  • In this one I show you how to create a Cleric for Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition. This is Zamrin Winddriver, a human cleric of the war domain. This one is a little longer than most of my other character creation videos because I tried to do more explanation for newcomers D&D 5E. We'll roll up stats, select a race, class, equipment and even spells. As always, I welcome your questions and comments.

    Making my first character in DnD and found the player’s handbook to be overwhelming and confusing. This video was extremely informative and helpful to better understand the process. Thank you!

    This man, as helpfully as possible: Got the healing capabilities, which it always feels good to help out your brothers and sisters in arms.
    Me, putting together a necromancing, chaotic evil cleric: Huh, interesting.

    CORRECTIONS:
    1) Ignore my note about Cure Wounds at 24:15. This part of the book is just an example of the idea that you can always cast a spell using a spell slot of that level OR ABOVE. So if I'm out of 1st level spell slots, I can always cast a 1st level spell using a 2nd level spell slot if I have any 2nd level spell slots unused.
    2) Cure Wounds is not special. You can actually cast any spell more than once. In other words if I have two 4 first level spell slots, I can cast 4 different 1st level spells from my prepared list, or I can cast one spell twice and another one twice, or for that matter I could cast one spell 4 times! Etc. For more clarity on the rules of magic, check out this video: th-cam.com/video/hTl_4unUc64/w-d-xo.html
    3) Divine Domain spells described at 27:10 DO INDEED need to use a spell slot in order to be cast. They do NOT, however, count against my total prepared spells.

    Cleric is easily the least-utilized class in the game - well, at least in the campaigns I've been involved in. People play them either like glorified medics or tree-hugging warriors when they can be far more valuable than that.

      The modifier is used mainly for spell casting and checks. The mod is taken off your ability score, 8, 9 is a -1, 10, 11 is a +0, 12, 13 is a +1, 14, 15 is a +2, 16, 17 is a +3, 18, 19 is a +4, and 20, the usual cap, is a +5.

  • @VaughanCockell

    Hi, some clarification needed I think regarding Prepared Spells vs Spell Slots. The WIS + Cleric level is regarding prepared spells, those are spells held "in mind" available to cast, and can be changed each long rest. The domain spells are extra spells that are always prepared and do not use up your capacity for preparation (WIS+level).
    Spell slots are used to cast/power the spells and can be used freely between spells known. A 1st level slot can be used to cast any 1st level spell prepared, the spell preparation is never lost, so any 1 spell could be repeatedly cast, not just Cure Wounds. As you said, a higher level spell slot can be used for greater effect.
    Hope this helps people trying to understand spell preparation and casting in 5th edition.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment. Yeah, I think I was pretty clear on that except for the last part - all spells being able to be repeated, not just cure wounds. The PHB (p. 58) says "If you prepare the 1st level spell cure wounds, you can cast it using a 2nd-level slot. Casting the spell doesn't remove it from you list of prepared spells." So is that just a part of the "for example" then? The same principle is true of all spells? If so, that's news to me and I should probably add an annotation :D

    • @VaughanCockell
      @VaughanCockell 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      WASD20 Yeah, the Cure wounds example is talking about spell slot usage not removing spells from "being prepared", and the fact that the spell can be cast using a higher level slot. If you look at the other spell preparing classes (Druid, Paladin, Wizard) they each have a section saying the same thing, and 2 of them also use Cure wounds as the example. The Magic chapter goes over this too, but unfortunately doesn't spell out clearly the fact that any 1 spell could be cast multiple times. This is one of the more notable changes from 3rd edition etc, and I feel should have been laid out more clearly and specifically, possible not using "Cure wounds" as the example, just to drive the point home.
      Domain preparation I felt wasn't fully recognized also, that, these spell "2 per spell level) do not take up your preparation capacity. So for your cleric, at 1st level, would have prepared Divine Favor, Shield of Faith, plus 4 other cleric spells of 1st level. Those four could be changed day by day, but the first two would always be there.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vaughan Cockell Yeah, I figured out the domain spell thing after digging around and asking my gaming group, but I definitely think the multiple uses for all spells thing could be a lot clearer. Anyway, thanks for the clarification! I'll make a note in the video.

