Foundation Start & Eagle Update: SAVING our 1880s Maine Lakeside Cabin YEAR1
I just found this channel and love it. It is very nostalgic for me. My Uncle Charlie had a house near Moose head lake in Maine and this reminds me so much of it. The furnishing look the same. There was a small wood burner just like what you show and a big wood burning oven in the kitchen. I cant wait to see what you do with it.
Glad you found us!
Once again, I find watching you work while I take a break relaxing. I'm kind of in awe of this - the organization, the precision - and am wondering if all of your spaces are like this? What happens if there's a stray sock lying around the house somewhere?
What’s a “stray sock”?
I love watching the concrete video. I spent a summer in my youth doing it using a wheelbarrow and hoe for mixing. That Saloon is going to look great!
Whenever I catch myself wishing I had an easier way to process all this concrete, I remind myself that my barrel mixer is a big step in the right direction.
Always a good day when the cinodrome releases another feature. Dont ever change, Dave. This is fascinating and satisfying stuff!
Thanks for the encouragement! Appreciated.
Awesome
A Salty Dog stamp of approval. The day’s work is done.
When can we get Cinodrome shirts? :)
This winter! Promise! I was just talking to my son yesterday (he’s an artist and printmaker) about putting together a shirt screening set-up in the SF studio.
@@cinodrome I hope it keeps the iconography and vibe of the graphics for the videos. Thanks!
The Lie of Granite... Will we ever learn what rock is that!?
We may have to learn to live comfortably with uncertainty.
@@cinodrome In this time and age that's... a prerequisite, unfortunately.
7:21 WHAT!
What?! My mastery of piano? Or perhaps the 2x4 tabs that keyed the wall sections together?
@@cinodrome was always curious where your music came from. 👏
Hey Dave, thanks for this one, it made me chuckle a few times. Lots of work, you're doing a fantastic job. BEST channel on the Utube 🙂 Take care!
Thanks again for stopping by!
I was wondering why you were using rough cut boards to hold the concrete, then you took it off and showed us the beautiful patterns of the wood in the concrete. Then i remembered you talking about that in one of your previous videos lol
Yup. I have some acid that is recommended to accentuate the textures. I need to test it, given the degree to which I like how it looks already.
Beautiful work with the forms. I live in an 1800 farm house in Maine. I get the ledge issues.
I have yet to face the issue that the north west corner of the structure is 5” too high and it’s sitting directly on ledge. Fun stuff.
We’ll be up October 23rd… hope you’re still in Maine!
Depends on what the weather is doing, but odds are good I’ll exit by then.
This is just old school youtube. a person who is massively multi-talented telling stories in a unique way. It's so appropriately vintage and modern at the same time. It's honest. I wish more youtube was like this in 2024.
That's wonderful to hear. Thank you.
Excellent video as usual, no rum for today.
Better luck next time.
12:35 Random F-bomb? 😆
Hah - I think that's Mary yelling "Pops!"
Amazing! I’m even tired
I was just commenting on the number of folks who consider these films relaxing. I think they may be confusing tiring with relaxing!
WELL DONE! You are a freaking machine. Impressive to watch.
Thank you!
These build videos are so relaxing to watch. Thank you for making these!
I love that so many folks find these relaxing. It's a reminder for me to acknowledge and respect the unique experience of the individual. I consider them fast paced and energizing!
Im intrigued on the difference between reality and episode release Dave, I am imagining we're a few months behind and you've already built your 400ft 360 degree viewing platform above the tree line.
Wait wait wait - you know about the fire tower guest house? (I'm not kidding...are you?) The films are only about a week behind the work. I tend to cram the editing into three marathon days right before the Friday uploads.
@@cinodrome now begins searching for the fire tower, I recently watched a Grand Designs (UK program) on converting a Victorian Water tower to a home in central london.
