Old Guy Firewood
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 19 ก.ย. 2021
I'm 75 years old and have enjoyed outdoors activities all my life. I grew up in rural upstate NY and always enjoyed being outside. I moved with my job in 1980 to North Carolina. I sat behind a desk every day, but I always had some type of outdoor side hustle. Landscape maintenance and firewood became my stress reliever from the pressure of my "real" corporate job. When I retired in 2003 I continued my outdoor hobby business and still love doing it 20 years later.
My channel will follow some of my daily activities... firewood, tractors, chainsaws, cutting and splitting, selling and delivering wood, plowing snow, landscape projects, etc. Of course any tips, shortcuts, successes that I can pass on will hopefully be beneficial to all ages of folks that enjoy and have a passion for the same things I do.
I have found the firewood community to be "my kind of people"... honest, hard working, compassionate and patriotic. Hope everyone enjoys the ride along with me!

Great job! Man that bucket is huge!! Merry Christmas 👍👍
Very good video,
Thanks for watching!
Looking forward to watching this one. Merry Christmas!
@@James....... thanks! If you decide to build one I’d change one thing. I’d use a black Rainbird valve. It’s the one on the gun I use in the video I published yesterday. It has more screws on the cover and I think it performs a bit better than the valve I used in the “build” video. Merry Christmas!
Thanks for the extra tip. I’m definitely going to build one. My poor shoulder isn’t happy with me when I underhand toss them into trees. Not to mention that it takes me a lot of tries!
@@oldguyfirewood Is the rainbird a CP100 or 100DV?
CP100
@ thanks!
Nice drop. Can we see a closer look at the device you used to shoot the pull line up in the tree? I’ve been wanting something like that.
Hi James. Thanks for watching. If you go to the last 20 seconds of the video there is a link to another video where I build an air cannon. That should answer all your questions!
@ oh, thanks! I missed that somehow
Nice job with that poplar. Some nice saw logs there. The grapple sure is a handy attachment isn’t it? I love mine. Good stuff.
Thanks for watching! Next to a bucket, the grapple is the best implement I have for my tractor.
Great video!! Nice felling!! Glad you had José for extra eyes in case the tree was extremely hollow. Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
Thanks David. I felt a lot better when I cut the notch and saw how solid it was at that height.
Merry Christmas to you and your family
Thank you Eric... same to you!
Great video Dick, glad you use caution and share with us your techniques for a secure cutting. Merry Christmas 🎄
Hey Larry... Merry Christmas. The older I get, the more cautious I get!
Love that big bucket!
Hi Larry. It has really made a difference!
Great job on that tree! Good idea to have Jose’ on site. Another set of eyes is always good. Have a great Holiday Dick and Jose’!!👍🏻👍🏻
I always try to have someone with me when I'm felling Todd. Bad things can happen too fast. Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!
Great Video!! I'm thankful everything went ok, but then again, old age and wisdom out does youth and skill every time! LOL. Thank you for bringing this to us!
That's my story too!
Hey Dick, hey Jose. Great job felling that huge Poplar. Merry Christmas to you all.
Merry Christmas Kenny. Thanks!
hi there great job on the tree.the green bucket i have is a big one , ,been telling people for years to get one if they could swing it , i an stack 1/3 cord in it stacked right , good show . best to all john
Thanks John. I'm loving that bucket... you're right, everyone should get one if they can.
Great video stay safe my friends and merry Christmas to you and your family and Jose and his family ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ and Clifford can’t forget the boss lol😂😂
Thanks John... Clifford is excited about Christmas haha!
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas Rick and Donetta!
Nice one Dick! Glad it came down safely and where you wanted it. That makes for a good day! 👍👍 Merry Christmas guys! - Tim
Merry Christmas Tim... Thanks for the mention on OWTM live! It's nice when they're on the ground!!
@oldguyfirewood you're welcome! The wood hound community is awesome! As a fellow youtuber, I can appreciate a good mention or shout out. 👍👍
What a Great video Dick.. I was thinking the same thing about the stump just as you said it. I'd love to come down and grind that stump. And we also have a Tomahawk material bucket. We picked it up right before Hoosier last year. Merry Christmas to you and your family. And also Jose and Clifford.
Merry Christmas Ted and Sherri. I'm loving that bucket... since you have one I'd sure you understand!
Well done. Couldn't have gone any better and having the extra hands makes for a productive job. Firewood and lumber is a great bonus as well.
Hi Russ. Poplar is a great mix in bundles. The milling is still new to me. I'll probably do some thick live edge slabs.
@ poplar makes great boards for trim as well. Merry Christmas!
And a merry Christmas to you and José.🎄
Merry Christmas Peter!
I'm certainly all went well! My friend was killed by a tree just like this one. The rot gave way and the tree kicked back, hitting him/pining him. He was alone and was not found in time.
You have to be so careful. Once I cut the notch I could see it was solid.
Hey Dick , nice Jo on the popular tree . Can’t wait to see the lumber from the mill . Merry Christmas 👍🏻🎄🪵
Merry Christmas Del. I like poplar to mix in with my bundle wood. The rest will probably turn into thick live edge slabs.
@ Merry Christmas to you and yours Dick . I mix the popular in my bundles too . 🎄
Merry Christmas & happy new year also to dick and Jose plus family’s on both side .
Thanks so much Leonard. Merry Christmas!
Good days work there Dick. I have a HUGE poplar here to drop myself…going to make a huge mess haha. Merry Christmas to you all 👍
Merry Christmas. I like poplar to mix in with my bundle wood. It should make some nice live edge slabs also.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!
Same to you. Thanks for watching.