    • @VaughanCockell
      @VaughanCockell 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      WASD20 I think what clinches the issue, is that at no point do the rules ever say if a spell is cast, it is lost from the list of prepared spells, as was the case in 3.5 and further back. Indeed, some casting classes could not function if that was the case in 5th edition such as the Ranger from 5th level, where they know only 4 spells but can cast 4 1st level spells and 2 2nd level spells. Spells slots as a separate resource to spells known/prepared, with the ability to multiple cast from prepared spells is the only way the system makes sense.
      Just to lock down the logic of the argument. But yes, it is not well explained in the book. Glad I could help.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Makes sense. I consider it locked down. :) I noticed that that would have been the case with this cleric too if my WIS was only +2 rather than +3. I'd only be able to prepare 5 spells per day, with 6 spell slots.

  • @tefranger

    I like using the human variant race for this class. getting the warcaster feat at 1st lvl is huge. then i emblazon my holy symbol onto my shield. so between the warcaster feat and my shield being my holy symbol, i dont have to drop my equipment to cast most spells in the game. A decent trick my friend showed me a little while back.

    my friends and I are very new to d&d, we've been playing twice a week for two months, and we've only done 3 quests 😂 alot of time was taken because we only have 1 "lightly seasoned" player and he's our dm, and we've been just discovering and organizing our characters, I chose a cleric, and when I leveled up to LV. 2 I chose life domain, I'm aiming for a support cleric, but I do have a pretty OP spell called Inflict wounds that does up to 30 necrotic damage, provided that all saving throws fail and I hit all crits on d10 :p but anyway, I really enjoyed the video, learned some new things about the cleric, and I'll try to implement them during our session tonight, thanks!!

Would it be possible for you to do a video explaining all the feats from the Players' Handbook? You could also give your top recommendations for feats to take if given the opportunity!!

    So if I play a level 1 cleric of the life domain I have cure wounds and bless prepaid automatically, and additionally I can prepare two more spells from the entire list of level 1 cleric spells (total 4) after a long rest?
    And I can cast 2 of those prepared spells - my 2 slots, and I regain the slots after a long rest?
    Just want to check if I've got that right 😉

  • @snatermans

    Domain spells (magic weapon/spiritual weapon @ 27:10) are not spells to cast 1/long rest, but are just sort of extra always prepared spells. witch do cost a slot to cast, right? Nate thank you so much for both doing this video and pointing me in this direction! This definitely helped me understand better about character creation. I created a Knowledge Cleric named Thezanar Uuthrakt alongside watching this video and things made so much sense! I did have a few questions for you...
    First, you mentioned at the beginning that you make most of your characters on the computer, what do you use to make them? I used the fillable pdf provided on the official site, and will probably mostly be using roll20 for all my characters and such, but didn't know if there was something else/better. The one I used on Android seemed good at first, but after understanding more, I think it's a bit off.
    And second, what is the difference between prepared spells and spell slots? For example, at level one the Cleric has 2 level 1 spells, I'm assuming that's Prepared spells", right? What is spell slots?
    Thanks again! This went a long way in helping me understand what I was doing.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jeremy. I use Foxit Reader to edit form fillable PDFs on my PC. Works well.
      For spell slots, I'm going to point you to this video. It should start the video right at the part where I explain that. th-cam.com/video/hTl_4unUc64/w-d-xo.htmlm19s

    The whole spells prepared vs. spell slots vs. domain spells vs. known spells has me confused. I think I may have it, but please correct me if I am wrong:
    I'll use a 1st level Cleric w/ life domain and a +3 Wisdom modifier as an example.
    1) I know (and have prepared) my two domain spells at all times. I can cast them and they do not effect my spells slots for the day. In fact, I can cast them multiple times per day.
    2) I have two spell slots to use for "level spells" period. After I use the two slots, they are gone until I rest.
    3) I can "prepare" a number of spells equal to my level (1) plus my Wisdom modifier (3). So, I can prepare 4 spells (from the entire list of 1st level spells), but I can only cast two of them per day (based on the number of slots I have). I can prepare the same spells, or different spells, after resting.
    4) As a Cleric I "know" all of my 1st level spells, but can only prepare 4 at a time.
    Did I get it right?

