Hi AuziahTV, just found your channel, subbed! So far, really like your feedback in the reviewing context.
Since you asked, please review these films:
      #MedicatingtheNormal
      #MedicineforMelancholy
      #Mahogany
#PipeDreams... the Sole movie legendary singer Gladys Knight played/starred in! 1976, yours' is not the channel that can speak on such... but study the name of this film... then study closely the end of this movie... note: Ms. Knight holds a natural womb & a surplus of *Melanin* & she's a #Gemini sun sign... if your Mercury is Retrograde in your natal chart, *it* may d a w n on you *what* 'That' ritual or seemingly a *ritual* was near the end of that film. But did Mama Gladys *know* back then. She never did another movie, hm... let me look up BH's sun sign... okay, one line shows a #Leo b-day, the other, a #Libra b-day. Nevertheless, I think we'd luv *your take* on this film.
Any of the legend's #PamGrier's films! Especially that one where that Karen went to pull her Hair! Got a Rude Awakening!
Wait a minute, do you only prefer to review new films?

It was clear that there was an understanding there would be limited demonstrated physical intimacy between Lauren and Jonah, because when it occurred, it was cringy.
The injections of Nipsey based references (the store, the street, the billboard, the music) were also a bit strained. Apparently no one is supposed to say that out of respect for his amazing memory but it truly had no real place in the storyline other than who Lauren was in real life to that amazing artiste. The story however was not about her reality, it was about a character she played. It wasn't even subtle ( like when Chadwick's initials and last name was placed on the train in "The Harder They Fall"). No one is saying honouring his memory should not be done, it just was too overt for what this movie was supposed to be about and mean.
Also, one would be hard pressed to see a Jewish son be that disrespectful of his mother on a consistent basis. Not only black ppl were caricatures in this movie, the Jewish characters were as well.
The treatment of the Nation of Islam is borderline disrespectful. Represented by a cussin' closed minded man who was willing to sabotage another man's character for selfish means. That was not comedy. It was unnecessary.
Lauren's brother in the film had no dimension, neither do her friends.
The director cuts, angles and overlays were also quite distracting and did not add to the tone of the show.
It was a miss, and adding strong and respected actors/ actresses into the mix could not salvage the fact that the movie was a dud overall.
    Unfortunate but true.

    • @Auziahtv
      @Auziahtv  ปีที่แล้ว +17

Honestly, as a writer I would have entirely reworked the script/ plot once I would have seen the lack of chemistry between Lauren and Jonah. When watching a movie you’re supposed to get lost in it, and not be constantly reminded that you’re watching an actor portray a character. For instance, the placement of Nipsey Hussle and his Marathon store felt completely forced and irrelevant to the main plot. It was like the writers were constantly trying to remind us that Lauren is black and Jonah is Jewish. I think the first part of the movie felt promising, because of established character relationships and dynamics between Jonah’s character and his lack of significance with his Jewish culture. Moreover, with Lauren I didn’t grasp the point of her random Muslim background and why they felt it was important to remind the audience that she was Muslim? It felt disrespectful to Muslim’s because it seemed like they were making fun of her dad’s (Eddie Murphy) religion- being that he was only Muslim when it felt convenient for him.
Lastly, if I could’ve had a hand in the script I would have entirely scrapped some of the scenes. Due to the constant scene changes it didn’t allow proper storytelling, therefore most of the scenes didn’t have enough time to marinade. Specifically, the bachelor/ bachelorette scenes- I think those scenes were the best/ most interesting part of the film. In hindsight, if they would have reworked the plot/ script and made the movie solely on Eddie Murphy’s and Julia’s (Jonah’s mom) experience on their daughter/ son in law’s bachelorette/ bachelor night, it would have been a waaaaay better film! All in all, less is more could have really worked in their favor. I think Jonah and Lauren’s nonexistent chemistry made the film uncomfortable to watch. Hell, they could have had Julia Dreyfus and Eddie Murphy be the two love interest and their children could have been the ones against their union 🤷🏽‍♀️. Lol, I wish they would have thought more outside of the box.

You really hit all of these on the head. Great criticism!! Chemistry in a rom-com is the single most important element. The actors seemed like they just met the first day of filming. Not just Lauren, but Jonah did not seem to be attracted to her at all either. He seemed like she scared him. Everything about this movie, the takes, the writing all felt extremely rushed. Like the movie from writing to Post-production of the final product took 1 month. Writing and pre-pro 1 week, principle photography 2 weeks, post production editing and distribution 1 week. Like damn man.. are yall even trying any more to make good movies? Eddie just showed up, seemed to not remember some of his lines, Nia long was just there to look pretty, added absolutely nothing to the film. She deserves so much more! I just watched it and you absolutely got it right! I didn't realize what was coming across wrong, there were funny moments but then also unnecessary moments. It was incomplete in a lot of ways and some off-putting things. I really didn't understand why they had to go there with the barber scene. The lack of chemistry as well was hard to look past. AND the best friend! She is so vocal about her convictions which is amazing, but how can he hear that and still not put that into action in his relationship and put in the extra work to reach out to his future in-laws in a more real way. Yes! Yes! Yes... to everything you said!

That's so crazy to me ... if these people REALLY didn't like each other, to such a degree they couldn't perform their jobs as actors right, then why were they cast as love interests in the first place? There's so much I didn't understand about why this movie was done the way it was... I really didn't like it and it felt like such a waste of talent and resources.

