My New Favorite Way to Camera Track In Blender

- Do you want to camera track fast and easy in Blender? Here I show you one of my new favorite methods and why I love it so much!
In this VFX Blender Tutorial, we will dive into the world of camera tracking using geometry. Most of the times when dealing with CGI, we have to model out real world geometry using footage so why not go ahead and use that geometry to get a decent camera track. I'll be going over how to use the geometry tracking addon and FSPY in combination in order to get a good camera solve and save a ton of time with camera tracking in blender.

I respect such people who share secrets with the people for free
Very handy the detail related to scaling the scene 👍
Nice tutorial, thanks for mentioning! Just so you know, you can try fix sphere jittering with help of Smoothing (in the smoothing tab). That often helps.
Thanks I'll definitely give that a shot!
Interesting workflow. Gotta try that
Thank you for making the video
So cool you just made it so simples to understand :) thanks
alaluya ..1 year triying to make camera track in blender (i know to do in cinema ,after efects but no blender) becasue all tutorial are longer and complicated and the poeple dont say good all process.... and i have got hose plugings for month for another things..but now its faster and efective..THANKS MAN , from spain (europe) GRACIAS !!!
Thank you!
You're a lifesaver and i mean it!
Underrated channel. You are a goat!!
You are the best!
Let’s gooo Jacob uploaded!
I’ve been struggling getting fire and smoke working in Blender (both cycles and eevee) do you have any suggestions or do you think you might ever make a video on that? Thank you!!
Hello! Blender pyro sims are really unoptimized and don’t give you realistic results. I’d recommend checking out Embergen which is a great fire sim program for cheap and provides amazing results. Better yet is you can export them to blender to make some cool stuff. I might make a video on my workflow I’ve used in the past so stay tuned!
As Jacob said, EmberGen is the best option for fire and smoke sim, you can export into Blender as VDB
bro wtf this is so fu2king goooood
Hi Jacob. Your tutorials have really helped me get to grips with Blenders camera tracker so thanks for that.
One question i'd love to see a tutorial on - if i have some lidar (from open topology) and i want to line that up with my camera track how do you do that in blender.
Lets say the lidar / mesh isn't in the same world space as your camera track - what is the workflow for aligning that mesh with the world space from the camera track?
I recently found out that EXR can actually take up less space than PNG. If you set export settings to half float and DWAA compression (technically you lose data but it's imperceptible) than if you pixel peep, the EXR looks better than the PNG! It's been a game changer for my workflow.
DWAA compression is good but it contains some bugs if you have some passes
@@emilsvfx Good to know!
Hello Jacob, I would love it if you would make a tutorial on product vfx animation I wouldn’t care if it is paid or free TH-cam is really lacking these sort of tutorials?
Same I want to get into product vfx
Geotracker alternative ?👀
Hi Jacob, just a Recommend - maybe you can try "perspective Plotter" Addon - u can make the same as fspy but inside Blender. The Autor makes the Addon in Base of Fspy....
I've been meaning to check it out so I'll definitely take a look!
Amen to this. Do I NEED Perspective Plotter? No. But it allows me to work with Fspy without having to leave Blender (I'm not a fan of doing something in one program, saving it out, importing it in another, etc., especially when you have to change something and do it all over again -- Perspective Plotter solves that issue). It's a nice little improvement to workflow.
Great tutorial, do you have any options or alternatives for replacing the Geotracker addon because my trial has already expired?
Unfortunately I do not know of any good alternatives for blender however there is always the traditional camera tracking appraoch
@@Jacob_Zirkle okay thanks. btw, there is ae2blend addon in after effect and blender. i think this addon more affordable than geotracker. I haven't try it, maybe you have and give a review or tutorial.
Can you make an alternative video on Geotracker alternative or how to go about using it again after trial
Hi unfortunately I do not condone trying to find a way to use it after the trial. It's really cheap compared to other software we use so I'd give it a try and then purchase month by month if you need.
@@Jacob_Zirkle 18€ monthly for just a tracker (great one, but a tracker) is not something I'd call cheap giving it's not a service but a tool.
@@ArtemGms idk you have to take into account the price of software as you start to get to more of a professional level. You don’t need to purchase a year so if you have 1 shot where you need the geotracker addon it’s just $18 which is super cheap. Nuke alone is ~$4,000 a year which is worth it because the return is so much higher with the clients that require it. I understand if you’re not making money off of your work but trust me $18 is reasonable priced for what it offers and I’ve used it for a lot of things.
What about Ae2blend ? Not working any more ?