This reminds me of spending weekends with my grandpa in my youth. Almost every weekend in the summer, we'd mix up at least one bag of concrete for a project he was working on in his back yard. Looking back as an adult, I have no idea what we were making because when he passed, there wasn't any concrete to be seen anywhere at all, let alone his back yard. Don't remember what we did with it, but man we sure did make a lot of it! Also, when The Hall Raisers kicked in, I half expected the Something Weird Video logo to pop up. Too many years of watching cheesy movies I think.
Ah - don’t know anything about the provenance of that song. I’ll check it out.
Wow! How did I not know about Something Weird Video!?
@@cinodrome Given your background, I'm rather shocked you didn't know about them.
@@cinodrome It's called The Hell Raisers by Syd Dale.
Why is nobody talking about the new jacked thumbnail!?
Ah, the old low wide angle lens after carrying around 80 pound bags for an hour trick...
This is the second Summer that I've spent watching this project and it just keeps getting better. Thank you for sharing this story.
Thank you so much for watching!
What a great build. That was the hard part of the saloon build. Now the fun part can begin. May I suggest for the camp lumber, perhaps mounting some shelf brackets on the upright supports.(unless the manufacturer says not to, of course.) It would extend out about 18", but the lumber would be out of the way, protected but accessable when needed. Just a thought...
The hard part, if you don't count the still to be poured east wall and floor!
If my wife ever finds your videos, oh man she is going to make me feel so inadequate! Youre raising the bar for us men! Love the videos and watching your growing comfort infront of the camera
You can tell her I never remember birthdays or anniversaries. Thanks for watching!
I've been contemplating DIYing a concrete floor in an old two-car garage on our farm. Thank you very much for helping me decide to hire it done. 🙄
Hah! I can't wait to do the floor - that will feel like progress!
You did the music too. What don't you know how to do?
Yes indeed - I've been hiding that skill set from the world until today.
Clicks video titled “I love concrete”. Video opens with you cursing at concrete. 😂
Cursing the concrete delivery vehicle! (There's research to be done on how the industry settled on 80 pounds as the most workable bag weight.)
Great to see the work continuing, absolutely worthy of the effort
Thank you!
I say you give the eagle what he wants.... its own show!!!
…just as soon as I can engineer a game-cam that I can operate and service from the top of a 150 foot pine tree…
So many things I loved about this video: 1. Seeing views of downtown Houlton is great - it's been so many years since I've been there! 2. The lumber is so satisfyingly beautiful. 3. Your progressing relationship with the eagle made me laugh out loud. 4. The multi-angle influencer vids (hehe) - loved Nadya's short-form version of the weekend, love seeing your angle of it as well!
The screaming eagle was this year’s juvenile and it screamed like that ALL day long for a month. It has now either left for college or calmed down.
SW Collins! This life long Mainer, who was born and raised in the county is psyched to see them in your series!
It’s only fair. They see me daily.
What is the chalk marker you went with?
The permanent white is a Presto white-out pen. (Fabulous things - keep one one hand at all times.) I've tried several liquid chalk pens, and I don't love any of them. They're not opaque, while also hard to erase and clean off completely.
Harper and I loved watching! The cabinets look great in person.
So glad!
So psyched I found this gem! I kinda fear it's the function of some clever tracking from TH-cam as I likely drove pretty close to your place on Saturday when I got done with the Allagash, and was heading back home to southern Maine. looking forward to seeing what you got done this year. Nice work!
So glad you found it, even if big brother brought it to you. Stay tuned!
It would be cool to have some sort of low-frills camera setup near the shore to get a Timelapse of the lake/trees while you’re in CA.
I’ve been thinking bigger - Eagle Cam! When I sat down this past spring to engineer it, things became extremely involved quickly. Your idea is more easily done. I’m going to give this a think!
Making great progress and more importantly, continuing to make memories as you go.
- exactly -
Loved the shots of downtown and the Co-op and THE table… if you ever need small wooden benches made from reclaimed wood, I’ve got a guy.
I know that guy!