I feel so much the same- especially about your rewrite for Ezra's character. That makes sooo much sense and would be so nuanced because even the best intentioned yt folks sometimes can overestimate their cultural competency. Especially those who are "Black culture appreciators". We ALL can and it would've been interesting if even that went both ways- like if Lauren's character had some misjudgments about Jewish people that needed to addressed. But yeah the core issue is that I simply didn't believe their relationship. I loved seeing Lauren acting again, but this wasn't the best breakout role for her. I feel like a good lead would've been Black girl who has more comedy chops/nerdy edge to her- I could see Jessica Williams, Phoebe Robinson, Yvonne Orgi, someone like them. But let's be real- all of those women are too brown/dark-skinned to be a lead love interest in a Kenya Barris production 🤣🙃

Heyyy!! Here from your post in the black screenwriter group. This review is SPOT ON!! Great job!
I had hoped that this movie would be pretty entertaining or funny because it had such heavy hitting actors in it!
But overall I disliked like the movie for many of the reasons you mentioned! In addition, one of the biggest issues were the lack of chemistry with Jonah and Lauren - and the overall writing, acting and directing. It seems like it came from a rookie Director but it didn’t.
The movie displayed results of forced writing with an abundance of clichés, and was cringey to watch. And the opening scene about Pres Obama was simply unnecessary and not funny, which set the tone in terms of what we could expect for the rest of the movie. Unfunny.
With the cast of heavy hitters and the backing of Netflix, this could’ve been sooooo much better. The main couple- both Jonah and Lauren - are great actors, but I would not have selected either of them for this movie. Lauren is beautiful and I’m so happy to see her getting back into her career after such a tremendous loss, but I’ve really never seen her be the lead in a comedy. And this wasn’t it. And Jonah fell flat in this role. I’ve never really seen him play in a romcom. Great concept in terms of coming from different cultures and trying to blend the family. But it just fell flat for me.
Last point… I love comedies! So to have Eddie Murphy and Deon Cole in a movie together and you manage to get only two chuckles out of me?? That’s just sad. When typically those are two of the funniest comedians I enjoy on screen!

I really loved the film, or maybe I just loved to see Lauren on screen. I do agree the writing was lazy and they didn’t explore the Muslim faith as much as the Jewish faith, I mean there was a whole church service! I actually saw a lot of chemistry between them, I think people think it’s not intimacy if you give each other space to be yourselves.

This movie was awful. There was absolutely no chemistry between Jonah Hill and Lauren London. Eddie Murphy was completely wasted in this film. Nia Long had like 5 lines. The writing was lazy. You mean the only way to know that Eddie Murphy's character was a Muslim was a Fred hampton was murdered hoodie and a Kufi? This movie was so bad it made Tyler Perry films look like masterpieces.

This movie was such a let down. Full of the same old tired tropes and stereotypes that are common to Mr. Barris' work. He's really trying to milk this black - white thing for all its worth. It's just tiresome. As someone else said in the comments - how could you have Deon Cole and Eddie Murphy in the same movie and the movie not be funny? This movie was a 2 out of 10.

I was rooting for this movie but I couldn't pinpoint why i lost interest. I agree, Kenya makes content for a certain audience. I am a fan of every celebrity that was in this movie but it did seem to be rushed. There is only a 12 year age difference Laura and Nia so the mother and daughter casting was not believable.

Good review - the only thing is that Barris is a tv writer. You People - was written in a tv sitcom format - choppy. I don't give him credit for being a great writer or director. He's more like a tv hack, pure entertainment and shock value. But he knows how to tell stories and the beats to get the tv or movie made. I agree with what you say - but he needs to be a legit A-list movie writer /director. My critique is similar but not to be taken more as seriously. 1. Jonah looks too old to be looking for parental validation 2. Eddie looked too hip to be a Muslim, and the cussing was too much for his persona. I could go on and on, but I liked it, and it's a movie in which you go alone for a ride. I want to hear your review of Emancipation.

Jonah and Lauren are both almost 40 yrs old...like....why would two 40 yr old adults care that deeply about what their families think of their interracial relationship???
The film might had worked if their characters were in their early 20s. Not almost middle age!

Great timing that your video popped up on my TH-cam feed. My twin sister turned this movie on last night while we were having dinner.
I watched about 20 minutes of it with her- yet, was uncomfortable the whole time. It didn't sit well with spirit (My spirit)!
The outrageous amount of cursing, the "n" word being used, etc.
I agree with you, with it being lazy.
My sister laughed throughout it and after I finished my dinner I excused myself, with grace and love. She called upstairs to me and asked if I wanted to finish the movie with her and I just said: No thank you .

    Movie was Hot GarBaj.
An Allstar cast and there was no laughing moments.
STRiKE 1, 2, & 3... anything Kenya is behind is starting to get very 1 dimensional, typical, predictable, and is running its course.
And why everything black in this film is very stereotypical... taking the white guy wearing a red hoodie to a barbershop that has Crip gang members in it; GTFOH!!!
This movie was just at times way over the top and super embellished.
I really want this to be done over and re-written by either Issa Rae, Justin Simien, or even Keenan Ivory Wayans if we just want laughter.
