      M156 does have weaker top part of the engine but the rest is bulletproof. The issues you listed are rare and seen mostly on ignored cars. The internet makes it look as every m156 will fail which is far from reality.

    I bought mine with 122k miles on it. A lot of these items had been done including head bolts and lifters. I now have 152k miles on it and have done front suspension, brake pads and rotors all around, one air strut (previous owner only did 3) valve cover gaskets, coolant overflow reservoir, thermostat, a/c compressor, and probably a few other things. I still love the car and will keep it or hand it down to one of my kids. I used Brembo rotors up front and they were approx $700 for the pair. So I think worth getting.

    • @AccentOnCars
      @AccentOnCars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nice. You’ve fixed most of major items and the rest should be wear and tear from now on. Re:brakes. One could install C63 single piece rotors and won’t notice any difference on the street to save even more. But $700 for brembo is an excellent deal. OEM calipers say brembo on them so I guess oem rotors are brembo too.

    • @MrXXLERATE
      @MrXXLERATE 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And of course tires. It goes through rears about once a year. The front rotors were a good DIY project. But the rear caliper bolts were so tight that I had to take it to a shop. I thought about using one piece in the front. But they last so long I figured I may as well get the brembos. I didn’t know the e63 could have the crank position sensor issue. I thought that was e55. And I hope my transmission behaves. That is always an expensive repair.

    You should consider coilover conversion! I have airmatic struts but will soon convert to traditional springs. Have not spent much on repairs other than front air shocks, radiator, engine/tran mount and lots of maintenance. Soon will do change head bolts, i am at 97k miles, 2007 E63

    • @AccentOnCars
      @AccentOnCars  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you have already fixed front struts why convert? I will never convert unless I have to or need stiffer but better cornering car. To me, spring struts defeat the purpose of E63. It is not a race car. It is super fast saloon car. I love the plush ride quality of the “C” and sportier ride of the “S2”. I raise the car quite often too: gas stations have too steep drive ways over here. I have my own point of view regarding head bolts. If you’ve seen my replacement DIY videos on this channel you know what I mean.

    In my limited experience if you know what you are doing and can fix it on your own and have access to correct spare parts then it is absolutely reliable. Working on Mercedes engine and everything else is very logical and rewarding. you will be saying-wow that was actually simple and satisfying and everything is well built! On the other hand if you buy a used , neglected one and start taking it to the dealership for repairs it will be a never ending ordeal that can bankrupt anyone. In Europe Taxi-Mercedes with regular maintenance go 400K miles before being retired. I'm talking about the W211 in general. i can't even imagine finding parts for E63 outside Germany or even worse buying a neglected multi owner used one.

      I agree with you largely. I do most my repairs myself and have several DIY repair videos on the channel. But I can’t do everything myself because I lack knowledge and hardware/software. The point of the video is Not to intimidate people from buying one but to create awareness that this is not a Toyota. So many people reach out to me asking if it’s going to be problem-free if they change oil frequently. While that’s going to help keep the engine healthy there is more to owning old AMG.

    I’m looking at a 2007 e63 AMG for 9k. It has new front rotors, brakes & tires but it has 157k miles on it. Would you recommend it? I would like to use it for at least a couple years until I’m out of college. What do you think?

    • @AccentOnCars
      @AccentOnCars  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would look at maintenance history. How many owners did it have? For how long did the last owner had it? If it was well maintained car then at that mileage most likely most issues had been taken care of. Listen for engine noise and transmission behavior. If the engine is ticking at cold starts then it needs some repairs.
      But even then if something goes wrong please know that maintainability on German cars is not cheap. If you can fix some stuff yourself then it is not that expensive to own.
      It all comes down to what a reliable car means to you and what you can afford. German cars are not Toyoya where oil change is all it needs.

    Anyone plz help. Do you guys know what can make a ticking sound? The car i am looking at has been sitting for a month ish. And at start it made some bad tick tick sound but after a drive it wasn't so loud as before.

    • @AccentOnCars
      @AccentOnCars  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, no worries. I assume you have m156 engine, right? The ticking may come from the hydraulic lifters. It’s normal for it to happen when the car sits for long time. Make sure your oil level is at the max level using the dipstick. Drive it and drive it somewhat hard after the oil has warmed up to 80+ degrees Celcius. It should go away. If it doesn’t, you can use an engine flush and then change your oil. If that doesn’t solve it either, then it may be time for replacing the lifters.

    • @AccentOnCars
      @AccentOnCars  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mohsan. Yes, if you start the car when it is cold and it makes a ticking sound like a clock (tik tik tik tik) like in this video th-cam.com/video/15UsnoS_rL4/w-d-xo.html then you might have a bad camshaft and/or lifters. The only way to know is to open the cylinder head covers (very easy to do) and investigate the cam lobs and valves. Maybe this video of mine will help to understand how to do that. th-cam.com/video/zJO1qNnhxw4/w-d-xo.html

    • @AccentOnCars
      @AccentOnCars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree that ticking may be normal if the car has been sitting for a long time. But if it happens at each start or all the time then it might be a sign of scratched cam lobes and/or lifters. When I did my head bolts both cams and lifters were in excellent shape. Frequent oil changes and accurate oil level is the key in m156.

