    The chairs make sense though, seeing how Micholash chained himself to a chair to perform the ritual to enter/create the nightmare. Also, we call them the lanterns (well, they are), but it's actually the bells that do the transporting (via resonant frequencies across planes of existence). The lantern just highlights the location of the bells. We use bells too to cross over into other realms. Even enemies use bells to summon beasts (like the bell maidens with those blasted red spiders).

    I like how there were different chairs for different locations. Like the Cainhurst chair looked way nicer then the Hemwick one

    I don't find Bloodborne cut content boring at all regardless of what it is

  • @nightfallalicorn4246

    Boring? This is awesome interesting stuff. Not once did I think chairs were used in early game design. This would give some idea how Micolash entered the Nightmare of Mensis.
    "Fear the old chairs." - Since they could send us to any nightmare.

    Yeah, the chair thing makes sense. It gives more weight to the corpses with cage hats in chairs too. When I played through, I saw them as vaguely creepy set peices. Ew, that guy sat there and let himself die. Why.
    But if falling asleep in a chair was how I, the player went back and forth from the hunter's dream (in a similar, slumped pose), i would see those guys who died dreaming and be like. Oh my god, could that be what is happening to MY body somewhere?

    • @TheFirstCurse1
      @TheFirstCurse1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That last line is actually creepy. What if you teleported and then later on came back to that lantern by walking and say your character sitting there? Or a decayed version of them?

  • @Writh811
    @Writh811 6 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    I think the chairs make more sense than the lanterns. We go to the Hunters' Dream, how do we get to the dream, we sit down and fall asleep. I think they could have made the chairs work but would have had to add a little more to make them stand out. They could have set the chairs in basins that appear to have water, you either make it so light is shining up out of the basin like it is kinda of a portal or you could give it that Tomb Mold Cosmos particle effect so it stand out(I did not pull the water basin under the chair out of my butt, there is a guy in Yahar'gul on the streets that is sitting in such a setup but appears to have melted. Water is also mentioned as a barrier for reaching the dream).

    No matter the cut content, I always find it interesting! ^-^
    Those chairs reminded me of how Micolash teleports us.

      An Evil Stripper Yes. That was definitely supposed to symbolize you entering someone else's dream, mirroring your own way of travelling to the Hunter's Dream. Maybe the corpse would also transport you to one of the nightmares?

  • @Schmeatboy

    I think they should’ve stuck with the chairs, its neat

    • @lrdalucardart
      @lrdalucardart 6 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      they probably though it would "blend in too much" with the environment and make it difficult to tell apart from other "normal objects" .
      Although they could had overcome this issue by and making them more unique and perceptible if they fused the lanterns and the chains together. (Like every chair with a hanging light somewhere.

    • @NatetheNerdy
      @NatetheNerdy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I get why they went with lanterns, but I agree they should have added a unique lighting effect on them so they're easy to see. It would be much more flavorful to travel to dreams and nightmares by using chairs as opposed to a lantern.

  • @balaam_7087

    I found this far more interesting than the cut enemies. This is somewhat lore-related and therefore fascinating from a story perspective

    • @balaam_7087
      @balaam_7087 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Sean Clark Yes and no. There isn’t any specific lore created for Bloodborne expounding on the chairs, that is correct. But in other works, certain novels and arcane literature for instance, concepts like these certainly do have established backstory. I only meant it would have been interesting to hear From’s take on these ideas. In the end, yeah, it’s just a chair. But it’s fascinating to think about what they could have done with it.

    • @joebailey8294
      @joebailey8294 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @Sean Clark Chairs make more sense than lanterns. If anything, the lanterns seem like a concession they had to make because of technical problems. Whenever we see people in the waking world who are in a dream, they are sitting in a chair. Take Micolash who we see mummified in a chair that we warp to the nightmare from. Now please, tell me again how chairs don't fit into the lore. Like..... what?

    • @balaam_7087
      @balaam_7087 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Joe Bailey in another video (I think one of VaatiVidya’s?) someone makes an interesting observation that it may not be the lanterns themselves that have anything to do with warping, but rather the bells attached to the lantern stem. It’s been proposed that the lantern part itself is only there to draw the player’s attention to the bells. This idea has some merit as bells are used to summon/invade as well. Just a neat observation u may not be aware of.

    • @joebailey8294
      @joebailey8294 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I was aware of that one actually. In my opinion, the explanation that since a chair is something you can sleep on and therefore it's how you access dreams is much more simple and elegant as it is supported by in-game evidence. I do agree that the lanterns could've been a gameplay concession to draw the player since chairs don't emit light and come in a variation of styles based on the area whereas lanterns are alway the same shape and are always glowing purple. The variation in the chair's styles would make them difficult to discern compared to normal chairs plus it looks like there was some serious clipping with the hunter's set when sitting in them. Its sad that they were scrapped but I can see why they did it.

