The belt for this turntable needs to be 305mm (fold) by 3mm. The rotation is perfect at 33.3 and 45.2 (acceptable)
Some people are just not mechanically inclined, they are great with electronics, but mechanical things are a completely different mindset. Older mechanics are the guys that excel fixing these turntables.
All true statements...thanks for watching!
The TT you are servicing must be the PL-516, as the PL-518 is direct drive. Thanks for taking the time to post the video. Very helpful for how to access the pitch pot for cleaning. The PL-518 is very similar, except that there is one screw to remove, and the entire auto return assembly remains connected to the tone arm assembly.
Doh! Need to change the title...thanks!
I have a 5000a. I havent opened it up yet. How can I tell if it has the good or bad board in it? I know that the bad board is #1040, does it have numbers that I can easily see? If not where are they? Thanks!
The boards are stamped. There are lots of threads on AudioKarma that address the boards with good pix - you can probably find some images of the location there.
This video is very helpful; thank you for doing it. Would it be possible for you to share the list of bulb type/ size/ voltage & current rating for the dial pointer, FM stereo indicator, Phono1, Phono2 & Aux bulbs, please? Thank you
6.3v 250ma for the indicators, 5v 60ma for the pointer (I believe). I usually just look at audiokarma posts or kits being sold on eBay for values...or I just buy the kits :)
I picked one up that works for $20. It turned on and weighed a ton so I took a chance on it. Thanks for the info on it
$20??? Smoking deal!
My Senior year in High School I could not afford to buy a SX 737, however I could afford to get the SA 7100 and later the TX 7100. I still have both and keep them for backup when my other receivers need repairs.
That's pretty cool. I would have thought the separates would have been more...
@ The SA 7100 was $150 and the TX 7100 $125 and the SX 737 was $299.
Extremely frustrating table to work on - And I don’t understand the love affair with it because the mechanic are metal sliding on metal that will always cause issues. There is no clearance on the sliding on / off mechanism which always Boggs down - Dual may be held in high esteem, but the 1019 is a collection of bogged down levers that will always cause trouble.
I am right there with you…I will say that if I HAD to run a Dual, it would be the 1019…
Great video. I just finished fixing my CP 1057F by reconnecting those jumper wires. In my case, the arm swings too much into the record. I discovered A and B wore already cut. Reconnected them and now it stop at perfect position.
Nice! Glad the video helped!
I bought SX 980, about 5 yrs ago when price was ok, chose this because looks like Baby Brother to 1980.
Prices are definitely crazy on these now.
I really enjoy your video's!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks! I have a Beogeam 6500 with a tonearm issue. Hopefully, it will be an easy fix.
Hope it helps! IIRC, this video isn't super detailed on how I stumbled upon the fix.
@millervintagehifi3034 I found the service manual for the BEOGRAM 6500. It has the exact diagram that I need! To show me how to reattach the thin cord to the tonearm carrier assembly. I'll try again in about 2 hours.
1010 are 1600
Crazy...
they are 900 now
Again, crazy...
Wow, that sucks! I ordered a Dual 1019 off ebay for $70~ and it arrived the same way except the plinth shattered into 5 pieces. I couldn't return it because of the deal I got and just glued everything back, now it looks fine. Without ebay, where do you source your turntables?
eBay is marginally better than ShopGoodwill...which is sad...
I used to owna PL-A25. It was a good turntable
I've found them easy to sort out and they are fairly reliable.
Tell me about it; I've had two Pioneer tape decks destroyed when shipped by eBayers who were clueless about shipping heavy items. Without the factory original box, there's little chance of success.
Welcome to my world! I've started providing shipping instructions and recording the unboxing of it, that has given me some success on getting proper refunds.
My experience as well...it's a fingers crossed situation with every order.
I've done the same, with photos to instruct sellers how to ship with a warning, but they seldom follow the directions :)
How do you get the cover off?
Should be two screws on each side of the cabinet.
I got mine for 40$ combined with a turntable! The amp was perfect however the turntable was a goner 😅😂
$40 for this Sony is a good deal :)
Just bought one of these and am hoping to restore it. This video was very informative. I hope to learn more.
