Lagavulin 16Yo S5E30
Tonight the #TBWD guys go to the Islay Region and review the Lagavulin 16yo Single Malt Scotch Whisky released at 43%. This Scotch Whisky from Lagavulin really shows and reminds Colin and Malcolm how gentle and yet intense an Islay Whisky can be. With maritime notes all over the place, not dominated by peat, yet with sweet influences; this Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Lagavulin does not disappoint, or even come close to that. Delicious! Cheers!

Tonight on #TBWD the Old Pulteney 18yo Single Malt Scotch Whisky released at 46% ABV from the Highland Region is opened and reviewed. Great video. Very interesting that you found an older bottle. It would have been neat for you to try a side-by-side comparison of a newer version. I have had a couple of bottles of the GF12 and I do not remember much as far as any notes but just remember it was enjoyable. Not as good as the 15Y but better than the 14Y which I believe was aged in ex bourbon casks. I do not remember getting any smoke on the pallet but it has been a few years and was before I drank anything neat and only had it on the rocks so that might have diluted it enough so that I did not get it. I am fairly new to whiskey tasting and I am curious on why you put the toppers on it. You are one of the few I have seen do it.

    • @TBWD
      @TBWD 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We thought about a side by side, but there is not a current Glenfiddich 12yo open in the bar.....it is time for a few side by sides!! As to why we put tops on...if you notice the tops do not fit perfectly...they are designed to trap aromas as they develop in the glass but to also allow a small flow of air in and out to further allow the whisky to develop prior to nosing and tasting.

  • @phillipwallace7211
    @phillipwallace7211 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Robust is the last adjective I would use to describe todays bottlings of Glenfiddich. I think it could be a case of the the market demand diluting the quality of the finished product.

    WOW! Are there any distilleries that currently produce an expression of yesteryear? I think it would be very hard, since the barrels would be different, maybe the barley is different. Who knows, but it would be interesting if some distillery tried. Cheers!

    • @TBWD
      @TBWD 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Many distilleries would say they use the same production techniques...except that floor maltings done in house are rare now, and though many still use the traditional water supplies, computers have made there way into the stillhouses and play a role in determining when whisky is 'ready', rather that the art it used to be...in some places it is becoming a science. Finally, a further point to consider is the change in Barley over the years from heirloom strains to modern strains...all affect flavor...or so say the experts! Me, I just drink the stuff, but can say that I've had excellent whisky from the era of art and the era of science. Cheers!

      Hmmm? I just watched this again....nothing dropped in before nosing...we remove the glass tops that have been collecting the aromas after the pour.

    Outstanding as always guys. I like port a cask finish a little more than sherry cask so yet another bottle added to my list to look for. Thank you and keep up the great work. Cheers...

    My favorite Port Cask ever was a Springbank with full port maturation, second place would be Kavlan Solist Port Cask... The old label Quinta Ruban is my favorite Glenmorangie, but have outgrown the distillery and have not tried the new one.

      Currently, my favorite Port cask is the Spey Tenne Tawny Port. I hear you on Glenmo; I'm really considering one of their high end bottles (of course the Signet remains very highly thought of around here) to see what that experience is like, but my wallet keeps asking me to reconsider. Cheers!

    I do enjoy watching y'all explore these whiskys. I have only had the 14, which was my first scotch ever. I found it to be exceedingly pleasant and encouraged me to try more scotch whiskys. Thanks Colin and Malcolm.

      As the SMSW journey continues the palate expands...it's no longer just a smoky burning experience; but now pleasant with such a range of experiences, we fear we may never complete the journey. Until then, we'll try until we die. Cheers mate!

      I'm not sure I want the journey to end. Isn't the enjoyment of the journey, with all of the twists and turns, gives one excitement of the unknown or the somewhat familiar. For without the journey, where would we go.

    Another fabulous episode… Malcolm needs to start taking notes… 😅 The 14 QR is an excellent dram, and probably the best value in the Glenmo Core Range, in my opinion. Add several drops of it to a dram of Allardice and you will encounter an amazing - and otherwise highly priced by others - blended dram. The Glenmo 10 is now going to 12, and the Nectar D’Or is going to 16. A couple other age upgrades are expected. I guess they are seating on a lot of liquid, bad for cash flow, hopefully good for us fans.

      Oi! thanks for the info on Glenmo's upcoming shift in the core range...my wife really enjoys the 10yo; need to stock up! We also, at times, experiment with 'homemade' blends...and of course there's always the infinity bottle; though I keep finishing mine; it's known as the 'finity' bottle. Cheers!

    When I think of port I think of Arran and Balvenie, but Glenmoranigie Quinta is a fine pour. Especially the 12 year I haven’t tried the 14 yet

      Yes! the Balvenie 21yo Port is excellent, though now quite pricey!! For me the 12 is slightly more oily than the 14. Cheers!

    Nice review! I just got myself a bottle of this one. My wife bought in Germany. I'm really looking forward to try it again. I've had 2 bottles before, Batch 1 from 2010 and batch 8 from 2014. I think it was in 2018 that they change from "Batch" to "Limited Edition". It's a mix of peated (40ppm) and unpeated ex-bourbon barrels and ex oloroso sherry casks and it's often a bit higher ratio of the sherry casks, all according to the distillery. I've had quite a few different Bunnahabhain over the years, never disapointed, so far. Cheers

    While in a visit to Portugal, our guide took us to an unscheduled spot to a grove of cork trees (Quercus suber). It was quite a sight. It is good to know that the cork is harvested every nine years as to not harm the trees. Cheers!
