      I think rogues would argue that their approach is the practical one. The difference IMO is that rangers have the skill to do the sneaky thing but choose to be honorable instead. Whereas the paladin is so honorable that it never enters his mind not to be.

      @Witchfinder Nielsen yep. I'm playing a chaotic neutral Half-Orc ranger right now. Orphaned due to his parents being murdered (illegitimate child in a community of allied orc and human clans, kept a secret. The orcs found out and slaughtered his family) during his childhood he left the orphanage and took to life in the wilderness, eventually working as a guide for parties traveling through the countryside.

      @Witchfinder Nielsen So Goblin hunter? I mean he'll do anything as long as it kills goblins/the enemy, whether that's poison, torture, ambushes, poison gas, flooding and besides using a bow he's also used daggers, throwing axes and a sling.

      My nephew absolutely shita on Ranger. He says a fighter is better using a bow, yet I've never met a fighter who preferred a bow to a sword, axe or hammer. Also, I think it's the best class where the class features are better used outside of battle than for it. Combat is amazing, but you spend more time out of combat.

    i avoided the "lone wolf" players by running a campaign that brought the party together by them all being adopted in childhood by the same woman whose goal it was to give misplaced orphans a home
    everyone gets a separate backstory but they're all adoptive siblings who have to stick together or they'll upset their mommy

    Back when I started playing D&D, in the late 70s, I always liked the Ranger. I haven't played it since I was in the Army (got out in '86) but recently my son started playing, so I just rolled up a Dragonborn Ranger to join in on the fun. But hearing all the historical and cultural references, I'm surprised not to have heard Daniel Boone get listed. Thinking back, he was one of my childhood heroes and likely the reason I always wanted to play a ranger. c.f. Davy Crockett.
    BTW, my 8 year old son likes your videos. Keep up the good work!

      Another classic ranger is Mowgli, who became a gamekeeper as an adult.

    • @luisaymerich9675
      @luisaymerich9675 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Last of the Mohicans included the telling of the massacre at Fort William Henry, an actual historical event, though the character of Hawkeye is fictional it too may be based on a real person. American history has many examples of real mountain men and frontiermen like Jeremiah Johnson, Buffalo Bill, and Kit Carson that serve as examples for rangers.
      I never read The Jungle Book. I didn't know the book showed Mowgli growing up to be a game warden. I did read Kim. His character will fit more the type of a rogue/spy.
      I think the character of Tarzan would be more a type of barbarian than ranger.

    You guys are probably too young for this reference but there was a movie in 1982 starring Marc Singer called "The Beastmaster" that I would often base my Ranger on. He fought with a black tiger (fighter), a pair of ferrets (cunning little thieves) and a hawk (his eyes in the sky). He used a two handed sword and strange boomerang as a ranged weapon.

    The ranger has always been my favorite class. My ranger is a half-elf, partially inspired by Tanis Half-Elven from the Dragonlance books. The reason for his connection to nature is that he is the son of the elven king, but his mother was human (they met while on a campaign in his younger days, but she died before they could wed). Growing up only half-elven, and in all regards a bastard in the eyes of the elves, he took to spending more time in the woodland outside the city. He became a protector and guide, helping lost travelers and also fighting off the denizens in the wood that would attack his people as well as wanderers that had been attacked by monsters.
    Statistically its not as optimized as elves, but he's a lot of fun to role-play, and he can still hold his own. I put the +1s in Dex and Wis, obviously, and with the feats you mentioned like Sharpshooter, he is very effective in combat. His skills are also what makes him well rounded and fun to play.

    This may be a bit of a stretch, but Samus Aran from Metroid is a Ranger:
    Her games have a great emphasis on exploration of the unknown: She travels through dangerous planets, uncivilized enviroments with different biomes and climates. And not only exploring, but surviving in these conditions are one of the main points of the game.
    Above that, combat is the second most prominent feature. If Samus had favored enemies, those are probably the space pirates and her greater favored enemy, Metroids.

