Hello Rich, I live in Central illinois about 3 hours from Chicago IL . Ive tied low water salmon/ steelhead flies for some people and they seem to have some luck catching those species on my flies. I have some books that have salmon/ steelhead flies in them. Looks like a ton of fun and keep on tying. Have a wonderful day

Very informative as always. Would the spey hackle make a good heron sub.?

Timothy you could use it and I do use it but it's very sort and whispy, so isn't really like Heron.
I take it you can't get Heron ? If so you'll sometime get Asian Heron or swamp Heron are all good subs, as is Blue eared pheasant

@@davidkerr2285 I have seen heron for sale at several places. I was just curious if the spey hackle would make a good sub. Just trying to increase my knowledge.

Spey hacked as David said is much shorter and whispier than heron. Heron is stiffer and has a certain flow to it. Blue eared pheasant is a better heron sub. That's a little stiffer but still not much compares to heron.
