- Car was media blasted, and several surprises emerged. Biggest disappointment was a nose panel that was pretty much shaped using body filler... It took 20 hours to hammer the shape back ...
My project is a 1971 but Corvette convertible (Bird cage swap). I could relate to the immense amount of work into every hour you posted as I have to do the same (ungluing panels, then fiberglass them, then re-install. We are brothers in suffering. Keep working, when in Puerto Rico in the Caribbean pay me a call. There is always the chance to share thoughts and a cold drink,
My next dream project would be Lotus Esprit S1 or S2, also fiberglass body.. Do you have any account with photos of the work you've done? I will definitely look forward to have a drink !!

I'm a big fan of your work, you straighten everything to such a point that your car will be authentical, It's always better to work with the real car than new parts. I also like how you weld your parcels together, always adding more stifness where needed. Your car will certainly not need a lot of filler. Congratulations for your hard work and keep your faith.

A customer brought me one of these in for restauration a few years back. After having the car dipped we found it was actually made up out of three different cars uncleanley welded together. Someone must have loved that car, going to that leangth to keep it going. It came out fine.
Yes, you only see the complete truth only when it is in bare metal. About dodgy repairs, one viewer on this channel commented : even the bad repairs sometimes prevents the car being scrapped.... that is true. I hope this car will have awesome next 50+ years.

A nice worked up twin cam 2.0l 16V with a couple of Webber side draft and a 5 speed box would match the look of this sweet ride!
To be honest, not sure yet...I think I need to pay more attention to the power mill this winter...Somewhat spiced up for sure, just not sure what it is.....

Thanks for the comment, Actually this was fully expected, only disappointment was the nose cone....that's why I tackled it immediately...Rest of the damage was already foreseen and expected...So no major nervous breakdown experienced 😂
First class work again. Definitely the right time for blasting, you can now see what you have to do, daunting though that may be. Split it into lots of small jobs, you'll get there. Bonnet hinge mod. is brilliant.
Yes, My original plan was to immediately blast is after dismantling, but car was way too fragile for that.. Now was the perfect time for this...And Yes, I thought the bonnet hinge was a bit too flimsy, so I decided to improve it a bit...

Oh dear, what an incredible job. Mine is also 1971, my father bought it second hand in 74 and I plan a big restoration but hope it will be much less than your rebuilt. Your vids gave me lot of tricks and knowledge of how these beautiful cars are made: a very big thank and many claps 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. I'm really Looking for the finished car🤟🏻

When you watch a sequence of videos like this, you realize that, with a classic car like this, unless you are going to sell it for $100,000 dollars, nobody would put that kind of man hours or money into it. They would just crush it into a cube. But having done all of this work, the final product would be a complete labor of love. We don't do it for the money. We do it for the love.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, this is not my daily job, it is my hobby. Same with painting with oil colors, or composing music - not because expected revenue, but for pure joy. And with playing golf, not because you expect to be a pro millionaire golfer, but because you love it.. Or hunter, not to expect huge revenues for the meat sales, but because you love being in the nature...List is endless. There is no logical reasoning for spending 500+ hours for a car that is worth 20000€ when ready....it is just a hobby...
I have been following this project since you started and I am impressed with your skills. I mostly do Fords but the Opel GT has always been one of my favorite European cars, so a channel that features both amazing craftsmanship and a beautiful car is a winner for me. And about the music, it is what it is but Finnish rock would have been a winner. Thank you for sharing. Best regards from Norway

About the music, Yes, I think I have ran out the decent songs in the TH-cam audio library, maybe it is time to take next step with that also 😂 I am into Melodic Deathmetal, but I would assume that some more conservative steps should be taken here...🤘

How many accidents did this car endure...? Everything is rumpled, crunched, banged and Bondo'ed. And then painted purple over and under rusted and even some fiberglass like a boat. But what a beauty...
Plenty ! But this car was used more than a decade in German TV and movie industry as a prop car. Who knows how many dents it had during that time. Technically car was in very good shape, engine oil, coolant, brake fluids, services done...but the body was painted over and over again...with quick and dirty fixes...So on the other hand, car has a unique history, but at the same time it was somewhat neglected and abandoned from well deserved TLC....