Hope it helps!
Got my PL-10 this year for $150, local. Absolutely mint. Gotta appreciate people taking good care of stuff like this 😀
Totally agree. Most of the gear that walks in the door at the shop has not been well cared for…it’s sad to see.
Mine (orig owner) doesn't power. Is there a fuse?
I do not believe there is a fuse, but you will need to check. Is the motor running and the platter just stuck? When is the last time it was used?
@@millervintagehifi3034 Platter is pretty gummy but spins, no motor sound or effort, though. Stored almost 20 years.
@@rpm2dayg648 Hard to tell what the issue might be...could be a bad switch somewhere, bad motor, bad ??
@@millervintagehifi3034 I guess it's a case of ran great when I parked! Lol. I'll get into it after the holidays and comment if I find the issue. Thanks, and happy holidays.
I've had a 1974 PL-10 for 45 years now. It's still in very good condition, all accessories, and the box. In 1979 my oldest sister moved out of state and left me her stereo system - Pioneer SX-434, PL-10, and pair of speakers. I was 14, this was my first stereo. I absolutely loved it and still do. Only in the past year have I discovered that this is all entry level and low power. Never knew that, never cared, still don't care. I recently had the SX-434 restored to spec and serviced the PL-10 myself - clean/lubricate the spindle, new belt, new cartridge - that's all there is to it. It's still my only turntable (except for Voice of Music 1200-series record changers in consoles).
Great story! Unfortunately too much of the gear from this time period was abused, especially the lower-end products.
What did you use to lube the spindle?
I am using some stuff called ‘Reel Butter’ (for fishing reels). I’ve had it forever…it’s basically a synthetic motor oil.
I Just fully serviced this model. It will not record. Goes into record..and nothing on PB. The tab in sensor has no switch associated to it. So these can record tab out??
Unfortunately this is the only SD 3000 I've worked on, and it was some time back.
I have the full auto version ( Stanton 681 EEE cart ) still works fine. the (to me ugly ) fake wood vinyl started peeling so I got it all of & to me looks better without. Couple years ago just for heck I got a new thorens 103 full auto , ( ortofon blue ). at 70 + I'm not gonna say I hear any difference. prefer Concert DVD's anyway , to me best improvement in HiFi since early 1970's leap in power.
I LOVE Stanton carts. I have several 681 and 881s as well as a few 500s.
I found mine at a local sweap meet, paid $35.00 for it just cleaned it new belt works great.
They're pretty easy to get sorted out. Nice score!
Excellent! I have a PL-41 and you walked me through the belt change and cleanup of that cap. I’m back in business! Thank you, sir!
Glad the video was helpful.
The one thing a new turntable has that none of these 50-year-old tables have: a warranty. My brother had this turntable. It sucked. Can't come close to matching the sound my MoFi StudioDeck and UltraTracker combo. I'll take new any day.
If you go by inflation rates etc your Mofi is worth twice as much as the Pioneer. The PL10 was Pioneer's entry table and they sold tons of right up the PL12 II and many of them are still around.
Well we're not comparing apples to apples - the MoFi isn't an entry level deck. Go buy a u-turn orbit and we can talk...
At least with the MoFi you get a 2 year limited warranty :)
With some easy modification there is a lot too win. Make a new solid wood plinth add a rubber with cork matt and a nice cartridge (Audio technica vm95 green) and they are way better then a new one.
That's one of the joys of an old manual turntable...you can turn it into something special.
Are you accepting local service projects?
Go to my website and send me an email. Depends on what you have that needs to be serviced :)
@@millervintagehifi3034 Done. Thank you for your consideration.
I know that there are somewhat affordable new turntables offered, but since there are so many well-built, simple, vintage tt's still around, I can see why they are still popular. Those are all I own and enjoy.
Definitely more ‘bang for the buck’ with most vintage tables. Others are WAY overpriced :)
NICE. 🎵🎵
Thanks for watching!
I get a feeling that there are two sources for voice coil rub. One is that the voice coil is not circular and the other is that the surround dope has "fallen" down. Think the first thing to try is to move the driver 180 degree and wait some days to see if it's get better. The dope on the Altec can float around when it get hot. Question: What to use as dope for the surrounding? Is it black latex?
