Last fall I was in the Wegmans in Williamsport, PA and to my surprise I saw “Chesapeake channa “ on sale for $17/pound, whole fish.
I’ve heard from others about them being in supermarkets, but not under “Chesapeake channa” yet. That’s wild. Folks are QUICK on the marketing lol.
Once the country knows the taste and texture, they’ll be in incredible demand.
I saw one in Canandaigua NY as well at Wegs
Will always be Snakehead for me. Your intro is right on!
Waiting to see how quickly those filets entered markets and restaurants now.
If there's a demand, where will they get the supply? Perhaps farm raise them at some point like Tilapia?
Unless the state specifically outlaws it, or refuses to issue permits, Snakehead Farms will be emerging in the near future.
They may outlaw search farms though to promote the bowfishery and commercial fishing to drive harvest of wild fish.
Completely Agree
Great video and info.
Thanks brother 👊
I preferred, “Chicken of the Chesapeake”…
😂😂
Gotta change the name to Kambochanna fishing now.
Man I been wrestling with that decision for about 7 years lol
@@KambotroutFishingKamboChanna does sound good though.😎
@@KambotroutFishing KamboChanna sounds a lot like kombucha. Maybe stick with what people know you as
Caught my first snakehead while frogging for bass last summer. I agree with you on the great qualities of these awesome fish. I’ll definitely be targeting them more this year👍
Congrats brother 👊 Only other fish that comes close to em for me in freshwater is smallies. Even then, I prefer Snkehead, but most of all, I like rivers that have both 😏
@@KambotroutFishing Smallies are still my #1, but I don’t put them on my plate.
I think last year Wegmans in HARCO had em labeled as channa, both whole and fillets. Only remember seeing them in the spring though.
I heard they were on sale but didn’t know it was marketed as “Channa”. Smart marketing ahead of its time
Honestly l like it a step in the right direction but I will still call them Snakehead too
My Sister in law , who love to eat them and gets a little mad when we throw the back, rebranded the “Yum Yum” fish to make them more palatable
lol, “yum yum” fish is good stuff. She use the yum yum sauce with them?
I can get on board if we change largemouth to ditch pickle and pickeral to slime darts as well.....
The ditch pickles lol
@@KambotroutFishing should we not make the fake native species everyone wants to protect sound less appetizing ?
Very interesting. I feel that the rebrand def means moving to sport fish and will pretty soon start protecting them.
I’m hopeful brother. Seen some other signs too.
Grass is not our spot brother, what to do with it? Snakehead does not feed in plain water.
What kind of depth and what is the bottom made of? Any submerged or laydown timber?
@@KambotroutFishing I am an Indian, here the pond is muddy water, I used the spinner bait and after watching your video, still the snakehead is not attacking. There is plain water here, no grass, our spots, water is also not as common as Snakehead. do it for him
Thanks Steve! Great insight!
I like you will refer to them as snakehead in most conversations…
You got it, Bill 👍
They’ll be Northern Snakehead or Channa Argus to me, but I’ll play in the “Chesapeake channa” vernacular where I have to 😏
Snakehead are good eating for sure. Definitely my favorite fish to target as well. Eventhough I've been catching them for the last 8 years or so, it still feels like catching something exotic. As soon as some vegetation starts growing, it'll be on. The thrill of catching them is great and then a whole different experience fighting them after you land them. They fight in and out of the water like no other.
That “fight after the fight” is my favorite part. The chaos and challenge they can create in the kayak sets them apart from any other fish I’ve caught
I agree. I tried explaining to a few people, but without experiencing it first hand, no one truly understands how crazy they can be.
Lets be real ~ great to promote a commercial fishery around invasive species (100p agree), however it will not be without impact to the Snakehead Rod and Reel anglers (i.e. more bow-fisherman tearing up the creeks chasing commercial limits while absolutely destroying natural vegetation, new creek netting approaches, etc). It may also have peripheral impact to other species depending on the approaches used. So while I applaud this movement (although name is dumb), it is not without potential negative impacts. At the end of the day, more studies are needed, more science, and more collaboration between commercial guys and recreational anglers around this species.
Very well said. No arguments from me.
change name for table? Give gamefish designation. Too easy for bow hunters to clean out a creek in a night
I’d be happy with a creel limit, but it’ll take massive public pressure to make it happen.
Ironically, making snakehead a fixture in restaurants everywhere may eventually be the trigger for them to get protection since a market will then exist. Be a lot of pain until then though.
cool info!
Thanks, Trevor and thanks for watching brother
anytime snakehead jesus.... were stilll calling them snakehead !@@KambotroutFishing
Very fun, definitely has improved my slice of heaven which is my home waters, has added a lot of fishing pressure in the river I grew up on fishing and I have absolutely fell in love with kayak fishing in general. I have caught 16 species of fish on my home river and sorry most people know it but im not gonna say….only hints it’s eastern shore and Kambo trout has made some appearances there and actually crossed paths with him.
Well said Gary. In all the waters I fish, Snakehead have just become another fun and tasty addition to those waters.
I think I may know the river by your description too. If so, I love that river. Few if any other rivers I’d rather fish.
I dont think I'll ever get used to the new name
I’ll use it as necessary, but they’ll be Channa Argus and Northern Snakehead for me.
I agree I remember when we were in florida and my mom was like “there’s Dolphin on the menu?!?!” Lol
lol, for outdoorsmen/women, we really don’t care. Most of us would eat snake meat itself.
But for “normies”, palatable branding is huge.
So when someone at the restaurant asks what is CHESAPEAKE channa? Is the answer not gonna be northern snakehead. I don't see the point. People need to change there way of thinking. Not change what we call things so they can remain stupid.......
“Oooooooo, Chesapeake channa? That sounds exotic. I’ll have the channa 😊” 😂
🤣@@KambotroutFishing
The word " Chesapeake " makes me think about Chesapeake bay which is salt water .
While Snakehead is fresh water fish .The name " Chesapeake Channa " doesn't make any sense .
For me it's Snakehead forever .
I find them in brackish, but once that brackish tips toward salty, I agree that snakehead do not do well.
Proponents though will say it’s justified by the “Chesapeake region and its tributaries” 😏
