    Learn how, when and where to look for seashells & train your eyes how to find/spot/discover sea shells/shark teeth/fossils in the sand along tide wrack lines. Common beach treasures found beachcombing, sea shelling & exploring along the Lowcountry Ace Basin Beaufort, South Carolina coastline include whelk (knobbed/knobby, channeled, kiener, pear), lettered olive (SC state shell), shark eye moon snails, angel wing shells, clams (Quahog, Venus, jackknife, razor, imperial), blue mussels, lucines, murex (giant eastern, lace, apple), sea urchin, sand dollars, seastar/starfish, tulip (banded & true) auger, baby's ear, coral frags, jingle, slipper, drill, periwinkle, egg casings, horseshoe crab shells, sea sponges & seawhips. Our favorite rare beach finds include Indian artifacts, vertebrae, giant tun shell, mermaid purse, fossil shells & antique bottles! Along our virtual beach walks, we encounter living sea creatures, including hermit crabs in the tide pools. We have a huge seashell collection. We give away a lot of beach treasures via channel giveaways & to our Patreon Patrons as our appreciation!
    Crabbing tips & tricks: how to/what to use to bait & catch blue crab with crab pots/traps or baskets; how to measure blue crab/stone crab claws; how to clean/cook crabs; how to determine sex/maturity of blue crabs; regulations & requirements for crabbing in SC.
    Inshore & offshore/deep sea fishing adventures: learn how to fish Carolina rigs using mud minnows, shrimp, squid or fiddler crabs catching spottail bass (bull redfish/red drum), spotted sea trout, sheepshead, flounder (gigging too), triggerfish, snapper, grouper, mackeral, bluefish, black drum, black sea bass, whiting, cobia, shark & more!
    Shrimp trawling: how to shrimp dragging a 25 ft trawl net with our small 17 ft boat; checking our nets; showing/sorting our catch; throwing back bycatch (squid, bait fish, skates/rays). Watch as dolphin & shorebirds (gulls, terns, pelicans) follow shrimp boats to catch a meal.
    Thank you for joining along for the virtual adventure!

    Thank you for your video. I enjoy walking beaches myself and collecting. The casing looks like a 50 cal and the 43 typically is the year it is manufactured. I have several large casings from my grandfather's ship that he captained during WWII. They are stamped 42 and 43. Thank you I do appreciate the hard work that you put into your videos.

    As a child I was fond of mainly gastropods, and of course the big species, as I had only seen them as drawings in books but never for real (such as the Hamlyn Guide). Later in life I grew to appreciate bivalves more and more, and collected a very large Arcidae collection, comprising well over 1000 specimens with numerous species, also fossil ones. All doublets.
    And big shells... On your video I see large Anadara brasiliana on the beach. That species does not reach 3 inches... or does it? A specimen of that size would be a super giant. Love those bivalves there on the beach.

    • @SaltyReflections
      @SaltyReflections  ปีที่แล้ว

      Those big shells are hard not to love! I like to find the bi-valve pairs too! Wow! I bet your collection was AMAZING! I don't know them by their scientific names, but after looking it up, I don't think I have seen that species of ark that large, no. I'll be on the lookout now to see what are the biggest we see. Interesting! Thanks for coming along shelling with us! 🌊👣🐚

    Oh my goodness the mericks is so amazingly awsome. The welcks are so beautiful. I love a beach day I dont get very many beach days because my husband will burn in a heartbeat. We live an hour from Saint Jo MI. We go for the art shows and to see the sunsets but no oceans near us. We live in Indiana. So no shelling for us but I would shell as often as I could. Love those giant murex shells! Maybe just try bleach to clean them up a little. I would be afraid the acid would eat them up. If you do clean them, please give us another peek at them after. Boy I bet you slept good that night. Any time out in the fresh air and sunshine does that to me.

    Those giant murex shells are unmistakable, even from a distance! I did soak mine in straight bleach because it had soaked in some dark dirt/minerals. Like yours, it was an older shell that had been degraded a bit by age and a boring sponge--kind of looked a little like cement. Normally I soak my knobbed whelk shells for 24 hours, but because I was so nervous about the murex, I checked on it about every couple hours, and removed it probably after 8. ...just in case you want to clean yours. Anyway, you have quite a beach there! Your knobbed whelks are much pointier than I see them here in FL. The ones I find have likely been rolling around longer! Yours are very pretty! Thanks for the videos!

    A long time ago I tried using muratic acid and it ate through the shells. They weren't in it very long. Don't use it anymore. Just use a toothbrush and a little dish detergent. I used a liquid wax to shine them up. Worked very well. Have you ever found a shell that has grown different? Guess they call them Freaks. I don't like that term. I have found about 6 shells that grown differently. Really like them!

    • @SaltyReflections
      @SaltyReflections  ปีที่แล้ว

      We have found a few anomalies. I have heard that about the acid. 😵 It makes me nervous, especially since I don't usually do anything other than leave them natural. 😬🫣

    At 3:30 some nice Busycon carica indeed, nice orange aperture. Known since the late Pliocene in SC and NC. Maybe also fossils wash up on the shore as well. i would refrain from using the acid, but that is only my choice. It is not so good for the shell surface texture. At 9:00 a whelk with corals on it... are there such corals today? or could those be from an ancient reef long gone (Pleistocene, Pliocene?)

    • @SaltyReflections
      @SaltyReflections  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, wasn't it a beauty!? I love those orange apertures. 🧡🐚 We have thought of using acid on some to see the results, but I haven't yet for the fear that it will damage them. 😬🫣 So we just leave them natural. We find this type of coral here regularly, but I'm not sure really how old it would be or how to tell. Thanks for coming along for the adventure & for sharing your knowledge!

    How long does it take for the spikes to fall off of the sea urchins? I found one the other day !

    • @SaltyReflections
      @SaltyReflections  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome! Once it is dried out, the spines will come off fairly easily with very light pressure if you wish to remove them.
