    05/24/23... Lake Buchanan Texas? Hey brother been fishing this lake for twenty years it's a weird year mini cold fronts low lake levels. This year for the 1st time ever the fish never Came up to the North end of the lake in the Spring. But the shout and everything is two months late last year was a month late from the normal? The white bass came up but they are late couldn't make it up the river to spawn. It looks like they're spawning in the main lake late. But the stripers and hybrids usually follow them. And for some reason they stayed at the south end of the lake. Maybe they'll come up pretty soon. I don't know but all our guides including myself are having a tough time. Getting On Big fish. I'm just wondering if you've ever experienced like this? Thanks Mike, love your videos mean it.

    Would really like to get your opinion on Clarks Hill/Strom Thurmond Lake, specifically during these constant heavy rain weather patterns. Saw you've fished it before. Got skunked a week ago with a buddy fishing big, probably 5-7 inch live herring down lines and planer boards and floats among other lures spoons, spinners, umbrella rig, etc.. Fished mid-lake, got in the water at around 12pm right before a big cold front was coming. Ambient temp was about 70 degrees, can't remember water temp. Started near the mouth of a pretty big creek that dumps into the main river channel, immediately noticed how muddy the water was even in the main river channel, tried anyways. I let the wind push me up creek had a nice drift with the boards and floats, put the herring at different levels throughout the day 10-30ft in the creek bed channel zig zagging over steep dropoffs and secondary points. Saw bait balls (6 or 7 times) that were all about 20 feet down and a few times saw fish about 20ft down also so we targeted them and no bites. I spent 5 hours going up this creek because of the bait balls and holding onto hoping that maybe they would be more shallow, but ended up not going all the way up the creek channel. Called it a day when depth was about 10ft just couldn't get over how muddy it was and saw no activity at all on the electronics. ....So what I think I take away from this trip and your videos is my main problem is over committing to one spot especially with mobile striper/hybrid. The weather has been tough but still should be able to find them. I know I absolutely need better electronics mine are 10+ years old, only downscan and they go out constantly..checked and checked for loose connections etc.. I need that sidescan for sure also. My gut also tells me I should have got back in the truck when I was at the ramp looking at how muddy the water was, drive back down, and put in near the dam and hope for clearer water around main lake points. Would have liked to been able to boat down there but it's an older boat, 50hp and really need to stay in a couple mile radius. So whats your opinion on all that? And do these fish even mind muddy water? Do they tend to stay away from it? If I was a fish I'd look for that clean clean water but Im not a fish who knows. Would greatly appreciate some of that fish yoda/whisperer wisdom. I've got no clue haha. Thanks for reading all this and responding along with your time and your videos. Keep it up!!

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Muddy water can be tricky. I have had some epic days in the mud, and crappy days as well. When the bite is great, it’s great, even in mud. HOWEVER, in most cases VERY muddy water can be a challenge. I deal with moderately muddy water a lot and BIG bait really helps, I know you can buy Herring in your areas, but try to get big Gizzard Shad for muddy water. Keep in mind: The more stable the weather, the better the fishing will usually be, if it’s unstable and/or muddy prepare yourself for a challenge. You may need to run and look for cleaner water, use bigger baits, pull baits slower, run shallower, avoid main lake. Think shallow this time of year. VERY shallow 😉

    • @craigsnow4078
      @craigsnow4078 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Thanks a ton, great tips! Will definitely try to locate some Gizzard Shad. Yeah am really set on pushing shallower thats what I usually do this time of year but its just been bust after bust for me in the mud, constant storm systems this winter. Gonna change it up though like you said and hunt for shallower clearer waters maybe rockier, less clay bound waters. Thanks again much appreciated!

    I'm trying to figure out the stripers on Lake Chesdin. It's a very small Lake compared to a lot of these. There is a resident striper population though that gets stocked annually. I remember being very young going out with my grandfather trolling some deep running Mann's lures and catching a few, following the original river channel. I'd like to know more about how to find them now though.

    Thanks for the information. Would love to see your suggestions for Boone Lake in TN. That is my go to lake for Striper fly fishing.

      I know Boone well. That was my favorite lake in the world back in the day. I remember doubles on 40lbers regularly. We would fish a full week and never see another Striper fisherman. I hear the lake is rebounding some.

      terry mise Cherokee is an awesome lake! Where I caught my first striper when I was 12 years old. Been hooked ever since! I will drive down by myself and throw top water at night late spring early summer. The old timers that got me into striper fishing have passed away but they had me all over these lakes growing up. I love watching these videos and fishing with different people always learn something new or different with different people.

      Derick Graves I’m going to give that night time top water a try this year. Any advice is much appreciated Derick like any good areas to cast net gizzard shad from the dam to mid lake?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      terry mise Bait was very easy to get every time I was there. Look in the backs of the creeks for flips very shallow or in the creek channels on your sonar.

    • @tmise50
      @tmise50 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Smedley Will give that a try Mike. I’ve had good luck netting threadfin shad and have done ok with alewives cast netting with a deep hole net and sabiki rigs. Want to get more into using gizzard shad for bait. I think you mentioned on a video that it’s best to catch them a couple of hours or so before sundown? Maybe at day break also?

      Sure, I fished Cherokee quite a bit many years ago and a few other lakes in Tennessee. I fish Melton Hill just a handful of times. My favorite lake in Tennessee used to be Boone way before the damn broke.