I think it is black latex, but I'm not an Altec Lansing historian :)
Fun to watch this. I purchased one new in 1971. Still have original box, receipt, and owners manual. I had it cleaned and relamped several years ago. I love this thing.
We have this running through some Klipsh Chorus I speakers at 402 Vinyl. It's the best sounding setup in the shop :)
My Father and I went stereo shopping in 74’ we bought an SX-737 and SX-434 together for $420 CAD. Brother still has 737 my ex has the 434 probably for a door stop.
The x3x series is great.
You would have been well served by reviewing the owners manual prior to starting the project. It won't "auto start" when you have it set to manual mode.
Where is the fun in that? :)
I lucked out on mine too. The dolby controls seem to need cleaning but the crackles clear up after a few minutes. I get tempted to move over to something simpler sometimes, but it passes.
I added a 9090 (non-DB) to the 'collection' as well :) I didn't get this one nearly as cheap as the DB...
@millervintagehifi3034 after some consideration I think I might sell the old battle axe to someone who can afford to fix it when it has issues I am satisfied with much simpler gear every day, might as well just live there
Hello, My shell is touching in the dust cover, how to solve this please?
Adjust the tonearm stand or arm height.
What kind of veneer is that do u have a link where to buy it at
I've purchased veneer from a few different sources. Either Amazon or eBay. I believe this was paper-backed veneer from Amazon.
@millervintagehifi3034 do u do repairs for people? I actually have this same model reciever has same problems blowing fuses and outputs being bad
Awesome video. Came here after digging for a great sounding 30wpc simple reciever with loudness/contour and a TINY footprint. Such great info. Any other gear you'd recommend that would be similar?
I cannot think of any other vintage receivers this small off of the top of my head.
Is it best to measure the value the old trim pots are set to and install the new ones at a similar value before turning it on?
I haven’t considered that. I usually install them and just follow the alignment procedures - most instructions have you turn the trim pots fully counterclockwise.
Wow.
Thanks for watching!
how often are the caps bad on the board ? having some issue with mine with the solenoid not always working ...
Estimates are that caps are designed to last 15-20 years (naturally, YMMV) so caps that are pushing 40/50/60 years old are more prone to drift out of spec or fail, causing issues. This turntable also uses optical sensors/lamps that will weaken over time (IIRC).
I still have an 8080 that I bought in Japan in 1974. I was 20 years old and knew nothing about audio equipment. I chose the Sansui based solely on how it looked which, while very similar to the Pioneer and Marantz units in the showroom, was the only one with power meters.
I love me some VU meters :)
What year is this model from?? I just bought this one for 10 dollars at a thrift store!
Early 70s?
Hi I have the McIntosh 1700 what type of replacement LEDs Do I need. ? Tx
My 1700 is buried right now, do an eBay search (they sell kits)
Hopefully you will get a 1250 on your bench sooner or later! Haha
Those seem to be pretty rare. I’ve worked on a 1280 and 1980 but no 1250.
@ That’s interesting, I always figured they had produced a ton of those units. Maybe not.
Nice I have a pair of Model LS4b's very nice sounding speakers
That pair of Model 5s are the only Jensen (branded) speakers I’ve come across.
I have an sx 828 and noticed the dial "glass" seems to be a type of plexiglass. Surprising, because both my sx 737, 750 are real glass.
Is the 828 glass OEM?
@millervintagehifi3034 didn't know what that meant, I looked it up. Is OEM real glass? It didn't really tell me. Does that unit you have appear to be a real glass? Mine seems inferior to the one in my 737 and 750 models
@@ronaldfriedline9297 OEM is 'original equipment manufacturer'...in other words, is it original to the unit or did someone replace it with plexiglass later on. Models before and after the 828 used real glass, so my assumption is that plexiglass was used to replace the original (probably damaged) glass. The 727 I have in the garage right now has real glass in it.
@millervintagehifi3034 I've got 2 828s and they're both the same thing. Looks plastic to me so I don't know
Original print on both upper right by the tuning knob
