Agree with Ryan, Ingroove Mike was a great advocate for the Tone Poet series at a time (Covid) when life was really shi%t) so much enrichment in my personal listening experience (and wellbeing). So many good titles. (Im not a vintage snob... Kevin Gray is hitting it out of the park!)
Thanks guys, great conversation. I completely agree with you about albums that get a little 'goofy' after a good start. Lee Morgan is guilty a little (not a fan of Taru) . I do love The Rahja from start to finish, wondeful listen with a positive uplift. Would love to do a livestream with you from a newbie UK perspective. Great to see you in a better place Ryan.
Also worth mentioning the success of the OJC series. For us in the UK, it's impossible to get good jazz records, the Tone Poets series and OJC's have been phenomenal (SAM records have also been hugely influential)

It's interesting to hear two young guys talking about jazz like old pros. And fun. As for perfectionism, it will not be achieved, but in the process of pursuing it you may hit excellence. I'd take that in a minute.

You have an impressive amount of jazz knowledge for such a young guy. I liked seeing these pieces of your collection. You mentioned not wanting to play valuable records too much so that they don’t get worn out. That’s what we used to have cassette tapes for! Get yourself a cassette deck and tape all your vinyl. Then listen to the tapes.

I'm sorry to hear you lost your grandfather. Condolences. I lost my dad about 5 years ago to Alzheimer's. That "See Autumn" was part of the Lighthouse concert. I just go into Louis Bellson a few months ago. I have that Alice Clark on cd....sounds good.
Kinda Blue and Time Out are obvious picks. Also Moanin by Blakey and Study in Brown by Brown/Roach. Cant stand Coltrane. His tone and phrasing are god awful.
Wow, I mean I can’t have a list without Kind of Blue or Time Out, personally I wouldn’t even have time out on the list because I don’t necessarily like it as much as others but given its pivotal role in getting people into jazz I decided to include it. Shocked that you don’t like Coltrane because he’s one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time and has most likely influenced your favorite musician in some element. Coltrane had a great tone that many tried to replicate, his phrasing definitely wasn’t normal or like anyone else but it was by no means bad. His phrasing is almost what he’s popular for, look at his writing and theory. The Coltrane changes might be one of the most influential elements in music.
@@amanandhismusic By obvious picks, i mean must have for any intro to jazz. I didn't see that you had Time Out on your list. Must have missed it. Coltrane sounded like he was tone deaf. No ear for melody. Innovation is not the same as musicality. You can push boundaries and have a sophisticated approach and still suck.

Thanks for the comment, I don’t like to think that’s why I have all the subscribers. I’ve never even asked anyone to sub in any of my videos, I pride myself in completing the John Coltrane discography and sharing my spreadsheet for it! I think that might be why I have more than you’d expect.
great job with the OG Blossom Dearie- this is on my list (have Japan and VMP) Gotta love Annie Ross!! Was recently at record store upstate NY and came across a OG stereo Annie Ross- a gasser! Paid about 20 for it VG++. I had a MONO pure pleasure, but always love finding clean VG+ or better orig or older pressing. Glad to see you have the Helen Merrill- self titled. I have the 1st mono repress in great great condition, blue back in VG++ both cover and vinyl. I paid 200 for it and thought this was the closest i'd get- sounds killer. take care

You did great with Blossom Dearie Comden and Green. I love my copy of that, mine is a very good VG+. I have only seen it once at a local record store in Brooklyn. Never seen it again. MONO copy.

Great choice with The Blossom Dearie, Alice Clark, and Ella. Blossom Dearie on Verve was when she was at her best (IMO). Check out Chris Connor, Nina Simone, & Helen Merrill

I just Visited John Coltrane's Childhood Home in North Carolina. They have a beautiful Statue of Him there as well.
One of my bucket list trips, got to see his Philly house a few years back but would love to go to NC and NY to see his other homes as well

There are 2 1/with Connie leaning against a tree trunk and with the MGM Yellow/Black label.Issued in 10th Aug 1959.2/re packaged cover and the Black label MGM issued in March 1962. The UK copy MGM C 782 substituted 1 track Cruising Down The River to Good Luck,Good Health God Bless You .

Some nice finds her. Always good to see some Blossom Dearie. As you may know, it was recently her centenary. I didn't hear anything about Ronnie Foster passing away. Are you sure about that?
I seen a post late last year about his passing but they were incorrect, checked with a few people and sources and he’s still alive. I apologize for getting that info incorrect, sorry to Ronnie Foster as well. Doing that makes me feel horrible, I’ll try and correct the video by cutting it out. Thanks for the support

Thanks for the support, live music is one of the greatest experiences out there. When a group can work together fluidly without hesitation it’s super rewarding. I’ve heard of Arooj Aftab from a few Spotify playlists but haven’t really listened to her music like that, I’ll definitely check her out though appreciate the support and recommendation!

So many great finds!!! That Herbies mat really is way excellent and a worthwhile upgrade from the standard LP120 stock mat. One suggestion might be to try putting the speakers further apart, maybe on those two side tables where your turntables are now, and then the TT's could go in the middle. Should open up the sound and give better imaging, esp for your stereo discs. Really enjoy Aidan's music too.

Death certainly is a huge part of life, each time I deal with it it seems to force me to mature in ways I never expected. I think it’s realizing that our time is limited and every day we wake up is and will always be what we make of it. Music certainly heals in ways almost unexplainable but jazz seems to be a genre that specializes in it. Thanks for the support and kind words, means a lot

Nice haul! I agree, the Rollins Way Out West is a quality recording. I think the late 50's stuff is a sweet spot for jazz records. I just like the way they sound on my system.
Are there any other specific records you favor on your system? Way out west is certainly a great demo record for whenever I have visitors not just because of the quality but the music too. Everyone loves Rollins, just wish my friends loved Coltrane the same😂
@@amanandhismusic Yes, check out the Riverside Records Contemporary Series reissues from Craft Recordings. I have several Chet Baker as well as Everybody Digs Bill Evans in mono that sound fantastic. I'm still learning to like the more progressive stuff. I just wish I could learn to enjoy my Ornette Coleman album. lol

Appreciate it, David Grisman is someone I definitely wanna dive into into the coming weeks. That record is amazing not just for him but for Tony Rice too bad his stuff is pricey. Love me some grass-jazz though if you had any other recommendations I’d surely appreciate them. It’s super hard to find more stuff like that because not too many people are into the mixture of bluegrass and jazz. Thanks for the comment and support!