Ahhh! Finding The Culprit. Moments like that make you question why you attempt to keep a schedule, organize, and plan. Very good work. The wood and clamps? Brilliant. Improving the hinge. Another Culprit. You ever have a body dipped?

Yes, sometimes I need to be innovative with my own methods, since I have no experience with the body work like that...Schedule is in my mind, but I have to say it is not very aggressive, so no pressure from that...The dipping is very expensive compared to blasting...that was the main point for choosing blasting. And it was just a 5 minutes drive away..That's another reason.. This is my second car that I do, so no first hand experiences from dipping....
Wow this car was a basket case, you couldn't find a worse rusty example to work on. You have lots of patience good job.
Yes, I was not lucky in the "buy a 50 years old classic from abroad" lottery, but hey - it is my niche now. I salvage a classic beauty from being end up as a material for Chinese toaster.

I've got a new Job ca. 2005. My boss had two totally stripped GT's in the Garage ! He had not the time to work in it. Later i had the chance to buy both, but i had not the money and space enough. I gave the advice to him to built one ready, and he found someone who made it - for the price of one of both cars for him. And he did it, the car ( in blue ) was ready - with black parts, there were no chrome parts avaible. Later there was an issue with the carburetor which was never fixed, he sold the car. But the model is one of my favorite Dream Car. Like ! Greetz from Germany 🇩🇪

More great work!! Nice solution for the front hood hinge to transfer the load into the vertical panels at the side. It is amazing how much bodge work you are having to repair on this car in addition to the rust.
Yes, the hinge is rather flimsy in its original shape, and now the thin crossmember was compromised by cutting, so I decided to give some additional support with external bracket...It's not original, but hopefully works ok..
20 hrs, holy hell, that's a big job...must be satisfying in the end though. That's going to be one beautiful car...love this series...keep em coming!
Well, there is alway big portion of "i wonder what should I do now" time included...but to be honest, i did not realize how bad it was before started working on it. Metal was all good, only the shape was missing..

Something you may want to get or make. Wooden mallets. Wood can really move metal. You can buy plastic versions but they don’t really work. Oak seems to work well.
Remember that all primers are sponges. Etching primers are required to have paint on them after they flash off before you put on filler. The paint seals the primer and is a good base for filler.

And yes, the reason I primed the the top seam was the somewhat difficult access to that later with spray. Car will be full primed with 2K industrial primer. This area will be painted several times..

When I'm finished, I WILL count exactly how much new metal I have put into the car. I have EVERY SINGLE piece of cut metal (no matter how small) saved...I will weight them, and then Im gonna weight the body when finished. I'd say that it is between 10-15% of the weight...I'm truly interested to see the result myself....

The blasting revealed so many holes and dents, i could understand if you just put the whole project on hold.

Yes, this is never worth the hours spent in terms of money. But same thing with a hobby painter or composer. You would never have millions from your work, but still love the process of creating.....

Yes, there are plenty of tools available, I do have a logic that when I need a tool more than three times, I may buy it...Otherwise I try to cope with what ever tools I have...But I have extended my sheet metal tool collection, since this is my first true restoration, and second car overall...Now the threshold for starting the next one is lower...

People that says it only needs brakes, is often clueless, or straight up lying!
When I bought my Capri they said is good. Well if the gooie rack bushes is more like caramello after been soaked in engine oil, which in turns make the steering rack move to side to side while turning is one of the minor problems, well they have no clue. My 1000km drive home the good tires turned to slicks by the time I got it home. To make it worse, they used no anti freeze so it rapidly developed water leaks. The poor body kit had to go and when doing so the whole bottom rear quarter panel was rusted away, new wheelarch was laid on top of the rusted orginal one, front of sills where made intirely out of foam, and the sills front half was also filled with foam. When I pulled the car apart the rust patches were worse than the damage. There was no sign of rust elsewhere on the car, only those areas where they had done the "repair". My guess will be the two former owners only filled petrol and water and that's it. After rumors the first owner did the repair job and added they styling before it was painted. Now it is fully welded and painted and waiting for me to put it back together.

