What silk/floss do you have collected in the background there? On the racks
What is the stone you rub on the silk tag
It's a jewelry burnisher. You can find one on Amazon for about $8. They work very well for smoothing out silk!
What is that stone you use to rub the silk?
Do you think any of the Alec jackson hooks would work for this ? Any specific model ? For the hen hackle would it be best to just buy a variety pack or a small saddle/ cape portion? Would you go for the biggest size I could get for that size hook?
Can I ask what brand and type of Japanese silk you're using ? This is awesome
Of course. I use Kyoto silk. You can find it on etsy
@flytyingwithrichlamonte understood , I have a bunch of kimono silk I wonder how similar they are I know kimono is supposed to be similar to pearsalls. I had one other question is there an easier salmon or spey/dee pattern you'd start with for display tying ? And for that pattern is there a hook you'd suggest ?
Do you wrap that heron in front of? Or behind the flat tinsel?
The heron us wrapped on the rear of the flat tinsel.
Hi Rich: I still enjoy watching your post on TH-cam. Hope things are well for you. 😊😊
Hey Frank. Things are great. I'll be back to making videos soon. Stay tuned!!! Great to hear from you! I hope things are well with you as well!!
@@flytyingwithrichlamonte Hi Rich: I’m really looking forward to more of your videos. I’ve missed your posts, but understand why that had to happen. All the best! 😃😃😃
What kind of body floss do you use?
I mainly use Kyoto Japanese silk.
@@flytyingwithrichlamonte Thank you. What kind of material do you use for the white base? I want to study more
For that I use wooly nylon. It's available on Amazon in large spools. 1 large spool will last you many years.
@@flytyingwithrichlamonte I'll check it out! Thank you
Your very welcome!
Little tip for folks who fish flies w/ floss tails or veils: When it gets all matted and clumpy after catching a fish or 2, there are enzymes in your saliva that will help break down the mucins and glycoproteins in fish slime. At a distance, it may look like a pagan ritual - but I think (hope) it's backed up by science.
Danville 6/0 seems like maybe an odd choice for the head. It gives about the crudest finish of any commercial tying thread. That said, I use it almost exclusively b/c it's much more forgiving for tyers with hand-tremors and/or cheap bobbins. I have to whip finish after just about every stage of the fly for insurance. ;)
I would agree totally tho at the time that I made thos video inhwas having a hard time finding any larartun, or veevus in red. Also being a fishing fly and jot a display fly, the Danville does serve the purpose and get the job done. For display lies inwould recommend something like a white or red veevus, or lagartun with a red varnish.
Beautiful fly. Where did you buy the amgold feathers for the wing?
Thank you! I just got lucky. A local shop had received a collection rom someone that passed away, so I bought most of the collection. There were 2 tails in there. Coming across amgold us usually a luck thing. Keeping an eye on ebay is your best bet. They pop up a couple times a year.
Thanks for the tip. I’ll try that.
Hah still getting the good tips from ya Rich
Hi, Rick. I just found your channel recently and I am quite impressed with your skill. I hope you are well and will be making more videos.
Hey Steve. Thank you for subscribing. I will be making more in the future. I have taken some time off to start a guide service. But I will be back!!! Until then please check out the videos I have. Lots of great info. I still answer questions and am willing g to help. Thank you again!!!
I enjoy very much your tying and learning some new interesting technics. Thank you!! Cheers!!!
Is the black thread wax you use Cobblers wax and how do you make it into a ball? Thanks
Yes tat is cobbler wax. When I buy it it's typically very hard. I leave it in the bag it comes in and I just sit on it for a while as I'm tying. Eventually it warms up and becomes plyable. Once it is plyable, you can wad it up and roll it into a ball.
@@flytyingwithrichlamonte Thanks
Any time!!
Hello Rich, I live in Central illinois about 3 hours from Chicago IL . Ive tied low water salmon/ steelhead flies for some people and they seem to have some luck catching those species on my flies. I have some books that have salmon/ steelhead flies in them. Looks like a ton of fun and keep on tying. Have a wonderful day
true , but I like how it came out . Interesting to see how it would behave in the water
I have thought about that. It was strange to tie. But as you said would be so interesting in the water
How do you store these small feathers and how are they attached to those small cards? Thanks love your videos.
I store the feathers on the cards in a bag the same size as the cards. I just keep them in an old cigar box with only the special feathers. The feathers are held to the card by a piece of scotch tape. Nothing fancy. Just tape them as close to the base of the feather as possible so not to damage any of the feather itself.
In one of your videos you used a floss burnisher looked like polished stone what exactly was that? Thanks
The burnished pretty much is polished stone. If you go on to Amazon and look up jade jewelry burnisher it should pop up. They are less than $10. Very nice tool to have!!
Just saw the FB announcement from April. I will really miss your tying videos. I started into CSC’s a few months ago and they have been a huge help getting started.
