Saying goodbye to my tuned Mk7.5 VW Golf R Estate | replacement bike wagon on the way

  • Saying a fond farewell to my bike-wagon after just over 3 years of ownership.
The VW Golf Mk 7.5 estate (variant) has been a fantastic bike transporter and everyday car. Reliable, sure-footed and pretty damn quick. As a load lugger it served me well on numerous holidays, taking 4 adults to Wales, the Lake District, Devon and Cornwall, carrying a lot of luggage and at least one bike with ease.
Upsides were the (moderately tuned) performance, 4 wheel drive all weather ability and traction, ample load space, comfortable motorway cruising ability, the snappy DSG gearbox along with decent build quality and a super-high specification.
Downsides ... there weren't many. The pretty low fuel consumption, not particularly nimble chassis and (for me) anodyne steering that didn't inspire B-road confidence (not helped by considerable weight). Also, the high quality aftermarket exhaust that came with the car (Remus) fitted by the previous owner, was probably a bit OTT, but too expensive to swap out.
I still need a car that can take my bike on trips, but now its time to really change things up... (no spoilers)
