This channel was originally created by Chris Hirst to feature original music by the group Quatrapuntal. Since then it has also come to include Chris's other activities as a lutenist, including solos, explanation videos and collaborations with other musicians. These other videos contain some of the styles that influenced the original Quatrapuntal music so there is a thread which connects the diverse content. The influences include baroque/classical, folk, Portuguese and Neapolitan traditional music, film music, musicals, some popular songs and even heavy metal! Each original Quatrapuntal song has its own unique character and blend of styles.

Rings of Power Season 2 theme music (Lord of the Rings) played on the mandora lute by Chris Hirst
#ringsofpower #ringsofpowerseason2 #lordoftherings #filmmusic #newrelease #season2 #lute
This is the title music from The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series. As season 2 of the Rings of Power is being released, this is my homage to the series and title music, played here on a mandora which I think works very well. I know the first series was a bit controversial and some hated it, I thought it was pretty decent and great to get back into the world of the Lord of the Rings again after the film trilogy some time ago.
The mandora is a type of lute popular especially in Germany and Austria from around 1700 until well into the century. This particular mandora is a Viennese model based on descriptions from c.1812, when the instrument had 8 single strings and was tuned in E. See this video for more information and to hear historical music played on the mandora:

It's 1565 again. Oh, how times have changed. Paul McCartney thought he wrote the song "Yesterday" in 1965, but he actually didn't. His great grandfather 17 generations ago wrote "Yesterday" in 1565 and played it on his lute. 🤣
Have you seen the film "Yesterday"? That kind of situation, more like 1765 though for this type of lute.
Javier Medina sounds exactly like him and they also look so much alike. Im very fucking surprised of how much like an angels they sound.
Wonderful, a joy to listen to when you need something to lift your spirits!
Talk about being married to the game 😂
Do you happen to have tablature for this? I'm currently configured for theorbo in german tuning at the moment.