Wondering if you could share how you made that "go get coffee" painted glass effect? Would love some tips!
Photography of a hand painted sign - isolated and cleaned up in photoshop - cut and past in photoshop to create custom text - save out as a PNG file with alpha - bring into Premier Pro and stack on top of video clip. Bob's your uncle.
@@cinodrome That's exactly what I was afraid you were going to say. You're a true artist!
Wow. That lumber is the most beautiful thing I've seen in a long time. The dimensions, the color, the texture, everything about it. (And that oh so satisfying "shuuush" sound when you swipe your hand across the surface after cutting or nailing.) Your vids are top notch, thank you!
You’re very welcome!
Good clean lumber! Nice work!
Thanks!
Another great video Dave, thank you! You're a fantastic filmmaker and a great craftsman. I was very much hoping for a cinodrome video this weekend. Looks like everyone had fun, best possible result. Take care!
Thank you for your support!
Nice to see signs of prosperity in Houlton. I remember, as a boy on summer vacation 50+ years ago, being impressed by Houlton and Presque Isle, but most of the intervening years have not been kind. Still, hope springs eternal, and you're helping!
Wait a second! What kind of nut uses a hobby knife with #11 blade to do carpentry? That's one reason I watch, to see someone else who can say, "I did it my way." (My way includes using algebra and trigonometry to do carpentry, which may be even more nuts.)
I've been coming here for 30 years. It may be a flawed metric, but I judge the health of the community by the health of the old downtown. It's still struggling, but much more vibrant than a decade ago. I do enjoy being active in the town. If nothing else, the hardware store loves me.
I appreciate this. I will admit that as I was trimming away the excess construction adhesive with an Exacto, I questioned my sanity. I decided it would be dishonest not to include the footage.
I forgot to add that I really enjoyed your Lucca presentation on the millennium falcon build. That clarified a few things that you and Adam were talking about during the speeder bike build. Thank you for that presentation.
That's a deep internet dive right there.
Wait, where is this?
If you go onto TH-cam TV, instead of going into the channel, scroll right through the episodes and Dave's presentation should be on there. Its the LUCCA sci-fi and comic convention in Italy.
What a great build! So nice to see the saloon coming along nicely. Will we be seeing a video of the shop workbench being built? Also, is every Three weeks the time we should expect a new video! We were spoiled last year with one a week videos😊
I aim for weekly, typically manage one every two weeks, but lately, every three. Let's hope every other week remains the norm.
An excellent video as usual, enjoyed with a nice Venezuelan Rum. Santa Teresa 1796 Special Edition. 100% recommended!
I'm pleased by this viewing routine. 100% recommend.
Amazing work and my favorite channel TH-cam! Also, if you dont mind my asking, where did you find that jacket / what's they style called (around 12:30) if I was to look for something similar?
Over the past couple of years, I've dedicated an inordinate amount of time looking for the perfect carpentry jacket. This one isn't it. The one I have in San Francisco is great, but I still believe there's a better one out there. I can't put my hands on the SF jacket maker at the moment. If you want to put in the time, go back to the SF films from the spring - a couple folks asked me who made it and I provided the name.
As someone who moved up here (Amity) in March (2024), to build a home from scratch learning the "good" spots is always helpful. Thanks a ton ! The goal is to build a community MakerSpace in town so folks can have access to laser cutters, 3d printers, cnc routers, wood shop tools, metal shop tools etc.... I hope to build and run that as my "retirement job", hope you join or at least stop by say hi.
Amazing! Keep me posted.
Hi Joe, Welcome to Maine! That is a great goal and one that is sorely needed in this state and during these increasingly difficult times. If you're ever in the Portland area, stop into the Open Bench Project - a non-profit maker-space that can best be described as 'scrappy and determined' with some good people who could be helpful in your goal. Best, Jaclyn
My uncle/grandfather had a similar table at the local breakfast spot where the old timers gathered. They always called it "The Table of Knowledge"
I bet they'd know where to get some good pine.
