    I'm a multimedia design student and all this knowledge I have is unconnected information, small bits of information about everything, not specific information about anything concrete. I learned how to use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign well, but no one taught me how to actually start being designer, get recognized and get work! Your video gave me a sense of structure, where to start, what to learn first, and how to get where I want to be, so thank you!! You managed to help me more than 2 years of uni!

      Yes. I learned bits of everything in college, but very general and not in detail. For a job, you really need to dive deep into a subject. In my college they didn't prepare me properly on how to get a job either. My major was art and my minor was media and communication.

    To this day, this still has to be one of the BEST videos on this topic out there! A lot of videos just ramble on and dont really give specific steps on what to study and all that. So thank you for your clear, succint video!
    Another tip that I think might help, and correct me if im wrong, but maybe looking at the curriculums of graphic design programs, seeing what they include in their classes, and looking up information based on those classes that they offer on your own.

    This is great advice. I would also encourage graphic designers to learn how to prepare files for print, this is also a very technical skill like learning Ai or Ps but it doesn't take much time. I did not study GD but at my first GD job I had to learn how to prep a lot of flyers/posters/signs on different papers for print. If you're not sure how to prep a file for print call or email the printer they'll be happy to help.

    6:30 - you forgot to mension that, yeah to make some progress you can copy other's designs but don't publish it anywhere, cause it can be considered as stealing and a lot of people will judge you really hard

    I went to college for your years with a major in art and they didn't teach me many painting or drawing skills, to have an artistic job you really need to teach yourself as much as possible. I think one year is definetely enough to get a job in graphic design.

    • @KaYungCalebLai
      @KaYungCalebLai  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      art is quite different from design. art doesn't really solve any problems so it's hard to put a price tag on it.

    I came into graphic design almost the same way as you. I just honed in on my talent and found how to get into what I love. I agree with you until Step 3. I understand that we all learn differently, but I don't agree with stealing someone's design or design style. I have always had my own original designs. I just had to find out how to get them from my mind onto software. I do agree that if there is a designer you admire, using their work to study, follow, and emulate for the purpose of becoming better and mastering your skill is a good way to learn. I am hoping that's what you mean by "steal."

    • @KaYungCalebLai
      @KaYungCalebLai  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's an artist mindset, nothing's wrong with that. It's like fashion, you can design clothes however you want, but most people won't buy them if your design is so out of tune. also watch this vid

    I know money comes into play when self taught and learning on your own and making money and downloading a bunch of apps and learning hands on works well when your a visual learner and learning full time with designer without going through General ed courses but learn all the aspects of digital design and sketch apps that relate to what you need to put on your portfolio
