Hi Paul. jWorkmans wood used to be owned by the Workman family who lived in Sheepscombe and the trees were felled for the saw mill at Woodchester by the railway station opposite the wood yard. Now the windmill factory. When we were making the Woodchester layout we went to meet Mr Workman. The sawmill used to make the chocks which are hammered into the chairs to secure the rail. They also made telegraph poles for railways and the GPO. Originally horses pulled the logs on 4 wheel wagons and then traction engine and lorries pulled the loads. Where the chuck wagon is was the stables and later traction engine shed. Caroline.
Ah, thank you! That's very interesting. I didn't realise it was named after a person & a family. Fascinating background to it. Thanks for filling in the gaps. I will pin your comment to the top for others to read. Take care, Paul
This is what attracted us to England. The Beautiful Cotswolds and surrounding areas. Haven't got there yet but hopefully soon. Thank you Paul. Wonderful job.👍
Good Evening Paul and greetings from Poland Lovely to return to one of my favourite walks we did in 2022. Gorgeous weather, beautiful scenery, snow underfoot and a bright blue sky. Fabulous!
Good evening Michael! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed this walk, apart from the slightly slippery bits. The scenery was fab, I felt, and benefitted from the quality of the light on that day. Cranham is a rather special Cotswold village, isn't it? I can see why Gustav Holst was drawn to it. Hope you have a great weekend. Take care, Paul
Thank you! They really were stunning that day, and hardly anyone else was about. As long as you wrapped up, it was most enjoyable. This walk will really stick in the memory for me I think. Take care, Paul
another great walk. have done parts of it 10 years ago. Walked from Home to sheepscombe and then across to Slad and Stroud and back home along the canal. caroline.
Yes, it really is a wonderful walk with stunning landscapes, but we are also fortunate in having it so close to where we live Caroline. Unfortunately, it was too slippery to do a longer walk on this occasion, but the whole experience of walking in that light and snow was just magical. Take care, Paul
Thank you Faith. I really enjoyed that walk - although it was nice too to get home and warm up and have a nice cup of tea, Glad you enjoyed it too. Take care, Paul
Often areas "off the beaten track" can be beautiful and quiet, this area certainly fits that bill! Takes me back to my school days as we read "Cider with Rosie" as part of our O level studies.😏
Thank you Jonathan! Glad you enjoyed it. I did 'Cider' at Primary - Secondary was Shakespeare (which I struggled with and still do) and George Orwell, which I loved, especially his journalistic essays. Cheers! Paul
Since joining the channel I really look forward to a weekend ‘vicarious’ walk with you. Your filming, commentary and knowledge make the walk seem real and so enjoyable. Here on the far east coast we’ve had our first snow in November for about 15 years (the sea is technically still warm so protects the land somewhat). It’s so lovely to see the autumn colours glistening in a covering of snow in your part of the world.
Wow - great word - love that 'vicarious'. Glad you enjoyed the experience of an empathatic walk with me. Yes, snow in November is quite early isn't it? Can't remember the last time it was this early in this part of the world. I really enjoyed walking it too - it was most enjoyable. Take care, Paul
@ My personal interpretation of ‘vicarious’ means sitting on the sofa in the warm whilst someone else does the walking. Such a good way to enjoy the outdoors when the weather isn’t so good or it’s wet, muddy or dangerous underfoot.
Thank you Roy! My broadband went down yesterday - only just came back in the early hours of this morning. Hope you are having a good weekend and hope the cruise is going well. Take care, Paul
Wow Paul what a lovely walk, you've taken us on today the beautiful crisp scenery and amazing colours, above and below, we thought the colour of the beech wood leaves underfoot were just like an autumnal carpet thankyou for sharing this wonderful video and we look forward to your December walk just be careful if it's icy regards Gary and Julie Smith
Thank you Gary & Julie, Yes, I tend to be cautious by nature and I won't take risks to get a shot or some footage - there is always another day, but may not be by taking risks! I did thoroughly enjoy doing this walk though, despite the slippery nature in places. I do actually enjoy walking in the cold on a sunny day. Not so keen on grey wet days! Hopefully I will have another Cotswold one and a Lost Railway Walk out before Christmas - although most of my TH-cam efforts now will be going into producing some Christmas video content - the first of which I have already filmed. Take care, Paul
Glorious. My wife and I do this walk in summer but the other way round. Always have lunch at The local pub in Sheepscombe which makes the steep walk at the back of the pub even steeper!!
Thank you! Yes, two good pubs on this walk, and a third if you extend the walk into Slad too! I do love a late autumn walk, but it is difficult getting the conditions just right - apart from the slippery nature, I don't think I could have asked for better that day. Take care, Paul
I can only echo what the other commentators are saying- this is a beautiful video- a feast for the eyes! The spectacular views and the lovely beech woods!! I think you are right about the dew pond- the tree standing guard by it made it special! When I first visited the Cheltenham area I was amazed by the trees everywhere covered in mistletoe- nothing like that at all in our locale- very visible once the leaves have fallen. So glad you managed in such slippery conditions - thanks so much for filming this video!
Thank you Diana! Glad you enjoyed this snowy walk in the Cotswolds. Yes, there does seem to be a lot of mistletoe in the trees around here - I am not sure why that would be. I really did enjoy this walk, apart from it being a bit slippery. There will be an annual 'Christmas in the Cotswolds' video coming in December, all being well. Take care, Paul
Hi Paul this was a lovely walk! Lovely seeing the contrast of autumn colours with the scattering of snow! Nice hearing about the leaping lady that is Gladys! So annoying when you have to back track due to a wrong turn! Now that’s a pew with a view! Wow the sun through the trees is beautiful! Nice seeing the belted Galloways! Does look a little on the chilly side! Enjoyed coming along with you! Have a great weekend! Jill & Nick 👍
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed this walk. It really was a magical experience walking in this snowy landscape. Hope you have a good weekend too. Take care, Paul
Glorious walk! Your summary description sums it up admirably. The warm glow evoked by sunlight on the Autumn leaves contrasting with the shivering cold evoked by the snow and sound of icy blasts. What could better remind us of the transition from Autumn to Winter? Looking forward to another Cotswold walk soon. Thank you.
Thank you Malcolm! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, it really was a bracing and life enriching walk. I really enjoyed this one. Almost in winter now, (snow was early this year!) and I hope to do another in December, all being well. Take care, Paul
Great, beautiful video, Paul! Though there's no need to apologize for putting your personal safety first over looking at the camera. And I say this for perfectly selfish reasons, as I want you making more videos of your wanderings around the West Country! :)
interesting walk, looked chilly out there. It would've been nice to see a pic of Gladys' Leap, having enjoyed the album for many years. @6.30 is there any way to check if the marked path is no longer a public right of way?
Hi, and thank you for the comment. Yes, I filmed Gladys Leap in my original Cranham video - I link to it at the end. I could not film there again this time as the descent to the stream was very very slippery and I was concentrating on keeping upright! You can find it (Gladys' Leap section of the video) here: th-cam.com/video/s5VTJ-zMFE0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=jX2C425lQUX6Bf9X&t=403 I have reported the blocked right of way to the Gloucestershire PROW team - hopefully they will sort it. It doesn't affect the access to Gladys Leap, which remains open. Thanks so much! Cheers, Paul
What a gorgeous walk!! It was particularly pretty with the snow and the autumn colours combined! Sheepscombe cricket ground is very similar to the Lynton one in The Valley of Rocks!
@@SouthWestSundays Thank you! Sorry, only just spotted your comment. Yes those two cricket grounds are quite similar, aren't they? I really loved walking and filming this - despite the slippery conditions. Paul
