    There are a few simple things most Graphic Designers overlook when starting their careers: Empathy for the client. Many graphic designers are more concerned with making something that looks cool, rather than solving the client's problem. Being able to demonstrate and communicate value, and be a champion for the client is what will make you a successful graphic designer, not pushing the pretty pixels better than anyone else. At least not in the long run.
    Understand marketing, client relationships, business and salesmanship, how to communicate both in person and on paper, and you won't have to worry about whether you can pay the bills working in this industry.

      You can't always do what they want if it conflicts with what they need, but you need to be in a position to confidently and respectfully tell them so. They wouldn't tell a doctor how to operate on them...

      Roberto Blake Very good point. Wholly missing from her presentation. The key is to maintain that balance of being a yes-man and doing good work. Servicing your client properly often doesn't mean providing the best work - it is the work they want.

    Great lecture! It's 2016 and still relevant. Loved her energy, passion and delivery. Shared a wealth of knowledge, but most importantly, was not BORING! Hahaha... I'm a graphic artist just turning 40, now freelancing and creating my own product line. I've decided that I'm not going back to a "job" - gonna give it a go with my own talent and effort. 21 years in the fashion/manufacturing biz as an employee is long enough. That's the beauty of our creative ability - we can take it with us anywhere, we can do whatever we want. If there's a message or story to be told, we will always be needed. Thank you Jennifer Spencer!

    This is great advice! I'm 20, and am currently a student in Graphic Design after finishing my Mass Communications and Media associates. First off, find a great community college to get your degree! Cheep and personal education. Be a graphics editor at your student news paper if you can (often involves scholarships). Its hard work but an amazing experience. Also, your professors frequently communicate with local businesses to line up internships so JUMP OF THEM! Intern, intern, intern! I've been blessed with a payed internship too, they are out there. Jennifer Spencer is SO RIGHT about the attitude thing. Stay grateful, work hard, be EMPATHETIC, get to know people and have a servant heart! I also have done FREE work for my church and other ministries in my state, which has helped me learn and build my portfolio. If you can be a part of any team that works together to campaign/execute/finish a project or event (even without pay) do it!!!!!! Be part of a hard-working, servant-hearted generation instead of an entitled one!

    Lots a negative comments here. What a shame! I think she did a FABULOUS job. Even more ... I'm not even IN Graphic Design ... I work in television ... and I was hooked by her ability to COMMUNICATE. The information she gave was super useful for people in MANY professions. And she's right about how in today's economy companies are likely to hang on to you if you go above and beyond, if you bring something to the table. She had a lot of positive energy - and as we can see by some of the negative posts here - that positivity appears to be worth its weight in gold. Great job, Jen!

    I respect a lecturer who tells the students flat out that there WILL be another down term in which their field WILL be most disadvantaged. After a decade there'll be many students that are glad she said that and there'll be many who regret not paying heed to that warning.

    If I don't find any job in future on my career line then I am totally flying to Japan and settling there. Cause graphic designing program in Japan is really popular and they get pay enough in Japan. Hey, no one wants to be a homeless person. If graphic designing program doesn't have any respects in world eyes then I am gonna make the world to respect this career. That's a challenge.

    RIGHT KIDS THIS IS THE TRUTH ABOUT GRAPHIC DESIGN! You can do a degree in it but today its totally pointless. you train for 3 years on software you can learn in 3 weeks. Most of the courses are out of touch with the real world. You'll end up doing personal projects that you're given months to do but in the industry are expected to have done in a couple of days. teachers/lecturers are bullshitters! they are there because they set out to be graphic designers but have slided into the job of teachers to take refuge from that vicious world. You're better off saving your money, learning software and finding work experience with a firm. Now about that vicious world of graphic design.....
    Some of you may have a lucky break, maybe your rich daddy pulled some strings and got you a placement or a junior position with a top modern office firm, and now you're working as an inhouse designer in the city. But for the rest of you poor bastards. its a long grooling backstabbing ladder of chaos to the top. Never in my life have I seen young people be treated like worthless pieces of shit in an office, crushed, overworked and exploited for peanuts. If your a poor mac monkey with a 2bit firm that wants you to handle the clients why doing the work, god be with you. You are really going to learn the disgusting nature of humanity. Don't get me wrong, some clients are nice people and what they want is straight forward, you produce the work get paid and everyones happy. But on the other side you have to deal with these selfish arrogant delusional pieces of shit, that no matter what you seem to do it never looks right. these fuckers will squeeze any joy from your work and have you chasing your tail all week. And once you have done the absolute best for them.either they change their mind about something for the 30239th time and you have to change it agian and agian , or they'll go to another firm and slag you off to them. Its enough to get you hunting them down and beating them to death in the street with your keyboard. thats just client side. Firms, fuck me! where do i start. today the competition is so high along with hordes of cheap office labor. they want you to be everything and do everything so they can save money. they will eat you alive, burn you out then replace you with some other poor mofo. they want you to be a graphic designer, a web designer, a programer, an animator, 3d artist, media editor, the butcher, the baker, the candle stick maker all rolled into one. They'll have you dancing on the office floor like a cat on a hot tin roof. And that just the tip of the iceberg. If I had to go through everything this comment box would turn into a book. best of luck.

