Into the Wild got this part right... Lessons from guiding hikers
At first sight... hiking alone and silent hiking seem to be popular. But many years of guiding hikers and teaching mountain skills courses has shown me that even the biggest introverts rarely want to go out alone. Not because of risk, not because it's lonely, but because most of us prefer to share an experience with others. In essence, we are very social beings.
If you’ve seen or read Into The Wild, you’ll agree that when it comes to skills, Christopher’s story is about what not to do. But when he came close to death, he learned what I learned.
Isn’t it strange how the things you’re most passionate about end up disappointing you the most? Well that’s a bit grim isn’t it. Let’s say… it’s like the age old cliché. You can’t always get what you want, but sometimes, you get what you need.
I thought I wanted to create skilled self confident multiday hikers. Instead of guiding low threshold mainstream treks, I wanted to share what had taken me years to learn. So I went all in.
Summer after summer I took people out into the mountains to teach them how to read the ground, how to navigate without the help of trails or gps, how to maintain themselves, how to judge rivers and cross them safely, how to use ropes to cross difficult terrain, how to plan a day and eventually a sequence of days to make the best of what they wanted to do. To no longer need to rely on guides or mass marketing travel agencies.
Something strange happened.
People came and they were always grateful. They learned what I was teaching and demonstrated that they were capable of applying their new skills. At least, as long as I was there to ask them to. And afterwards… not really. I saw them join more guided trips. Many of them even came back to join me on adventures in multiple countries. We discovered friendships and bonded over sharing the joy we found in our journeys.
While I thought I wanted to create a lot of new solo adventurers. And while a healthy set of basic skills certainly help. It turns out that what most of us are looking for, is to share the experiences we are passionate about. If you’ve seen or read Into The Wild, you’ll agree that when it comes to skills, Christopher’s story is about what not to do. But when he came close to death, he learned what I learned. Often, when it comes to what we’re passionate about, "happiness is only real when shared".

Why would you film yourself "hiking alone"?
มุมมอง 2.7Kปีที่แล้ว
Why would anyone want to film themselves while hiking? Must be vanity right? Or the millionth wannabe Craig Adams? Well the reasons are often much more diverse or much more simple. I personally like to go out on short timelapse photography missions. A little bit of exploring, a bit of enjoying the mountains or the great outdoors. The photography mission is an extra reason to get me out the door...
Chasing a mountainbike dream
มุมมอง 759ปีที่แล้ว
It all started with this photo. Year after year, this exact view kept appearing in my social feed. The culprit? Greg, a mountainbike guide in the French Alps. More specifically the wild areas around Briançon and the Queyras. When I first bought a mountain bike about 10 years ago, I quickly realised cross country marathons wasn't what I was dreaming of when thinking about mountain biking. I mean...

Very good video thank u
Doesnt work
I'm hesitating between those 2, thanks for the video 🙂 I need a visor on the helmet to protect my eyes from the bright sun. I know that Tectal's visor is adjustable but how "down" can it go?(I miss my cap that I could put in a very downward position when the sun is just above the horizon at dusk with its blinding light but a helmet is definitely more secure than a cap). Last question: Do these helmets have removable visor (for winter for instance)? Thanks
lovely vid
January 2025 and worked but not with the link in description, seems its has been removed the download, but searching on google and going to the first link worked to me (its a uptodown link) Thanks so much!
Thanks for the information
thank you really helped me understand the SD Card and what to buy for my needs. Thanks.
Can you give the equivalent (in term of insulation, wind breaker and breathability) of this jacket in other brand like patagonia, rab,... ?
How many hours to reach view point?
I,have a,mountain wildlife trip where need to walk 1 to 3km max.. and i have got mt900 with 800 cuin filling new one.. is this enough to keep me in MINUS 20 TO MINUS 25 COLD?
@@grajesh83 that's pretty unlikely. Make sure you have other quality layers as well.

