Absolutely fantastic job again. Another commenter has said this, but you are possibly THE most talented home restorer I have ever seen. It is well within your capabilities to finish the car to show quality yourself in your own garage. I have painted 3 full cars now at home, more or less a panel at a time. 2 of them, an Astra SRi Turbo and a MK3 Golf Gti have been to many shows and have stood up to the scrutiny of professionals. We still own the Astra, I sold the Golf 2 years ago to someone I still see, the cars were painted 7 and 6 years ago and still look good today. I'm sure it is the same in Finland, but a good paint job now in the UK costs £5000, I only got £1500 for the Golf, so economically, I had to do the work myself to make any sense at all. Paint materials and consumables are nowhere near as costly as some might have you believe. You have great skill, but above all, patience, which is the key element when it comes to re-finishing.
Thanks Bob for kind words. I think that the painting would most likely go ok, but the prep work for nice and smooth finishing is most likely out of my league...The shapes in this car is too complex to get it done well...On the other hand, straight surfaces are even more difficult... so you never know... And the price is really the issue here too....
@@GT1900garage I understand your apprehension regarding all the pre-paint work, but it soon comes good with some practice, just be prepared to have to do some panels more than once before they are good enough. Tack så mycket, alla gillar inte den här typen av musik, men jag tror att den passar de här videorna bra. Flera personer har bett om längre perioder, men dessa 20 minuter börjar bli det maximala som kan göras utöver hobbyn..
I am always waiting for your next video. I am stunned at the amount of talent you have. I am only envious. Are you going to have to re-bore the cylinders? My engine and transmission are still on the shop floor. Keep the faith on your Opel, you will soon own the most rust free Opel GT in the world. God Bless you.
Thanks for patience. This summer has been busy elsewhere, but hopefully now I have time and motivation to stay more in the garage. Most likely we are good with just a light honing. It seems that there is no need to re-bore the cylinders....hopefully next week we will do the closer inspection about the block and crankshaft bearings... if everything is ok...it is just a putting it back together...
Yes, that mockup scene was kind of intentionally done, sorry about that 😎... No, this GT will look as close to original as possible, few small modifications tho....
Thank you.. actually, this is my first car project of this magnitude.. I did my Mini 15 years ago, but that was nothing compared to this.. So this is documentation on my learning process.... thanks for comment tho, appreciated.
If I would be 25 years younger, turbo would be included. Now I look forward cruising on a curvy lakeside roads with this beauty. Power is adequate for this purpose...
You can substitute forged 1.9 rods for the weak cast 2.2 rods, they're dimensionally identical but lighter and stronger. And you can have a 1.9 block bored to 95mm and re-use the original pistons with new rings if you're not set on using the original 2.2 block. My lightly modified 2.2 is so much fun, just changed out the break-in oil and hope to hit the redline soon!
Thanks for the tip...However, I am looking for a better performance on low RPM, with better torque - and I want to keep the 1.9 original and as is... I'm sure that the engine swap will bring more characteristics to the car, and it'll be fun...
@GT1900garage I didn't mean to imply you would have to strip your 1.9 for parts. However, the 2.2 is very rev-happy, and with the stock cast rods 6000RPM is about the limit before they fly apart. A good set of rods from a 1.9 that's pre-1974 will be a direct bolt in and have no negative effect on torque. It will raise the effective redline however! I built my 2.2 with the forged rods and they press right in and work perfectly!
You say , ''It's ready for the professionals to finish this.'' well my friend, let me tell you that ''the professionals'' are going to get an easy one with this one since most of the preparation is ''professionally'' done.
NNNNNOOOOOO!! Too short!!!! Are you serious. A wheel arch from a Dodge Omni / Plymouth Horizon. What kind of people know these thing? Beautiful episode. The 2200cc will drop in without modifications to the chassis? Other summer time projects may keep you busy.............but you have 24 hours of daylight, what's the delay here? LOL Cheers from Canada
The Horizon thingy was a bit of a luck. I have a friend with endless knowledge and stock on old car stuff…the motor ‘should’ be ok to fit, drive shaft and gear lever is the only parts that need modifications…
I was impressed that this seems to be the quickest way to restore a fender arch! It's dangerous to push when loosening bolts/nuts ⚠️If there is space, I loosen them by pulling! What do you think? So there are mosquitoes! Are the spirals Japanese mosquito coils? I'm happy to have made a new discovery this time as well.
