Another great materials video. Thanks Rich. Can you do a video on rejuvenating feathers? You referenced steaming the silver pheasant to correct the curl. I saw the one on steaming tippet feathers but I’m hoping you can expand on correcting less than ideal feathers or slips for marrying.
I would be happy to do a video on that. I'll use Amherst, the silver tail and some golden pheasant. I'll look at some other feathers for winging as well.
@@flytyingwithrichlamonte thank you, I’m a few flies the hobby and realizing how hard it can be to find materials ready to tie out of the bag for Salmon flies. The golden tail prep videos really helped me get that waterfall I wanted.
This was a great video! I actually have some of the Amerigold pheasant feathers that were given to me years ago. I do not have tail feathers though. I looked up Argus pheasant feathers. A matched pair of wing feathers is not too bad but the tail feathers are a bit high. Still I am tempted! For some reason, pheasant tail feathers are something I am addicted to. Even the Chinese Ringneck feathers are addictive! I admit to having no will power at all.😂
Some feathers such as pheasant tails can't be ironed. They have to be washed and steamed a bit differently than others. I know the iron is a great way on a lot of feathers however don't own an iron so I demonstrate the way I do it so those without an iron can see another way of getting it done.
I usually keep them in a vase. It keeps them in the open, keeps their natural shape, and prevents damage. Unless you have cats. Then caution is needed. Lol
Hey Rich - what is your storage solution for these super long feathers? I haven't found a container I'm crazy about and just leaving them out makes me a little nervous.
Hi Rich. it’s difficult to find very large feathers. what is the correct fiber length corresponding to the hook sizes? It is also difficult to find feathers that are symmetrical with an identical length of fibers on each side. how do you find them? can we make the two wings of a fly with the fibers on the same side of the tail?
Good question! Its kind of a long answer so on Monday, I will make a video all about hook size and fiber length. I could jusybwrite it out but I think its a good informative video that many others should see. So ill get that together for you for monday!!
Also as far as using the same side of the tail, some feathers you can do that with. Typically turkey is the easiest to achieve this. But when it comes to pheasant tails, its not likely to work well. The barbells (the velcro that holds slips together) are so small and not as "grippy" as say turkey or kori. The more you mess with them the less grip they have on one another. I order my gp tails from feathersmc.com. he pairs them up beautifully so you have even length on both sides
@@flytyingwithrichlamonte Thank you for the link. In France, salmon fly tying is very rare and there are no specialized shops in this activity and the tails are not sold in pairs ☹️
remember you before your surgery and at that time you said working around the feathers was a cause of your disease, and you were wearing a mask when tying. What precautions do you take now to protect your new lungs?
Hey Larry, So working around feathers is not the cause of my disease. My disease was hereditary. But working around feathers could be dangerous if im not careful. My s Disease was called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The disease caused by feathers is called hypersensitivity pneumonitus. They both cause scarring of the lungs, the cause is just different. People with sensitive lungs, those more susceptible to disease, and those with lower immune systems (such as transplant patients) do have to be more cautious. I am just as cautious with materials these days. Anything new is immediately cleaned, steamed and packaged. Anything that can't be cleaned right away is put aside in a seperate bin until I can clean them. A specialized mask is used during cleaning, steaming and sorting. Anytume a fly is being tied, all the materials are selected, clipped, removed from any skins and are sized accordingly. Then an N95 mask is worn during the actual tying and recording. I wash my hands before and after any fly tied or feathers are handled. Nothing is left out, and all packages are put away after tying. I also have a purifier next to my desk. Once im done recording any videos, that gets turned back on. I turn it off so the camera doesn't pick up the noise.. its kind of loud. Just s many preventative measures as possible!
Thank you for your reply and info. I'm so glad you are still with us. You were the first fly tier I came across on TH-cam before I started tying flys and I hope someday to create a fly close to your level.
Thanks Rich for sharing this info. The material Monday's really helps novice like myself understand the broad topics as like the pheasant tails.
Thanks again for making me smart on these feathers Rich. Have a great week!
Looking forward to a live video from you!

Thanks, very informative ! Would like info about care and storage option for these types of feathers . Original packaging quite destructive ! thanks

By the way, you do a fantastic fly.

I just stick them in a vase next to my desk. They hold their shape pretty good and I haven't had any issues. Been doing it for years
