, Fishing and OHV Riding. When it starts to warm up your close to I-15 for North and South get away or I-70 for East bound travel . There are plenty of RV parks in Hurricane or with in a 10 to 15 mile radius.
When we retired these are the major reasons we chose this area to retire!! Last Spring and Summer then again in the Fall we drove a total of 10,000 miles in our Fleetwood Discovery but always love coming home to the Hurricane Valley here in Utah!!

If I'm not mistaken that is a WWII vintage grey desk made by Steelcase in Grand Rapids Michigan. I've seen a million, well at least a few hundred of them in my life. But did the chocolate chip cookies come with a big glass of cold milk? If they didn't how did you possibly eat them? Right now my favorite place to winter is Lake Okeechobee because I can go fishing every day, but that may change next winter. Keep the good stuff coming guys.

Re trekking poles, I thought I would never use them. I bought some carbon poles at Columbia and my husband and I each use one much of the time now. If you go again, don’t miss sitting on “The Porch” at “Ghost Town” Terlingua and enjoy a good bottle of Texas Beer. Then dinner at The Starlight, right next door. This will be our 4th winter to head to West Texas. We stay about 45 min south of Alpine near Terlingua.

I'm finally on the road in my RV!!! Yahoo! Left PA on December 26 and not planning to return until August. I've never considered west Texas for the wintering but I might stop in Marfa. I'm currently in a Walmart parking lot in Mt Airy NC. After a visit to the Andy Griffith museum and a look at the Mayberry jail I'll be heading to Florida. Next stop is Andersonville National Historic Site in GA. After a week in Florida, it's west to Quartzite AZ for a week. I'm going to stay in LTBLM land until spring. Then it's north and eventually to AK.
I'm happy that you and Phil are back in the states.
    Safe travels to everyone.

If you’re still in W.Tx, check out Seminole Canyon State Park, about midway between Alpine and San Antonio. Easy access, nice affordable camp sites, awesome night sky watching, and DON’T MISS the ranger-guided tour of the petroglyphs on the canyon wall. This was a surprise highlight of our 3-month western loop tour this year. Even Phil will appreciate the history on those walls!

We love the Alpine/Big Bend area! We've stayed at the Lost Alaskan RV Park and it's a great place to stay and visit all the sites in Marathon, Big Bend, Ft. Davis, Marfa, & Balmorhea. Phil needs to watch Giant! There are some Giant signs west of Marfa where part of the movie was filmed. Davis Mountain State Park is a great place to stay with pleanty of trails. We will be volunteering there for two months in 2024. Also the Brick Vault Brewery and Barbecue in Marathon is a fun place to enjoy a local brew and good bbq!

We winter at Fun N Sun RV Resort and Retirement Community (th-cam.com/video/659CXRapW-E/w-d-xo.html) in San Benito, Texas. It’s our yearly 4-month ‘vacation.’ Calling it an RV resort is a disservice: it’s actually an adult summer camp. If you’re bored here it’s ’cause you didn’t get your keister out the door! The 2 biggest ‘problems’ are over-eating and over-doing! Unbelievable amenities at an incredible price: don’t think you can find a better value anywhere in the U.S.!

Another great video highlighting some of the places we like to visit as San Antonio residents. Next time out West, plan a stop at Balmorhea State Park. It has a huge spring fed pool in the middle of the desert and a small campground. At one time you could even get Scuba certified in the middle of the West Texas desert. Have fun!

Ya'll were right, Marfa isn't the middle of nowhere, but if you get on your tiptoes, you can certainly see the middle of nowhere.

That whole area out there is beautiful and a very nice place to visit.
Warning, in the summer time this can be about 20 degrees cooler than the face of the sun. Still nice area, lots to see, but you can expect to perspire profusely.
