To me it's strange, wanting something one of a kind? That isn't what I expect from MTG. Where I did want some original I went to Warhammer- I wanted a truly original one off leader for my Warhammer army, So I learnt to sculpt... And designed my own. As for MTG , it's not the game for that. I don't want my MTG cards to be unique - I want them to be effective and to look cool.

Regarding some kind of bracket system, currently, the only "brackets" that work are EDH vs cEDH. The whole power level system does not work. And I think the proposed new bracket system will fail for the same reason: it's too complicated. So here are the two options that I think might work. The first option is we have brackets based on the intention and gameplay, like EDH vs cEDH. And we already do this now. I hear people say, "I'm going to play my low power deck" or "I'm going to play my high power deck". The particular cards in the deck don't really matter; it's what the deck is designed to do that matters, like EDH vs cEDH. The second option, if we really want to focus more on particular cards, would be to just bracket the commanders, not every single card in the deck. So maybe some janky commander that isn't powerful would be bracket 1 and the most powerful commanders would be bracket 4. And then you could put any cards in the 99 that you wanted. People already do this as well by saying "I'm going to play Lathril" etc and then other people might try to find a similarly powerful commander. They wouldn't even have to bracket every single commander; all commanders not bracketed would by default be bracket 0.

I love how even in this round, where I should've gotten many free points cause a lot was obvious, I just wasn't in the right state of mind and only got the Sol Ring and next question right. Literally everything else I screwed up. And that was while pausing this video to watch things recommended before coming back to it, so you'd think I could hold onto a few channel names, but nope.

At this point they might as well start releasing Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh sets. In contrary to the other crap, this would at least be genuinely interesting.

I’m someone who’s been playing for nearly two decades but almost exclusively edh that entire time. When they started ramping up the number of sets per year, I just stopped keeping up. As universe beyond has become more prevalent, I have stopped paying attention. Nowadays, I just play the game with whatever cards I already had unless I see someone at my weekly magic playing with something I find really cool. It’s sad in some ways, and I share and agree with most of the points made in this video. For me, though, I just get irritated by power creep, and how so many cards are so obviously made for commander. For me, a significant part of the joy of the format was taking these cards that didn’t really work in modern or standard, and finding ridiculous ways to use them. Now, a lot of cards feel like they have a giant neon sign reading “use here, like this” Or you get abominations like fierce guardianship and deflecting swat and their ilk.

I am glad wotc is giving collectors something to waste money on, freeing up the rest of the market for others. I think regular staple cards that are already pricey would be even more expensive if there weren't other versions for fat cats to throw money at.

This video puts all of these ideas together very succinctly. I can't help but agree with your points. From a game I have spent so much time on it sucks to see the way hasbro has handled it since the acquisition. Another aspect for me has been the rampant power creep in the past couple years where seeming every card can snowball and you have to two for one with every spell. Keeping up with every new set the pushes the previous one out of relevance is really exhausting. I was hopeful with the release of timeless on Arena but it just became the secondary Modern Horizons format.

It was completely unnecessary to preface your video by minimizing your grievances and degrading yourself, equating your valid points to a petulant child throwing tantrum. Have a spine and say it with your chest. This stupid card game is going down the shitter.

You actually put your finger on an important point - MTG isn't bad because it's woke, the wokeness (depending on your taste) isn't even close to the top of the list of problems. The problem is a game that seems creatively bankrupt.

I didn't play Magic in over 5 years and just recently started again with Commander, and oh my god was it a shock to see all those new cards that come from random franchises and don't belong in magic at all. A lot of them have decent rules and work, but it bothers me to just look at the cards

I think the big issue with Battles as they are currently is that most of them are incredibly weak for their casting cost (plus the effort to flip them). If the reward on the flipside was insanely good value, then the defending player would have an actual incentive to prevent you from flipping it. That being said, you've converted me to agree that the language/terminology around Battles is very confusing in multiplayer formats - I've only played with them in Standard, so I hadn't thought about that play situation at all.

Just wanted to add a lil anecdote to this video. I just came back to the game after being gone for 12 years and boy has it been overwhelming lol. I have been going to the local card store and met someone who just started playing magic. Super nice young man. He is very new, still learning the rules and whatnot. He is playing an assassin creed deck. The whole thing is all assassin creed cards and he really likes assassin creed. Outside smoking, he brought up being a fan of moist critikal. Charlie plays magic now apparently, this kid likes assassin creed and Charlie. I guess that’s who this is for? Idk lol but I guess with the whole Universes beyond junk, this is what wotc (hasbro) is going for? This exact kid is probably who they have their sights locked onto? Idk just wanted to add a bit of info to this video

passion for corporate products lol. Man it is more healthy for you to stop buying from a company that does not want you as a customer! What are you even doing at this point? Boycott them if you don't like their products, complaining about it won't change their sales strategy, but your money will.

Where are the competitors? There has to be amazing devs, artists and entrepreneurs who could give MTG a run for their money.

They have entire sets dedicated to other cultures; Asian, Egyptian, Car enthusiasts, etc. Let them clean up some niche creature types to expand tribal synergies.

Good video, reason 1 and 2 are why I stopped playing. I love the game, but the things that make me want to continue to support the game are the things like beautiful art, and engaging stories. I should say it's been a longtime coming. Wizards of the Coast have been making bad decision after bad decision, but somehow just end up printing money. I can't keep putting my money into it, hoping it gets better, when day by day it just keeps getting worse. That's just me though, no hate to anyone who loves the new direction, but it's not for me anymore.
