Thank youuuuuuu! I'm playing D&D tomorrow for the first time and I had to make a character... I naively didn't know it would take me so long. They sent me the beginners hand book, but that's so daunting to read through before I even know if I'll enjoy the game play. So I'm so glad that I found this video! I couldn't choose the half-elf ranger, as another in the group is a wood elf ranger, so went with half-elf rogue, but this was amazing as a reference to work with!
A group from my office has decided to start a guild and we are all entirely green. Your channel has been a Godsend! Helping my guild build their characters using the character sheet and my DnD manual tomorrow night at a local tavern. Can't wait!
Great stuff! Good to see you back with a new installment. I link one of these or one of Matt's chargen videos when one of my players needs a succint overview of what a certain class is about.
Dude, you have no idea how helpful this was! I could seriously hug you (But that might be weird)! :) Thank you thank you thank you. Character creation has always been a bit intimidating for me so it was SO SUPER HELPFUL watching your video that broke it down step by step.
+WASD20 I Awesome! I really recommend it. That's right where things really start picking up. Then 8/9/10 are a lot of set up / calm before the storm, but it's worth it. Because the last few books are amazing.
Thanks for all your videos. I'm preparing for my very first session and your videos with explanations of the basic rules (especially the example sessions with your son Caleb ;) ) and how to create a character are really helpful! I decided together with my DM that I'm going to play a Forest Gnome ranger with outlander background as my first character. Probably gonna pick beast master as subclass once I reach level 3.
folks should look up the dragon magazine number 43 I think. in the mag it has a special class called ranger/mage. just something everyone should look into
Enjoyed watching a ranger creation, I might play one now because of it. Nate, do you think you could try making a series of vids in which you create a campaign with the DM guide? It would be tons helpful and fun.
Not a bad idea, Chase. I'd consider it. Doing some world building and campaign building using the DM guide as well as the Pathfinder GM guide would be pretty cool. Thanks for the suggestion.
So is a ranger the best class if you want to be a stealthy archer? Cause I read rangers apprentice and they were pretty much stealth archers and I think i want a stealth archer but not sure what class to go
+RPG Havok The definition of a stealth archer is a Ranger, what Will does, is a Ranger. They protect people and use their wit and dexterity to do so. (if you look on the D&D web sight under the ranger class it goes into more detail)
+RPG Havok -- You could absolutely go Ranger. My wife happens to play a rogue archer, which works pretty well too. Different benefits, so read about them in the PHB.
I'm a noob at d and d and I resonantly purchased the d and d starter kit and was wonder if I get the players hand book you always talk about in it? BTW I LOVE YOUR VIDS
+joshua gamingeek -- If you can spare the money and want all the options, the PHB is great. I discuss it a little more in my buyer's guide: www.wasd20.net/dd-buyers-guide/ -- Good luck!
No, you do not get the Players Handbook in the starter kit. There is a guide to basic rules and some pregenerated characters in the starter set. The adventure scenario, The Lost Mines of Phandelver is included, and very good for new players! The Players Handbook is a hardcover book available separately. It's currently about $25 on Amazon.com, and I believe there is a holiday book code for 30% off that expires tonight (a bit after midnight)! (HOLIDAY30) So it would be a good time to snag a copy! :)
+Trollstrolch -- Cool. Yeah, I'm always a fan of a character with an interesting story more than a great 'build'. Partially because I'm not a very good optimizer, perhaps. :)
