Absurd headlight design in Project Opel GT 1971 #30
One of the coolest pop-up headlights in automotive history did not come without any downsides. Key words are rust / prone. Some improvements could and should be done, but still this complex structure with rubber sealed panels are (and will be in the future) places to go through thoroughly during spring and autumn maintenance.

What Opel GT and Talbot Horizon has in common ? Please see the episode for the answer. Summertime has been very nice and lot of other projects has kept me out of the garage. Here is, however, new episode for the 1971 Opel GT "the rustiest GT ever brought back to road"...

Thank YOU all for watching this project on my channel. I started to make TH-cam diary for the project for couple of my friends, and did not expect it to interest other people as well. Super happy for the community that has appeared to support and help me with the WORLDS RUSTIEST Opel GT. Currently working with 2.2E engine, and rear wheel arches. Hopefully next episode will be out soon. Thanks f...

Project Opel GT 1971 #23 : Weatherproof homemade roof vents ?
Almost 100 hours spent to this roof venting. Hopefully it will work as it should and this beautiful, yet prone to rust, vent grill will last another 50 years. Needles to say, I would say that during this month I have created a love/hate relationship to this panel. The inner beam with vent channels will be welded in when I receive the weld-thru glue.
Most difficult fix ever : Project Opel GT 1971 #22
This episode was difficult to labor. The roof venting panel is so complicated to fabricate, and surprisingly enough, found yet another bad fix from the past. This episode is about fabricating the panel, and next episode should include the welding. This one might need some assistance from experts, and maybe a new TIG welding machine.

I thought that this Christmas time would be perfect time to tackle the obvious disaster that was lurking inside the roof vent beam... The Opel GT has a unique boot. No lid, peculiar water and air routing, etc. Some say that rear end is the worst rust trap in Opel GT.

Nice , aluminium frame and body. Modern independent suspension.powerfull v6. But don't change anything in the design. Don't you dream of that sometimes?
Before you would try to buy a rustfree opel gt from California. A finnish gt will be the best ,healthy one in the world!!
I wish you a good health and a lot of nerves to finish your project. Happy new year
Thank you so much for showing this! You leave me always with my mouth wide open - just amazing what you build there! To me pure art!

