      These gearboxes don’t really go wrong but do eat torque converters like like the TD6 did as the engine is too powerful for the torque converter!
      You can buy reconditioned torque converters with reinforced plates for £320 which would have been a relatively cheap fix!!!

    Love your channel because you show just how hard it can be to repair cars on your own without all the specialist tools and equipment. Hope your channel grows to the point where you can do it full-time.

    • @JamesChurchill3
      @JamesChurchill3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The specialist tools are becoming a plague, not necessarily physical tools as there's often a way of bodging something together to do what you need, but the scan tools and flashing tools are nigh impossible to buy unless you work for an authorised dealership. We really need some kind of right to repair bill, I'd be happy to purchase the software needed from a manufacturer if it was available.

    @PatrickBaptist 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    @17:30 Yeah I put a trans in my 03 disco and it's pretty much like that, it will NOT shift on it;s own at all though, it has to be manually shifted through all the gears and basically goes to N when you left off the go pedal, but if I put it into a lower gear it will do engine braking then.
    I smoked the trans in it earlier by flat towing it, I meant to have put the transfer case into N but I was tired and groggy and put it into L so once I got up to highway speeds it was smoking like crazy. It did have enough left in it to drive around the yard to where I fixed it under its own power though lol. land rovers are junk but I do like the way the disco II drives off road, way better than the murikan junk, but keeping it together is pathetic.
    But now that I put the cheapest trans I could find on ebay it doesn't smoke, but ugg what I had to do to the cooling lines I do drip a little.
    @21:00 SAY WHUT, a land rover without any codes, that's not possible mate, it's lying lol.
    @23:10 Well the thing is they will invest time and labor diagnosing your vehicle so it would be like asking someone to work for free to expect them to tell you what's wrong with it without a diag fee, transmissions are specially time consuming. I am a mechanic as a side gig, I hate when people expect me to tell them whats wrong with something but don't care they take time away from my family and not even pay me so I can put food on the table. Half people when you do that will just not have it fixed, then the mechanic is out of time that they could have been using on a paying customer. Some things I have no problem diagnosing for free, I just tell them it's a very shallow judgement call because I won't spend more than 10-15 looking at and considering, if they want me to research their problem that too costs. I agree most shops charge high prices, that's why I NEVER take my junk to anyone else, other than for tires.
    The other thing I do is sure I'll diag you car but if you don't want it fixed the parts just get dumped into the seats/trunk and if it's not collected in 2 days then storage fees will accrue.
    I like your video though, land rovers are finical viable, eventually mine will get a engine and trans swap from something more worthy and peppy.
    Up to 2004 land rover was using a GM designed engine for their rovers that was dreamed up in the 30s or 40s, they must have been the last company to stop using push rod engines lol, those top hat alumn engines are such junk and impossible to stop leaking the front cover has to goto a machine shop to fix where the crank comes through and seals against the shaft of the harmonic balancer/crank pulley.
    I do have videos about replacing the transmission if anyone reading needs help, removal and install.

    This is normal RR ownership. I bought a range Rover classic. It only needed 4 new doors, a rebuild engine a freshly welded subframe, new tailgate new steering rack and some other bits. And after it was done it only left me stranded 5 times in one year.

    • @kay110
      @kay110 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I bought a brand new classic in 1994 (Facelift model)... It spent the first 12months of its life with repairs (under warranty thank goodness) to every parts of the car including bodywork leaks when it rained. Every part of the car had a problem - engine, gearbox, fuel, bodywork and even the carpets were replaced.

  • @JM-yd9sm
    @JM-yd9sm 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +39

    My theory on Range Rover ownership is that everyone that buys a ‘cheap’ one ends up spending about 2 grand or more on it in repairs and then they pass it on to the next owner who does exactly the same! The amazing thing is that they go wrong so often it’s like a bottomless pit. It only stops when someone scraps them.

    • @bellemorelock4924
      @bellemorelock4924 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      please dont hate me but as an engr, I know that designs (whole cars) are either solid, or have distinct weak spots.
      here the torque converter seems to be a known weak spot. and it will cost loads to swap, plus a tranny if you kill it too.
      Example: on my personal vehicle the voltage regulator was a weak spot, gets too hot, because the alternator is too small and its exposed too much. when it goes it can take down anything electric on the truck. solution is to swap a larger alternator. Fix any inherited issues and from there, you're fine.
      in general, the lower the production number, or higher the price of the car, the more likely there are these design gremlins. I don't have a RR but based on this video I would not trust this model. You never know if you buy a new car.
      In USA we have two kinds of locations, SALTED ROADS and seldom salted/unsalted roads. People who live in the RUSTY salted areas assume nothing lasts 15 years, and it flavors their entire perspective. In other areas cars can last as long as you maintain them. When you get into a chat with anyone here, its worth asking about the road salt to find out. Canada is 100% salted. If someone considers all cars "dead in 15 years" then they will talk nice about cars with problems like this RR more often.