sorry but i can't understand what the dot in the left of animal handling, survival etc means(have a bonus or somthing? ) can you please give me a page number where i can learn the meanning of it or if you could help me out..I really liike your videos and help me alot thx
+ASLAR91 -- I may not have explained that well, but those are the skills a character is proficient in. Those come from background and class (you get to choose some). When you are proficient in a skill you don't only get to add your ability score bonus (like my +3 for DEX, but also my proficiency bonus which is +2 for a level one character.) That';s why my stealth is +5 instead of +3 in this case. I am proficient in stealth.
Nate, I have made a character that dualwields 2 daggers, both with a +5 attack bonus. If they both hit they do 12-18 damage, is that good or a bit overpowerd?
Oh boy. Did you need to spam comments so heavily? If you watch this video you'll see how I determine ability scores. The 'set them at whatever you want' method is not a valid way of determining them.
I was just wondering, how do you actually calculate damage during a fight? I know you roll the d20 to see if it hits but how do I calculate the damage or where do I take it from?
+Sitrucize -- You would probably find this one helpful -- th-cam.com/video/jT3FRzEJDp8/w-d-xo.html&lc=z13dj33x5l2gjxnkx222vhnoyv2awbbpy04 I talk about it towards the end of this one as well as in part 2.
In your opinion, would a Criminal Background fit with a Half Elf Ranger? I have this idea that her clan was betrayed by someone in their circle who helped the Drow plan an attack. She was the only survivor and she fled to the cities to escape. Harbering great anger and resentment, she turned to crime to keep herself fed and to satiate some of that rage. But she's trying to redeem herself now that she's a bit older and has grown. Does that sound like a conflicting idea, or do you think it could work? I have my first game next week and I'm so nervous 😅
Yes. I don't see why not. Most clerics seem to go with a melee weapon to compliment spellcasting, but you could absolutely use a shortbow if you wanted to focus on that.
Drows actually talk Undercommon or just normal Elvish and have no particular language of their own. Also, I think you should mark Elves as your favorite enemy, as it is the species name (just like Goblinodes give knowledge of the Goblins, Hobegoblins and Bugbears).
+Jens Heika Simonsen (The Sniper) -- Hmm. I had forgotten that about languages. Thanks! Been about 20 years since I read the Drizzt books :) I wouldn't feel right marking elves as favored enemies here though, even if I am trading some benefits by getting too specific.
WASD20 Well, you can do whatever you want when you don't have to present it for a GM. Also, have you thought about using the standard array or point by for balance?
+KhaKindos -- Next week most likely have part 6 (the final one in THIS map series), and then sometime in the December 20s I'll be doing the 2nd 'Mappening' live event.
Yeah, as a viewer those are the videos I would like more too :) But longer ones are live events and allow for some fun interaction with viewers in real time, so I'll probably keep those going once a month. Hopefully there will continue to be some of both. Thanks for the feedback!
Nope. A couple reasons it doesn't work that way: 1) You don't add the 17 at all. The 17 helps determine the number you WILL add to your rolls, which is called the modifier. An ability score of 17 gives a modifier of +3, which you would then add to your d20 roll. So this means you'd be rolling anywhere from a 4 to a 23. Lots of room for failure there. :) 2) Difficulty class (the number you need to roll to succeed on a given task) doesn't max out at 20. A nearly impossible task could even have a DC of 25 or 30.
The link in the description has links to the character sheet folder. In the 5th edition character sheet folder (it comes as a zip file) you'll find a form fillable PDF. I use Foxit Reader to edit PDFs. It's a free program.