Hey, I am planning to shoot a scene where little flying robot drone is having a conversation and going down a street with a person. Any tips on which tutorial would be best for this? As I'd like to see the process before I film it, to film it in the most optimal way. Thank you!
I would take a look at camera tracking tutorials to understand all of the aspects that make a good camera track just because that’ll be the most important thing to get right. Flying objects help a ton with that because you don’t need the camera to be as precise since it’s not touching the ground however it’s still important to learn about parallax and things to watch out for
@@Jacob_Zirkle AH okay so Camera Tracking and Parallax should be my focus?
Palace of Culture and since Warsaw🍺
🤩
Cant see it in the render viewport, what is the problem? Could you please help?
thank you. of iran
So in this approach you're using FSpy only to get correct focal length for camera, right? Or did I miss something?
Focal length and more important the correct rotation for our scene so it makes modeling objects easier and more accurate
@@Jacob_Zirkle Thank you for reply! I was thinking about using FSpy with regular built-in tracker in Blender. Because sometimes it is kinda hard to align floor in the scene.
Have you tried something like this without geotracker addon? Just FSpy and Blender.
Thanks! ;)
@@SevaZelikov I remember using it one time just to position my floor for static shots and then you can also use it for tripod shots as well with blender camera tracking
@@Jacob_Zirkle Thank you, man! ;)
Precisely, I'm working on a project, but I need to track some heads. Still looking for a way out. 😢
Geotracker offers a face builder license option as well so you can model any face to track. Hopefully that helps!
Bro this fspy is not helping much like for some videos the camera is coming inverted like z-axis going down any help?? Tried many images but still not getting the correct proportion
i found geotracker and its free or am i using the wrong one
no meu blender fps de video e mega lento ta em 2.48
Great But with fspy there is lens destortion
Misleading video as per thumbnail.
Nah
might be worth mentioning theres paid addons before the 5 minute mark dont remember you saying anything about it earlier in the video
Free alternative geotracker?
Unfortunately, not that I know of. I will say they offer a really competitive price from other geometry tracking software especially if you just need it for a few shots so definitely go check it out!
I really think you should be saying you're using a paid tool upfront. Less people would be interested in watching, but it's the right thing to do
Hello, Geotracker isn't free anymore
@@cagalagosiit matters to some people.
hmm, I downloaded it right now
Geotracker is really cheap compared to other simlar programs and if you are doing this as a job, 1 job can pay for 10 years of the program and so that's really how you have to look at the price of these. I understand it might be for personal work, but I would say there are way more predatory pricing structures elsewhere.
At this point use a proper camera tracker software
There are cases where a camera tracking software would be the best and then there are cases where this would be better. You can totally achieve exact sticking for geometry in camera tracking software however this is much faster and will allow us to get similar results if all we want to add is CG near the model. Most of the time this is good enough for these shots and sticks really well without spending hours tracking. Every shot is different and there are plenty where I would do what you’re saying for accuracy
Fspy doesn’t even work with blender anymore idk why people still make tutorials with it
Hi I’m a little confused on what you mean FSPY doesn’t work?
works for me
Bro, surely there are people who appreciate the time you take to make these tutorials and teach some of what you know, but specifically in this video, what you show is a very silly method. It's like wanting to use a screwdriver to drive a nail. GeoTracker is very good and it can be used, but the tool is designed for a different type of tracking.
Hello! At the end of the video I talk about when you would want to use this method and when you wouldn’t. It’s not a great method for every footage however if you just have simple camera movement that needs to interact with an object and not all over the frame, it gets the job done and is much faster in such case. I’ve used it in many client jobs and have never gotten complaints about drifting or CGI not sticking. It’s just about being smart and knowing when to use it
I was so excited until I saw that you need keentools :/
It is free?
Thank you@@cagalagosi
Unfortunately it's paid like Symbolic said however it's super cheap compared to other software and if you are using it for a job, most single jobs can pay for 10 years +. Just think of it as an investment for making more money and you'll realize the cost is super managable!
Great tutorial! Why wouldnt you be able to offer free tutorials on youtube... , I understand that its nice with patreons and all but you do get paid for views on TH-cam right?
Hi! Good question! As I love providing free content for my audience, it's not self sustaining and therefore if I do not try to monetize, then I would have to end the channel to focus on other aspects. This way I can still afford to set time aside for youtube and provide free learning. I do get paid for ads, but every little bit counts and helps funnel funds back into my channel. Hopefully that makes sense of why I say that and my rationale.
