Westcountry Wanderings
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 ส.ค. 2015
I wanted to launch a TH-cam channel to help improve my self confidence and my self esteem. My channel explores interesting and sometimes quirky locations or events throughout Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Devon & Cornwall, and other English counties South of Birmingham and West of Oxford. I focus on history, landscape, walking, photography, geology, nature, canals, railways, industrial archaeology and famous residents, particularly with a literary link. I have struggled with my mental health since I was 14 years old, particularly anxiety and depression as well as suicidal ideation. I was diagnosed as having autism in 2004. I occasionally talk about my mental health and autism on my channel. My Channel launched at the end of February 2021 during the pandemic, and the third English Covid 19 Lockdown.

Looking for a Lost Canal - 5 - The Liskeard & Looe Union Canal
มุมมอง 1K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
I head to the Cornish town of Liskeard to try and uncover the remains and any evidence of the former Liskeard & Looe Union Canal, which ran in the direction of the coastal town of Looe, deep in the beautiful Looe Valley. CORRECTION In the video I point to what I thought were remains of Moorswater Station - this is, in fact a limestone unloading bay, for the nearby limekilns. The former Station ...

Looking for a Lost Canal 4: The Dorset & Somerset Canal
I've been to Salcombe a few times, and it's always busy.
another great walk. have done parts of it 10 years ago. Walked from Home to sheepscombe and then across to Slad and Stroud and back home along the canal. caroline.
Hi Paul. jWorkmans wood used to be owned by the Workman family who lived in Sheepscombe and the trees were felled for the saw mill at Woodchester by the railway station opposite the wood yard. Now the windmill factory. When we were making the Woodchester layout we went to meet Mr Workman. The sawmill used to make the chocks which are hammered into the chairs to secure the rail. They also made telegraph poles for railways and the GPO. Originally horses pulled the logs on 4 wheel wagons and then traction engine and lorries pulled the loads. Where the chuck wagon is was the stables and later traction engine shed. Caroline.
This is what attracted us to England. The Beautiful Cotswolds and surrounding areas. Haven't got there yet but hopefully soon. Thank you Paul. Wonderful job.👍
A lovely seasonal walk with some beautiful photography and the colour of the beech leaves underfoot was stunning.
Nice build up to xmas this year
What a beautiful day for a walk in the fresh air and sunshine. Thank you.
Glorious. My wife and I do this walk in summer but the other way round. Always have lunch at The local pub in Sheepscombe which makes the steep walk at the back of the pub even steeper!!
Glorious walk! Your summary description sums it up admirably. The warm glow evoked by sunlight on the Autumn leaves contrasting with the shivering cold evoked by the snow and sound of icy blasts. What could better remind us of the transition from Autumn to Winter? Looking forward to another Cotswold walk soon. Thank you.
Did you actually dance in, or next to the nightclub? That was a great walk, shame the weather wasn't very kind.
Hi Paul this was a lovely walk! Lovely seeing the contrast of autumn colours with the scattering of snow! Nice hearing about the leaping lady that is Gladys! So annoying when you have to back track due to a wrong turn! Now that’s a pew with a view! Wow the sun through the trees is beautiful! Nice seeing the belted Galloways! Does look a little on the chilly side! Enjoyed coming along with you! Have a great weekend! Jill & Nick 👍
Great Walk this one Paul, what fantastic colours and contrasts between the white snow and the trees and leaves ect, lovely! Best wishes Darren👌👍👍👍
Thank you for this - I fell in love with Kingsbridge when I visited it many years ago and it still looks as inviting as I remembered. Inadvertently I had the volume turned right up and got a bit of a shock when the organ music started up!
Hi Paul nice video and views and have a nice weekend 😀
Great, beautiful video, Paul! Though there's no need to apologize for putting your personal safety first over looking at the camera. And I say this for perfectly selfish reasons, as I want you making more videos of your wanderings around the West Country! :)
interesting walk, looked chilly out there. It would've been nice to see a pic of Gladys' Leap, having enjoyed the album for many years. @6.30 is there any way to check if the marked path is no longer a public right of way?
Hi, and thank you for the comment. Yes, I filmed Gladys Leap in my original Cranham video - I link to it at the end. I could not film there again this time as the descent to the stream was very very slippery and I was concentrating on keeping upright! You can find it (Gladys' Leap section of the video) here: th-cam.com/video/s5VTJ-zMFE0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=jX2C425lQUX6Bf9X&t=403 I have reported the blocked right of way to the Gloucestershire PROW team - hopefully they will sort it. It doesn't affect the access to Gladys Leap, which remains open. Thanks so much! Cheers, Paul
@westcountrywanderings Thank you, I'll watch the other video this weekend. It would be interesting to know what response you get back about the path.
