I stumbled on this renovation a short while ago. I had a 1975 1900 Manta with a Cologne motor and a fellow officer had an identical white GT to this one while in the armed forces at that time. I regret selling the Manta some years later still!!! There is a divine madness from those who care that put this amount of work into saving a car from the knackers yard. Well done - I'm sure the end product will be beautifull again!!!
@@GT1900garage The 1900 Cologne motor was the German Opel power plant as opposed to the engines fitted in the 1600cc sourced from the joint venture in the UK with GM/Vauxhall. As I understood it it was a relatively rare import into South Africa which was more reliable and powerful than the later 1900cc engines fitted from the GM stable.
@@user-ok3le4vh7c Engineeting wise the running gear geometry was also pretty special. The Manta had one vice: it stuck to the road with incredible grip untill it broke loose. After that all bets were off especially off-camber. 😂😂

Cancelling subscription because of music. Really? His loss definitely. You are correct, blasting by someone who knows what they are doing is not a problem, where I live in the UK, all the blasters who are any good have retired and not been replaced, it is very sad. As regards acid dipping, this is my humble opinion. Box sections that have not rusted out in 50 years are never going to, until you give them a coat of acid that is. Also, cost is astronomic in the UK as well. Your way is best.
Thanks for support. Well you cannot please everyone... And yes, I also agree about the cost efficiency of this stripping method AND the fact that old craftsmanship of many "old fashion" skills is a dying breed.
Nice work, i went this way so many times in the past. Nowadays I would perhaps go the route of chemical paint stripping and rust removal after mounting it on a stabilizing subframe. Thank you very much for the comment. Thanks for viewing the whole series !! As for your question, I was discouraged for one day, then I thought that it only makes my channel more interesting...soooo, I would say its a win-win situation....sort of...
Thanks for the comment...Nooo, it is very interesting... It would be bad if I have false expectations about the time the project consumes, but now I'm just curious about the overall figure...
Your work and filming is very impressive and oddly soothing to watch. Did you ever consider acid dipping, which would have been a lot less work than sandblasting?
Thanks for the comment...I tend to choose the music that reflect the mood of my work in all episodes, sometimes it is soothing, sometimes just agony 😂. Regarding your question : Two reasons, availability (locally) and cost.. End result is still the same...
Nice touch with R2D2 on the shelf in the background, lol. 450 hours in.... great work. I don't think I could keep unearthing rust and stay interested.. I admire your dedication and am really looking forward to seeing the project move along. I know the big reward is finally firing it up and taking it for a first drive..... seems a long way off. Just a curious thought; how many hours do you think (hope) you'll have in it when you finally get to take that first drive? Good work, keep it up!
The R2 was a whim of the moment when I saw box of my 1980 collection of SW toys in the top shelve. Thank you for great comment, I am really looking forward to get the GT up and running, but to be honest, I really like the process as well... I would estimate that 1500-2000 hours will be in the clock when I am ready. It is about the time that is counted for building your own family house !!!
Today I saw #16 and haven’t seen any other episodes. After finishing with episode 16# I wanted to know the history and watched all episodes. I got to give it to you, the devotion you have to restore this opel gt. You must be in love with this car because this car was actually to far gone and simply wasn’t worth restoring anymore. The amount of hours you have put in already and multiply it with a metal worker hour wage which is normally between the €50 and €80 an hour. But it is really nice to see this one saved, because I know these cars and they a beautiful little cars. I used to own a opel Manta type A from 1972. Opels do rust a lot from this era, actually also in the 80’s 90’s and 00. Are you planning to use the CIH engine or a c20xe? (I never liked the cih engines there power band is flat and they are really heavy) The seller said minimal body work? Wow that’s odd for a German normally they tend to tell the truth. Good luck with your restoration, I am subscribed now and will follow your work!
Thanks for comment, and hopefully becoming a regular viewer on my channel. Honestly, I had no other choice but to finish what I have started. After buying a car from Germany, and paying a lot to haul it to Finland (with 2022 prices), there was not an option to let it be and leave the project. I felt miserable for one weekend, when the truth revealed, but then I thought that this might be interesting youtube project to do...My niche is to revive the car from "beyond repairable" state back to its glory! But yes, I do love it now. It is just adorable, yet kind of aggressive looking little european sports car...Besides, one cannot count the labor as currency, when dealing with hobby. I would count this as 450hours quality time with my hobby . About the seller, I think that seller did not quite understood what he sold, but there was some indication that it was not 100% honest process either, so many sudden turns in the process.... Not sure about the engine yet....some ideas to spice it up a bit...lets see... Thank you for a subscription.