Thanks for the comment... Now thinking about it, I have never though which way I tend to open and close the bolts...Either way that is suitable I´d say, safety in mind however.. This June we had a few weeks with more mosquitoes than normally do, but not unbearable amount... I think the coils are universal product... Welcome to my channel, stay tuned for more episodes...
When does your new 2200 Tshirt update arrive?!? Get some more of that shop helper, it at least helps get garage time scheduled and set as a priority. Brilliant work, thanks for sharing!
Actually, quite many has asked about the t-shirt....maybe I will accept the offer for merchandise stuff 🤘😎🤘 I have a secret to reveal; the magic helper....i'ts fake !!!! (its me all along)
Thanks for the comment. No, it is just a simple Opel Record 2.2 engine with injection. More torque and about +30 horsepower. Nothing radical, just better driving experience imho
Great video again! That wheel arch is pretty sweet! I will have to remember that for my red 73 Gt that I am nose swapping. Also great job fixing that timing cover! Is the 2.2 going to be relatively stock or is getting hot rodded? Hopefully this winter I am going to build a 2.0L.
Thanks Sam To be honest, the arch turned out far better than I expected. No filler needed at this point… It will be stock 2.2E This will bring additional 25-30hp and it is enough for me. My plan is not to take her to track, but to curvy Finnish country roads…. Interested to see your 2liter upgrade…
Thank you for the video. Something just popped up on my mind, have you checked the height of your engine blocks? Back in the the day I think it was common to add to the stroke to increase the volume. I have seen this on other brands. It would be a shame if the valvecover got in contact with the hood.
Yes, the block is identical with 2.0E so it will fit... Also there are countless of similar modifications done...So I am pretty confident that this will go smoothly.. Only bigger modifications are the shortening (and balancing) of the drive shaft and modifying the gear lever setup.....
No niin on, kaveri joka tekee concours tason entisöintiä vinkkasi tästä. Helposti tasoittuva, hiottava, hitsauksen kestävä....jos ruosteen esto toimii yhtä hyvin kuin purkki lupaa niin oikeasti mun valinta sellaisiin paikkoihin joita hitsataan...Nyt laitoin öljypohjaan ihan vaan koska sattui purkki olemaan lähellä...Tuo käyttämäni teollisuus epoksi on myös hyvä maali, se tekee todella kovan mutta joustavan pinnan jota voi hioa, ja pienet hitsausjäljet saa peitettyä pohjamaalilla, niinkun noi kaaren hitsaukset...
Interesting that the block has 20 cast onto it, but it is a 2.2 on the engine number. Maybe they were using 2.0 blocks and stroking them to get 2.2/2.4 engines. If you can find a 2.4 rocker cover it should go even faster....
Two things: friend with endless knowledge of cars and massive stock of old car parts - and luck I copied the shape of the arch to cardboard and went to his garage. Then he had "one that comes to my mind" and it was almost a perfect fit. But still it was laborous task to make it mimic the other side shapes correctly...
I had iron sump on my GT. I did not know there was an aluminum one. I also remember that it was very close to the front axle. Is the front cover on the engine different between 1,9 and 2,2?
Hi Jonas, I have heard, that the aluminium one is originally for GT, but I am not an expert.. It will be close, that is for sure, but the steel sump is from the original engine, so it is proven to fit... Not sure what you mean by front cover? Do you mean the timing chain cover (the one I fixed in the episode) or valve cover?
@@GT1900garage I was thinking of the cracked timing chain cover. But I guess you already checked that they where different between 1900 and 2200 engine.
@Jonas_Aa Ok, to be honest, I am very noobie what comes to Opel engines, so I don't know. But I wanted to keep the original 1.9 intact, so loaning the timing cover would have required dismantling the original engine, so it was out of the question.
I worry about that wheel arch.... I once owned a Talbot Horizon, and they were made from such poor quality steel that it literally rusted away to dust in one year....you could almost hear it rusting.