thank you again .
I watshed all of the the GT project, Amazing even better as new.
Sorry, i missed some months of your priceless work due to too much work. Had the opportunity to catch up with you in the last days. Your story is both captivating and deeply relaxing at the same time. You have developed tremendous skills in terms of storytelling. There is nothing to complain about anything. Absolute flawless Entertainment. True devotion to this mission impossible, which is the salvation of a rusty old GT. My deepest respect for your hard work. Chapeau !
The creativity, the determination, knowledge... Awesome. It WILL be worth it in the end. It is now significantly more a legendary vehicle, surviving the abuse of it's former life by TV producers. Brought back from the brink. I'm pretty sure no one will ever attempt a more challenging GT.
You deserve the performance upgrades.
This is next level amazing job
Thanks again
damn that mr rust !!!!
Love watching you work. Looks Amazing.
amazing workmanship !!!!!!
🤗❤️🎄🎅👍
Awesome job, truck on!
This car definitely needs bigger brakes. Original are just slowing down but you can't call that brakes. Good job man !
Hello I always enjoy watching it. I was a little curious, but I'm planning on replacing the engine with one with a larger displacement. Will the chassis strength be okay if I increase the output by replacing the engine? I feel that it is necessary to increase the aperture or increase the number of spot welds during restoration.
love your work ,what episode did you weld sunroof panel in ? i recently restored a 62 beetle i thought that was bad till i saw the opel gt !!!!
👍👍👍👍👍
This series of video motivated me to do a 4 door -> 2 door conversion on my 1976 Volvo 240 (long story) Now I'm 9 months in the process, bodywork is finished, onto sanding and painting
Hello, I truly and honestly want to hear the long story !!!!
@GT1900garage well I had a very rusty 242 (2 door car) and a rust free 4 door donor. Did the old cut and weld (first time welding on bodywork) Also did some rear wheel arch modifications
I admit to not adding comments to your videos - but they would just be totally redundant! “Great video! Excellent work! Fascinating job!” So just let me say, “These are the best restoration videos on TH-cam, and on a vehicle that is often overlooked!” Kind Regards!
Nice little car to work on!
Admire your perseverance!!
Cheers from Iloilo Philippines 👍 Always love your content. Keep up the good fight my man!
Your work is amazing , I love watching your progress! <3
These projects take WAY WAY WAY longer than expected. My Volvo 1800 is such a stupid design in that it has all these extremely difficult to get to areas far inside with peeling paint that I need to strip the paint and apply new paint to prevent rust .
Wow, that’s thin body, my Volvo 1800 has 1.9mm for structural parts , 1.2 mm for floors and inner sheet metal, and 0.9mm for outer skin. Mine too was welded with brass in a horrible low quality previous repair, and the worst repair was some scrap steel glued in with tar and covered in tar, inside wheel well.
...Rather large oval assemblage ... Also the most attractive when deployed, of any flip-up headlight. Or flip-over as the case may be.
Hi to be Honest, when you one day will be finished that GT, it will be much better than it was when it left factory, my first car was a Kadett B from 1972 and on that gaps on hood, doors etc. Wasn't lined up like you do, doors nearly fall down a half centimeters when opening it, when it got to much, we adjust it, what I could do every half year and it was new, basically your car is nearly the same, the quality wasn't that good in the 70th. But hopefully you can enjoy it for many years after you are finish, and you know it to every single bolt and washer, with over a 1000 hours work on the car, it becomes a part of you. Mary Christmas, thanks for all your videos to you and the GT, I vearly enjoy every single one, you are a bloody good inspiration to get over in the workshop and work on my own projects. Cheers
Apparently this German show drove it like a James Bond submarine. In salt water. Roger Moore in- Corrosion is Forever!
I have over 450 hours on rust repairs on my Pantera. I feel your pain!
Great to see the body coming together and adding the mechanical components. This is going to down as a legendary build. Awesome work. Thanks.
I love your passionate work!
Excellent series! I bought the second GT1900 into Springfield MA (gold) in 1969. Unfortunately, the dealer was less than honest. I didn’t know it , but the front end was stove in transit. Since they were dirtbags they slathered an inch of filler on it and sold it as new. To add insult to injury, at 500 miles I brought in for warranty work and they stove in the front end a second time! By the time there was 4500 miles on it, an alternator, air pump, shock absorbers (snapped), as well as various switches, etc. had been replaced. I lost 25% when I bailed on it 4 months after I bought it. All that said, it was, of the over 25 cars I’ve owned, one of the ones I liked the best. Just one data point, of course.
These videos will be learning tools for restorers of other examples of this wonderful little vehicle in the near and far future. They'll be able to assess the extent by way of the car colonoscopy demonstrated by this fellow, with the camera up through all this and that, and know what the parts are, and what they are "in for".
The prog rock at around eight minutes in, is in 7/8
Watch this magician fix the seemingly impossible...
Another great video! Where did you find the 4 seals that seal the 2 caliper halfs? Here in the states everyone recommends not spliting the calipers since we can't buy those seals. So i rebuild the calipers with them together. Which isn't horrible. Sam
Another great episode, you are doing wonderful work. Have a great Christmas and all the best for 2025!
Merry Christmas and a "rust free" New Year
What an absolute joy to watch your perfection ,filming and editing skills! Easily one of the very best restoration channels! Keep it up, we all support you💪 Merry Christmas to you and looking forward to more videos by you and your work.
Thank you so much for your great videos. They are entertaining informative and most of all educational. Your videos are probably the best on the car subject. You don't only make great job on the car, but you also have the patience to make great videos too! My best wishes for Christmas and the new year, my friend. Greetings from the southest sunny edge of Europe
Finally! My first christmas present! 👍Merry Christmas to you and your family! 🎄