    • @balaam_7087
      @balaam_7087 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Joe Bailey True. Micolash, the choir member in the cell in Ya’haar Gu’ul, Martyr Logarius, Queen Annalise, even Lady Maria and Saint Adelaide are all in chairs. It’s clear the chair was always intended to be part of the lore in some way shape or form.

    Thanks for watching, even when it's not ground-breaking lore revelations, even the little things can sometimes be intriguing! There are also "Broken" versions of a few chairs, I'm really sorry I didn't include those. I felt this video went on long enough :) I'll sneak them into a future video.

      With a game like Bloodborne even the minutia holds my interest, so I say keep at it. I've recommended to Sanadsk that a video on various filenames for objects with lore implications would be good to see, i.e. the giant gravestones in forbidden woods being called 'great one tombstone' or something like that. You definitely wouldn't find me complaining if you made a video on that subject. Ay? Aaaay?

    • @hiob8566
      @hiob8566 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I also watched a video of Sanadsk with unused dialogue and even they are amazing to listen, I saw another perculiar thing about a pic of Gehrman. See him sitting in his wheelchair remembered me at least with a part of, of your chair video. Somehow it looks very similar.

  • @Terror_Official

    I wonder if the model holding the skull was going to be an interaction where you pick up Madman's Knowledge, like the Forbidden Woods gatekeeper, maybe even the body used for all the item pickups like that.

  • @jpcsdutra
    @jpcsdutra 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I honestly think the game over all design suffered a bit from ditching not one, but those three. The chairs make imense sense to visit dreams and nightmares, as it seems you are going to sleep. I can see the statues working for chalice dungeons. And I can also see the men with skulls working for specific things like acessing someone else's nightmare, gaining insight, or it actually being the trigger for Laurence's battle in the DLC (seems early but Maria was also an early scrap, it would seem)

  • @DearFreja

    The chairs make sense thematically. You would sit in a special chair to fall asleep and return to Hunters Dream, and could then reawaken in other chairs. Not sure how lanterns fit thematically now that I think about it. Maybe just lighting your way forward, giving you a place to rest, similar to the idea of Bonfires in Dark Souls.

    Perhaps they changed the chairs into lanterns to make checkpoints stand out more.
    That warp statue from the trailer reminds me of the Archstones from Demon's Souls.
    In that game the "bonfires" were pieces of glowing rock pierced with a sword.
    So maybe that was another idea before they decided to distance it from Demon's Souls.

    I really like the chairs and how it ties into the concept of the Hunter's dream, but the placement of the chairs look a little out of place in some of the areas (the area before the hemick fight comes to mind). This probably could've been fixed with a change to the chair placement, but I like the look of the laterns in the final game compared to the chairs.

    For me this is more interesting, since it shows an earlier and very different concept for the teleportation system that is a huge part of the game. It gets the cogs turning in my brain more than seeing cut enemies, makes me wonder about the ways they would have been implemented or how it would have related to the game's lore.

    So, for the Chairs, was the idea sort of to reinforce the dream aspect of Bloodborne by having you literally fall asleep to go anywhere? Seems like the case and, thinking about, I'm not sure if I prefer the Lanterns or the Chairs.

    So, if they had decided on these chairs instead of the lanterns, does that mean that the Winter Lantern enemy would've been called Winter Chair? :P

    Great job on another thoroughly interesting video, but where is everyone getting this idea that chairs have lore significance? I've seen plenty of people citing Micolash's physical body sitting in a chair. But I mean, it's just practical, would you want to be endlessly dreaming while standing up?
    I think people are ascribing a little too much importance on a common piece of furniture. Micolash doesn't enter the dream by using a special chair, he just dreams.
    "I'm waking up! I'll forget everything!"
    He's referring to how he's in the physical world, sleeping. If he was "Teleported" to the nightmare realm by a chair, he wouldn't forget everything when he wakes up. Y'know, like how a lot of people (myself included) don't remember their dreams when they wake up?
    Also, if he was teleported to the nightmare realm by a chair why would his physical body still be sitting in it?
    As for the chairs in the place of lanterns. It might have just been a placeholder. I imagine that FromSoft would have carried some animation data across from previous games so they could have a solid baseline to build from (since most if not all Soulsborne games are functionally similar) and a sitting down animation most likely would have been among them.
    I think there's more validity to the statue warping instead since they have more of a visual distinction and cohesiveness with the Hunter's Dream aesthetic.
    And they were also shown in early build trailers.
    In a way though, the chairs really are interesting, because while I don't personally believe they carry any lore significance, they give us a nice window into the development strategies of FromSoft. And in a sense, a different kind of history to look at for a fascinating game like Bloodborne.

    It would have been interesting if they had kept the chairs as the entrance to the nightmare frontier areas.