    Varient Human grab Medium Armor Master at 1st level. Is my favorite build for rangers. Nothing like 17 AC without stealth disadvantage

    • @Nurk0m0rath
      @Nurk0m0rath 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Medium Armor Master is pretty good, but you can get 17 AC in studded leather armor (12 + 5 for dex 20). Half Plate gives 15 + 2 (or +3 with the feat) for 17(18) maximum AC. I can see where this might be tempting if you rolled rather badly or you're using the standard array so the highest you can get is 16 dex, but you're still going to want to max out dex anyway and half plate is expensive for that measly +1 potential AC. I would say reserve this particular build for a more melee focused ranger as it gives you the armor class up front and lets you focus on more strength-based weapons.

    • @jemm113
      @jemm113 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For STR rangers though, it's the go-to build to make sure they don't fall behind on armor. STR is the main way to do dual wielding by way of longswords. Though now a 1 lvl dip with monk using the new alternate class features UA let's you use longswords with dex so if that gets official publishing it may be the new go-to since lvl 20 ranger ability is garbage.
      (And the ranger's variant features actually make it not work since they forgot to write in that your marked target counts as your Favored enemy or whatnot since it was a replacement ability, whoops!)

    I was the ranger in a group trekking through the forest. It was up to me to find the best place to camp. Once, when I was otherwise occupied, the group decided to camp in this low spot which was prone to dampness. I liked to sleep in trees and didn't do it all the time preferring to stay on the ground when I was with a group. On this particular night, I slept in a tree.This same group was out hunting down a weird construct. The going got tough so the not-so-tough got going away from the area leaving me behind. I finished off the big baddie using my bow and colossus slayer, picked up some loot and headed back to camp. It was easy to track the path of the party. When I arrived, they were sitting in the damp with a puny fire talking about the best place to set up a toilet so that "stuff" wouldn't get in their bedrolls. I suggested they climb a tree and tie themselves to a branch for the night.

      Thank you. To be fair, those with whom I was playing were adolescent males and I am an over 50 year old female so real life experience may have been a factor in this episode. I haven't seen a video addressing the different playing styles of males/females or adults/adolescents. If one is considered, I have many insights. I have been playing for almost 40 years.

    Now whenever I think of a ranger, and the very few I have played myself, I always see it as that sniper who hits you across town blindfolded while aiming towards their feet, be it with spell or Arrow. Though one of my friends swears by the blade toting ranger, so here is a couple concepts we both came up with.
    First is mine. The Event Horizon Bullseye Ranger. This is a multiclass of The Horizon Walker Ranger and the Arcane Archer fighter. This is a Ranger who has decided that the Splitting of their bow and their Natural magic potential is not strong enough to hunt their prey in this or the other planes, and so they have decided to fuse them together to maximize their true power. They will go anyway and take any weird angle in order to get that shot and show the skill and power of a master of nature.
    Next my friends, which he lovingly calls, The Wilds Offspring Goblin Ranger. It is the multiclass of the Way of the Kensei monk and the Hunter Ranger, with the race Goblin. Sense wisdom and Dex are the highest stats normally on a ranger, why not take advantage of that by using the class that uses the exact same stats, while while also doing really good amounts of damage and having ac that would make most barbarian and paladin blush. Become that little goblin who was raised by ocelots and took up a fighting style from watching the creatures all around him and show the world the true ferocity of the wilds.

He turned out to be a powerful, well rounded character with magic initiate and martial adept feats that allowed him to disarm enemies and take the brunt of attacks. If you don't go ranged Ranger the Dual Weapon Mastery Feat goes a long way...does give you an extra hit to benefit from the hunter's mark.
    Either melee or ranged the Observant or even better Resilient Feats are good for bringing up your Wis some with a solid feat. Resilient shoring up easily the 2nd best saving throw to be proficient in. Exception is if you go Gloomstalker you get wisdom saving throw proficiency for free.
    Really should have brought up the "Revised Ranger" as for a straight up ranger its not over powered and much better especially the beast conclave one.
    Robin Hood is definitely a Swashbuckler Rogue. He is charming/dashing, steals as his main gimic, and loves attention. Charismatic is really not very "ranger" like persay.

