Doug Miller at Wood Spun Round

I'm glad you've stopped in. Wood Spun Round is about my adventures in wood. I am primarily a woodturner, thus the name, Wood Spun Round. But I do other wood work as well. Occasionally I will add an off topic video just because it is a part of my life. My son's jazz band performance is an example. I've been turning seriously since around 1995. Most of my work has been given away as gifts, but I have also sold some through a local art & craft store. I am hoping that I will get my work into a new store/gallery soon. If you see a piece that you'd like to own, send me a message and I'll be happy to discuss it with you.
As with other channels, the videos you see here are for entertainment only. My videos show my way of doing what I do. You may have another way, or a way that feels safer to you. No problem. If there is anything you see me do in my video that doesn't feel safe to you, don't do it. This channel is about sharing what I do with those who want to see it.

This Wing Bowl Was Worth the Wait
Made a wood trade several months ago with @waltwhybrewwoodworking. In that exchange I received this great branch of Brazilian Pepper wood. We thought that the bulge on the outside of the bend was a burl. It wasn’t but did have some nice color and grain.
This piece finished out at 10 3/4” tip to tip, 4 1/8” front to back, and 3 7/8” to the highest point. It is sanded 80-220 grit and finished with multiple coats of walnut oil.

Woodturning - Why Would You Ever Paint a Bowl?
มุมมอง 31714 วันที่ผ่านมา
A suggestion was made to turn a bowl with color. This is my offering even though it wasn’t submitted for the collected montage. In fact, my idea was to gift it to my Mother for her birthday. Bowl is cherry, even though it was labeled as pear. I think I even said it was pear in the video. 5 1/8” diameter x 2” tall Painted with Olde Century Colors, Simulated Milk Paint, Olde Parchment and Country...
Turning a Flipped Box
มุมมอง 248หลายเดือนก่อน
I was given several hard maple milk jugs out of a church nursery. They make a great start for turning projects. This project I first saw from a friend of mine who did it as well. This is my take on the Inverted Box. Join me on my journey of discovery as we turn a different style of box than the ones we normally see. I Turned a Dish From an Orange
มุมมอง 271หลายเดือนก่อน
I came across a scab of osage orange from a mill that was cutting it for lumber. Parts of the scab were just large enough to get some small dishes from. This dish ended up roughly 5 1/2” x 1”. I turned it primarily using Easy Wood Tools with an assist from a skew and a bedan. Plates Turned On a Glue Block
มุมมอง 3632 หลายเดือนก่อน
I had a project turning a bunch of plates. I had a good bit of 3/4 and 4/4 lumber that was suitable, but how do you hold the blank to get started? I used a Forstner bit to drill a recess on one of them. But then I remembered a club member talking about gluing on a glue block using CA. So, I gave it a try and decided that I really like this method. Take a look and see if maybe this method is a g...

