I found that Decathlon does sell some descent products if you don't buy the cheapest stuff. Got hiking pants, sleeping bags and a puffy from Forclaz/Simond, rated for around 0 to -5 and they are spot on. Might not live as long as the expensive stuff, but that's also not always the case... Cool to see a fellow Belgian doing reviews of Decathlon gear! Keep up the vids!
Spot on, Dieter! I don't care about brands, i just use what works for me and Decathlon has a lot more to offer than most of us realize. A good night's sleep is essential for me, and will always be priority over weight or volume.
I own this bag and I love it. The Makalu 2 is the best bag there is. Period. I have slept in it on really cold nights, -10 or slightly colder, and didn't feel chill at all. You won't be sleeping in the Makalu 2 in above zero temperatures, I can assure you. You'll feel like you're being roasted. Long story short: buy the Makalu 2 if you need an all-around mountaineering sleeping bag in moderately sub-zero temps.
I'm using the Simond Makalu I sleeping bag, comfort rating -5°C, and i'm overall happy with this item. One thing that gave me troubles sometimes, the duck down is NOT hydrophobic which can lead to unpleasant nights in wet climate conditions. I bought a bivi bag but then the moist comes from the inside, never believe and/or trust in breathable bivi bags. ;)
Hi Dieter, in a couple of weeks I am to climb Kilimanjaro. You think the Makalu II will be sufficient to keep me warm overnight (including liner, merino shirt & pants)?
There is a differences not only in weight or packed size. There is quality and smart solutions in more expensive bags. Not mentioning that you don’t like to use that Malala II in -9. It won’t keep you warm in this temperatures without extra down jacket and plenty of chemical heaters.
I only ever base myself on the comfort rating, and manufacturers use standardised tests to determine those. If not, they'd be cast out and cut down by competitors instantly. :)

Well, it was when I bought mine, but that is now some years ago. But you are probably right: if the ratings aren't correct, People will comment on it and the Company Will be cast out. In your experience with these sleeping bags, do they live up to their ratings?
I have used both Makalu bags extensively, sometimes in conditions challenging their ratings (while I usually try to keep a good margin). They have never let me down. Cumulus is being pushed heavily by certain retailers, which has always made me sceptical. Always ask yourself who is pushing a narrative. In many cases it's the seller, not the user.

"breathable" and "hydrophobic" exist mainly in marketing e not so much in reality 😉
Cumulus uses hydrophobic down. Goose down is loftier and more expensive. But your logic makes sense. Nice review. Just started following.

Are the comfort ratings of these sleeping bags comparible? They have the same fill but I thought goose down was more effective then duck down.