    • @marcburbridge19
      @marcburbridge19 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) The domain spells use your spell slots for the day. So if you cast Cure wounds 2 times in a day, you can't cast another 1st level spell that day.

    • @WASD20

      Not quite. You add the appropriate modifier, and if you are proficient you also add the proficiency bonus. You don't multiply anything by 2.

  • @sador42
    @sador42 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question regarding Clerics and a Shield: Is your shield considered to only add to your armor class when you are holding it?
    Where do you put your shield when you are walking around with your Light (2HD) Crossbow?
    When you are using the crossbow at range are you -2 AC that your shield provides because it may be on your back?
    I guess what is the logistics on a shield?

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +sador42 You are correct. You must be wearing it on your arm (no two-handed weapons) to get the +2 bonus.

    • @sador42
      @sador42 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +WASD20 So when I am using my Light Crossbow before I get into Melee I am -2 (no shield bonus) to my AC.
      What actions would you think have to be performed in combat to put the crossbow away and then pull out the Shield and Sword to get into melee and attack?

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually allow a player to drop the crossbow on the ground and pull out the sword and shield, but technically that's not what the rules allow. According to the rules, putting a shield on is an action, I believe. So that means one could drop the crossbow, pull out sword and shield, but would not be able to make an attack after that. Again, that's rules as written, but I play loose with those.

    Ok, following along and making a barbarian instead of a Cleric. So am at Barbarian/Human/Folk Hero/War Domain and i was looking at the barbarian equipment at pg48 and i don't see an option to choose. Can i just pick anything from the armor table at pg145?

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Look under Barbarian class and find the 'Class Features' section. Under that there should be a heading for 'Equipment'. Those give you your choices. I can't remember if Barbarians come with armor, but that should tell you. Many classes don't wear armor and Barbarians actual excel in unarmored defense, if I remember correctly. Don't have my book with me.
      The other option is to forego that standard equipment from class and background and roll for gold using the chart on the first page of ch. 5. Then you shop for your own stuff. :) Good luck.

I have a question about the starter set, specifically the Ability scores and Modifiers for the PreGenerated characters. It seems that they have the values reversed on the sheet. For example, Strength has a plus 2 in the big square and a plus 14 in the small oval bubble. So in this case, the Ability Modifier would be 2??? Any info is appreciated! I am sure it does not matter where we put the values, just as long we know which value is which. I am trying to reverse engineer this character so I can understand a little better how it was put together. Your videos have been huge. I like the campaign episodes with a fist full of dice too. Thanks again for helping everyone get into the realm!!! -Dave

      @WASD20  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well thanks, Dave. My scores are the ones that are backwards, actually, but that's the way I like it so I'm sticking with it! :) I've seen people do them either way. But the official way is to have modifiers in the big box and ability scores in the small oval.

    Question: for the preparing and casting spells it gives an example stating that using cure wounds doesn’t remove it from your prepared lists. Does this mean that your domain spells are free to use without using a spell slot? Likes you can use it as much you want? Or does it take a spell slot to cast it?

      Thanks for that. I actually have a note on the Domain Spells bit to correct that, but unfortunately TH-cam doesn't show annotations on mobile views. In terms of the Cure Wounds thing, I'm not sure what I was talking about there. :) Maybe I was remembering something from Pathfinder.

    What if I roll like all ones or twos) I mean horrible results. Am I allowed to reroll some results? Or all of them. I didn't find that information in the rulebook.
    P.S. By the way thanks a lot for you videos and replies to my questions, it helped a lot. I am now almost ready to run the starter adventure with my friends. The biggest problem is that d&d books are not published in my country so I have to translate pretty big part of adventure text and rules, so all of my friends will understand it.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TonyPizzaPie Technically you probably shouldn't re-roll, but I would say you could ask your DM and they might throw you a bone and let you re-roll a couple or just add a couple points to a couple abilities. It's nice to roll up characters as a group for this reason. The DM can observe and make calls on that sorta thing. Or if it's a concern, simply taking the 'standard array' as described in the book is a great way to determine ability scores. I've used it quite a bit in the past.
      That's tough that the books aren't in your language, man. What country are you in? Don't be afraid to wing it on some of the rules here and there. As long as your are fairly consistent and everyone is having fun, that's what matters! Happy gaming!

