Looks to me like your E-Bay comparables were for the NON dbx units which are less money. Also, the black versions have a higher demand and worth more than the silver models. These are among the best sounding and more desirable units on the market today, as well as the Otari 5050 and TEAC X2000. A recapped/rebuilt GX 747dbx unit would normally sell in the $2500.-$4000. depending on condition. They have the glass/xtal heads which will last nearly forever if taken care of. The sound is incredibly sweet, clean and warm.
Very well could be. I personally like these decks (I think they're sexy) and have not found any to be difficult to get up and running - BUT - I normally perform basic service/maintenance tasks to get them up and running. Recapping/recalibrating isn't my forte'.
@@millervintagehifi3034 I own one of these- the black version dbx. Purchased from the original owner still in the box with 3, 10.5" reels of tape (2 unopened) and original Akai take up reel. I also got both the wireless remote and dust cover, also still in original boxes and never used. I took it to an incredible tech, who evaluated and recapped/rebuilt the entire unit, new belts, removed old grease, cleaned it inside/out. It not only looks brand new, but operates flawlessly. He told me he had no issues/difficulty working on it. have had several other decks and hands-down this is the nicest sounding, sweetest deck I have ever owned.
Depends on what's important to you. The 707 is great, but the output adjustments are on the back if you need to adjust L/R...the Akai is nice in other ways but isn't as reliable. The Akai currently fits my setup (aesthetically) a bit beter.
I do...it's my primary 'listener' BUT I swap it out with a Pioneer RT 707. I have space limitations in my rack. My recording deck is in a different room and is a Sony TC 755.
YAAAAAY! CANT HARDLY WAIT FOR THE GX 77 video!
I hope to record something on it soon. Many items in the queue...

Biggest thing I want to know: Pioneer 707, or
Akai 77 -which to buy??

Do you have a GX 77 to review??

The dbx circuit could be the source of the bad reviews...
I couldn't find many specifics...I just wrapped up a service and review on a GX 646 as well. This deck's little brother (or sister) :)
