Hi. I stumbled on your channel some time ago. There was something very refreshing about seeing a young guy talk about his love of jazz and vinyl. There’s a few “older, big beasts” who have good channels, but there’s a lot of ego involved. Yours is free of that and the love for the music is palpable :). I was saddened when I heard about your tinnitus in the last video. When I got it, I couldn’t bear listening to music, I packed away my instruments and I was horrendously depressed for a long time. I mention this because years later (I was nearly 40 when it started), I am back enjoying music, playing music and even DJ as a hobby! It is not an easy and quick road, but time is the key I feel. Just try to have faith that the way you feel now will not always be the way. I was also encouraged by your approach to being healthy. I took up hiking and walking in beautiful landscapes here in Wales helped give me a new purpose and hope. The other thing is - tinnitus is a problem for millions of people. Perhaps things will advance with treatments in the future. Just try to think that the way you feel now may not be the way you feel for ever. A very beautiful and profound session of spirituals and standards.Recorded in 1964with fellow pianist Call Cobs and Henry Alonzo Grimes on bass represent the summun of his recordings. A masterpiece

Ryan, I always enjoy your vids. You have a very nice grasp of jazz, especially for your age. As far as the tinnitus I don’t know of any cure. Although I am much older I know it can be very uncomfortable at times. Maybe eventually they will find a way to deal with it. As I am writing this I seem to be in the midst of a swarm of locusts. I guess all you can do is to find a way to live with it. It’s hard though. Good luck.

I was just kicking back and listening to Wayne Shorter ("Etc." at the moment) after watching that three-part 2023 documentary ("Zero Gravity") about him on Amazon recently, and for some reason (maybe a transitory ringing in my left ear?) I remembered your bout with tinnitus, so I thought I'd check in... and here you are! It's amazing how much the human brain and body can adjust -- and "adopt, adapt and improve," as they say. (I'm speaking from experience as someone who's accustomed himself to all kinds of weirdnesses, temporary and chronic -- before, during, and after a heart transplant. I also had to do the low salt and sleep regimen thing. It's all doable.) You're probably somewhat stressed out now, and when you're under the weather, certain music can be (obsessively?) compelling, like what you describe with Johnny Mercer. Was it the Ella Fitzgerald Mercer Songbook you were listening to, or Mr. Mercer himself? "Ac-cent-tchu-ate the positive!" "Bluesy Burrell" is a favorite of mine, but I find Kenny Burrell in any format soothing and nourishing, if that makes any sense. From "Blue Lights 1 &2" to "Coltrane and Burrell" to "Guitar Forms" to "God Bless the Child," it's all nectar. I'm totally unfamiliar with that Albert Ayler. And I'd forgotten all about the Larry Young, which I have on CD. I should give that a spin...
@amanandhismusic regarding your tinnitus: have your doc check your insulin levels. Also Benfotamine should be researched as it is good at healing the nerve damage that might be the cause of your tinnitus.

I’ve never thought about the music obsession like that but it does make sense, whenever I go through a rough patch I cling to whatever artist I might be listening to at the time, I had been listening to Mercer himself this time around and probably for about the past year pretty excessively. I went through tons of hoops to find his old radio broadcasts and recordings such an amazing experience to listen to it all. Coltrane and Burrell surely soothes the soul! No doubt on that! Thanks for the support and advice!
Ryan- I missed the last couple of videos. Was the tinnitus connected with another condition or did it appear on its own? If it was separate, do you listen to your records at a high volume or at hours at a time? Was it suggested this could contribute to your tinnitus? Did you see an ear, nose and throat specialist?
Hey Eric! I got into an ENT back in late December and they were able to determine that it wasn’t because of loud sounds or anything exterior, it’s something going on inside my body that’s causing it. I do have to watch myself now though since loud noises can irritate it and cause it to get louder.
Hey i was watching your top 25 albums to get into jazz as im kind of new to the genre. Some great ones to check out i really enjoyed watching . What is the most relaxed jazz album you or anyone here can recommend? I love to listen at night and sometimes when it goes off it wakes me up. Love the start of ike quebecs blue and sentimental if that helps!
Appreciate it! I’d say the most relaxed jazz album I’ve heard is Clifford Brown with Strings which is 100% comprised of ballads each perfect for a quiet evening. But because you like Ike Quebec I highly recommend Billy Bauers - Plectrist, I’d check out the tunes “When It’s sleepy time down south” and “It’s a blue world” there’s no horns on the album but you completely forget that fact once you hear how calming it is. I’d also take a listen to any Coleman Hawking ballad but specifically “Smoke gets in your eyes” also in case you want more I’d look jazz standard ballads and use the songs to find your preference in players/tones it’s almost like an endless adventure😂 Let me know how you like that Billy Bauer album as well! Not too many people know about it! Thanks again for watching and glad I could share some albums with you!

This kind of jazz just melts me, I understand how technical and gifted the fast paced ones are but I've been on the search for some more space between the notes and that is just superb. Ryan did you get to the bottom of your tinnitus? Mine was caused from my teeth and jaw. I grind my teeth in my sleep i used to wear a gumshield in bed.
