  • Thanks to the Covid-19 lockdown, I have finally been able to post an update to the black smoke problem that has plagued (sorry, poor choice of word in the current climate) my 2006 Range Rover Sport.
    In 2015, I posted a video on how to check your TDV6 turbo actuator. Here is the link for that. • How to Check Your Turb...
    In this video, I will show you how I cured the black smoke problem.
    Hope this helps!

    Thanks! Range rover mechanics don't miss you when they diagnose or fix anything 😅 Appreciate your vids.

    Always check your inlet manifolds for cracks! It’s so common on the 2.7 & 3.0! I have just changed both inlet manifolds on my RRS 2012 3.0sdv6. My god it runs beautifully!. It’s also worth checking your Throttle body! Again these can get very sticky and would cause a few problems on power out put, lag!

    Is it normal for black smoke to come out only on full throttel

    I hope you can help me with this I was driven my car this morning and I’ve noticed loads of black smoke coming out only when I press my foot on the exilator to go faster and loads of black smoke comes out only when I press hard on the exilator other wise no smoke when I’m driven normal . Do you know what this could be . Thanks

    This has to be the oil intercooler correct? Because I don't think it would make sense if this was the coolant intercooler, where oil is present.

      Hi, no, it's the turbo intercooler. The air circulating around the diesel engine contains oil mist and this was forming around the hole in the intercooler. At one stage I pulled apart the air intake pipes at the top of the engine and the amount of oily black sludge was incredible.

      @@Iguana6767 And the oil buildup was due to a leak within the turbos causing the oil to bypass it and leak into intercooler correct?

      @@reeseboi8704 I'm not a mechanic but yes a worn turbo could be a cause but I understand it's more likely to be oil fumes in the crankcase ventilation system, emissions controls like egr valves etc. Have a look at this article www.pickardsautomotive.com.au/pickards-blog/land-rover-and-jaguar-tdv6-induction-cleaning-and-maintenance

      @@Iguana6767 Okay thanks! So in that case just to clarify there should be absolutely zero oil residue within the intercooler and the moment you find even the slightest amount in there, then something is wrong

      @Iguana6767  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@reeseboi8704 It is quite normal to have oil residue in the intercooler circuit. Have a look at 0:19 in the video and you'll see what the turbo hose looked like at the turbo inlet. The hose clamp wasn't super tight and that oily mist gets out and builds up. That wasn't the cause of my black smoke and power loss though.

    Replace the intercooler before it wrecks your turbo.

    I have a similar issue. (3.6 TDV8).
    Black diesel soot when accelerating hard. 3 garages say there isn't a fault but, I think there is.
    Maybe it's worth putting the car on ramps, grabbing a torch and just spending 20 minutes looking at everything in the engine bay.

      Check both of your air intake hoses at the front top of your engine for and splits. Mine had a small tear underneath one hose which caused exactly what you are explaining. Cheap and easy fix if it is this. Worth a look