Just bought mt 500 blue from a yard sale for less than a doller can't wait to put ig to test
@@Shothor9 great bargain!
Thanks for an excellent summary!
what an awesome video! super explanatory and helpful!! thank you
Very well done. Thank you.
i also want Garmin Basecamp back - i need the Trip Planning tool and I have not found on alternative at all. Basecamp has bugs - yes - but the sum of all features is still way better then everything that is promoted on the internet.
Ty for nothing
Wow, thanks, it actually works! I had the problem with "media offline" in Resolve with my Nikon Z8 10bit H265 files. I am on windows 10, just follow the steps in the guide link under the video.
Man You are Gold 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍
None of the "fixes" offered have solved this problem for me. DaVinci created a video. Now suddenly the clip is "offline" although it is clearly on disk and available.
as a visual learner this is HUGE thank you so much!
I just paid the £0.79p..... F U Microsoft! Thanks Dieter was looking for ages!!!
Hey Dieter, I downloaded and installed the bundle.I also did a reboot twice but I doesn't work.. What are the options?
FINALLY!!! I have seen so many videos trying to fix this problem and none of them worked for me until I found your video. Lots of thanks. 🤝
Hey, can you send the link?
I used Garmin Basecamp when I went for a 4WD trip (I have problems walking) through South Africa and Botswana , planned it all myself with Garmin Basecamp ..absolute fantastic . And I am so glad I could open Basecamp on my new Mac mini 2023. We just need an updated version ....
Let’s cut through the nonsense: tech media isn’t just complicit in this exploitation-it’s actively enabling it. These so-called "reviewers" aren’t journalists; they’re corporate mouthpieces, too spineless or too greedy to call out the blatant profiteering that’s stripping consumers of choice. They’re bought and paid for, plain and simple, and the entire system reeks of corruption disguised as “innovation coverage.” Think about it. Most tech outlets rely heavily on ad revenue from the very companies they’re supposed to critique. In 2024, Apple, Samsung, and Google spent billions on advertising, with estimates showing Apple alone allocating $2.5 billion annually on marketing. These dollars keep the lights on at tech blogs and TH-cam channels, which then churn out glowing reviews that conveniently align with their advertisers' interests. You think it’s a coincidence that these reviews barely mention the downsides of removing the headphone jack or SD card slots? It’s not oversight-it’s strategic silence. Then there’s the affiliate marketing racket. These sites don’t just survive on ads; they rake in millions from affiliate links tied to the very products they "review." When they tell you that some $300 pair of wireless earbuds is a "must-have," it’s not because they’re objectively the best-it’s because every click on that link earns them a cut. In 2024, affiliate marketing globally is estimated to exceed $13 billion, and tech media is a massive player in this space. Sites like The Verge, Engadget, and others literally make money when you buy the garbage they’re shilling. How can anyone trust a review that directly profits from the product being sold? The bias is glaring. How often do you see major outlets calling out Apple’s ludicrous pricing for cloud storage or Samsung’s bloated costs for internal memory upgrades? Almost never. Instead, they frame these price hikes as "premium features" or "the cost of cutting-edge tech." It’s manipulation, pure and simple, designed to condition consumers into thinking this exploitation is normal. And let’s not forget the outright PR stunts-like when Apple’s removal of the headphone jack was spun as "courage." Courage? For forcing people to spend hundreds on AirPods that are guaranteed to die in a few years because of irreplaceable batteries? That’s not courage; it’s greed. And the media nodded along, regurgitating Apple’s marketing fluff without a hint of skepticism. And don’t even get started on the reviews themselves. Watch any top TH-cam tech channel, and it’s the same script: unboxing, exaggerated enthusiasm for minor upgrades, and a few token negatives buried under endless praise. You’ll hear about the "sleek design" of a phone that removed expandable storage, but not a peep about how that removal forces users into overpriced cloud services. They’ll gush over "wireless convenience" but won’t mention how these accessories are deliberately designed for planned obsolescence. It’s all about keeping the advertisers happy and the affiliate cash flowing. What’s even worse is how this toxic relationship stifles actual criticism. Smaller, independent reviewers who dare to call out these predatory practices are drowned out by the algorithm, which prioritizes big-name channels and outlets. These independents don’t have the same access to review units or ad dollars, so their voices rarely reach the masses. Meanwhile, the corporate-backed media churns out content that’s indistinguishable from a press release. And the consumers? They’re left to foot the bill, duped into thinking they’re getting cutting-edge innovation when, in reality, they’re paying more for less. They’re funneled into buying expensive, less durable wireless accessories, locked into recurring cloud storage fees, and convinced to upgrade every few years for features they didn’t need in the first place. All while tech media claps like trained seals, shouting about how "revolutionary" these downgrades are. This isn’t journalism-it’s a rigged game where the house always wins, and the consumer always loses. The media isn’t just complicit; it’s an active participant in the scam, selling out its audience for a slice of the corporate pie. It’s time we stop pretending these outlets are on our side. They’re not watchdogs-they’re lapdogs. If you’re waiting for them to bite the hand that feeds them, don’t hold your breath. They’ve already sold their teeth.
Hey, do SD card adapters slow down write speeds? I just bought a 4k 60p camcorder and want to run a san disk extreme micro SD with adapter, in it. I have heard conflicting stories.
Oh yeah... choosing a thing according to your body shape is a lot of fun, especially when each manufacturer has its own sizes. When I was choosing a helmet for a motorcycle... I could only put on a helmet from Shoe... it fit perfectly, the others were like saucepans on my head and pressed everywhere or, on the contrary, dangled. Now I'm going to watch a video about the helmet I already bought =))) I hope it will suit me.
Great job! Thank you.
Love this!!! Great job on the video!
I have the 20 and 30 litre versions of this pack, I would say they are as comfortable as my Osprey packs and just as well made for half the price, I walk every day with my dog and carry 7 kg in the 30 litre pack, you can’t even tell you’re wearing it, it is that comfortable. I would recommend this pack to anyone, it is top notch.
I encountered an issue importing Osmo Pocket 3 videos to DaVinci resolved and this absolutely fixed it. Thank you!
The reasons why these FREE softwares don't work perfectly is so we purchase the the real thing. Well, i don't have $400 just waiting to be spent. Besides we have already paid for it when they sold our private data to millions of sharks. I would love to hit them with the barracuda in the face. And furthermore that AI is a garbage junk.
The skin sock maybe ok for cold nights in your tent, or divers wouldn't go as far as saying they are for camping or hiking
They will be fit for the bin by the time that rear edge cutting in to the back foot breaks in! But that's most honest thing I've heard on them thats definitely been helpful

I notice the Tectal has an issue with glasses. Meaning I am unable to use my glasses since the temple part of the glasses come in contact with the temple area of the helmet. POC was not very helpful in addressing this. I notice that POC MTB only comes in 3 sizes but road comes in more sizes. Bummer, I like my POC road helmet but looks like I am unable to use POC MTB. @pocsportsyoutube