    I just had a quick question: when determining the damage of your weapons, you add your ATK bonus and weapon damage, right? Doesn't that mean that (for your warhammer) your strength bonus gets added in to the mix twice since you add STR bonus and PROF bonus to get ATK and you add STR bonus to damage?

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Attack bonus and damage bonus are separate things. You don't add your attack bonus to your damage.
      The attack roll determines IF you hit, and the bonus should be your proficiency bonus plus your relevant ability modifier (STR in this case).
      The damage is what you roll WHEN you hit. The damage bonus is nearly always smaller than the attack bonus because it doesn't include your proficiency bonus, only your ability modifier.

      +eon star Try again, but don't show them the rulebook. Try the starter set (amzn.to/1LHKj7H) or get the free PDFs if you haven't already and become familiar enough with the basic rules that the players can tell you what they want to do, and then you can tell them what they have to roll to do it. That's a challenge, but hopefully they'll enjoy it enough eventually that they might WANT to read some of the rules :) Good luck.

    So lemme get this straight.... The book says you choose a number of spells from the cleric spell list equal to your WIS modifier + your cleric level... the cleric spell list? Does that mean I can just choose any spell (taking into account spell level) from the list? or is there some way to determine my known spells??

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      So for a cleric, your known spells are ANY on the cleric list. Some may not fit well with your cleric's domain. It's hard to see a cleric of life who serves a good deity, for example, casting a necromancy spell (which are on the cleric spell list). But other than those cases, you may choose any. Each day after 1 hour of prayer/meditation the cleric can select any spells from the cleric list that fit their level.

Also i hate it when they use the word Nerd as a bad thing. Any tips on trying to get my friends to play with me?

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      SpacePip That's tough, man. Keep trying. Bribe them with free pizza or something :) But also realize its not for everyone, so don't push too hard. For me, getting into this hobby I just had to make new friends. Some of my friends have been willing to give it a shot and we've had an okay time. But their level of interest is way below mine, so I've gone out and made friends online and I game with them, engage in good discussions with them and they are genuinely some of my best friends. A year ago I hardly knew them.
      A few weeks back I showed my wife an episode of Titansgrave (Wil Wheaton's rpg show). For her that was significant because these are good-looking successful people who enjoy RPGs and have a good time 'playing make-believe'. Maybe it's dumb that it took that to change her view, but hey, I'll take it :)

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      SpacePip Also - that "old" mindset sucks. Might be time for new friends anyway :)
      Oh, also look up Vin Diesel D&D. Dude is a huge d&d nerd. Again - stupid that we have to show supposedly 'cool' people enjoying this hobby to convince some, but might be worth a shot.

    I have no experience with D&D (or RPGs), but I take it this Cleric is pretty strong, right? What if you are plaving with a group where the other players have moderate or unlucky rolls? Is it still fun for them, or would your character do everything?
    Also, is it more fun to play a character with everything at 12+ or would you rather play one with everything

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jallallalla The cleric is a good class, but I can't really say its much stronger than other classes. I think they are pretty well balanced. For people who feel like they want to 'win' unlucky rolls can ruin a game, but if you are in it for the fun of collaborative storytelling, low stats and unlucky rolls get in the way of fun a lot less. It can still be frustrating though :)

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      AvidNightmareFan My recommendation would be to talk to the DM. He/she might have a good suggestion for a deity, and sometimes they may even have custom deities for their world or you could create your own. :) But for your domain you would probably go with life domain (big heals) and then you just want to find a deity that aligns with life domain in the back of the Player's Handbook. For alignment try to find one that is chaotic good, chaotic neutral, neutral good or just straight up neutral. Or change your alignment to get a little closer to your desired deity if you want to. Hope that helps. Also, if you don't have a PHB just search for D&D deities on the googles :)