Actually, the horizon panel was one of the few that was 1.0mm steel! Most of panels I tried was 0.8mm Still, I think this will be so fully submerged with epoxy, so it will last ages… Besides, this is not a Ferrari with pedigree, it’s Opel GT, the rustiest car ever😂😂😂
I have a friend with endless knowledge of cars and huge collections on 70-90s repair panels! Also some luck was involved. I copied the GT arch to cardboard and tried to find a match. Talbot Horizon was almost a 100% match !
I used to love American HotRod 😉 Epic video, how long does it take to edit your videos? Massive effort no doubt. Have you tried Bilthamber Deox C immersion rust remover ? It does a way better job than any media blaster and isn't expensive.
In early 2000, there were plenty of similar shows, but for us (in Nordic quiet and bit reserved culture), they were a bit too over acted and too drama oriented to be super popular…this videos opening was a bit of a parody of them😎But I binge watched them anyway for the cars😂. Hard to say how much it takes per video, since I edit daily after garage time….but hours and hours……
@@GT1900garage You deserve many more views in my opinion, the effort should be better rewarded. Some channels are very lazy by comparison but are getting similar views, it doesn't seem fair. One thing though, what you are creating I bet you will enjoy looking back at the videos in years to come. That won't necessarily be true for other creators. Funny you should mention Nordic, I was just looking at a holiday in Norway. 😄 I get what you're saying about the over acting, didn't spot it at the time but do now.
@@GT1900garage No problem. It was in relation to initial comment I made three days ago. However I do have a question. What vehicle did the 2200 cc come out of? Second question, Were the Opels built by GM America or GM Germany? PS I am deeply impressed by the no compromises approach to this build. I hope it yields the pleasure you are looking for.
Sorry, missed this reply : The 2.2 comes from 1985 Opel Record. I believe (not an Opel Expert), that the body of the GT was made in France in some specialized body factory, and assembly was done in Germany. As far as I understand, only branding was changed when shipped to US. To be honest, I don't know if this was sold in US only by brand Buick or was there a Opel GT available in US ? Someone with more knowledge could correct this ?

Tack så mycket, alla gillar inte den här typen av musik, men jag tror att den passar de här videorna bra. Flera personer har bett om längre perioder, men dessa 20 minuter börjar bli det maximala som kan göras utöver hobbyn..
Great Job
Thanks... nice 124 you have there...
I am always waiting for your next video. I am stunned at the amount of talent you have. I am only envious. Are you going to have to re-bore the cylinders? I am still working on getting mine ready to paint. Getting the rubber coating off the bottom. Don't have a rotisserie like you have, so I am a lot slower.
That's interesting how close those fender lips were, considering from vastly different cars from different manufacturers.
True...This was a bit of a luck that I found this one....And thanks to fried who "had a one fender in mind" in his vast stock of old car parts...
At one point I became very worried that you were planning to make big wheelarch extensions…thankfully not🙂
Yes, that mockup scene was kind of intentionally done, sorry about that 😎... No, this GT will look as close to original as possible, few small modifications tho....
Elegant og grundig jobb med bakskjermen - dette var imponerende utført. Jeg ser at det ligger mye erfaring bak alt dette
Thank you.. actually, this is my first car project of this magnitude.. I did my Mini 15 years ago, but that was nothing compared to this.. So this is documentation on my learning process.... thanks for comment tho, appreciated.
This is not rapair, this is art 🤩🤩🤩👋
Thanks Michael, appreciated.
There is an poor Opel GT for sale in Sweden for 2000 EUR, check Blocket if you need some parts. And thanks for the video, very nice work.
I am tempted to look it up, but I definitely should not 😂😂😂
@@GT1900garageI know the feeling. 😂
that's a really beefy engine! ideal for a turbo :D
@@MilkCrateGarage ok, thanks for the tip.. I’ll look into that bit more🧐
You say , ''It's ready for the professionals to finish this.'' well my friend, let me tell you that ''the professionals'' are going to get an easy one with this one since most of the preparation is ''professionally'' done.
Hope so...but with this much of a round shapes...the bodywork will be expensive anyway...
It’s nice Katorisennkou
Took some googling to understand....Yep, sometimes that is needed...