      You can still benefit from dual wielding without taking either the fighting style or the feat, though it is true that you would benefit from taking both.
      Heartily disagree on the Robin Hood statement. Robin was never a pickpocket, cutpurse, burglar, or assassin. He did not keep thieves' tools in his back pocket or give any indication he knew how to pick locks. He disguised himself from time to time, and occasionally he had cause to climb into a second-story window, but these are things anyone can do, not just a rogue. Robin was an archer, swordsman, hunter, and rebel who had a strict moral code of his own that went contrary to popular law, which got him outlawed. He would scope out his targets and then defeat them in a sudden ambush, or better still, reveal his tactically superior position and convince them to simply surrender. And when he robbed people, he made his demands up front rather than sneaking things behind their backs. In certain versions, yes, he is a charismatic yet self-centered individual who loves attention, but there's nothing stopping a ranger from being the life of the party, and there's nothing that says only high-charisma people can be boastful. In fact a lot of people forget that the dashing rogue is a very specific archetype and not every rogue falls into it. I would argue that Robin could be D&Dized as a Hunter Ranger with the Folk Hero background, Archery fighting style, and Sharpshooter feat.

    My first ranger character was a high elf hunter ranger name Bethrynna Holimion, and I played her in my family's Tomb of Annihilation game. Her favored enemies were giants and undead, and her favored terrain was forests/jungles. She was born as a noble, heir to the throne at an Elven city. As part of her royal training, she learned to fight with various different weapons, gravitating towards the longbow. She used to be very charismatic as well, being trained in the art of diplomacy, and she also learned to play the lyre. But she had a wild side, as well. She would sneak into her father's meetings to eavesdrop on conversations. She would often venture out of the palace, disguising as a commoner so she could explore the city without being crowded by civilians. But she had to flee her home at an early age (for an elf) because her city was destroyed by rampaging giants. Knowing she wasn't skilled enough to take on the giants head-on, she fled the city into the surrounding wilderness, using the shadows of the buildings and trees as cover so the giants didn't notice her. She was the only one (that she knew of) who escaped. Bethrynna tracked the giants to their homeland, where she studied them, being careful not to be noticed by them. She studied their language, mannerisms, fighting strategies, and everything else she could learn about them. As soon as she felt like she was confident in her knowledge about them, she went back into the wilderness once again, determined not to let the giants track her. She learned to survive in the forests and jungles, since she knew this was where she'd be most able to hide from the giants. As she traveled, she came across a wood elf druid named Gallidan (played by my brother), who was living as a hermit. He wasn't really open about his past, but he was very kind. The two of them became good friends, and started traveling together. A few years later they met a human paladin named Sophronia (played by my mom). Although initially suspicious of her, Bethrynna became friends with her, as well. The three of them were summoned by a friend of Sophronia's who was suffering from the dreaded Death Curse. She sent them on a quest to explore the land of Chult and find an end to the death curse.

    Hey dungeon dudes , I love you guys and your awesome channel!, with all due respect I have a comment to make , the “conjure animals spell” does not say in anyway that the DM has to decide what animals are summoned, when you think about it, it makes sense that the player decides what creature he/she conjures, otherwise you take away the ability that decides weather the player wants to summon two big animals or a large pack of wolves. Also I don’t think that there is any “conjure “ spell that specifically states that the DM decides what’s conjured, I really think it’s for the same fact of giving the player the option to conjure a creature much the same way a person chooses a specific tool for the job at hand. Thanks keep up the good work!