The church started it all by stopping women singing in church

Tk you, great video! Some question, please, can the baroque lute be tuned like the classical guitar and played? As I also know that the baroque lute has double strings, can it be combined with single strings like the guitar? What's the name of the penultimate lute you showed and could it replace the guitar? How much could a lute like that cost? Thank you
The lute is really a different instrument to the guitar, especially the baroque lute, so it's not that useful to compare them. The baroque lute always has double strings, with octaves in the basses which are important. If you want an instrument like a guitar then you would be better with a 13 string guitar, although obviously the sound is quite different. The tuning, stringing and playing technique of the baroque lute is nothing like the classical guitar at all.
@Quatrapuntal ok, tk you so much
Very expressive technique, which is something that really pays off in this instrument, all the vibrato is really expressive, very nice! Just one thing regarding the size of the sound box, your guitar is a Lisbon style guitar, which is typically tuned to BAEBAD as you explained, but there is another version of the Portuguese guitar, which is the Coimbra style, and it has a deeper body, a tear-shaped headstock, and is typically tuned to a whole step down, so AGDAGC.
There were a few things on this video that I forgot to mention in hindsight, including aspects of the development from other types of cittern and the Coimbra version. Coimbra fado is very different and the Lisbon style resonates much more with me to be honest. It seems many professional players prefer a Coimbra guitar but with Lisbon tuning, not sure why maybe the scale length is slightly longer giving a different tone. This video is much better as a performance and more expressive: th-cam.com/video/sSRy6orRI98/w-d-xo.html
Almost identical (one bass note different) arrangement to one I found in a German guitar method decades ago and that I use for teaching grade two level repertoire. I can't recall the author of the method.
Pure coincidence then as I didn't listen to any other versions to create this other than the original song. The low D string does come in very useful in this, and in most things I really miss it on guitars.
This things tight asf
Is that a good or bad thing?
I am absolutely delighted. I came here by way of a crossword clue answer & had never heard of a theorbo, apologies. I had to watch this twice & have subscribed.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the subscription, there are a few other videos on the channel with the theorbo as well
Hi, I was very happy with the video made on the evolution of the lute. last week, I bought a German lute or guitar lute from the 1900s (Kirsten brand), I'm trying to adjust my hand because the neck is much narrower than the guitar. I have read that this kind of lute are poor, and that they do not have an original lute sound. Can you give me some information about these lutes....I would like to do an early music concert with this lute. is it suitable?! thank you so much
These German lutes are really a separate instrument, not like earlier lutes and not like a guitar either. There is a lot of snobbery from lutenists about them, but some are very well made and nice instruments if looked after. The sound can't be compared to a lute from the old tradition up to around 1830 though, they were much more thinly constructed and resonant which is a key part of the lute sound. If you see my video about the history of the lute there is a comparison with a lightly made mandora and a heavily constructed German 20th century lute. The German lutes started to emerge in larger numbers in the 1880s, it is my theory that they evolved directly from the earlier mandora but it is difficult to prove that. They were very popular from about 1910 to 1930, they unfortunately became associated with the rise in Nationalism and ultimately Nazis, so after the war very few were produced. They are certainly not the "correct" instrument for renaissance or baroque music and the sound is quite different, but if you want to play that music on it then why not?
@Quatrapuntal tk you very much, it's very kind of you!
It still doesnt make sense to me cos male pop singers sing so high these days
Sounds like falsetto to me - and pretty awful to boot. Personal opinion.
Muito obrigado!
De nada!
Amazing, thank you!
And then italians found out about counter tenors and sopranists
They always knew, but preferred the castrati despite the moral issues
Am I dreaming or is this the instrument that Koji Kondo used to compose the Lon Lon Ranch theme? You should play it for us!!
Somebody else mentioned this music, I listened to it and I think that it's a female voice singing without words in the original. My nail violin skills are pretty limited, lots of jumps are difficult as are many chromatic notes but maybe it would work.
This looks so difficult! As a beginner lutenist I am left breathless…
I would say this and the fugue before it are the most difficult pieces for baroque lute, which is why they are rarely played on the correct instrument (as opposed to archlute etc.). I presume that as a beginner you have a renaissance lute? The technique is pretty different, especially the right hand.
@ I see… I’ve been playing guitar for 6 years now so I had the basics of the lute without even having touched one before. And then I’m an undisputed fan of baroque music so I couldn’t imagine playing the renaissance lute! I only swear by Mouton, De Visée and Weiss

Very beautiful sounding and well played here and in the J.S.Bach BWV998 clip as well, do you have any recording or CD made or some compilation etc to recommend with this instrument in mind? Greetings from Sweden***

