Always good to see restoration and preservation work being done on the railways. Very important. Yes, I would imagine the beach is a really popular spot at the height of summer. Very pretty location. Thank you Paul.👍
Thank you Daryl! Yes, I am glad that this railway branch to the popular resort is finally getting some much needed investment. It will be good to have more frequent trains to here. The town is a bit overdeveloped, but the coastline and beaches (I think it has 6 or 7) are stunning. Thanks so much! Take care, Paul.
Hi Paul! This was lovely to see with all the updates to the railway and of course seeing the beach. That island is pretty impressive especially with the suspension bridge. Wow, the steps into the cave definitely conjures up thoughts of smugglers. Very enjoyable tour.
Thank you Donna! Yes, I have always been fascinated by that island. I still wonder about those steps in the cave leading to the tunnel - still no idea why it was used. Great to hear from you. Take care, Paul
Thank you Faith. Yes, it is an interesting piece of history there. Glad you enjoyed the train journey filming - so rare to have a whole carriage to ourselves! It was a very relaxing one from Liskeard. Take care, Paul
Another Great Video Paul, we really enjoyed watching it. You give so much Interesting Information, we look forward to seeing more videos from you and keep up the great work. Regards Gary and Julie.
Thank you! Glad you both enjoyed it. Yes, I will keep doing videos for TH-cam for as long as I am able to do so. Glad you are enjoying the channel. Take care, Paul
Thank you! I seem to have a vague recollection of a marker stone there commemorating the former Polish Camp at RAF St. Mawgan. Where I worked at RAF Portreath (about 20 miles down the Atlantic Coast) I learnt about the history from back in WWII, where many Polish and Czech pilots were based there, and flew from Spitfires from that airbase. Thank you for the comment. Cheers, Paul
Hello Paul. Greetings from Poland What a wonderful video. Lovely to be back in Cornwall again. The train journey to Newquay was made even better by the captions you added, telling us where we were and what we could see. How Newquay has changed! Progress? Not always a good thing I think. The problem is, is that money talks. The holiday season in the summer is quite short. In the winter months, places like Newquay "go to sleep". Great to see the redevelopment of the railway station. Forward thinking here. I hope the crowds and noise wasn't too much for you. Last but not least, thanks to Nicole for her help and assistance. It would be lovely to see her
Thank you Michael! Glad you enjoyed this video. Yes, I think Newquay is a complete opposite to St. Ives, as that place stays awake during the winter, and positively comes alive at Christmas. Newquay as you say, really does go to sleep. I was quite shocked at how Newquay had grown since my last visit just over a year ago - the rate of building is truly phenomenal, and, like you say, not always a good thing! I can usually handle crowds in very short bursts - we managed to escape to a very quiet cafe that my daughter found away from the main hubbub. Longer periods with very busy places are a complete no no for me. I could not have made this video in August! Nicole is very camera shy but you can see her a bit in the background in a few of the shots, like the opening scenes at Liskeard Station. I will keep trying to persuade her! Thanks Michael! Hope you have a good week. Paul
Thank you Jesse! Yes, I am not sure how long into the season the direct train from Bristol TM runs this year, but I think it starts again around early May, or possibly Easter next year. Be good to have more frequent and direct trains to Newquay from other parts of Cornwall as well. That's was the first time I was aware that such a service existed. Glad you enjoyed it. Take care, Paul
Hey Paul, this was a wonderful video, very much enjoyed a stroll around Cornwall's coastal town in Newquay! Bodmin looks a grand station, really well kept and I'm looking forward to a visit there hopefully this year to see the jail and the sights in Bodmin. Interesting to hear and see the history of the railway lines in Newquay, great to hear that they are renovating it though! The town with its old tram lines are super interesting! Enjoyed that walkway. Of course a massive draw to the town is the incredible beaches, that view is just gorgeous, nice to see in September now the crowds have disappeared. Fantastic and informative video, thank you Paul!