No matter how many trees I cut down I always get an uneasy feeling about it right before i drop it, even more so with the dead ones or leaners. Glad you got that on the ground safely! The base of that thing looked terrible, def a job well done 👊
Hey Britt. I know the feeling... thanks!
Nice job dick. Glad Jose is back in good health. Have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year 🎊
Merry Christmas Bob. Hoping YOU are back in good health!
Nice tree felling 👍 I was afraid that tree was going to crack and collapse when you started cutting. Merry Christmas 🎄
As I was cutting the notch I could see it was solid. Prior to that I had the same concerns as you Lyle. Merry Christmas!
👍
Thanks for watching!
Hello everyone
Thanks for watching!
Hi Dick. Congratulations on 10k. Your great video didn't really fulfill its title. It only describes the purchase of the wood. How about describing how you package and resell it and whether that process makes you a bottomline profit.
@@stevemcclure3935 hey Steve. Probably a bad assumption on my part, but I figured everyone had a good feel for how much wood is selling for. Small quantities offer the greatest profit and $400/cord bulk sale would be worst case.
Nice job sir! I can't wait to finally do the 1/3 cord challenge!!
Great! Can’t wait to see it!!
Isn’t it nice to get someone who understands the topic and explains it well???
Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate your kind words.
Why not use candle wax?
You can definitely use candle wax but it is more expensive.
@@oldguyfirewood on sale !
A very simple fire starter is a "Pringle", yes a Pringle chip they burn well and cheap. 1-2 chips fires up our insert with no problem just light it and set it under the wood. The only trouble is not eating them all afterwards!
Never heard that one! I’ll have to try it.
Had my LX25 burned up in a mill fire last month. I got a new LX50 super. love it so far. Much better than the 25.
@@markb-axtonmx glad to hear that! I’m liking mine so far but I can’t seem to find time to run it!!
A nice fire is Sooooooo Mesmerizing 😊
@@kendriedger151 I totally agree!
WOW what an increase! That's a great option for your older tractor. that saved you a lot of money. Great video.
Thanks for watching. Hope you subscribed. Those cylinders have made all the difference in what I can do with that tractor.
The math was great, the proof was great. Good on you!!
Glad you enjoyed it. There should be no doubt after viewing this video. Thanks for watching.
Congratulations Dick! This might be a strange question. Is your dog a Chesapeake Bay retriever?
Thanks William. No, Clifford is a labradoodle. His hair is short right now because I just had him to the groomer.
Incredible price! I'd send a couple tractor trailers down at that rate. My cost of buying logs and producing wood myself is about that, so I'd double down on buying/reselling!
I’ve bought some more since this video. Inconsistent length and moisture content on the latest load has me concerned.
I use the white cups, and 1/8 sheet of paper towel that I have cleaned grease out of my frying pan. Maybe a couple of them and another crumpled paper towel I dried my fingers with after washing. So I have very little grease, I think its mostly paper and the wax paper cup. My question is, what if you just use a small amount of wax to glue the cedar chips in? Would it work with half as much wax in each cup?
Good question. I think it would work, but you wouldn’t get the same burn time that you do with my recipe. I would guess maybe 10 minutes vs. 28 minutes. That may be sufficient to start most fires.
Hi Dick I just came across your channel ! Nice video ! Wondering with those logs being pretty old ...what's the moisture like on those NICE inside pieces ??😊
@@kendriedger151 hi Ken. Thanks for watching… Hope you subscribed. The inside of those logs were solid but very wet. Wood just doesn’t start drying until after it’s split. While the moisture content is high, I suspect it will dry quicker than fresh cut green logs. It’s not “sap” wet but only “water” wet if that makes sense. At least that’s been my experience.
@oldguyfirewood perfect explanation !!
Congratulations 🎊🍾🎈
@@AmericanCountry716 thank you!
I wish I had a conveyor I'm pretty particular with my respits though I'd have to get used to it being there and not sending bigger ones up it. Looking forward to using the 7 way box wedge again on the big new Zealand.
There is enough time to pull the larger pieces back to resplit before they go up the conveyor. I just talked to Andrew this morning and I'm getting an 8 way to handle the smaller rounds.
Great job. I try not to waste anything. Not worried about a little punky when burning at home. I just bought a vertical splitter for this very reason. Bundle wood/punky wood along with my 1st log lift. The super splitter has too small a wedge for this type of work. The hydraulic splitter I own is just too slow.
A vertical splitter is definitely the ideal tool for this application.
Hi Dick, I congratulate you on 10000. Subs. You should buy that wood and not bother cutting and splitting anything. I have to pay 115.00 to 125. For logs delivered. Loggers cord equals about 2.25 face cords plus processing and then hold for 1.5 years or so. Dick buy buy buy. Have a great Christmas Holiday.
Thanks Al. The price is right but I just got a second load and there were a few problems. Inconsistent lengths and moisture reading from 17% up to 28%. The jury is still out on this one.
Congratulations on 10k! $170 is a great price for kiln dried hardwood! Good video. We recent joined the woodhound community!
@UpInTheNorthwoods thanks for watching and commenting. Welcome to the Woodhound community!
How can they buy the logs and dry it and sell that cheap, and make money
Hi Roger. It is a large family farming and logging business so they log their own wood. They have a really old large processor and lots of low cost farm labor. They also have a large wholesale bundle business (several thousand bundles a year) and I think that’s where they make their money
First off dick I’d like to congratulate you on hitting your milestone of 10,000 subscribers, good for you my friend and secondly that’s an awesome deal for $170 of oak honestly here in southern Ontario not far from Niagara Falls you could probably get $130 for a face cord for Oak so I think you got a hell of a deal. Cheers, Woody !!!
Thanks Woody. Selling in face cord or smaller quantities I should do well!