    I’m 16 and found one for 9k. Idk if I should get it though. I’m not worried about insurance costs (insurance is cheaper in my area), I’m more worried about maintenance. It’s owned by a wealthier fellow, has 165k miles (I live in the south, so that’s not many miles. 200k is just breaking it in around here.) and it comes with new tires, only downside is there’s a tire pressure light on the dash, but that shouldn’t be an issue as those sensors always fail. I work on cars, I can do repairs all the way down to engine rebuilds, but I’ve never dealt with German. Is it worth a shot in your honest opinion?

    • @AccentOnCars
      @AccentOnCars  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Assuming the car has been well maintained, has history, and since you can work on cars yourself, it’s the best car you can get at 16, lol :) Even better is the c63 as it is more nimble and tail happy but requires some driving skills to not kill yourself :-) The parts aren’t that expensive, although it depends on what you call expensive. Browse through FCPeuro website and take a look at common wear and tear item prices. There are tons of diy posts and videos on my channel, Facebook and forums.

      You can tell them apart. Injector tick is consistent and won’t change with RPM. Stuck lifter tick does change with RPM, audible from the cabin when going really slow, and is more like metal hitting on metal sound.

    Figure on one dollar per mile for maintenance. I bought a one owner dealer maintained 2007 E63 with 70K with absolutely no mechanical issues, but have other cars and didn't drive it much. I do a lot of my own maintenance. My wife wanted it -- badly -- for her daily driver. I agreed but told her I would not maintain it and we found a good independent shop. Three years and 35K miles later she absolutely loves it. I try and look away when the wheels get curbed. You will get check engine lights from time to time, but these cars are well known at this point and unlike BMWs there is always a fix. I have owned a lot of cars and this car is built like a Panzer tank with a jet engine - simply amazing, but not cheap to run. Life is short, choose accordingly.

      I hope you can get it fixed for cheaper. The problem with 722.9 transmissions is that you cannot replace the conductor plate like in older 5 speed MB trannys since it requires coding to marry the new unit to the VIN. I couldn’t get a clear answer whether replacing just the conductor plate was possible or not. I ended up replacing the whole unit: plate and valve body. • @AccentOnCars
      @AccentOnCars  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      W212 E63 is a solid but different car. Up until 2011 w212 E63 had the same m156 engine. If you find one that is late 2011 then you should not be worried about head bolts since MB updated bolts by then. You can check using the VIN. After that they used m157 twin turbo engine. But not perfect either. Common engine issues for m157 may be stretched timing chain and cylinder scoring. MB used a different materials to reduce friction in cylinders which is the culprit for scoring. I wouldn’t buy a tuned one. Also I’d make sure they changed oil very often.
      They've used high quality materials in the interior, but some rattles and chirps may develop as the car ages. I would say W211 interior is more solid than W212. But w212 interior is more modern. W212 is more expensive too because it is newer.
      For 2012+ w212 we only get 4Matic W212 E63 in the US which means it is fast, can be driven all year long. W211 is RWD and much more fun to drive for me personally as I can spin tires, drift and power slide.
      Sorry I can’t tell you what to do. It depends how much you want to spend now vs if something breaks. I think you should drive both, decide which one you like more, and then try finding one that was very well maintained and has service history.

      @AccentOnCars  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I think the customer asking for hourly rate is totally normal as everyone shops around before buying a service or goods. As for the lift situation: there are jobs I feel comfortable doing myself, such as head bolt replacement, there are jobs I could do myself if I had a lift, and there are jobs I can’t do myself even if I had a lift.
      Anyhow, I still have the car and love it. Haven’t had any major issues since this video.

      @@AccentOnCars shopping around?? I totally get that part… I even tell my customers the same… but from what it seemed like in the video was you played off their rate and claimed job takes a half hour… my only question was how did you come up with a half hour?? Do you have alldata or some sort of labor guide?? And as far as the lift part… true story that happens all the time but really for a mount two jack stands maybe two jacks 🤷🏽‍♂️ and also back to the 30 min… when does that time start?? Must be when the tech already has it up in the air and all the tools laid out ready to go lol… mean no harm thanks for the video was interested in buying one 🙏🏽

      I said most of us, not all of us :-) I’ve been a benz guy for a long time. But I am not a fan and could switch. But, most likely it will be German again despite all the reliability concerns. I would consider Lexus GS-F or RCF if I were to go Japanese.

      I had a tuned w212 E550. It was making 550+ hp. That bi-turbo m278 is a beast. Basically m157 is built on m278. But regardless how much you tune it, it doesn’t handle or doesn’t give you the same emotions as AMG. Similarly, even if you get 700 hp out of Maxima it is not going to be the GTR. I am not saying folks should only buy high performance cars and spend a lot of money maintaining it :-) Haven’t driven newer Infinity yet. Hope will get one for a review soon. Thanks again for watching and sub to support:-)