What a gorgeous walk!! It was particularly pretty with the snow and the autumn colours combined! Sheepscombe cricket ground is very similar to the Lynton one in The Valley of Rocks!
So envious. What wonderful views
Thank you! They really were stunning that day, and hardly anyone else was about. As long as you wrapped up, it was most enjoyable. This walk will really stick in the memory for me I think. Take care, Paul
Good Evening Paul and greetings from Poland Lovely to return to one of my favourite walks we did in 2022. Gorgeous weather, beautiful scenery, snow underfoot and a bright blue sky. Fabulous!
Good evening Michael! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed this walk, apart from the slightly slippery bits. The scenery was fab, I felt, and benefitted from the quality of the light on that day. Cranham is a rather special Cotswold village, isn't it? I can see why Gustav Holst was drawn to it. Hope you have a great weekend. Take care, Paul
I am glad I stayed around for the photos at the end, including the towpath cat. What a fascinating history the Stroudwater canal has. I thought this must be a pretty early one, but the Exeter ship canal was built in the 1560's. Thanks for educating & entertaining us.
Thank you Faith, yes, you are quite correct that the Exeter Ship Canal was (probably) the earliest canal in UK. However, the medieval Glastonbury Canal (not the later one) is probably older, although it isn't a true canal. That one (for monks at Glastonbury Abbey) was built in the 10th C. Glad you enjoyed this and the photos at the end too! Hope you have a good weekend, despite Storm Bert. Stay safe, Paul
Kingsbridge looks nice l liked the Nightclub too!
Thank you Janet. Yes, it really is a lovely and relatively unspoilt Devon town, with much charm. Only Kingsbridge could have a nightclub like that! Take care, Paul
Beautiful wagon at the start- blustery I'm thinking ( then you said "blustery"🤣🤣) Nice replica of the Mayflower. The Autumn leaves - just gorgeous and bright. Like the (pale) coloured houses. The church has a sort of castle tower. Nice style. Love it when they are actually playing the organ when visiting churches. Pity about the rain. Great weather for the museum. ☎Oh what fun- that phone box. Good investment Paul. Nice buildings in town. Amazing clock. Lovely walk through Kingsbridge. 👌🇳🇱🙋♀🥝
Thank you Anita! Yes, for me, Kingsbridge is the loveliest town in Devon - amongst some high competition too with the likes of Tavistock, Ashburton and Chagford, all lovely, but I personally like Kingsbridge best. Glad you enjoyed this little tour. Take care, Paul
My heart sings when I see a train corridor, not sure why! What a lovely journey.
Yes, I loved corridor trains - I miss them! Good to be able to travel on them again courtesy of the heritage railways. Thank you Faith. Take care, Paul
Hi Paul, Great Vlog, i would like to see more of these as i really think it helps others. Just reading through the Comments say's it all really. i know it certainly helps me to understand my own Mental Health. Great stuff as Always! Best wishes Darren👌👍👍👍
Thank you Darren - that's very kind of you. Glad it helps you too. Yes, I guess everyone needs to find their 'happy place' and their 'happy hobby' to escape and find solace. I do hope to do another one in the New Year. Take care, Paul
Wow Paul, you got some Great Captures of the old pier in this one! great stuff! Best wishes Darren👌👍👍👍
Thank you Darren - oh, yes I remember this! A bit problematic to film and photograph as it was so so windy. I remember getting a mouth full of sand at Sand Bay! Glad you enjoyed the photography though. It was great seeing your update on it the other day - I look forward to seeing progress on it. Take care, Paul
@westcountrywanderings I am in touch with the guys and will be doing another in March 2025 hopefully 🙏
Hi Paul, well where to start so i will keep this short. i can relate to so many things that you have openly and honestly talked about on this Vlog. just want to say that Talking really does help and having the strength to film a very personal video like this one just goes to show your strength and will power! Now i know that you will think that comment strength and will power doesn't relate to you but it does Paul because you have got up got out there and filmed this very interesting Video and if your wondering if it will help others? then yes it most certainly will! Keep it up Paul i find all your Video's are great! and i know how much it helps you to cope and carry on with the Daily Grind. take care, best wishes Darren👌👍👍👍
Thank you Darren - that's a really lovely and heartfelt comment. Glad you found some commonality in it too. Take care, Paul
More fascinating history Paul. A thoroughly enjoyable watch. 👍🏻
Thank you Watto! Glad you enjoyed it - yes, incredible amount of history that the Stroudwater has, doesn't it? Hope you have a good weekend - despite storm Bert! Stay safe, Paul
Glorious views
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the views. Take care, Paul
Washabrook Lane is another lovely walk, used to look down over St Thomas' church from in-laws garden. Such a beautiful view!