I will be back to tying with more videos. Hopefully late fall. I'm just working on new things in my life. Thank you so much for following and being a part of the channel!!!!
@@flytyingwithrichlamonte great to hear, hope all goes well in the coming months.
Whilst Im genuinely amazed at the extraordinary skill and patience demonstrated here, certainly I couldnt match that ammount of expertise but I have to remind my self what we're trying to create. An artificial lure to tempt fish. Crudely put I know but its a fact...
I like the small head . It looks more elegant to me , and despite any other mistakes it reflects / suggests economy and efficiency
I learned a lot about spey style in general with the heron and tinsel process
So glad to hear that. There is a lot more to spey flies but this is a good foundation for a good spey fly!!!
I subscribed to your great channel and have been watching for hours on end learning from you. Much appreciated for the knowledge you are passing on and am glad to hear that you are doing so well after your surgery! I have a couple of quick questions if I may? What lighted magnifier are you using or recommend? I once had an older all metal one that used a small appliance incandescent light bulb that I loved and can no longer find one like that after it bought the farm. Would you also consider doing a Material Monday on Jungle Cock repairing splits and mounting. I have been having some issues with mounting them on the hook straight and at the correct angle, especially when trying to cascade a few at an increasing height, like on the Jungle Don. Thank you from the great state of Maine and keep up the good work!
Tha k you for being a subscriber and for the kind comment. Tho I want to inform. You that I will not be making more videos for a while. I have started a fly fishing guide service and have been quite busy. But later in the year I will continue to make more videos. In the mean time please enjoy the videos I already have up. There are many to watch!! Again thank you!
I have it too......IPF....let me know if you are doing any new treatments and what is working? Not working?
I'm so sorry to hear that. Such an awful disease. I actually received a double lung transplant in August. I'm doin great. Back to fishing and walk 7 miles a day. The best thing is to make sure you have enough oxygen to keep your blood o2 above 94%. Ofev or esbriet. The can slow the progression. If you have a concentrator, make sure to have the humidifier canister full at all times. AYR gell for a sore nose. Ample amounts of protein and calories to keep your weight up. Exercise and walk as much as your body will allow. The more you use your lungs the better. If you have more questions please don't hesitate to reach out. My email is richlamonte@hotmail.com. My most sincere wishes Rich
Looks like Glen Grant, but there is not original tying Glen Grant!🤐Sometimes I had been talking obvious things, but it will be better if I keep the silence! Cheers, Aleksandr.😎
Great job Rich. I’ve tied a few, but w/o the herl head and the turkey for support. I need to try a few like this. Love the way you finished the head! 👍👍👍👍
Tha k you so much!!!
Great video! I've been looking for a good burnisher and am wondering what you are using for yours? Thank you!
I think all of these methods have uses, so thanks for the demonstration Rich. I like 1&2 best as I don’t need to fight with marrying the feathers, and blended colours just look better to me for fishing. Thanks again! 👍👍👍👍
Awesome! Thanks Rich! 👍👍👍👍
Good review of shaping! 👍👍👍👍
Very helpful Rich. Thanks! 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Rich. Great instructions for mixed wings! 👍👍👍👍
Hi Rich again very beautiful . I'm still collecting materials so here is my first question . I would like to know how thick the silk gut is ? do you use different thickness ? I can order natural silkgut but it is by thickness so I thought let's ask Rich
Hey Ronny, I acquired a rather large amount of silk gut that is all 1 size so I have just used that for all my flies. I find that it works quite well. Having it too thick can create large bodies where it is not necessary. For fishing flies its better to use twisted monofilament. It's stronger and will last longer in the water. For that you can use different thicknesses. 4lb, 6lb, 8lb. I save the silk for artistic/ framed flies. Especially since gut is becoming harder to find and is expensive.
@@flytyingwithrichlamonte Ok thank you now I know what to do I like tradition
Lots of good advice! Very helpful Rich. 👍👍👍👍
Thank you Frank
incredibly beautiful , Thank you for sharing so much knowledge . I am trying to have a go myself thanks too you except this is still out off my league lol , so I'm going to try the lady Amherst first and I have already a few questions all in good times Rich , very very beautiful
Thanks man! Don't be afraid to ask any questions. I'm always happy to help!!!
Awesome fly Rich. I like the blue background! 👍👍👍👍
Beautiful work. Inspired me to try as well.
Hello Rich, generous giveaway. I was wondering- where can one get the materials to tie classic salmon flies? (I live central US). I can’t find much online and fly shops near me don’t have much , especially in terms of hooks and jungle cock.
Thats so cool.
Excellent work and beautiful fly! (it's not the P-T recipe though).
Congratulations Mark! What an amazing prize! 👍👍👍👍
Congrats Mark!!! Generous giveaway!!!
Congratulations Mark. What a fantastic prize.

Congrats Mark, I am sure these will look perfect at your fly bench.
