All about Nikasil- How & Why- Kevin Kinrade of Mongoose Machine
Kevin Kinrade was a major part of Mongoose Machine in Vancouver until 2021. Mongoose was the only place in Western Canada that offered Nikasil plating services & Kevin's father was one of the first in North America to offer the service.
In this conversation we talk about the process of re-plating a nikasil cylinder, different ways people can maintain their cylinders at home and then we got off the rails and talked about the nuts & bolts of the dirt bike business.
Mongoose carries a wide variety of parts like Rekluse, ProX, Innteck, SKF, Wiseco and lots more. Visit them online at www.mongooseparts.com or give them a call to talk to some of the most competent humans in the industry.

    You're a life saver Chuck. Putting an 18-23 cylinder on a 19 and I was really confused about z-height adjustment because of the lack of stopper.

    What do you do if the stream is fat and low pressure?

    • @ChuckfromTrueTech

      Gotta find out what’s causing the low pressure. Sometimes it’s a clogged pickup screen or a missing jet or a worn pump rotor or gear.

    Hey Chuck, I'm moving into a new house and looking to setup a nice workbench area in my garage. I'd love to see a video of your shop, and listen to you talk about what makes a good efficient layout, how much counter space you need, etc. I feel like you have a ton of valuable experience to share with the rest of us here. Thanks!

    You are not the only one to notice the ring difference. I have done less than 100 top ends over the years but it went from never filing rings to always the last few years. And this is on older Japanese 2 strokes.

    I'm doing a XR200 with that setup right now. All the rubber on the manifolds and stuff just fell apart when I tried to take it apart. I'm now building an intake manifold and have a shinny new Lectron carb for it. From super complicated to super simple (no jetts!!!) Should be interesting.

    St. Pierre Moteur in Qc is the other plating company, I've used them, seemed like a great company. They gave me a Purolator account number, so I could send my cylinder in, and they charge roughly $450 for a 300 KTM, they also offered a piston which needs to be matched to the cylinder plating. In the future I would maybe just let them sell me the piston they offered. The only downside I saw to this whole procedure is they want you to put your CC information on a sheet you fill out and send with the cylinder.

    Love these discussions and all of your content. I hope you’re aware of how refreshing it is to have someone in the field that is willing to share and teach without any layer of curmudgeonry. I used to enjoy the character of the curmudgeon in media such as Car Talk with Click and Clack, but I’ve found the real world curmudgeon’s to be less entertaining and often lack the core of curiosity and caring that I assumed was required to build and maintain relationships and knowledge towards what we’re trying to accomplish. You’ve helped me fast track so many plans and methods that I’m implementing in my shop. I really can’t thank you enough!

    Riding singletrack/hard enduro recreationally here in upper Michigan we get 200 to 300 hours on our 300 2t,s no problem.I replaced the top end on my 21 beta RR at 172 hours(new brand to me so I was curious).It was a waste of money as it was almost like new( but I feel better lol).Our super tight trails and almost never wfo definitely makes a difference to making a longer string.When I raced heavy on yz 250,s 100 hours was needed to avoid a boom.My pistons always came out nice but I was afraid of a piston being fatigued and breaking as bike was seeing enduro to mx racing (A class for many years).My last bike was a 2015 sx250 with 300 kit fully converted to offroad.3 pistons in 600 hours(from conversion )and stock crank(KTM 2t,s have awesome cranks if you keep a clean filter).

    RPM, Air filter cleanliness and oil changes are to me the three biggest factors. If your on a 4 stroke and bounce off the rev limiter all day at the track your bike wears out WAY faster then a dude just off idle all day in the woods. Dirty air and oil kills motors.

  • @jjse79
    @jjse79 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Ok, that makes sense, now you have two 250cc motorcycles for the same type of use (motocross, or enduro for example), one is 2 stroke and the other one is a 4st, they can actually be from the same maker, lets say ktm. The same pilot uses both, which one wears out first?

    • @ChuckfromTrueTech
      @ChuckfromTrueTech 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      On a modern bike it’s likely very similar. The 250 4 stroke revs much higher than the 2 stroke and makes less power. It has to be ridden higher in the RPM to do the same work as a 2 stroke.

    • @ChuckfromTrueTech
      @ChuckfromTrueTech 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don’t really measure them. It’s easy to see when they’re worn if you know what to look for and when you’re re-cutting them it’s also easy to tell what needs to be done by using a bit of sharpie on the seat.

    • @rotorhead5000
      @rotorhead5000 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If it were something that wasn't likely to take a hit again, the hot staple stitch would be a good and decent looking fix. If it's something like this that is going to get damaged again, the hack looking fix that's re-workable on the trail sounds like the smart move. Most of my WR's plastics are ziptie stitched, because I know it's a when not an if I break it again