Oh, yes, I remember that walk - yes, it is rather lovely. Take care, Paul
The "night club" is fantastically funny! Thanks for investing the Pound coin for the sake of your art. The music really takes the "club" to its laughable best. Possibly the funniest adaptive reuse of an old phone box I've seen. Great, enjoyable video, Paul. Thanks for this, as well as all your other various efforts!
Thanks Paul. I really enjoyed seeing Kingsbridge and Dodbrooke....and the night photos. What a funny Nightclub Phonebox😁🕺. When you mentioned The King of Prussia I thought of the King of P in Fowey. I will have to find a summer video of the ferry going to Salcombe. 🏖
Thank you Cathy! Yes, I have done a ferry trip to Salcombe, but that was before I started my TH-cam Channel - hopefully I will cover that in a future video on a suitable nice day! You are absolutely right - there is the King of P in Fowey too - I wonder what the connection is? Yes, that Nightclub - that is such a Kingsbridge thing! Great to hear from you. Take care, Paul
A nice video Paul. Really interesting to look around these 2 places. You captured some lovely autumn colours. Loved the night club!! 🤣🤣
Thank you Louise! Yes, that Night Club! Bit of a squeeze if a mini-bus load of clubbers visit!! Thanks for a lovely comment. Take care, Paul
Very enjoyable views of the charming twins which are Kingsbridge. I like the ingenious Nightclub in a telephone booth, raising money for the local foodbank. If only our Income Support and wages system was as generous as the selfless folk who operate local foodbanks. I thought the nightime images of Kingsbridge were enchanting. Thank you.
Thank you Macolm, Yes, it is good that the money goes to Kingsbridge Food Bank. Quite - about them being needed, unfortunately. I never remember them in the 1960s/1970s/1980s when there seemed to be more of a secure finanical safety net, and even a basic job was enough to cover more than just the basic necessities. Glad you liked the night time images! Take care, Paul
Hi Paul. Great to see dodbrook and kingsbridge. Annually there is a bus running day with 7ft 6in vehicles due to the narrow streets and lanes including those from Loddiswell. caroline.
Hi Caroline. Oh yes, Loddiswell! Roads around there are so narrow - and steep! Bus running day sounds interesting. Glad you enjoyed the little tour here. Take care, Paul
great Video Paul, i have spent a little time in Kingsbridge when visiting my Best man who lives in nearby Chillington. it's a lovely place when the Sun is shining. Unfortunately you didn't seem to get any luck that day. Best Wishes Darren👌👍👍👍
Thanks Darren. Yes, I know Chillington quite well out there on the Dartmouth road - although the through coastal road to Dartmouth via Slapton has been closed for a few months now (coastal erosion). It rarely rains in that part of South Devon, but it rained every day when I stayed there for a few days in October, and often quite heavily too. Take care, Paul
Thanks for that video, Paul.
Thank you Michael! Always amazes me just how much history this short canal has! Cheers, Paul
Mornin' Paul, It looks a great place to live, perhaps not over run by tourists? Its got some lovely features like all those alleys and raised pavements plus the quirking Night Club and magnificent Clock Tower. My ears pricked up when you explained the type of inlet. The etymology of the word Ria is Galician, the northern corner of Spain just above Portugal. Its a coastline with many similar inlets, often used for farming mussels and probably fish too. You will see rafts in the middle of the inlet which support long cables to which the mussels attach and grow until being harvested!! Continuing with the language theme, you need to be careful if you want to go to a Night Club in Spain because here the meaning is slightly different, essentially they are brothels. The surprising thing is that they are not hidden away often on the motorway or on the outskirts of the cities, brightly lit too!! All the best!!
Good morning David! Wow, I didn't know that about brothels in Spain! You're right - Kingsbridge seems to get few tourists unlike it's near coastal neighbour Salcombe. That's Kingsbridge's gain I think. The town centre is unspoilt although lots of new housing is creeping up around it. Good to see it is relatively thriving too. Ah, interesting to hear about the Ria entomology - fascinating. There are a few more inlets before you get to Salcombe - Frogmore is particularly attractive. Hope you have a good day - off to film a Cotswold Walk video today. Take care, Paul
Thanks for that your of Kingsbridge, Paul. Very interesting!