can you do a tutorial on how to Multi-class? I've heard its possible and has drawbacks, but I'm still interested in seeing the process

The Wheel of time is my favorite book series ever, and Lan is totally the Aragorn of the series, but I dont know how far you are.
I'm stalled after book 3, and hopefully will pick them back up in the summertime when I have the time. :)
+WASD20 I
Awesome! I really recommend it. That's right where things really start picking up. Then 8/9/10 are a lot of set up / calm before the storm, but it's worth it. Because the last few books are amazing.
^^^ this is a nice way of saying that book 10 is a huge waste of words, but damn, you never got such vivid descriptions of cloths in all your life.
Ranger has always been my fav! Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Nate! This was really fun to watch
thanks man I really super new to D&D and im trying to learn and this helped
Nate thanks for making this series it's been really helpful.😀
P.s. Keep up the good work
+spottedflame flame -- Thanks!
This looks just like Baldurs Gate 3, that game is a great way to learn this
It’s fun! I’m enjoying it.

I finally found you, the person who actually helped really well cause I a noobie at this.

Thank you very much! I'm creating a Half-Elf Ranger and needed some guidance!! love your videos!
Just want to say that I love watching you in afistfulofdice's Provokers campaign! You guys make group goals!
I love hearing people talk about the wheel of time
You should check out Daniel Greene.
folks should look up the dragon magazine number 43 I think. in the mag it has a special class called ranger/mage. just something everyone should look into
This is one of my fav videos, mainly because Ranger is meh fav class to play! Thanks nate
I'm considering to share these with the New Zealand D&D facebook group.
+Fredrick Wheeler -- Go for it! :D
Wait... There's an NZ Group? May I join?
Yes there is, it's been running for about one and a half years. It's open to anyone living in New Zealand.

I love the rangers apprentice book series it was in the librarian favourites section of my school library
I’m creating a character soon and this was very helpful

I can not find the link for the character sheet you are showing in the video.
you got that right. one of my four characters is a elf ranger. and he is quite powerful.
shadow rush half elf or full?
***** full wood. but now I also have two jungle elves, a special race I created.
shadow rush What book do i need to create a character? i tried making one last night but im so confused. Im new to d&d.
***** I used 3.5 format so I would suggest get that one.

25:55 ... where's the video playlist?
This is the class and race I want to play. Thanks for this video 👍🏾
I like that you are not try to present a optimated build with a lot of min/maxing,
you even roll the dices and remember me, why i prefer point buy :)
+Trollstrolch -- Cool. Yeah, I'm always a fan of a character with an interesting story more than a great 'build'. Partially because I'm not a very good optimizer, perhaps. :)
any recommendations on how to level a ranger? i'm new to all this and my campaign we are starting all the characters are starting at level 6.
Working on an Aasimar ranger, hopefully works out good
This helped a lot. Thank you very much.

Coming across this in 2023 and wishing it was a book I could read lol, hope your first game went well.
hey the name lucas perenin does that have anything to do with perrin in the wheel of time series? it is a great series by the way
Anyone read Ranger's Apprentice?!?!?
I red all twelve
@@familyoshell6392 there are 14 now, with the 15th installment already on its way..!
@@vermaledijd592 that's a lot of books, did you read them all?
Do this work with high elf?
HI Nate, I have question, are nimphs dangerous????
would it be possible to create a wood elf cleric archer?
Yes. I don't see why not. Most clerics seem to go with a melee weapon to compliment spellcasting, but you could absolutely use a shortbow if you wanted to focus on that.
Or potentially a longbow depending on the type of cleric you create (not all clerics can wield martial weapons).
WASD20 do clerics have to use blunt weapons? thought I read that somewhere.
No they do not
Aren't you short 2 skills? You get 3 from hunter, 2 from background, 2 from half-elf? New at this...
what's the program you use to open the pdf? because I have the pdf complete and it's kinda horrible :c
I use Foxit Reader. It's really nice, and free.
I'm making a ranger with my husband for Roll 20, this saved my skin!

WASD20 Understandable.

what do you do with race bonuses
When will we see more maps!?

You're welcome.
Mountain Dwarf Ranger for me.
thank you so much for teaching me !!
Could you do a warlock creation
Yep. Coming soonish.
I love how the personality is 100% Aragorn, along with being kinda half elf (Kindasortanotreally)
+jackson edwards Okay in hindsight, that's completely off but hey, still an awesome personallity!
:D Haha.
I thought that rangers were boring but they are epic
Who's Aragorn?
He's one of the main characters in The Lord of the Rings.
If your dex is 17 +3 can you never fail a dex role?
Nope. A couple reasons it doesn't work that way:
1) You don't add the 17 at all. The 17 helps determine the number you WILL add to your rolls, which is called the modifier.