@@GT1900garage I think seeing all the little patches you find in the car and hidden trauma if the seller wasn’t the 1st owner he probably couldn’t know what was all wrong with the car. But you are right, this is a hobby project other wise you couldn’t do it. And looking at your work it’s going well. And afterwords you can say I literally rebuild this car with my own hands. And every panel had work done to it. I am guessing that 75% of the car is stil original and the rest is made by your hands. Its also nice seeing you are repairing the panels (and the right way) while most people would just replace the panel. Now I do remember that panels for the gt are very hard to come by. About the engine if you would go for the c20xe (which is a great engine) find the early one these have cillinder heads made by Cosworth and have bigger valves. The later ones have Kolbensmith cilinder heads. The gearbox you need to find one from the opel manta 1.8gs these will fit right to the c20xe and you have a working speedometer. Good luck 👍🏻🍀 keep up the good work :)
I might suggest, that any one who has so much time to make such video content, might have made a lot more progress in restoring the car, if they had not. As entertaining to watch as it may be.
Ah, so true... BUT This is part of this hobby that I have chosen and truly like both aspects. When I am bored with metal work, I can edit or invent new camera tricks, and vice versa... With the same logic; why would you paint oil to canvas, when you can take a picture. Why would compose music when you can just go to Spotify. Why would you build a car when you can just buy one...I just love the "making of" part of this
At 4 minutes in I would opt to have tge cavities inside coated with a rust protective inhibitors much like zbart or the protector plate back in the day .
Yep, they will. In the rear wheel bay, there are two maintenance holes at the end of the both sill cavity. They will be sprayed CRC rust gel (tar like substance) few weeks before spraying the complete car with industrial epoxy. Prior to that car will be VERY LIGHTLY sandblasted again...just to clean up before undercoating...
How much time and research to find a media blasting room, percentage of savings compared to dipping? Imagine time saved was in scheduling to meet your timeline. Sorry to see that cliffhanger look and the term “stuntman” 😱
I've discovered this channel recently, but have been fillowing the Retropower channel for longer. Those guys covered the reason for moving away from dipping, stating that dipping may neutralise rust, but doesnt replace rusted panels, additionally if the neutralisation isnt done propely the remaining acid will eat the remaining meyal aeay. This is from their rxperience.
The person who blasted, is a friend of mine. He did my Mini 14 years ago, and has a VERY long experience with cars. This was local, easy and cost efficient for me... And yes, the stunt has taken some on screen hits to the front and back ! Good old chasing scenes !!! New episode will reveal the end result of the blasting...
Thanks for the comment. This topic is actually quite well covered in more details in previous comments, but in short : This is purely matter of availability and pricing. I have access to local shop with very experienced operator, who has decades worth of experience with classic cars. Now that my GT is pretty much opened up, so every corner and pocket can be sandblasted, it was a best option to have. Another issue is the cost. Dipping would have cost me soooo much more...
VERY good question. As mentioned in several comment replies, This was about 1000% more work than the seller promised...But on the other hand, this would not be a TH-cam channel without the huge amount of work to be done. Does it have any sense? No ! But is it fun - Yes. So most likely I would buy the same car, but with a big discount !!
Jag vet inte. Jag försöker komma på det just nu. men bilen har ägts av ett film- och tv-produktionsbolag i Tyskland, och den tidigare ägaren sa att bilen var inblandad i produktioner
I had a friend who had a opel manta gt sold here in US in early 1970s through Buick GM motors great little car great on gas in those days of gas shortages!
Yes, I was about to do that right after dismantling the car, but it is so annoying task so I postponed it all the time.. I prefer heat gun, less fumes and easier to control temp...first fender I cut it with oscillating cutter....how stupid was that 🙄
Just noticed these replies...sorry for delay.. VERY NICE VIDEO about driving the ALfa, I really want to do similar when the GT is ready....Subscribed...
Thanks for the comment. Yes, it stretch and warps if done wrong. The "masterblaster" has 20+ years of experience in media blasting cars. All horror stories about sandblasting gone wrong, usually indicate lack of understanding and workmanship. Done with correct media, pressure, angle, distance etc makes the difference.
Thanks for the comment. Hmm..Could be, maybe not. It is not the pressure that counts, its the media/pressure flow ratio. Th guy adjusted the pressure and flow constantly, depending what part he was working on.. I'd say it is too much when it damages surface. But I am no expert, guy who did it is though..

