  • Like many, I heard a movie with Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy and a bunch of other talented actors was coming to Netflix and got excited. Then I saw the trailer and it wasn't the greatest trailer, but I was still excited to see it. Then I actually saw it and boy was I disappointed. This was a movie that had tons of potential, but lets dig a little deeper into why I think You People Doesn't Work.
    ******
    Movie: You People. 2023. Netflix
    Director: Kenya Barris
    Writer(s): Kenya Barris, Jonah Hill
    Starring: Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy, Lauren London, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Nia Long and David Duchovny

    Music Used: Summer In The Neighborhoods - Smith The Mister
    Charlie Brown - Smith The Mister

    Just shows how a deep cast can be completely stranded by a poor script or premise

    Yay, you’re back! I tried watching this film, and I couldn’t watch it in its entirety. I never been a fan of Kenya Barris or his writing. But I would admit that I did like Grown-Ish because I could relate (coming from a person who went to a PWI).
    Taking discourse from Twitter especially Black Twitter doesn’t translate well on script. It comes off as cringe. Kenya Barris to me is a one trick pony. His experience is only of that from the people he surrounds with, not talking about Black people as a whole (we’re not a monolith). I felt bad for Nia Long and Eddie Murphy because two talented actors didn’t deserve to be in this movie.
    The movies that have encapsulated interracial relationships well is Guess Who with Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher and Mississippi Masala with Denzel.

      Hey! I graduate school in May this year so I am HOPING that will free up some time to get more content out for yall.
      But I agree with all of what you said here. I think Blackish was okay, but not so much because of him. I think Anthony Anderson, Tracie Ellis Ross and the cast carried that show, but if were being real, it was successful because it was a safe sitcom for all people. I haven't seen Grown-Ish yet, but everything else he's done has been trash and this movie is basically no different. He definitely seems to struggle writing material for black characters. I felt bad for Eddie Murphy and Nia Long as well. I felt bad for everyone who didn't write this honestly lol. You can definitely tell it gained popularity only because of the big names attached to it.
      Guess Who was the film people were linking this movie too, but Guess Who was actually funny and had an entertaining story. This lacked in both of those areas. The Original Guess Who's coming to dinner was a pretty good film too and an important one. Mississippi Masala was a great movie too, one of Denzel's best.

    This is a really great commentary, and I enjoy hearing some other perspectives on it. As a white person, I was a little hesitant to form my opinion strongly on the movie because there's a lot of cultural things I don't know about and I wasn't sure if my opinions would be grounded. But I agree with almost everything you said, especially your comment on how in a lot of poorly written movies, "if you're white you're dumb and if you're black you're an a**hole." I was afraid to say it, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. I think it's a shame, because movies with messages like this are important, that we should all learn to understand eachother--but neither black nor white people will watch this movie and feel inclined to sympathize with dumb*sses and a**holes 😂 such a disservice to a good intention.

      White people typically know more, because they care more, about other cultures. Sure the Ithaquans know more about their own culture, but do they know much about anyone else's?

    • @itakeonmovies
      @itakeonmovies  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand this. Being critical of things centered around cultures were unfamiliar with can be a slippery slope to walk so I do appreciate your willingness to be respectful. More of us should look to move with that candor. However, a bad film with asshole character's is just a bad film with a-hole characters and you pointing that out wouldn't have been disrespectful at all.
      To your second point. I wish this was a film that dug deeper into the cultures or had anything resembling a message because we all could've been educated, but I'm willing to bet you left the film just as empty handed as I did. 🤣
      Thank you for sharing! 🙌🏾

    Like you I was enthusisatic to see these actors all together like this. It seems like a dream cast, except I've never been a fan of Barris (I've never finished a single show he's ever made) so I opted out of watching this. I'm glad to get your take on it though. Coming up in a little while is the remake of White Men Can't Jump and I while I liked the original just okay, I think I'm gonna skip this remake, but I'd love to hear your take on it if you wish to subject yourself to it.