Very cool - those wings came out great.
Thank you so much!
What a great idea Doug, fine turn
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching.
sorry I missed this Doug. My job was front and center. Love the bowl! turned out great bud!
Hey Zed. Thanks for watching. Even with the shakes and splits it gave up and quit fighting me. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment.
Great bowl Doug. Iove your safety sandles,I like how they are made to look like feet, just to upset the health and safety police🤣🤣🤣👍
I know. I had been wearing them earlier because they’re quick and easy to get on. About half way through I realized I had not changed. The shoes I usually wear in the shop are steal toed. I’m sure the griping will start soon. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Amazing piece of wood!
Thank you so much Jason. It was a fun turn.
Love it Doug. Fantastic piece of turning my friend. Take care Doug. Cheers, Huw
Thank you Huw. It was fun!
Awesome man
Thank you so much Clint!
Doug I finally got a chance to start watching your videos... Great Job describing your process as always... Now for me to put some of this into use when I get a chance... I have a bunch of Spalted Oak that will make some great plates and platers... Thanks Again
Thank you Tim. Great way to use those 3/4” pieces.
Morning Doug, what a beautiful transition watching you doing that bowl 🥣 😀 from that lovely picture wood 🪵, enjoying to see you doing that Doug ❤
Thank you so much. I do enjoy seeing what an ordinary piece of fire wood can become.
What In The World!! Stunning ❤❤
Thank you so much!!
Beautiful winged bowl, Doug.😊😊
Thank you so much Copper!
Lovely winged bowl Doug.
Thank you Paul!
Definitely a unique bowl you made there Buddy! Really cool. Reminds me of the thing they try and catch in the Harry Potter movies.
Thank you Ray!
Doug, you made great work with that branch. I’m glad I sent it to you. Excellent choice of a winged bowl.
Thank you Walt. Started to cut the ends off and just turn the center. I’m very happy that I kept them on.
I love projects like this one Doug. Very nice. Thank you for sharing. See you soon
Thank you Al. See you soon!
Nice job on this one Doug! Pretty cool shape it looks like it coud take off and fly with a little wind. I would like to see it with all the oil on. I do like a little sheen and not sure if it can get there. Not like my polished lacquer though.
Thank you Gary. Not sure how much sheen this will get, but we will see as I get more oil on it.
I have never used Walnut oil but it sure looks good on the first coat.
Fab Doug great job 😂😂😂
Thank you Ray!
That’s pretty awesome
Thank you kindly, Luie. It was fun while turning for sure.
Very nice looking winged bowl Doug! 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Bruce. The pepper wood was a joy to turn and sanded beautifully.
Thanks for sharing Doug
My pleasure. Thank you for watching. BTW, I turned the pepper you sent me. Video is on the way.
Nice training in all of your videos.
Thank you. I always hope to be instructional as well as entertaining.
Looks fantastic bud!
Thank you Ray. Goblets are typically fun to turn.
@DougMilleratWoodSpunRound I haven't tried one yet, I need to. I focused on bowls to start and now I'm branching out on other things. Not ready for one of your thin ones yet though!🤣
Sorry i miss your live,Doug you and your wife must try the jamaican Blue mountain coffee ☕️
Sounds good! I’ll have to find a supplier to order some from. Thanks for coming along.
Sorry I missed the live, Doug. Came out nice.
Thank you Billy. I went back and took some more out of the bottom so the filters go a bit further into the bowl. If I do another it will be even deeper. But the concept is there and it will work well.
Very nice and a good idea. Love it.
Thank you! 😊
Horrible
Sorry you didn’t care for it. Many love it. Can you tell me what it is that you dislike about it? Hope the next one pleases your eye better.
Very nice Doug. See you tomorrow
Thank you Al. Yes, I’ll see you then.
I like this one very much thanks for the great video Doug, Kind regards From Will 👍 😊
Cheers Will. Very simple technique. Just a change of paste.
Hi Doug, I like the distressed look on the outside and the black compliments it very well. I don't colour bowls very often but when I do I like to leave the inside natural and only colour the outside. Nice video my friend. Take care Doug. Cheers, Huw
You’ve described how I’ve always done my coloring, but this one somehow called for the inside to be colored too. Thanks for watching my friend.
Beautiful bowl, Doug😊😊
Thank you so much Copper.
Nice bowl, Doug!
Thanks so much Billy!
Doug great job mate well done
Cheers Alan!
Nice turning and nice shape. You asked Why would you ever paint a bowl. Well I probably never would. Not that I do not think yours is nice. I doubt I would. But I did not say Never LOL. Gary
I understand. This one almost didn’t get the paint treatment. I think I’m going to try getting some poplar blanks to do more of these with. Thanks for watching Gary!
Doug, why did you use a 'simulated' milk paint instead of true milk paint?
I did because that was what was available. Kind of nice that it’s not a “use it or lose it” kind of deal. Good looking effect on the surface. When this runs out I’ll probably go to an actual milk paint. Thanks for watching Scott.
Very nice Doug. Nice ideas. Pretty piece. See you tomorrow
Thank you Al!
Very nice!
Thanks so much!
Good to see yah Doug, looks like I have a bunch of channels I need to start following! Was definitely a cool cat.
Thank you. You’re welcome to tag along.
Nice work Doug
Thanks 👍
Doug shop vac sound level OK, Great Cat. Fantastic to see Queen Ruby and Wayne, take care
Thank you for the feedback. Good to have you along.
Cool project.
Thank you Jonny!
That's a cool idea! Love it!
Thank you. It was pretty fun.
Perrrrrrfic Doug. Meow, Meow, Meow, Meow Meow, Meow, Meow Meow. Hope to see you tomorrow Doug
Thanks Al 😂
Nice job Doug 👍
Thank you Dore!
Very nice Doug, sorry couldn't watch live. Hope you get your cameras sorted. I wish you had take the chuck key out LOL. Take care care my friend. Cheers, Huw
No problem Huw. I didn’t expect many since it was a pop-up. I’ll have to re-watch to see about the chuck key. You’re correct, it should never stay in the chuck unattended.
Very nice Doug. Sorry, I missed the live. Didn't see this yesterday until late last night. See you on the next one
Just happy you found it. Thanks so much Al.
Many hours later. Beautiful work Doug. Also one day I will teach you some Aussie English. ‘ Bueaty Mate’🇦🇺👍
Yep, another form of the same language for sure. Thanks for watching.
Watch the whole replay! Great piece Doug!
Thank you so much. It’s greatly appreciated.
Thanks for sharing Doug. Looks great! I'm in upstate New York, Southern Adirondacks.
When you use Superglue for your glue block, how do you remove it from the plate bottom? Thank you!
I saw someone used a clarinet bell as a bowl pedestal.
Thank you for watching. Always good to be reminded where everyone is.
Looks great, Doug! What happened to Ruby is more than atrocious! You'd think she could appeal it.
Thanks for watching Billy. No question. You would think that situation could be overturned pretty easily. I may have a connection to someone in Washington who may be able to make that happen. Maybe if all of us could drop an email to our senator and rep we can get this atrocity reversed. Thanks for the idea. I’m getting on it now.
Doug great job there buddy, think your drill bit might need a wee sharpen after that.
You might be right. Thanks for coming along.