    Break drag whilst driving with obvious strong smell will be responsible for not being able to let the gearbox change gears. Furthermore, ODO reading 117k miles (just under 200k) shows POOR maintenance in general. The wear and tear factor is unavoidable when it comes to this milage. Good lessons learnt here. If ever buying a second hand car, it is preferable to seek one with a stamped service book history, Never listen to someone who tells you 'this car has only been driven (old lady) to church on Sundays' Speedo's are often wound back by shonky car yard dealers. I've seen it all over a period of 50 years working as a mechanic. ,nothings changed.

    A little tip for filling gearboxes, diffs etc, is to use a long hose with a funnel on the end. Then you can stand upright and fill. It does give a little spill when the gearbox is full and the hose still have oil in it, but a tray under the car will sort that out. I always do that on my Land Rovers. No pumping and lying on your back. :)

  • @janniss6401
    @janniss6401 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +51

    Here's my two cents on the ZF 6HP:
    They're not bad gearboxes, however there are some more or less common failures that can happen.
    - The Torque Converters can rarely go bad. That doesn't usually prevent it from shifting though. Usually it's just the Torque converter Clutch that fails, which will cause the RPMs to fluctuate, while going at a constant speed.
    - There's some seals between the mechatronics and the main gearbox, that shrink over time. This can cause the box to have less than ideal oil pressure and will at the very least cause harsher shifts. If you leave that for too long, there's a possibility of burnt clutches. Also, there is a sealing-plate between the two halves of the mechatronics that can cause the same issues. Replacing these seals is comparatively cheap preventative maintenance, that I always recommend on these Transmissions
    - There are brass bushings on the shafts inside the transmission. These seal the oil supply to the clutches and especially the ones for clutch E (I think) like to wear out, causing low Oil Pressure to that clutch. This Mainly affects 3 to 4 shifting in the beginning and will cause the gearbox to go into limp mode once it can't adapt to the loss of pressure anymore. If this happens a complete rebuild is needed (This is also my theory, as to what happened here)
    By the way, You can swap over the Gearbox ECU (located on top of the mechatronics) in order to circumvent having to program the new box.

      @@NotEconomicallyViable Just as a follow up, if you're interested, Sreten over at M539 Restorations did a full mechatronics service on his E70's 6HP. One of the commenters is apparently a ZF tech and said it was a textbook example of how to do the service. Also of note, if you end up with an 8HP in any vehicle... you may not be able to play swapsies so I would recommend a textbook service on it if it's high mileage. My 8HP failed catastrophically at around 275,000 km due to water ingress destroying the seals (never did figure it out so now it has a separate trans cooler because not worth the risk) and it cost $13k to rebuild fully as I said in my other comment.

    There is a hidden factory reset for your car's gearbox software , I have used it , it actually does work . I stumbled on it from a retired factory development engineer who was helping someone out on a forum . There are many resets that you can do from the car without having to try fix it yourself , if you are a long time L322 owner , you may know some of them

      @@Zandoerlenaar Even the most problematic model can have the occasional reliable example but the occasional unicorn doesn't represent the ownership experience of the majority.
      JLR vehicles are very well known for being exceptionally unreliable and expensive to maintain and repair and that reputation came about because of the ownership experience of the majority.
      The chairman of JLR admitted in a speech that the company loses approximately 100,000 sales per year because of its reputation for poor quality and the biggest reason the owner's state for leaving the brand marque is unreliability.

    • @NotEconomicallyViable
      @NotEconomicallyViable  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

      I think Harry Metcalfe has owned his from new, and he has the resources to keep it well maintained. I fully believe that so many of these cars end up in a terrible state because they start dropping in value to the point where 'ordinary' people can afford to buy one. What these people don't take into account is the massive running costs, meaning they skimp and save on the maintenance and that's how so many end up in a terrible state.

    • @williamegler8771
      @williamegler8771 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @NotEconomicallyViable That may be partially responsible for their unfavorable reputation but they are also well known to suffer from minor niggles to catastrophic failures even when relatively new and still under warranty.
      Any modern vehicle shouldn't need to be treated like a Faberge egg either.
      Following the manufacturer's service schedule should result in a relatively trouble-free vehicle for at least 150,000 miles if not more.
