I used to work in the building next to where you filmed the opening shots. It was an insurance company in those days before the solicitors moved in. The river that flows under Castle Park and under the galleries exits under the bridge you were stood next too. One thing dominated the area and that was the smell. Not too unpleasant most of the time, it was from the courage building opposite and it was the smell of brewing. Some part of the brewing process was discharged directly into the river. The carp that used to be there were huge, looked a yard long and there were quite a lot of them. Must have been something very good to eat in the discharge. The road bridge further behind you suffered a direct hit in the war and it severed the electricity cable for the tram network. For whatever reason it was never reinstated and that marked the end of the trams. I bet so many people wish that concept in modern form still existed. If when you got to the road bridge you turned left, just a few yards down was the Bridge Inn which inside was about the size of most lounges at home. Must be one of the smallest pubs in Bristol. It was close to a number of big offices and it used to be a race, especially at 1pm on a Friday. Sometimes it was an incredible squeeze just to get in, if you could. For some reason they served Dark Star beers brewed in Sussex which were just fantastic. Cheers
Thank you Nigel. What a fantastic comment filled with great nuggets of information and lots of Bristol's history that I was unaware of. Thank you so much. Take care, Paul
Thank you Faith. Yes, those bombing photos of old Bristol are quite humbling and moving aren't they? Glad the site has been restored now. Take care, Paul
Hi Paul, I do enjoy these short bites, it's a great track to have chosen to accompany the photos. Always enjoy seeing Bristol, although I've been for work you rarely get to see much of the city, lots to discover. I'm glad you were able to complete the walk. All the best!!
Thank you David. I was glad to have finally got here - and I wasn't disappointed. There is a lot of Bristol I have not yet seen - hope to bring more videos from Bristol next year. Take care, Paul
Thank you Roy! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, great week here in Devon. Hoping to bring a couple of videos from here out next week. Hope you are having a good week too. Take care, Paul
If you got to the road bridge and turned right, I believe that the building which is still closest to the bridge was where the electricity cable connected to. You also have the shot tower near the bridge. Despite there being a number of new buildings, quite a lot of history still left.
Hello Paul. Greetings from Praski Hospital. Well that cheered me up. My laparoscopic surgery was a success but it's left me very sore and uncomfortable. Your superb video brought vibrance and inner city beauty
Good morning Michael. Glad the operation was a success but sad to hear you are left very sore and uncomfortable. Yes, I enjoyed my wanders around Bristol - it was a lovely evening. Speedy recovery and take care Michael. All the best! Paul
@michaelpilling9659 fantastic news Michael. I am so pleased and relieved . Thank you for letting me know. Hope you have a good weekend. Take care, Paul
Thank you Julie and Gary. Oh yes, there is much of Bristol that I have not explored yet. Hope to bring some videos about other parts of Bristol next year. Take care, Paul
Great photo support to the story Paul. Lovey bridge walkway.Good to see the old with the new- the church! Very colourful @3:50. Really liked the black and white photos. Castle Park looks lovely to visit. I enjoyed that. Thanks Paul. Have a lovely weekend. 👌🇳🇱🙋♀🥝
Thank you Anita! Glad you enjoyed it. Glad you liked the black & white photos too. It is a really interesting place. Hope you are having a good weekend too. Take care, Paul
Thank you Donna! Great to hear from you. Glad you enjoyed it. It is a very vibrant area - and has now spring phoenix like from the bomb site that it was in the 1940s & 1950s and decayed area in the 1960s and 1970s. Take care, Paul
Paul. You were brave filming in castle park. As someone who has lived in Bristol for many years. It’s become the most depressing graffiti drug ridden part of the city. It’s a wonder you didn’t get mugged. Lots of people avoid it like the plaque. Other than love your videos over the last year.
I actually felt safer here than Broadmead - that sadly seemed to have some dodgy characters and no police presence - unlike here. Castle Park had a real vibrancy to it - thankfully transformed from the second world war days and late 1950s, when it was very run down and bomb site filled. There seemed to be lots of students and media types (media quarter is over the bridge with BBC Natural History and Channel 4 based there) enjoying the evening here when I was there. I do hope to bring some other videos from different parts of Bristol in the future, as well as countryside and coastal too. Glad you have been enjoying the videos. Take care, Paul
I very much enjoy these ‘short bites’ that mix up your videos. Not everything has background stories! I like the new ‘serpentine’ bridge- not seen one like that before. Thanks Paul!
Thank you Diana! Yes, Bristol seems to have a few of these serpentine bridges now. I would like to cover this area in my depth as it is positively dripping in history. Thanks again, Take care, Paul
I can just remember walking through Castle Park on my first visit to Bristol in the early 1970's (by pre-125 diesel from Paddington). Subsequent landscaping seems to have much improved its appearance - and appeal - though it now seems more surrounded by high rises. I have not been for some years, but Bristol certainly now looks like a very vibrant city, full of cultural interest.
Thank you Malcolm - yes, I think Castle Park was landscaped in the late 1970s, and, although there is some urban decay and (unfortunately) fly tipping on the edge of the park, the park itself is very pleasant. I think the new media quarter (BBC Natural History, Channel 4, Graphic Design Companies) just the other side of that twisty bridge is giving it a new lease of life. There is a lot of cultural interest - and that is a theme I hope to pick up on in future videos from Bristol. Take care, Paul
Thank you Jesse! I actually felt safer there in Castle Park than walking around Broadmead Shops, which had several drunks when I was there, but there were a couple of police foot patrols around The Galleries and here - seemed to have a better atmosphere than the shopping area, but maybe because it was early evening. Amazing history - I must admit the photos of the devastation here during WWII were horrendous - I hadn't realised it was that bad. Thank you for watching. Take care, Paul
@@westcountrywanderings The time of day definitely makes a difference - in good light and in the summer it's fine. I find Cabot Circus is usually fine as they have plenty of security. Broadmead itself particularly early and as it starts to get dark less so.
@JessesGrandDaysOut yes, totally agree! Lots of places I would not feel safe after dark. Cabot Circus is usually a very safe area and well patrolled even after dark. Cheers, Paul
Hi Paul. helped out with a wedding at the nearby registery office a couple of years by conducting on a bus. on a saturday park is really busy. caroline
Thank you Caroline! Did they get married on the bus or hold the reception on it? I have seen that done on a London Double Decker bus....on a beach on The Lizard in Cornwall! Take care, Paul

Lovely video Paul, great Photos, it's hard to believe the devastation caused by the bombings isn't it? Best wishes Darren 👍
Thank you Darren - yes, I cannot imagine what the horrors of the bombing were like during WWII in places like Bristol and Plymouth.
Cheers,
Paul
It's a nice park but it has a bit of a bad reputation making it not great for families. The history behind it is fascinating though.
Thank you Jesse!