I was going to Germany personally to check the car, but unfortunately got sick just days before flight, so I had no other option but to buy this based on photos and seller description. But the thing is, that car looked rather good, so I would have accepted it anyway, so no regrets in that sense. But usually, more tuned the car is, more hidden secrets it has...BTW: Capri was the other wow factor car for me in early 80's....

Also I am not running it with the cars own ignition, because there is a short somewhere that I still have to find.

Yes, they are quite flimsy, even if they have never been bent. Now that they have been bent once, they are perhaps more prone to being bent again. That's why I modified them, and the new bracket....

So, so impressed -- cannot believe how rough this car was. Wish you were putting these same hours and skills into a Ferrari so that you'd have a shot at getting some kind of return on your time investment, but regardless, amazing work and even more amazing focus and motivation!!

There should be plenty of offering? In Finland it is difficult. Pretty much all classics are either already done = expensive, or shipped to Germany. The transportation company commented, that is first time for ages that he does shipping from Germany to Finland, usually it is other way around. Hope you find your Manta. @@GT1900garage indeed, but it was just an hour drive from where I live. I had an appointment to go and look but canceled because of lack of time. Than later he send me “sold” than I felt I missed an opportunity. For manta type A I would have loved to have the small block of buick in it also made by rover. The Opel gt and mantas where sold in the USA by Buick dealership if I am not mistaken. But just dreaming out loud. You are realizing your dream and are doing it well.
Keep looking, and when you find it...make it a YT channel, believe me - it is a motivation boos for sure...

Amazing work. This body is in my eyes not worth restoring. Too much work replacing rusted sections and redoing old repairs. Not sure I have understood the motivation behind undertaking such a huge job.
Simple, aftey paying the gar to the seller, paying the transportation over the sea, after spending tens of hours of renovating it to the point....not going to ditch the project...😅

Thanks for the comment. Two reasons: availability and cost. This was 5min drive from my home, and cost peanuts compared to dipping.

Two reasons, availability and cost. This was available in 5 minute drive and cost peanuts.

Thanks for the comment. Well technically yes, but I think that at least partially the seller did not know the actual condition of the car. On the other hand, some visual indication was quite obvious, so....But I got way more interesting TH-cam channel out of it 😂

Ouch,, you should have acid dipped it.
I can see that it is blasted with very abrasive material, this often creates problem with huge dents.
It´s like 'peening' the surface, and by that stretches the material.
Thanks for comment, this topic was discussed in last episode comments. When you have expert doing the job, it is ok. That big dent was filled with bondo and was caused (i assume) by terrible fixes done to hood hinges. Plus chemical dipping would have more than doubled my whole budget with the project...not available locally. Plus, low mass media practically does not harm metal. I would not recommend it to delecate aeroplanes, but in practice it has no effect to the sheet metal....
@@GT1900garage I´m talking from own experiance, several years ago a local blasting shop blasted an Ascona i owned, and they were also well spoken for.
I had huge problems afterworth shaping it back.
Under carriage is ok, but never any big panels.
Especially when it is a lot of bondo, creates a lot of heat.
Yes, totally agree. I also have a friend that got his kleinbus destryed by too intence blasting. Here the only dent was the nose top and we discussed during blasting that should we continue blasting here, and since there was a about 5mm dent already filled with bondo, we decided to continue till we meet paint. Hence orange paint. So it might be that dent got slightly deeper but it was dented already. And I actually realized now, that I should have fixed the deformed front lip first, since that reshaping already could have plunged the top panel back up... now I fixed the dent first....damn...
@@Patricks_Projects There is very little heat in blasting, feel the panel after blasting, it will be lukewarm, how can that be enough to distort ? it gets way hotter on a sunny day but doesn't distort. The distortion is caused by media impacting the surface, it stretches the metal just like a hammer and dolly. The bigger the media and the harder it impacts the more it stretches.