Actually, quite many has asked about the t-shirt....maybe I will accept the offer for merchandise stuff 🤘😎🤘
I have a secret to reveal; the magic helper....i'ts fake !!!! (its me all along)
A little transmission fluid or bar soap will help the files from not getting clogged with aluminum
Now thats a new tip...thanks !
very nice
Thank You !!
That Talbot Horizon looked like a copy of the American Dodge Omni, Plymouth Horizon.
Same car, same factory, just different market area naming….
Very Good job
Thanks, appreciated..
Welcome to the 2.2 GT club friend, it's lovely here! Are you going to install the Bosch EFI as well?
Thanks Mate ! That's the plan...
@GT1900garage If you have any questions, I don't mind answering. I'm running the Bosch LE2 EFI from a 1985 Opel Rekord.
😍😍
🤘😎🤘
Another great video. Is that a Cosworth Block? Here in the states that would have come from 2.2 or 2.3 Chevy Vega.
Thanks for the comment. No, it is just a simple Opel Record 2.2 engine with injection. More torque and about +30 horsepower. Nothing radical, just better driving experience imho
👍👍👍
💪💪💪
Great video again! That wheel arch is pretty sweet! I will have to remember that for my red 73 Gt that I am nose swapping. Also great job fixing that timing cover! Is the 2.2 going to be relatively stock or is getting hot rodded? Hopefully this winter I am going to build a 2.0L.
Thanks Sam
To be honest, the arch turned out far better than I expected. No filler needed at this point…
It will be stock 2.2E
This will bring additional 25-30hp and it is enough for me.
Wurth Rostop maali on loistava tuote!
Yes, the block is identical with 2.0, the extra 0,2 is done by increasing the stroke. Hence also better torque.
How did you figure out where to get the fender pieces? Awesome build
Two things: friend with endless knowledge of cars and massive stock of old car parts - and luck
I copied the shape of the arch to cardboard and went to his garage. Then he had "one that comes to my mind" and it was almost a perfect fit. But still it was laborous task to make it mimic the other side shapes correctly...
🤗❤️👍💯
Thanks again for watching and commenting !!
@@GT1900garage You are welcome 🤗 Your videos are very good quality and entertaining also 👏👏👏
I had iron sump on my GT.
Most of panels I tried was 0.8mm
Still, I think this will be so fully submerged with epoxy, so it will last ages…
Besides, this is not a Ferrari with pedigree, it’s Opel GT, the rustiest car ever😂😂😂
Outstanding. How did you determine the Omni fender would be a close match? It came out so nice!
I have a friend with endless knowledge of cars and huge collections on 70-90s repair panels! Also some luck was involved. I copied the GT arch to cardboard and tried to find a match. Talbot Horizon was almost a 100% match !
First like! 😊😊😊😊😊
@@Zgurkogel WooHoo
An engine from Rekord E 2.series, but the valve cover needs to be change for the GT.
@@holger5555 please see the rest of the video😂
hello there be shure that the iron sump will fitt i had clearing problems
The steel sump came from this GT, so it should fit
the aluminum one is spare one that I have bought separately… what kind of fitting issues you had?
@@GT1900garage hello goodevening if i remember right the sump hit the midelbeam it was a long time ago it was in the 80 it was a ascona engine
I get what you're saying about the over acting, didn't spot it at the time but do now.
Thanks mate, Norway is awesome place to visit! Enjoy your holiday
p.s. I am sure you could spray paint this car yourself, right there in the garage, it's really not that diffficult.
My “mentor” keep saying the same….but naaah….
What no V-8 ????
Nah, for me its like having Gin with Coke, or sauna without wooden stove...they just don't belong together...
Thanks for the comment though !
Edit: What kind of people know these things?
Context got lost for this comment...I hope you got the answer elsewhere 😎
Just me scrolling through the comments wondering if car nerds find the wheel arch thing brilliant or blasphemy.
Haha. My thoughts exactly !! I had a footage of the "ritual" for getting rid of the Talbot curse...but that was cut out from the final edit 🤣
Maybe it was a bit too much.
But yes; I kinda expected some opposing comments too 😅
I am sorry to be that guy, but a car that gets so much work put into it must have more than 4 pistons! 😁😘
Thanks, one wise person once said, "It not the issue whether you have Ryobi or Milwaukee, its what you do with it.."
I have always fell in love with the underdogs.....
