      I regret to inform that Hugo is with his rightful owner (my son) and will only make a brief appearance this summer. This state of affairs is such a problem that a puppy may need to join the team. Stay tuned.

      I've said it before - you're welcome! I spent my career on the back side of the camera. I'm still working on the acting required to place myself into these little films (it turns out that "being yourself" for camera is still acting) but I've discovered that I need it on occasion to tell the stories I want to tell. I'm glad to hear you find it effective.

    WOW! That 1910 calendar is such a cool find. Hard to believe someone would just cover it over. Good thing they did though. You should make a frame for it with some of the old wood you take out.

      It is. Common practice around here. We don't drink it, but bring in jugs of water "from the in-town house". (We don't have an in-town house, mind you, but have relatives who do.)

    • @cinodrome

      Thank you! It was surprising to me that hard labor triggered extreme symptoms, when I always assumed hard labor was good for the hands compared to repetitive use of digital tools. The years of keyboard use likely set me up for the problem, but I'm not sure. In any case, the surgery seems to have done the trick. Long may it last.

    • @SelahPictures

      @@cinodrome Long, indeed! Might be worth a hard look at your workstation ergonomics when you get back to the opposite coast. Did they hook you up with some good information for that? My long-fought habit of using my palm as a mallet frequently exacerbates my RSI when I'm doing hard labor, maybe you have some similar thing you haven't spotted in your habit list. Cheers!

    • @cinodrome

      @@SelahPictures We had a full time ergonomics person (ergonomist?) for most of my time at ILM. I consider myself well informed and well set-up. The hard truth is that we aren't well designed for long hours at a work station. I spend less and less time clicking - it's why I was so surprised that it was physical labor that triggered the extreme symptoms. My hand specialist admitted that it's all still something of a mystery. The way our hands are built out of the box seems to have more to do with it than anything.

      I thought my carpal tunnel went away, but it came back. About how much does that surgery usually cost?

  • @rekrap1369

    Curious what prompted the carpal tunnel. Was it precautionary or did it flair up?

    • @cinodrome

      I, and I think most people, always operated under the belief that carpel tunnel was aggravated by certain repetitive motions. My hand specialist gave that notion the surprisingly-common-in-medicine "we're not really sure", and considers the issue to have more to do with the engineering of the hand we're born with combined with age. My symptoms came on fast with the introduction of activities like day-long shoveling last summer, but was my carpel tunnel already problematic from years of working with digital tools, or would it have been a problem under any circumstance? It's unclear.

    Is this syndrome a cumulative thing that went rapid from the hard labor during the restoration?

    • @cinodrome

      I think so. The odd thing was that I always worried about carpel tunnel during my 15 years of long hours at a computer. In the end, it was shoveling and carrying bags of concrete that did me in.

  • @Bellerophonmodeler

    You might want to be careful about cutting even fallen trees on your property. My cousin worked for the Maine Department of Environmental Conservation, and regulations apply when clearing trees, including fallen ones, near shorelines.

    • @cinodrome

      You're absolutely right. Each Maine town adopts their own shoreline zoning ordinance (though I'm not sure how much variation is to be found in the state) and I have a copy of mine on the desk. It provides a formula relating to tree density and trunk diameter to maintain a "well distributed stand of trees". Storm damaged trees can be removed without a permit or replanting as long as the resulting opening in the tree canopy isn't greater than 250 square feet.
      Undoubtedly more information than you were looking for, but your comment gave me the excuse to review the fallen tree details.

    • @Bellerophonmodeler

      Not TMI at all. You should hear my cousin expound on environmental issues! Knowing more than you wanted to is no bad thing.
