Sub 8-hours for the UKs toughest sportive? Smashing my target time on the Dragon Gran Fondo
My longest ride yet and an amazing day on the bike. Enjoyed this sportive so much. For once my legs felt great, and although I started off a little too enthusiastically, I felt overall that I managed to pace the ride fairly well, got my nutrition strategy bang-on and ended strong on the last two tough climbs.
The weather wasn't that sunny, but in hindsight the cloudy skies kept things cool. Some of the climbs were no joke - particularly the Rhigos and Bwlch, that the organisers back-loaded towards the end of the route.
Huge shout-out to Neil who kept me company for the first 90-odd miles until he sped away. Also massive thanks to the organisers who put on such a fun event. I can definitely recommend this sportive to anyone who's looking for a good cycling challenge and a great atmosphere.
Maybe at some point I'll have a go at the longer, more difficult 'Devil' route, which is the one-up from the Gran Fondo I completed, and has another 50 or so miles, and 3000+ extra feet of climbing!

Hellfire Pass & 50mph downhill | Brutal North Wales training ride | Prep for the Dragon Gran Fondo
มุมมอง 2614 หลายเดือนก่อน
This was my last big training session ahead of the Dragon ride Gran Fondo at the end of June. Lots of tough climbing in North Wales to test my legs before the Dragon, including the notorious Bwch-Y-Groes (Hellfire Pass). My weight is down from when I climbed the Col de la Madone in Nice around 5 weeks ago, so I was hoping things might feel a little easier. I was very wrong. The Bwlch is a BRUTA...

A hugely enjoyable, fun, and tough day on the bike in the South of France. Col de la Madone turned out to be a real challenge. I picked the wrong bike to hire, with a 28-tooth cassette. I should've known better, as being a relatively big-unit, I need a bigger cog to spin-out when the gradient gets close to double digits My target was to get into the top -100 for my weight category on Strava, wh...

Another sunny day in Hampshire and a return to the Candover valley TT course for me, after a nearly three and a half year absence. Great conditions on Saturday morning and some luck, saw me obliterate my previous horrendous PR of 28:10, taking over 2 and a half minutes off that time with a new, now just 'mediocre' PR, of 25:38. Stoked to have done so much better than I expected and pleased that...

    Appreciate this was a couple of years ago but how do you find the Atom with TR? I’ve read about some erg mode issues like the two don’t play nicely together. I ask as I’m considering the new V2 Atom, and I worship at the altar of TR 😂

    • @hampshirecyclist
      @hampshirecyclist 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Really good question. Long answer below - but TLDR answer is - it's awesome! Overall I'd say it's been great albeit I can only speak to the specific setup I run. I use TR on my Apple MacBook Air (which is around 4.5 years old) and it connects well. Dropouts happen rarely and are short-lived (I guess probably once every 4 to 6 months from my experience). ERG mode works well for 95% of workouts. Where it struggles a little, is when doing very short intervals. Anything around 30s is tough because there is a little delay in the ERG power rising, which means if you're doing a high power (VO2 or above) interval that is short, you can't get the full effect for the entire interval time. Also - worth noting that sometimes when starting a workout, as the power ramps at the very beginning of the warmup, you can see on the odd occasion you get a 'spike' in power until the connection settles. So if you rely on your data a lot, you may want to scrap the workout and start again to avoid recording a 3000+w power spike that would impact your TSS etc - but I guess I've had a similar thing with power meters I've run on my bikes. Other than this, I've loved the Wattbike - it's been reliable, consistent and easy to use and it's well made and robust. The ERG mode for Threshold / Sweetspot / Tempo workouts is brilliant, as it forces you to push through all those temptations to ease off and really helps support building out your TTE. I clean it regularly and have had it serviced once in the 6 years or so I've owned it, which was surprisingly good value. Another thing (which may simply be attributable to my own physiology) is that I consistently see lower power numbers on my ATOM than outdoors. This has been consistent across multiple bikes with different power-meter settings (crank arm single / double, also single and double sided pedals and also hub). Its roughly about a 5% difference and is VERY consistent suggesting it's probably either the ATOM reads a little low or I just can't put out the same power over any given time indoors (much more likely). If it was just experienced on the PM on my own bike, then I'd write it off as the external setup over-reading, but the effect is consistent across multiple bikes. Also bear in mind I'm using V1 of the ATOM - I don't have any experience of the V2. Come to think of it, I probably ought to do a review of the ATOM ... 🤔

    Nice work - both on the bike and your video. I'm 188 cm 95 kg and hope to climb Puig Major this year (last year was my first time up Sa Calobra). Cheers

    Great job on the effort, quite high avg HR and you didn’t seem to much out of breath at the end. So quite confident you could come down to 55, if you want.
