Restoring the FIRST Star Wars Movie Poster
In this video, we linen-back and restore a rare Star Wars movie poster that was designed and autographed by Howard Chaykin. We address concerns and create a treatment plan for this unique piece of movie poster history, while chatting with Tony, the owner of the poster, to learn more about how it came to be.

I worked with the usual computer printers so watching a probably printed poster take some sort of liquid bath to be preserved is crazy for me. It's really cool to see the poster retain its ink or something that makes up its design... What an interesting material for its time... 😅
❤😍
That's absolutely amazing. You are very talented in what you do. What would you charge for that restoration?
Amazing
The youtube fed me one by another channel. Watched a couple. I used to make hand made paper. The minute he started using wall paper paste, I knew it wasn't right. Then, size 1 brush and acrylic paint to fill in the blanks. That isn't restoration, it's not even rescue. Down the road, the already acidic paper will react with the wall paper paste. In addition, wall paper paste allows molds, mildews and paper beetles. It also can let go when it gets too dried out. The first time I saw him lifting wet antique paper out of a water bath with no support, I cringed, it was an antique French Lithograph. Then he threw it on the floor to dry it overnight before mounting it. It was in worse shape than when he started removing the lining. Just because you have a catchy name doesn't make your work correct. I see this so many times on here. Restoration work needs to be done by pros like these with the proper methods and equipment.
What would be the approximate cost for this restoration?
I was absolutely stunned by what I watched here. It was nothing short of amazing! Can you give me an idea what a professional restoration of this poster would cost?
WOW 😮 😳
Spectacular job!!!
They look like they do nice work, although I have read some bad reviews with pics. My red flag is when i asked roughly how much it would cost to repair my item, never heard from them again. And before anyone says..."It depends..." They can definitely give a estimate.
We have received an influx of inquiries over the last few weeks and have had varying hours due to the holidays so our response time is a bit delayed. If you want to resend your email we will keep an eye out for it 😊
This is an artform in and of itself! Such a neat process.
I wish I would have kept all my blacklight posters from the 70s. I miss you, giant Zonk.
Born 1991. Growing up, it never crossed my mind what the theatrical movie posters of some of my childhood films could Have looked like. It was really fascinating to see them archived on the internet years later in my 20s, including Aladdin, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Anastasia, Roger Rabbit, etc. (And how the painting and style can change over the years).
nice, but i'd rather keep it original. even with the defects. would never want to restore damage like this. later || | || | neg ative1
You are doing great work! That’s my favourite movie.❤😊
Incredible!!
This Poster is over 40 years old. Nicely restored.
I am sure they know exactly what they are doing, but I feel they sometimes they are inconsistent. They dont do the same thing on each side of the paper. And they dont clean the plastic cover, when they clean the paper ? Etc But it is still very fascinating to watch :)
Prefer the before, framed under glass.
The problem is that it now looks like something i can get in a shopping centre for £10
Well this sure freaked me out 😅
Ohh, this video made my hearth melt with pure happiness as a Conservation and Restoration student-
Seen Australian pink Floyd last month with my ten year old daughter in Dublin , we wore matching t-shirts , it was awesome , I got my love for pink Floyd from my brother and father , and now my daughter loves them
I mean it's cool for a museum, but I also don't see the problem with just getting a reprint.
I’m so glad these videos don’t have one of those dopey a.i. Generated voice overs.
Looked better before it was restored, it looks like the process destroyed the poster weakening it's structural integrity, the Red bits of the bottom came off and parts of the image came out of line. What is the point of this?
it's interesting, but sadly, prismacolor pencils are not lightfast:( some colors will gray a bit and some will disappear completely over time
Bravo! Absolutely amazed me with her ability to restore this poster. I would never in a million years thought that poster would survive that washing process. Truly taught me a lot today!
I accidentally stumbled upon one of your poster restorations and was already fascinated. But this is on another level entirely and even though I don't know the people this belongs to, the people in the picture, what they mean to the owners of the piece etc., it's made me quite emotional. This is more than "just" crafts(wo)manship, this is an art in itself.
Did someone actually put a thumbtack in the top after all that?
Incredible!
I love this video, thank you so much! You did an excellent job
The touch up work is amazing!!
What a cool job! So is there something about the way it was printed that prevents the image from bleeding when water is applied?
That's an advertisement poster, originally meant to be thrown away. I'll never understand ephemeralia collectors. But hey, if you're getting paid to restore trash (as per definition), you do you I guess. I'll keep throwing away these things when I find them. 🤷♂️
So much merit in restoration for me of a cultural iconic print like movie posters, fascinating video.
How did all that water not ruin the poster! 😮😮😮😮
Hi, are you using a light spectrum filter when touching up the fold damage? ❤
Isn't there some conservation grade reversible varnish for paper that can be applied so it would protect it for the future like they do in painting restoration?
Beautifully done! Wow!
Wont ai do this?
This poster was not made to promote the movie. It is not a movie poster. It was made to promote the Marvel comic book series, which had already been agreed to before the movie was released. Chaykin was the penciler and inker on the original Star Wars comic, so this was just another piece of cover style art. Some speculate that potentially multiple covers were drawn for issue #1, and this poster was just one of the covers that didn't get selected and was repurpose as a poster. Some others speculate that several artists were offered the job on Star Wars and had to submit a piece of art showcasing how they would draw it. Chaykin got the job and they turned his piece into a promotional poster. Either is plausible. Star Wars #1 was released in April 1977, a few weeks before the movies debut in the theatre. According to Star Wars historians, it wasn't just 1000 copies of this poster that were made. 1000 copies of the poster were distributed to retail outlets across the US who sold Marvel comics. Later, additional copies of the poster were offered for sale at SDCC. As stated, it was a slow seller. At the end of the con, unsold inventory was given away. So more than 1000 copies were printed but the print run for the SDCC copies is unknown, so it is 1000 + more. Many believe it may have been another 1000 copies. Attendance at SDCC was around 3000 people in 1976 and they really thought enough people would buy this poster that it would create buzz for the upcoming comic and movie. If you didn't make enough, you wouldn't create buzz. If you created too many, you ran the risk of not selling them all. It's argued that it would have been more typical to order 500 of them, or 1000 of them. Another arguement is they would have known far enough in advance that they needed them for store promos AND Comic Con, so they probably ordered 2000-2500 in the same order. I'm in the camp that probably 2000 were made overall. And many probably were destroyed and lost to time.
wow!!!! so amazing!
great video but i have a couple questions. what is the mild detergent you use and the ratio to water? also, what adhesive was used to attach the poster to the board or is that the gelatin sizing again? and what is the bleaching agent you're using? thank you!!
Loved the video, however not a fan of the music being added. Would prefer no music or much much quieter.
Did not even know this was a thing, and instantly regretted tossing out some cool old posters while cleaning out my ancient in-laws house this year. 😮
You get an Owen Wilson "WOW"
Such attention to detail. Very impressive! Only tip I can offer is to put your 1-inch pencil marks as far apart as possible to get a more accurate line.
What in the Baumgartner?! Maybe there's a restorer out there like the guy from Toy Story 2 who does dolls🤔
So satisfying!