Thank you Michael! Yes, it is a really lovely town and doesn't get the high numbers of tourists like other South Hams towns like Dartmouth or Totnes. A proper Devon rural community. I loved living near there. Thanks again Michael. Take care, Paul
Hi Paul nice tour lots to see there 👌
Thank you Roy! Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you are having a good week. Take care, Paul
Good Evening Paul and greetings from Poland A delightful video of two towns in one. Lovely churches, quaint hilly streets and beautifully painted houses in all sorts of colours. A superb walk and as usual with your excursions, plenty to learn about the places on the way. I hope you didn't get too wet and cold
Thank you Michael - glad you found it an interesting wander. Kingsbridge is a really lovely town with a slightly old-fashioned feel - and I mean that in a good way. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care, Paul
Interesting ❤❤
Thank you! Paul
I live in the US now. I hadn’t been home (Stroud) in a couple of years, and came back for about a week. Took a walk through Standish Wood, and it really is amazing that there’s nothing like an English woodland. It felt peaceful, fulfilling, and I really felt home for those couple of hours
Thank you - and yes, you can't beat a native English Woodland. Standish Wood from Westrip to Haresfield Beacon in Gloucestershire is simply superb. Long may it remain protected. Take care, Paul
A very interesting video Paul, well researched thank you. Jan
You're most welcome - glad you enjoyed it. Most of the research came from Michael Handford and Joan Tucker's books about The Stroudwater Navigation, as well as some other bits of pieces online and in the Museum in the Park. Some also came from Gloucester Museum. Take care, Paul
Hi Paul, very well crafted video, incorporating lots of old photos. I remember your video on the pleasure canal and the containers too. So much history there, how on earth do you remember it all!! Look forward to the next installment in this series. All the best!!
Thank you David. Yes, it takes a while to learn my lines, but once you get used to it it doesn't take too long. I usually do it a day or two after writing the script. I might be able to do another 'Secrets of the Thames & Severn' before the year is out, hopefully. Hope you are having a good week. Take care, Paul
How wonderful to be back in your precious wood. I can't believe it has been 2 years. The sights & sounds are so good.
Thank you Faith - and, yes, I was shocked to find out it was two years ago too! Take care, Paul
The Nine Undertakers Paul, what ever next. Fascinating history, thanks very much. Ron
Thank you Ron. Gosh, this canal is just postively dripping in historical secrets isn't it Ron? So many aspects to it. Hope you are having a good week! Take care, Paul
Hi Paul, Great video you really cant go wrong in Autumn. Its a really unusual line, with two branches really. I wonder if they will make it down to Wadebridge? You know I was looking over some photos of Bodmin General only the other day. i was looking for photos of the Portishead branch and happened on these. We popped in on our way back from Wadebridge having stayed with my sister and I came away with some good snaps. In fact I was also looking for ones in Bath for you too. I'll see if I can work out how to send them on your FB group. Yesterday I posted a couple of videos that I prepared for the STWWW Steam Toys World Wide Weekend hosted on Tapatalk, the videos are published on youTube as tapatalk doesnt handle them very well. All the best!!
Thank you David. Yes, you can always private message me the photos to my Paul profile on Facebook. I would love to see them if you get chance. Thank you. It is quite an unusual, non-linear line, and odd that there was a seperate Bodmin North Station too - not an ideal arrangement for passengers I would not have thought. Hope all is good with you. Take care, Paul
Yes. It was without a doubt the creation of the first container ship. That's a very interesting bit of information Paul. Always love the canal videos. Thank you.👍
Thank you Daryl! Yes, it is incredible that an invention which the world's economy now completely rests on started here - and there is still no blue plaque for it by one of the lifts! Take care, Paul
Another heritage railway that I didn’t know existed! A very pretty run on their branch lines. I was puzzled though by the man in the cab waving his hand out of the window at around the 18min.mark - do you know what, if anything he was signalling? Thanks Paul.
Thank you Diana. Yes, there are some more heritage lines that I have still yet to cover, like the Helston Railway and the Plym Valley Railway in this area. I have no idea what all that waving was about either! It happened twice - when the loco was running around at Bodmin Parkway and again at Boscarne Jct. Never seen that happen on any other heritage line. Take care, Paul
@ Thanks Paul. He was doing it for a long time😀
What a lovely way to spend a sunny winter Sunday afternoon - a vicarious train journey- fabulous. We have a number of heritage railways here in East Anglia, one of the best being the Bure Valley Railway that also has an adjacent walking path. Thanks again Paul for the views, the history and the vision to bring it all together.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the train ride from here in Cornwall. It is a really lovely heritage line. Take care, Paul
As Always Paul a really interesting and very well researched video! just amazing how you remember all this stuff. just amazing my friend. Brilliant! thank you! Best wishes Darren👌👍👍👍
Thank you Darren. Glad you enjoyed it. I just try and remember my lines after writing the script a few days prior to filming. Take care, Paul
