I will be revisiting each year individually as I feel I can’t truly go in depth as I would like to do for every release. The spreadsheet will be the main resource here as it is highly organized and is guaranteed to contain everything you need to complete Coltrane’s discography as of 9/23/2023.
I wanna thank everyone who’s helped me achieve this goal throughout the past 4 years, the people I’ve met have helped me immensely throughout this process. I will be uploading a video later this week where I show you how to use my spreadsheet and all of my documents including the Recording dates document which will be live 9/25/2023.
My main source for this video was the Coltrane reference guide but 10 to 15 % of my discography includes additions and edits that I’ve discovered and made.
If you have any questions or concerns feel free to email me at johncoltranediscography@gmail.com
If you think I missed something let me know and I’ll show you where you can find it among my listed releases.
Thanks for this awesome map of Coltrane's work! I realize I only own a very small snippet of his art... When I first listened to "Alabama" at this TV-Broadcast I was instantly highly moved. I bought the Live at Birdland Record but was wondering if there is anywhere a longer version of Alabama available; and put this question to a real specialist. I had the feeling it had a much longer intro at this TV broadcast... Keep going!
Awesome question! Something I totally regret not making note of in the video! I’ll pin this comment so others can see as well! Original pressings have have a version of Alabama which are takes 4+5 “(5:05)”. Pressings from 1965 and onward only include take 5 “(2:23)”
Spectacular presentation of John Coltrane's music!
I thought my collection of 100 Coltrane records was big but yours is incredible. congratulations
great video as always, you have a awesome John Coltrane collection 🙂 greetings from Australia!
Well done man. Great stuff, really impressed.
Well done! A fantastic job and great historical record for the future. Thank you so much!
No Problem, I’m super glad you enjoyed it! Hoping you can find some of the releases you’re after! Thanks for the kind words!
“I tend to have a lot of Coltrane.” is the understatement of the year! LOL Your knowledge level and collection are both very impressive! Thanks for posting, Ryan.
excellent
The video is here! 🎉🎉🎉
A huge thanks for creating this. I can't even imagine how much time you spent on its production. Kudos to you Ryan, I don't think there's anything else like this on TH-cam.
No problem Dave! I can’t even imagine myself, initially I first aimed for his studio albums but then I found myself looking for more and I started researching all the releases and bootlegs I could to make sure I have all the dates available. Thanks for the kind words as well, hope you can find the releases you’re after!
Congratulations on this magnum opus, Ryan! I haven't even finished watching it yet, but I'm so impressed I had to take a second to chime in. (BTW, I don't recall ever seeing that photo of Coltrane at the Guggenheim before. Love it!) OK, back to the discography video... !
Thanks! That’s one of my favorite pictures of Trane! Coincidentally Frank Lloyd Wright is also my favorite architect!😂
WOW
Thank you for doing this video! Just added a bunch more titles to my Coltrane wishlist. Much respect!
No problem! Hope you can add them to your collection!
@@amanandhismusicThanks Ryan. Me too! I'm slowly getting there. I don't often come across much of the earlier sideman stuff in the discography at an affordable price where I am in the UK but I'm always on the look out. There's just something a bit magical about Coltrane that gets you in the feels and I can't get enough.
There's stuff here I never heard of. We tend to focus on the better known titles, and start with the "later" stuff ("Lush Life" as an example). I didn't know the 78s and 45s existed. Good info, Ryan!
No problem Charles! Hope you find some of the ones you’re looking for!
Ryan this was beautiful . I really appreciate the research and dedication man I learned even more about his albums and participation with other artist releases. Well done Ryan definitely for us “ Trane “ lovers . Long alive Trane 🎷
Thanks Lovell that means a ton! Besides his studio works I feel like the most intriguing part of his career was the early 50s with all of those Blues artists, his solos are crisp and he sounds way ahead of the pack! It’s clear to see why Dizzy wanted him in his band so badly😂
Congratulations, you are doing good work! I’m not all the way through, but I wonder: now that you’ve finished the completion part of your journey, are you gonna travel down the rabbit hole of first pressings, audiophile pressings, etc.?
GREAt question.
Thanks Rob! I definitely want to veer in that direction but I think I may take a bit of a break in terms of additions in my Coltrane collection, I only showed a little over half my Coltrane collection in this video so I think I’ll try downsizing it first and then slowly buy near mint originals. For Coltrane I’ll probably only grab audiophile pressings if they’re recent, the acoustic sound series has really impressed me but I may try out some of the new Atlantic reissues once they release as well.
GREAT job. Keep it up.
Super proud of you brother! I’m glad you finally got this out! Thank you for doing this for the community!
Thanks! It’s definitely been a long time coming!
impressive collection and knowledge of obscure facts about the recordings. Shows your passion for the man and his music.
Thanks man for doing excellent work, and it is very cool with vinyl LP collection.👍
Thank you for making this!
Epic Coltrane collection!! How long did it take to complete this collection? There are some box set I will get.I would like to see how it looks all together on your shelf. Thanks for sharing!🎶🎶🎷
Thanks!! It took about 4 years but I really got into it 3 years ago, in my next video I’ll add a clip or few pictures to the beginning. I only showed about 65% of my Coltrane collection in this video so you can expect I ran out room on my shelf😂
@@amanandhismusic … But wait there’s more?!?!😳🤣 Wow! Can’t wait to see the next video!
Also, are you familiar with the Coltrane documentary, Chasing Trane?! Excellent documentary!
Let’s goooo 🔥🔥
i think he may be a john coltrane fan
Thank you for your hard work Ryan!
…I’m guessing Lord Vader is not a Trane fan?!
No problem! Thanks for watching! I’m thinking Vader might be into heavy metal!?
Ryan
I couldn’t finish your video yesterday but this may be a title in the Trane discography that gets overlooked. It’s Cannonball with Trane, Wynton Kelly, and the great Paul Chambers in a supporting role. It’s on Everest Records FS-261. Let me know.
Paul ( new to your channel but loving it! )
It’s just called Julian “cannonball” Adderly with guest stars.
Complete with incorrect spelling
Thanks Paul! I know which release you’re talking about! That one contains 3 tracks off Adderley in Chicago which is with Coltrane but features one song which Coltrane isn’t on. More or less it’s a compilation but a really good one! Thanks again for the continued support!
I came across a CD from Essential Jazz Classics called "The Dealers: The Complete Sessions". Would getting this mean I wouldn't need to get The Dealers, Wheelin' & Dealin' and Wal 2? Thanks for this video!
What is your opinion of the records made with his later quarter of alice coltrane jimmy garrison and rashied ali
I love them! Some people give them a lot of flack but I think that group was just as good as the quartet. Stellar Regions is probably the best example but listening to that will send chills down your spine. My favorite thing about that group though is they didn’t just go into each song as free as can be, they flowed into it which makes it perfect for anyone who’s trying to get into that period of Coltrane. Interstellar space and Om on the other hand didn’t have the same structure any of Tranes groups had so those are definitely harder to ease into but they’re still some of my favorites.
What an accomplishment congrats! Man, I wish I could find that headless hawk set, I’m slowly becoming a dolphy completist. Are you by any chance?
Thanks! Not particularly but I would definitely like to grab more of his live stuff, I’ve got the studio albums but my favorite recordings were from his stints overseas!
@@amanandhismusic I just found “complete last recordings” boot of last date with a whole bunch of live stuff from that time, it’s awesome!
Why are your CDs still sealed ? Do you not listen to them ?
Some were duplicates and some I had digitally but had gotten them in recently and just didn’t upload them to my computer like the first steps and the cafe bohemia CD