    • @itakeonmovies
      @itakeonmovies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I haven't finished a single show either. While Black-Ish was tolerable from what I have seen, it's nothing i'd be upset never seeing again. This will probably never get a re-watch though. It was pretty agonizing to sit through lol.
      I will be watching the new White Men Cant Jump and will definitely share my thoughts on it. I was worried about it still looks kind of dumb, but also like it could be a good time. I'll give it a shot. ✊🏾

    I felt they were trying to capitalize off the ideas that Kanye’s rants and Kyrie’s link post recently made popular. The movie was coo. It seemed intentionally cringe but yea it’s underwhelming, not as funny as it could be. I’m not a big movie person so I didn’t think to much about it. Interesting to hear actual movie watchers didn’t enjoy it as much either.

    • @itakeonmovies
      @itakeonmovies  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Whether we agree or not with Kanye or the documentary Kyrie posted, I do think that they are actually conceptualizing some type of philosophical thought open for debate. I just felt like this movie took those two opposing cultural ideologies and didn't even attempt to ask why they oppose each other or how you navigate that situation. It just felt very, "hey they're Jewish and hey they're Muslim and that's funny". I guess it largely would've been the same movie without them even bringing the cultures into it. The most disappointing aspect though for me was just that it wasn't as funny as I had hoped for, but I definitely didn't hate it like some did. ✊🏾

    It'd be depressing enough if this movie was about two people in their twenties, but this was about two thirty-eight year olds who essentially needed their mommy and daddy's permission to get married. Plus, the lead character breaks up with her fiance because...his mom was cringey? As though it was his fault. Upper middle-class L.A. must be even more insufferable and infantilized than anybody could have imagined if the writers thought this was reasonable.

    • @itakeonmovies
      @itakeonmovies  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a good point. I honestly couldn't even remember how old there characters were supposed to be. If they were indeed that old it does make things slightly worse.

  • @theresaivy7045
    @theresaivy7045 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yep, yep, yep and yep. I avoided watching this film for a while because I knew it was not going to be good. All that talent flushed down the crapper. Why? How? Clearly it wasn't because they were trying not to offend anyone because I was offended that the time I wasted watching this movie (it doesn't deserve to be called a film) could have been better spent cleaning my house. I cringed my way through the whole thing. I did however enjoy Jonah Hill's best friend. She seem to me to be the only character worth paying attention to. Every stereotype in the book was thrown into this stew. I wish I had some stew to throw back at it. I commented before I finished watching the video because you were so dead on I had to acknowledge.

    • @itakeonmovies
      @itakeonmovies  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I agree. I can't say I downright hated it, but forsure felt line it was a lost opportunity. All that talent, should've produced a way better product. And yeah it was ome big stereotype stew, thats a great analogy. Jonah Hills friend was tolerable for the most part I agree.

    This was so disappointing. There is barely any Muslim representation and for them to screw it up this bad, and seeming like they don't know anything about the culture or religion, is just so baffling. as a jewish woman, i hatedddd how my community was represented and also felt the representation of black muslims was super offensive as well. why were we made out to be exactly like every stereotype. and white? most jews aren’t white. just such a tone deaf and cringey movie altogether. not a fan at all.

    • @itakeonmovies
      @itakeonmovies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I can definitely see how it would be offensive to some. I largely just found it ignorant and unoriginal. But my guess as to why comes down to two things. 1. They genuinely thought the material was funny. 2. They aren't good writers. In this case I think both things are true.

  • @michaelreppenhagen736
    @michaelreppenhagen736 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree with a ton of your comments but will add that this film is kind of bogged down by how Eddie Murphy's character is right a lot about Jonah Hill's. Like, Jonah Hill keeps saying "the culture" when he means "Black culture" and Eddie Murphy pointing it out is just completely ignored and not a throughline of the film. When Eddie Murphy's character tags along for the bachelor party, it's pretty obvious Jonah Hill's character would have been a total fuckboi had Murphy's character not tagged along, making the rehearsal dinner scene make sense.
    It seems like the writers thought the audience would respond with the same cringe they did to JLD's character but the two were not at all on the same level at all.

    • @itakeonmovies
      @itakeonmovies  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a great point. All that told me was the writers had no problem with him referring to "the culture" when in reality it may be off-putting to some. I guess it would be worse if he was saying "our culture", but was definitely an idea they didn't dig too deep into. So it just adds to the list of things they've just failed to talk about.
