Keeping a Commonplace Book: Why & How
come one come all yall love this shit this is why you should keep a commonplace journal/ otherwise keep a personal collection of writings, notes, memos etc, and how it’s important for developing your creativity (even if you don’t think you’re creative), how it acts as a tool for self reflection and discovery, and also just generally allows you to have a better understanding of your own purpose, your past and how to achieve your future goals.
*****************************************************************
and if you didnt watch the video the most important part is I AM STARTING A 2ND CHANNEL!!!!!!!!!!!
Subscribe here: www.youtube.com/@UCK34ZJjD3o3VFZCofIu9iFQ
planning on posting more vlogs, and general chitty chatty videos/ shooting the shit style videos that I won’t post here. Like my commonplace journal, I would also like an online space where I can keep more informal conversations and notes to myself/ bits that I would like to share, which don’t necessarily fit the theme of this main channel/ are not fully fleshed out creatures. so I plan for these to live on the second channel- subscribe if you want. but it’s gonna be shit like me talking about my favorite 1000+ page book about tennis and wheelchair assassins (those things are connected) which is all actually a hamlet analogy which i have been wanting to talk about forever but never did on this channel bc i was paranoid it would tank my algorithm ranking. or like outfit videos because i bought a bunch of secondhand stuff from japan. or you send me questions and I answer them the possibilities are endless!!!!!!!!! so go check that out

i use sketch books to take notes from the books i read. I have stored them at my warehouse at work. The other day, we sold the company, but they said, Frank we have your note book. Yes, I saw 2008. The books I read and my mind set was differnt. Before I lost my parents and freinds. Life was much simpler and the more I found more books on lost and yes, These note books are holding our set in time. Great talk.

Thank you so much for this great idea! I've recently been trying to improve my experience while at community college and trying to "mix my life up" from the norm ( study, eat, work, sleep) but when I had 5 or 10 minutes I would find myself scrolling on my phone. Now I can have fun in my journal and best of all I can actually look back into it and see where my thought process was and remind myself of good ideas. Just generally a notebook that makes me feel better about myself and I feel like my time has been put to a far better use.

You're passion is palpable and made me want to have a common place book. Unfortunately, I'm also lazy! But I've also been wanting to remove myself more from social media and learn more things that interest me and document this knowledge. I need to stop relying on motivation and just do the things!

Thank you for this! For so many years, I've. bought pretty notebooks to write notes, journal, write down general things like to-do lists... but then I'd be discouraged from using it due to perfectionism. A commonplace book really takes weight off your shoulders to perform.

This made me think of my Chinese teacher in high school. He told us to write down whatever in life, even a word. The notebook called见闻感, means observe, hear, touching. And the notebook was the interesting thing in my tedious high school life. But when I in the last year of high school, he dead when he was cycling around the country. His life seemed like a film.

Never knew about the existince of commonplace books until two years ago, but I was keeping A5 notebooks with me since 2013 and used them for all kinds of things like To-Do-Lists, ideas and sort of diary entries. They are probably too unorganized to be called commonplace books cause they are way too chaotic and there is 0 system in them, but I'm so glad I kept these things for so long.

That's what I'm doing with mine, I like to collect a lot of information (some useful, some not so much) because I like the idea of being knowledgeable lol I find difficult mixing information that is mine with info that is not (?) like, I don't like the idea of putting my own thoughts (don't know why) but I'm working on letting some parts of me in that commonplace so it could be less of an encyclopaedia. For example I could write why I felt the need to copy that information or the thought process behind, for example I was researching which animal grows the most in his life (relative to its size) and I found about atavism lol

She said before a journal is more focused on going in depth emotionally and more long winded lengths of text about situations in your life and deeper thoughts and a commonplace book is more chill and short little bits of information with the goal of learning who you are and what you like x

I agree, for example if you buy a really flash Car, then you show it off to everyone and they are giving you ooohs and arrrrs they make you feel good for a certain amount of time. When all those oooohs and Arrrrs have stopped and the ego feels its not so special any more, you are back to the beginning, until you buy something else new. Thats why the most important time is in the here and now.
