BETRAYED on the BAY: Omega DELAYED Menhaden Study HB19 w/ VA House in Complicit Vote

- After YEARS of fighting and work, concerned citizens, scientists, organizations, and others had FINALLY solidified the scientific framework for a MENHADEN study in the Chesapeake Bay to determine if these vital fish are being overfished and depleted.
Unfortunately, at the last minute, it appears that OMEGA PROTEIN successfully lobbied the Virginia House Studies Subcommittee to quietly DELAY HB19 - the Bill set FUND the Menhaden Study - yet again, this time until 2025.
After YEARS of Omega and our representatives claiming that they support science-based fisheries/resource management - and after YEARS of assurances that Omega Protein is not overfishing Menhaden in the Chesapeake - and DESPITE NUMEROUS scientific and public-reported indicators of overfishing - Omega successfully lobbied VA House representatives to delay this crucial study.

Thank-you for speaking out on this. The reduction fishery is authorized to extract 158,137 metric tons of menhaden from the Chesapeake Bay and entrance. That is equivalent to 3/4 of a billion fish! It's great to see that public awareness and outrage is growing quickly. Hold them accountable!
I’m going to work on some other videos that will hopefully send people back to this one and help them better understand just how important Menhayden are.

We used to have a significant Stripper run in both the fall and spring on Assateague island now the spring run in greatly diminished and the fall run is nonexistent

Multi-pronged issue. Overharvest, spawning ground degradation, water quality issues, commercial harvest, and Omega undermining the entire foundation of the Bay.

Happy to help in any way I can, Scott. The amount of fish they are harvesting from the bay is insane and disgusting. I suspect their effects are so far reaching that it’s difficult for us to truly wrap our minds around it.
That said, Omega lackeys are clearly very afraid of us trying to scientifically measure their impact at all.

@@KambotroutFishing youre on fire, I just saw this video after I commented. I am ok with Chesapeake Channa, as Patuxent fish I found slanderous.
Virginia has a spotted history of bad practices for the Chesapeake. Last year I was out fishing the lower bay and saw 3 massive trawlers fishing the menhaden. My dad said they are there all day every day.
Sadly true. There was an incident recently with someone trying to block or interfere with the trawlers. VA quickly racketed up penalties for it.

Great video, thank you for spreading this information. Reminded me of the old stories about the hatred between MD and VA fisherman for the laxer regulations. Deffinitley need to keep up on it!
Thanks Andrew. I love making straight-up fishing videos, but I love the science communication and fisheries management news as well.
It’s a shame when it devolves down to MD vs VA, but it’s unavoidable to some degree and there is plenty of blame to go around.
MD should have long ago closed the trophy season and harvest of big breeder striper, and VA should have long ago ended Omega’s menhaden reduction fishery.
And those states north of MD on the Susquehanna should do more about the pollutants they pump into the river before it hits MD, and Constellation/Exelon I should have planned for ways to remove all the built-up silt and debris up against Conowingo Dam long ago.
Much blame to go around.

I think it’s great you call out the people who are responsible for this so we can hold them accountable
It’ll take just about all of us. Takes a lot of the people and a big spotlight to speak louder than the lobbying money of Omega
statistics can be made to look however you want and that usually falls on the side of the group with the most money$$$ sad but true.
That’s where digging into the study methodology comes in. In this case, with all the other stakeholders involved and how much Omega is dragging their feet, I think we may actually have a framework that makes sense for the accurate measuring and preservation of menhaden populations.
What I’m watching for now are efforts for Omega and their lackeys to water-down the 9 metrics/methodologies they’ve already agreed upon as part of HB19 before it’s funding is considered again in 2025.

Hello I’ve never caught a snakehead but have been trying to. I wanted to ask if it’s possible to catch them during the winter? It’s almost spring time now but the water is still cold. Any tips from anyone?
They can still be caught in winter, but it’s best to wait until water temps hit 50 degrees. That’s when you can usually safely bet on catching a couple.

I love our Chesapeake so very much and we’ve been dealing with their “spills” and despicable practices since we moved here 20 years ago. Thank you for this video & information. I will SHARE AGAIN and AGAIN AND AGAIN until these greedy politicians do SOMETHING to help our BEAUTIFUL LIFE ON THE CHESAPEAKE BAY!

A trawler was seen working bunker schools off northern NJ not sure whats up with that. Maybe explains why the bunker has been almost nonexistent this year.
As far as I know that shouldn’t be legal unless they’re licensed for purse seines.

@KambotroutFishing yeah I dont think it is. But its also not legal for the small boats to net bunker where they do and no one stops them either lol. Not that they are a big deal or anything just noteworthy that the main harbor the small boats net isnt even in limits of their zone and no one has done anything about it for years

Hopefully people realize sooner rather than later. We can do other things to help the Bay and its other species, but menhaden are a foundational element of that ecosystem.

This is a tough one.
Most people aren’t taught how important menhaden are. Even if you approach it from the standpoint of “here’s why you should care because of how they affect something you care about”, someone has to want to learn to really dive in.
But it’s worth the fight. The only other issues I see as affecting the bay as much as menhaden numbers are water quality and development.
It's infuriating that people take a job that should help people and sell out to corporations. Use your voice.