Hi Paul. Nice video of Newquay. I've never been to the station in Newquay even though we've been to the Asda,s many a time when we've been there. Loved the old pics of the station buildings & it looked a nice journey travelling there. We've walked on part of the tramway before but didn't know about the tunnel down to the harbour. Very interesting. I've got a lot of TH-cam videos to catch up on as we've been on 3 holidays in the last 7 weeks & I've been busy with other stuff as well. 😊😊😊
Thank you Martin. Hope you had a good time away from the Westcountry (unless you were on holiday in the Westcountry - in which case hope you still had a good time!). Yes, I am always well behind trying to catch up with other TH-camrs videos - never enough time! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, it isn't one of the best stations, for sure! It's definitely not a Temple Meads or a Bath Spa, certainly not a Bradford-on-Avon! Still the beaches and coast there are the best to be found anywhere. Happy filming! Great to hear from you. Take care, Paul
Hi Paul. interesting about your old stomping grounds. my former friends brother David Taylor who now makes childrens playgrounds but also is into old tractors. He runs the local show which has a fordson tractor display team too. Caroline
Thank you! Good to hear from you again Caroline. Yes, I have very many memories of living at RAF St. Mawgan, but I much preferred it when I moved out and rented a house in Truro. Cheers, Paul
Good to see vastly improved rolling stock and the new development at Newquay Station to accomodatre more services - hopefully also to the Midlands and beyond to replace CrossCountry services. The beach looks fantastic - though I guess it must get crowded in season. Thank you.
Yes, it is really good to see things finally happening on the Newquay Branch. It has been neglected for far too long, where other things have been happening on the railways in Cornwall. The station itself is bleak, and I really don't understand why the buildings were demolished in 1987 - it was only the end of the platform away from the buildings that was unsafe. I do hope the Cross Country Services can return - I think that was a business decision made during the pandemic - Newquay has bounced back in visitor numbers a lot since then. Yes, it gets incredibly busy here in August - hence why I don't make videos in Devon & Cornwall during that month! Although Newquay town itself is a bit of an acquired taste(!) there is no denying that it has some stunning beaches and coastline. Thank you Malcolm! Cheers! Paul
Hi Paul, What a trip down memory lane!! Mind you I'm sure I wouldn't recognise lots of the Newquay I knew as a little boy!! Our evening stroll was along the tramway into the centre of town our hotel, the Min y Don was nearby!! At the base of the little island there was a semi natural swimming pool for kids, I wonder if it's still there? I seem to recall that there was an aquarium on the harbour tunnel entrance back then, nothing fancy like there are today. Crantock is wonderful many many happy memories camping there and running down the dunes. Last time I was there we stayed at the Hotel which had a lift down to tunnel which led out onto the seashore. I think it's closed now. It's good to see the railway revival there. You shot some great clips through the windows. Big thanks to your daughter for helping you make this one. Really enjoyed it, well done All the best!!
Yes! I have a vague recollection of that Aquarium too David. I think it disappeared the second year I was there. You're right - Newquay has changed so much. Large apartment blocks springing up everywhere. Ah, I have a photo of that swimming pool - I will try and remember and put it on my community page on YT. Sadly it has a large crack in the side of it and doesn't hold water anymore. I have a niggle now that I didn't try and find the other end of the tunnel. I suspect it is long closed and filled in, and knowing Newquay probably built over. If you remember at the very start of the video there were some cyclists ("clear the bike lane" one of them says) well, they would have been about to head down the other end of the tramway - I wish we had walked down it know because it would have led to the location of the tunnel. Great comment - hope you have a good week! Paul
@@westcountrywanderings Hi Paul, you're up early!! I tried again this morning with no luck. I normally watch on my mobile in the afternoons and evenings and will write my comments in a separate notes app then copy and paste. This time I decided to comment from my laptop and it worked!! Your mention of the airport reminded me that my brother in law flew out of there, I think he was working on the Nimrods, not sure about that but I would guess that you may have been there at the same time. Thank you Darren. The odd thing about those steps is that they appear relatively new, say less than 70 years old, maybe. This would rule out anything to do with smuggling or mining, but I could be wrong. All searches have on the internet have, so far, drawn a blank. If I find out, I will put it in one of my monthly vlogs and on my Facebook Group. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Cheers, Paul

The Killacourt is how I've always known that area of land above Towan Beach, but I don't know the origins of the name. Great video and good to see Newquay Station is getting an upgrade and a second line....we don't visit often from our home in the Clays because Newquay feels very tired and grubby nowadays, apart from the beaches!
Hello, and yes, I agree with you about Newquay town - but you can't deny it has some of the best beaches in Cornwall though. Not for the Shuttle - they have a special lengthened runway at Fairford for their emergency landings. Thanks Paul (I got the impression you enjoyed the trip)
Thank you Diana! I am hoping to do Devon for a couple of trips next month, and hope to squeeze in Dorset too, and a longer Cornish travel session (weather permitting) later in the year. Yes, we both had a most enjoyable day here and the scenic train rides too, which seemed almost too brief. The runway at Newquay (where I lived for nearly three years at the former RAF St. Mawgan) is still, I think, the longest in Europe. Yes, the one at RAF Fairford (not far from where I live now) is also impressively long, and the USAF Tankers and other aircraft from Fairford are a familar feature of the Gloucestershire skies.