    My favorite spell earlier on is Zephyr Strike. At least when I play, I notice that spell casters are more AoE style ranged marks, and Rangers are the ones best suited in hitting that one person who's just out of reach for your magic users and mele users to get... Normally a boss that gets really annoying.
    However, focusing on the bow makes you a great target for mele fighters and, given you can't quickly get rid of a longbow, Zephyr Strike is a great way to get out of a bad spot, avoid getting hit and take out the annoyance on the big baddy with some extra oomph to your attack.

  • @DavidSmith-jj7ll
    @DavidSmith-jj7ll 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Similar to the 'watch a nature doc' or Crocodile Dundee thing, I've kinda gone with a regular old country hick for my RP.
    Figuring out how to RP my new ranger was tough. I didn't want to go the Aragorn/Legolas route, and kinda settled on a halfling with the idea of starting off as something like the Sheriffs of the Shire - basically just guides and people who make sure there aren't robbers or wild beasts on the roads, and then takes that to the next level on the transition to Ranger. But I couldn't quite click with that into how to interact, without just being Merry or Pippin and that didn't work for me. Just felt cliched and boring as an RP inspiration.
    So I thought about his background some more, growing up in pastoral country (the rural part of Shadowdale, like a day's ride out from the village) but on the edge of Cormanthor, going hunting with his dad as a kid, really getting to know the wilds and survival, and realized that it sounded a lot like some of my 'hick' relatives/ancestors in rural Florida. All of the boys in the family and some of the girls spent a lot of time out in the scrub and swamps hunting or fishing or screwin' around. So just transplanting that to the D&D world, well while he was out playing and hunting and playing hide and seek with his friends out in the woods, he started picking up on the channels and flows of the magic that pervades nature, too.
    So now instead of trying to play up some crazy Welsh or Irish accent and pretending to be a character out of some novel, I just imagine what would happen if I translated my great uncle who could build a shelter out of palmetto fronds in two hours, and who would often feed his whole family from an afternoon fishing, and plunked him down in a world where he thinks, "Yeah them city folk are sorcerers and paladins an' sh_t, and all I got is my good ol' nature magic and my bow, but I can still go toe to toe with any of 'em, an get out in the forest or the jungle, those city boys wouldn't know an asp from their elbow."
    If you're from another part of the US or from Canada or Australia or just about anywhere where people live near and sometimes go play in woods or open fields or whatever, and off you go. Hillbilly, Yooper, cowboy, any of those can work as your RP background for a ranger.

    I just created my first DnD character. Darvin Evenwood. He’s a Half Elf Ranger. His mother was a Wood Elf, and his father a human. He was raised by his mother until he was 9 years old. She was killed by a band of orcs. The other elves treated Darvin poorly (not intentionally, but elves are just kind of dicks) since he was a half breed. He left the elves at age 10, to find his father. His father was part of a Ranger Tribe (similar to the Dúnedain in Lord of the Rings), and had rose to being Chieftain. Darvin spent the next 11 years learning the ways of the Ranger and the forest from his father and the other Rangers. The Rangers of the Evenwood (the forest they primarily live in) protect the nearby towns and villages from evil creatures. I gave him the Forester Outlander background. I decided against Nobility, since even though he’s the son of the Chieftain, that doesn’t give him special privileges. The Chieftain’s role is more like a sheriff or a military leader, with a little bit of a king thrown it. The laws that govern Ranger conduct are agreed upon by the whole group, with the Chieftain having the deciding vote if a tie occurs. The Chieftain also enforces the laws, and if they are broken, decides the punishment. Then finally, the Chieftain is in charge of assigning where the Rangers patrol, and who has what patrol. The role is not strictly hereditary, it commonly is, unless the child of the current Chieftain does not want the role, then the next most senior Ranger assumes the position.

He fled to the woods at the age of 13 after a band of Orcs killed his family and burned their frontier farmstead. so he made his living off the skills his former fighter father had taught him, hunting and trapping, and the plant and animal skills his probably druid mother taught.