@@GT1900garage Mainly cheap, low quality sheet steel imported from the Soviet Union. Someone told me the rust was already in the coils of steel on arrival.
Fiat had the exact same problem. VW also for a short while.
Маленький человечек прошёл незаметно по полке 👍👍👍👍
R2-D2 😂
15:08 wow this is a huge cabin, what do they normally treat there tanks ? Busses ?? Ships ???
Thanks for comment, normally big industrial machinery
Thanks👍🏾
Thanks to you, I'd say!!
Your work is absolutely amazing. These cars are special to me, my oldest brother had 3 of them. I enjoy your project series. Thank you for sharing. My only question is: How did you not get discouraged??!!
Thank you very much for the comment. Thanks for viewing the whole series !! As for your question, I was discouraged for one day, then I thought that it only makes my channel more interesting...soooo, I would say its a win-win situation....sort of...
Another awesome video ! But get rid of the timer, don't do that to yourself 😆
Siistii duunia 👍
Kiitos kommentista, kova yritys on ainakin...

Thanks for the comment...Art is in viewers eye, glad that you see it this way !!
(I never liked the cih engines there power band is flat and they are really heavy)
The seller said minimal body work?
BUT
This is part of this hobby that I have chosen and truly like both aspects. When I am bored with metal work, I can edit or invent new camera tricks, and vice versa... With the same logic; why would you paint oil to canvas, when you can take a picture. Why would compose music when you can just go to Spotify. Why would you build a car when you can just buy one...I just love the "making of" part of this
15:30 what's the songs name , who is this ? Awesome .

At 4 minutes in I would opt to have tge cavities inside coated with a rust protective inhibitors much like zbart or
the protector plate back in the day .
❤❤❤❤❤
🙏
Wouldn't dipping have been a better option to strip this vehicle?
Thanks for the comment. This topic is actually quite well covered in more details in previous comments, but in short : This is purely matter of availability and pricing. I have access to local shop with very experienced operator, who has decades worth of experience with classic cars. Now that my GT is pretty much opened up, so every corner and pocket can be sandblasted, it was a best option to have. Another issue is the cost. Dipping would have cost me soooo much more...
This is a $100K restoration. Holy toledo.
I must be rich then, wait...no.... Thanks for the comment, can I quote that when applying a full value insurance ?
Would you buy the same condition of a car again?
VERY good question. As mentioned in several comment replies, This was about 1000% more work than the seller promised...But on the other hand, this would not be a TH-cam channel without the huge amount of work to be done. Does it have any sense? No ! But is it fun - Yes. So most likely I would buy the same car, but with a big discount !!
👍👏👏👏💯
🙏
Vilken film har bilen varit med i. :)
Jag vet inte. Jag försöker komma på det just nu. men bilen har ägts av ett film- och tv-produktionsbolag i Tyskland, och den tidigare ägaren sa att bilen var inblandad i produktioner
I wonder if alkaline and acid dip would have cleaned it better and easier it might have cost too much though
Thanks for comment, Yes maybe it would have been better, but two reasons. Price and local availability. I'm happy with the end result...
Awesome opel gt!
I had a friend who had a opel manta gt sold here in US in early 1970s through Buick GM motors great little car great on gas in those days of gas shortages!
5:08 😅 i see it 🤖
Easter egg, found a box full of my 80´s StarWars toys, and just had to do it...
It seems to me that only the paint held that car together. Just keep on.
Thanks for comment. Well, not that far off....luckily there was some solid metal left.. next episode will reveal how close it was to collapse 😂
I can't wait
I keep yell Dry Ice the Under Coating and it shatters.
Yes, I have heard and seen that too.. Heat gun is just way more accessible.
If you want to skip all the other stuff and actually see what the title says then just go to the last 30secs.
So true, sorry about that..
5:08 R2D2 😂
Hah, the whim of the moment when I saw box of my 1980 collection of SW toys in the top shelve.
TIL at 15:00 the Finns sandblast like they mean it.
Hah, agree ! With precision and skills, alongside heavy metal power 🤘
🤘@@GT1900garage
12:13 retropower uncut does it before anything but they use f‘ing gastorches for it !!!
Yes, I was about to do that right after dismantling the car, but it is so annoying task so I postponed it all the time.. I prefer heat gun, less fumes and easier to control temp...first fender I cut it with oscillating cutter....how stupid was that 🙄
I saw it, I saw it........ R2-D2
Ha, it was a spur of the moment when I found a box of old Star Wars toys on the top shelf..

Just noticed these replies...sorry for delay.. VERY NICE VIDEO about driving the ALfa, I really want to do similar when the GT is ready....Subscribed...
No not sandblasting please! It will warp the car!
Why don’t you do paint remover and acid?
Thanks for the comment. Yes, it stretch and warps if done wrong. The "masterblaster" has 20+ years of experience in media blasting cars. All horror stories about sandblasting gone wrong, usually indicate lack of understanding and workmanship. Done with correct media, pressure, angle, distance etc makes the difference.
Algorithmus Algorithmus Algorithmus Algorithmus Algorithmus Algorithmus
Thanks for the spell, hope it helps !!!
Way to much air pressure while blasting
Thanks for the comment. Hmm..Could be, maybe not. It is not the pressure that counts, its the media/pressure flow ratio. Th guy adjusted the pressure and flow constantly, depending what part he was working on.. I'd say it is too much when it damages surface. But I am no expert, guy who did it is though..
Great great and long job, very interesting for some tools that i can use for my restoration. 👍🏻
Thanks for the comment and cool if you find some tips for your own work. Some impressive array of vehicles you have in your garage.
@@GT1900garage that’s right, i have a lot of vehicles😅, twelve! Thanks for sharing your job, it help me a lot for my Ford Transit Mk2. I’m French by the way, and you?
This project is in Finland !!
@@GT1900garage ok well I greet you warmly from France 🇫🇷. And if it can reassure you, the Opel GTs are as rusty as yours here😅