You rocking metal frets ?
This is a 19th century mandora, so by that point they started to have fixed frets. I actually regret that now as I can't tweak the intonation like with tied frets, but too late now.
Beautiful playing my friend !!
Double strings and no re-entrant? isn't that a Chitarrone? o.O
No, chitarrone is just an early 17th century name for the Italian theorbo, exactly the same. This is a much rarer and later German theorbo - all the info is 8n the video description
@@Quatrapuntal well my mistake I was taught that the theorbo has single strings, tuned in A and has re-entrant 1st and second strings.
@@adampasztor6187 that is only because most modern players use those for convenience. Many historical Italian theorbos were double strung, people use single strings today because they are easier to play and a bit louder. Different tunings existed as well, there was a lot more variety than you see today. But chitarrone is just an alternative name, not a different instrument.
@@Quatrapuntal thank you for educating and clarifying. :)
Is the singer missing some parts or is he just able to his the high notes? I'm not detecting the resonance that I hear on recordings by Alesandro Moreschi
I don't really know what you mean, but Moreschi is problematic as a reference. The poor quality of the recording equipment changes the tone considerably, and he had a technique very particular to his time, quite different to the great 18th castrati. It is a fascinating glimpse, but probably a long way from the sound of Farinelli.
Lon Lon ranch from Zelda ocarina of time would be perfect played with this set up
I don't know that one, my nail violin skills are pretty minimal so it would have to be very simple!
@@Quatrapuntal it’s so simple you’ll laugh! The composer Koji Kondo had to keep it as simple as possible due to storage restrictions in old video game consoles, give it a listen!
I went through normal puberty, but my voice didn't change until I was about 22. It really sucked. Beautiful aria though - thanks for posting!
Is it a lot harder to play with gloves?
Yes it is, although because I am playing 7 different parts they were recorded first before the video, otherwise the sound would have been muffled
Beautiful. It's such a difficult instrument to play because it's so delicate and this fugue, in my opinion, is easier to play on the classical guitar. Great performance!
I've never played it on the guitar but I can confirm it is a beast on the baroque lute, as is the Allegro (also on this channel). It is very rarely played live in concerts on the lute by anyone because it is so difficult. I very rarely do solo concerts and not sure I would dare!
Wonderful and soulful ❤️👏
This seems a wonderful but very difficult instrument to play. I think you play very good and it deserves a bit of reverb, like all other fado guitar players like to do ..
My main instrument is the lute so although the P. guitar has a difficult and very unique technique, compared to the baroque lute it's not so bad! The video was done a while ago so the sound is not great, this one is better th-cam.com/video/sSRy6orRI98/w-d-xo.html
Fantastic video! I believe Weiss said something along the lines of he had been playing for 20 years - 10 of them were spent tuning.😂
With all gut strings the tuning is a lot more problematic, I use nylgut (synthetic gut) which is quite stable once stretched. See here to hear it properly th-cam.com/video/qVk8VS-Ad2c/w-d-xo.html
Is that an 8 string lute guitar? It sounds great and looks pretty cool
No, it's an early 19th century style mandora, a type of lute that's nothing to do with guitars even though there are coincidental similarities. There is more info about it here: th-cam.com/video/HzexBS6-IUM/w-d-xo.html
@@Quatrapuntal oh yeah I've seen a few in the "Laute in Europa" book and in some luthier websites like Marco Salerno's website, I hadn't seen 8 string mandoras but I did see up to 6 strings. I'll try to research more on the mandora, I'm very curious about it. You always seem to have the most interesting instruments even for the already rare topic that is early music. I'm fascinated by all of it.
@@The_IRL_Bard years ago there weren't that many lutenists, and no Internet of course. These days anyone can put anything online and there are a lot more players, so it's a lot more saturated. I have tried to find my own niches of areas that are little covered by others, also the more rare and unusual things have always interested me more. I have been researching and playing post-baroque music for a long time, the video I linked is the last surviving piece from 1818.
Very nice. Thank you for posting this.
Thanks, you can see the full video this is taken from here: th-cam.com/video/F3hCWTPozl0/w-d-xo.html
Sehr interessante Stimme.
If the person has a "normal" male broken speaking voice they are a countertenor and singing in falsetto. Arno Raunig speaks with a broken voice so he is a high countertenor/sopranist. The singer on this recording had an unbroken adult voice so spoke like a child, which is the closest modern equivalent to a castrato. Look up Samuel Marino, he also has an unbroken voice it is extremely rare.
In welche Kathegorie würden Sie ihn einordnen?
Splendid stuff! A few questions....1/Who built your Theorbo? 2/The Long Basses are clearly not gut. What are they made of, and where can they be bought? 3/ what is the string-length, in cm's of the 2 necks? many thanks!
It was built by Klaus Jacobsen who lives in London, the basses are plaited nylon which was an experiment Klaus did but they are great, 25 years later they sound the same and rarely go out of tune. The stopped length is 80cm, can't remember exactly for the basses but something like 150cm. See also the info on this video: th-cam.com/video/qVk8VS-Ad2c/w-d-xo.html
@@Quatrapuntal That's quite a coincidence....When I lived in London, I used to share a workshop space with Klaus, in Stoke Newington. A very tall Danish chap. I play Lute professionally, hence the technical questions. Are you self-taught? You have a very fluent, neat, and confident technique, particularly in the right hand. Who made the metal-fretted Mandora? It sounds very warm and attractive. With all good wishes, Edward Fitzgibbon.
Klaus is still in Stoke Newington I believe, he makes very fine instruments although he has only done one other German theorbo I believe. I was at Birmingham Conservatoire firstly, then the Guildhall, mainly taught by Bill Carter but also has a few lessons with Nigel North when he lived in London. I play professionally as well, but have been out of the London scene for years now and do less concerts these days.
