What do I do with all my seashells? Let's find out!

  • Every week I get the question - what do I do with all my seashells? Turns out I keep some of the shells, I put some shells to the side (I've got BIG plans!) and the rest I sell. I have tried to sell shells a few different ways, but I just don't have the time to customize orders so this is the next best thing I can come up with. I'd really like to specialize in shell mirrors - or at least find that one special something but until I figure that out, I'll sell collections and candles and different assortments of shells on Etsy!

    I lived in an RV and traveled with my partner for 10 years. I love all my shells and couldn't bear to part with any. I have them in various thrift glass pieces too. I especially love the teeny tiny ones that are so perfect. It's hard to imagine that they survive washing up on the beach. Thanks for sharing.

      Oh my gosh those 10 years must have been magical! And you obviously "get it" with the shells. Some of them are so extraordinarily beautiful. Amazing what nature can create.

    I had assumed that you sold all/most of the shells you picked up. But I love seeing how much you clearly enjoy just being surrounded by their beauty, in all their forms. Thank you for sharing your passion with us. I am a newbie at this but I'd like to immortalize my mother's collection over her many years (mostly Florida, Miam, and perhaps Cuba, Bermuda, etc.).
      Has anyone had experience with encasing them in clear epoxy? Right now, they are in clear plastic containers (mostly), so the shells are not exactly reflecting their natural beauty.
      I also have mini spoon collection, which I inherited from my mother and Bermuda sand (I spend a year there), which can be added to the mix. Any advice is welcomed!
      Thanks in advance!
      Rene🙏

    Your organization of your shell collection is admirable. When we started collecting shells on our visits to various Florida beaches we would use any glass container we had. We would include a note telling which beach the shells came from and the date we were there. Then when we started visiting Sanibel and the beaches between St Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach we started using candle jars, like the Yankee Candle large jars and 3 wick jars. We now have close to 20 candle jars and about 8 other glass containers (including an old milk bottle) full of shells, as well as a display on a hutch in our family room. Displaying shells in glass containers allows us to see and reminisce our trips to the beaches and the gifts from the sea.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've reused some of those candle holders too - the lids are handy as you don't have to dust the shells off again!

    Collection, obsession 😍. Please restrain from taking the conk shells from the waters. When one animal outgrows his shell, it becomes a home to the next, smaller conk. These shells are often protected by government. The Bahamas will not let you leave their islands with them. You have worked so very hard and enjoy the beaches, maybe you could share some of your time and love ❤️ for the area you live in working with educational programs for children and tourists. Born in Florida, we always say take a few fo memories, leave the rest.

    I have learned a lot watching your walks on the beach. When I was a child we lived in Hawaii. I did not pay much attention to the seashells because I was in a hurry doing all the things little kids do. I live in an electric wheelchair now and beaches are not very accessible to me. So I anxiously look forward to our next walk on the beach.

    Hi! A friend and I made it to Turner beach Friday morning at sunrise. The waves were good size and they were bringing in shells like crazy. I stayed next to the jetty the whole time and let the ocean bring me shells. I ended up with a half dozen whole flats, the same number of alphabet cones, along with 2 nice junonia pieces and …. A Junonia!! I’m still in shock! It’s 3 inches long and the aperture is almost perfect. The only thing missing is the very tip of the tip. Thank you for all your videos and information. Plus I have helped many others learn about shells because of your great tutorials. 😎🐬🌴

    I got my things from SWFL shell guide i just love it thank u so much. I do all kinds of seashell crafts and do craft shows. My daughter is going to Marco island in May for my grandsons graduation where is the best beach for shelling that time of year. That is all he wants to do. He lost his father right before xmas so this will be bitter sweet without him

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am so sorry for your loss 🥲
      In my experience the best shelling is at the very South end of the island. I would normally try Tigertail too but I've heard the dredging is covering up all the shells. If the tide is low enough, you can scoot around the jetty and shell literally at the very southern tip of Marco Island.

    I save condiment jars. I will use them for shells and decorate the lids with shells, rope sailor knot work or other things like make a cork stopper. I also make shell balls. Husband has a glass engraver and I hope to engrave containers (like your tower containers) with the name of the shell type and fill them with 1 shell type. Someday I hope to meet you on a shelling tour in SF FL since I also live here. 🥰❤