      ***** I don't see see any problem in what your saying. You sound like you've got a positive attitude and your out to fight the good fight. Its all good saying all that stuff but remember you've just started on that path. I myself am not a graphic designer but i've seen and had so many friends come and go who were. You are right though. Its all down to how well you network and play the game. But you can't deny that the game is vicious because of the high competition. Its not totally doom and gloom. I have the odd friend who went on to do really well as an inhouse designer or runs there own business. Just a few pieces of advice if your going freelance or starting your own business . always wine and dine potentially big clients if nothing ever becomes of it and they bummed a free meal then they'll still say you were a nice guy to others, it works. Also just be very careful, there are shit houses everywhere who will try to exploit you. You talk the talk and its sounds good what your saying. I think the trick to survival in that game is keeping a positive attitude even through the lowest points. Im not saying its impossible to make it. Im just saying. Teachers are useless they should be teaching you the industry and how to network to what is expected of you to produce in a time scale. And that in the real world its not a great job if your looking for a nice 9 to 5 in the city. Hundreds of student get into graphic design but none of the them can network so nothing becomes of them or they end up working for a hole in wall firm that abuses them, and they can't get out or demand better treatment cause theres plenty of people lining up to take their place.

    • @propjam2
      @propjam2 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** LMAO. Honestly i've seen it all and heard it all. Check this out. (this is just off the top of my head) I had this friend who finished his course. He found a position in London. So he relocated to work to start the position. after 2 months he was back. The boss wanted him to not only work from 9 till 5 but when everyone had gone home he had be the cleaner and hoover and wipe down the desks to cleaning the toilets. One day the boss asked him to bring in his portfolio in again. the boss kept it for the week nothing more was said. Weeks later another branch of the firm completed a massive job for the identity/theme for a big restaurant and sent the pictures back to the office.....And it was most of the custom designs from his portfolio!.. The boss had looted his portfolio and took all the money and credit for it..IT WAS JUST UNREAL. My friend was obviously pissed at this guy.but he said something like ' I'm really happy you used my designs for that project, its shows that there good'. AND HE WENT TOTALLY MENTAL! he flat out denied that he'd used his work and threatened to fire him if he said anymore about it. After a few days he was hoovering up some mess (not getting paid for it may I add) and being overworked and underpaid he just snapped! walked out but who wouldn't? The boss had made thousands off him.
      its all there. take care!

    I've worked in the industry almost 20 years, I pay a mortgage and support a family with 2 daughters. I wouldn't have been able to do this if I had listened to others that earn money trying to tell me to work for free. I've never once been talked into producing work for free. Graphic designers shouldn't need to, without us their business suffers. How many times I've heard "do a week in the studio without pay" or "tender for this, and then if we like it, then we will pay". No way, you've earned your degree through 3 years of hard work. Sort out your portfolio and get earning.

    She's referring to the Marketing & Promotions field (or department) in this video. Graphic Design is not just in the Marketing & Advertising industry; there is actually a Bachelor's degree course called Marketing where the grads there might be vying for the same position as grads from Graphic Design. Best to look for your own niche in Design where you can offer uniqueness.

Learn yourself a specific skill, something you truly love to do and become really good at it (10000 Hrs). Then hope that skill (life is a gamble,play to your strengths) has a demand. At that point people like Ms Spencer will be calling you not the other way the around. Thanks for the vid

    Thank you so much. God bless u. That was so enjoyable and informative. I am a geneticist muslim doctor. Genetics is like graphic design because genetics forms an integral part of essentially every science and medical field in life. Islam encourages me to enjoy every aspect of life within the glorious principles of Islam which is the best treatment for depression many people suffer from nowadays. Thank God.

      ZeroFive Nosh why did you give up?

    • @Nosh5
      @Nosh5 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      theamethyst93 i only have an aas in it which is pretty useless. I couldnt get a job any where, worked for some start ups, and it was never profitable. Not to mention the people hiring for a graphic designer have no idea what you do and will ask for crazy requirements. Like jobs that need you to know javascript, c# and other programming languages. Or like 7 years in the field? You basically can only get a job through an internship. To bad my college never helped us understand what we to get work. Gave us the horse but not the map lol. In about 5 years span i most likely 600 bucks top from freelancing. i had a bunch of issues happening in my fam, couldn't get back in school, and in the scope of becoming an adult working toward my dream got further and further. If i had to give any advice is that of your aren't aiming for a ms in Graphic design to switch to something else. Unless you have the financials, time, and effort to back up the long process of finding work. I still design things at time for myself, or small freelance gigs. For the most part, at least for me, its something i had to let go. 😓
      As a side story i recently talked to someone who is a graphic designer. After 2 years free lancing at a company the finally hired him.

      ZeroFive Nosh ahh okay. Thanks for the reply. I actually am a graduating with an economics and finance degree so I have something to fall back on but my focus at the moment is to become self taught web developer and graphic designer. The fact that you mentioned the importance of coding is a good thing in my case because I'm teaching myself to code and am working on side projects. It sucks though that design isn't the respected in many areas because I love graphic design, that's why I'm doing both.
      What are you doing now?

    Every graphic designer would prefer to start their own company.
